punarapi mahārāja yanmayā anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhiprāptaye dānāni dattāni, puṇyāni kṛtāni, vīryapāramitā ca pariripūtā, anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhirnārādhitā, tacchrūyatām||



bhūtapūrvaṃ mahārāja pāñcālaviṣaye rājānau babhūvatuḥ, uttarapāñcālo dakṣiṇapāñcālaśca| tatrottarapāñcālo mahādhano nāmnā hastināpure rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca śāntakalikalahaḍimbaḍamarataskaradurbhikṣarogāpagataṃ śālīkṣugomuhiṣīsaṃpannam dhārmiko dharmarājo dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayati| tasmiṃśca nagare mahāhrada utpalakumudapuṇḍarīkasaṃpanno haṃsakāraṇḍavacakravākopaśobhito ramaṇīyaḥ| tatra ca hrade janmacitrako nāma nāgapotaḥ prativasati| sa kālena kālaṃ samyagvāridhārāmanuprayacchati| atīva śasyasaṃpattirbhavati| śasyavatī vasumatī| subhikṣānnapāno deśaḥ| dānamānasatkāravāṃśca lokaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇakṛpaṇavanīpakopabhojyaḥ| dakṣiṇapāñcalastu rājā adharmabhūyiṣṭhaścaṇḍo rabhasaḥ karkaśo'dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayati, nityaṃ daṇḍena ghātanadhāraṇabandhanahaḍīnigaḍoparodhena rāṣṭranivāsināṃ trāsayati| adharmabhūyiṣṭhatayā cāsya devo na kālena kālaṃ samyagvāridhārāmutsṛjati| tato'sau mahājanakāyaḥ saṃtrastaḥ svajīvitāpekṣayā rāṣṭraparityāgaṃ kṛtvā uttarapāñcālasyaiva rājño viṣayaṃ gatvā prativasati| yāvadapareṇa samayena dakṣiṇapāñcālo rājā mṛgayāvyapadeśena janapadān vyavalokanāya nirgataḥ| yāvat paśyati grāmanagarāṇi śūnyāni, udyānadevakulāni bhinnaprabhagnāni| sa janakāyaḥ kka gata iti kathayati| amātyāḥ kathayanti-deva, uttarapāñcālasya rājño viṣayaṃ gataḥ| kimartham ? deva, abhayaṃ prayaccha, kathayāmaḥ| dattaṃ bhavatu| tataste kathayanti-deva, uttarapāñcālo rājā dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayati| tasya janapadā ṛddhāśca sphītāśca kṣemāśca subhikṣāśca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyāśca praśāntakalikalahaḍimbaḍamarataskaradurbhikṣarogāpagatāḥ śālīkṣugomahiṣīsaṃpannāḥ| dānamānasatkāravāṃśca lokaḥ śramaṇabrāhmaṇavanīpakopabhojyaḥ| devastu caṇḍo rabhasaḥ karkaśo nityaṃ tāḍanaghātanadhāraṇabandhananigaḍoparodhe(na) rāṣṭraṃ trāsayati| yato'sau janakāyaḥ saṃtrastaḥ saṃvegamāpanna uttarapāñcalasya rājño viṣayaṃ gataḥ| dakṣiṇapāñcālo rājā kathayati- bhavantaḥ, ko'sāvupāyaḥ syādyenāsau janakāyaḥ punarāgatya eṣu grāmanagareṣu prativaset ? amātyā āhiḥ-yadi deva uttarapāñcālavaddharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayasi, maitracitto'nukampācittaśca rāṣṭraṃ pālayasi, nacirādasau janakāyaḥ punarāgatya eṣu grāmanagareṣu prativaset| dakṣiṇapāñcālo rājā kathayati- bhavantaḥ, yadyevam, ahamapyuttarapāñcālavaddharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayāmi, maitracitto hitacitto'mukampācittaśca rāṣṭraṃ pālayāmi| yūyaṃ tathā kuruta, yathā asau janakāyaḥ punarāgatya eṣu grāmanagareṣu prativasatīti| amātyā āhuḥ-deva, aparo'pi tatrānuśaṃso'sti| tasmin nagare mahāhrada utpalakumudapuṇḍarīkasaṃchanno haṃsakāraṇḍavacakravākopaśobhitaḥ| tatra janmacitrako nāma nāgapotakaḥ prativasati| sa kālena kālaṃ samyagvāridhārāmanuprayacchati| atīva śasyasaṃpattirbhavati| tena tasya śasyavatī vasumatī, subhikṣānnapānaśca deśaḥ| rājā āha- ko'sau upāyaḥ syādyenāsau nāgapota ihānīyeta ? amātyā āhuḥ-deva, vidyāmantradhāriṇaḥ, tānānayeti| te samanviṣyantām| tato rājñā suvarṇapiṭakaṃ dhvajāgre baddhvā svavijite ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kāritam-ya uttarapāñcālarājaviṣayājjanmacitrakaṃ nāma nāgapotakamānayati, tasyemaṃ suvarṇapiṭakaṃ dāsyāmi, mahatā ca satkāreṇa satkariṣyāmīti| yāvadanyatamo'hituṇḍiko'mātyānāṃ sakāśaṃ gatvā kathayati-mamedaṃ suvarṇapiṭakamanuiprayacchata| ahaṃ janmacitraṃ nāma nāgapotakamapahṛtyānayāmīti| amātyāḥ kathayanti-eṣa gṛhāṇa| sa kathayati-yo yuṣmākaṃ śraddhayitaḥ pratyayitaśca, tasya haste tiṣṭhatu| ānīte janmacitre nāgapotake grahīṣyāmīti| evaṃ kuruṣveti| tato'srau ahituṇḍikaḥ pratyayitasya puruṣasya haste suvarṇapiṭakaṃ sthāpayitvā hastināpuraṃ gataḥ| tenāsau hradaḥ samantato vyavalokitaḥ| nimittīkṛtaḥ-asau janmacitro nāgapotaka etasmin pradeśe tiṣṭhatīti| tato balyupahāranimittaṃ punaḥ pratyāgataḥ| amātyānāṃ kathayati- balyupahāramenaṃ prayacchata| saptame divase taṃ nāgapotakamapahṛtya ānayāmīti| sa cāhituṇḍikastena saṃlakṣitaḥ- mamāsāvapaharaṇāyāgataḥ| saptame divase māmapahariṣyati| mātāpitṛviyogajaṃ me duḥkhaṃ bhaviṣyatīti| kiṃ karomi, kiṃ śaraṇaṃ prapadyeyamiti| tasya hradasya nātidūre dvau lubdhakau prativasataḥ, sārako halakaḥ| tau hradamāśritya jīvikāṃ kalpayataḥ| ye sthalagatāḥ prāṇino mṛgaśarabhasūkarādayastaṃ hradamupasarpanti, tān praghātayataḥ, ye'pi jalagatā matsyakacchāpamaṇḍūkādayaḥ| tatra sārakaḥ kālagataḥ, halako jīvati| janmacitro nāgapotaḥ saṃlakṣayati-ko'nyo'sti mama śaraṇamṛte halakāt lubdhakāt ? tato manuṣyaveṣamāsthāya halakasya lubdhakasya sakāśaṃ gataḥ| gatvā kathayati-bhoḥ puruṣa, kiṃ tvaṃ jānīṣe kasyānubhāvāddhanasya rājño janapadā ṛddhāśca sphītāśca subhikṣākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyāśca praśāntakalikalahaḍimbaḍamarataskaradurbhikṣarogāpagatāḥ śālīkṣugomahiṣīsaṃpannā iti ? sa kathayati-jāne sa rājā dhārmiko dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayati, maitracitto hitacitto'nukampācittaśca rāṣṭraṃ pālayatīti| sa kathayati-kimetadeva, athāstyanyadapi ? lubdhakaḥ kathayati-astyanyo'pyanuśaṃsaḥ| asmin pradeśe janmacitrako nāma nāgapotakaḥ prativasati| sa kālena kālaṃ samyagvāridhārāmanupracchati| atīva śasyasaṃpattirbhavati| śasyavatī vasumatī, subhikṣānnapānaśca deśa iti| janmacitraḥ kathayati-taṃ nāgapotakamito viṣayādapaharet, tasya nāgapotakasya kiṃ syāt ? na śobhanaṃ syāt, mātāpitṛviyogajaṃ duḥkhaṃ syādrājño rāṣṭrasya ca| yo'paharati, tasya kiṃ tvaṃ kuryāḥ ? sa āha-jīvitādvyaparopayeyam| jānīṣe tvaṃ kataro'sau nāgapotaka iti ? na jāne| ahamevāsau nāgaḥ| dakṣiṇapāñcālavaiṣayikenāhituṇḍikenāpahṛtya nīyet| sa balyupahāravidhānārthaṃ gataḥ| saptame divase āgamiṣyati| āgatya asya hradasya catasṛṣu dikṣu khadiraśalākānnikhanya nānāraṅgaiḥ sūtrairveṣṭayitvā mantrānāvartayiṣyati| tatra tvayā pracchanne saṃnikṛṣṭe sthātavyam| yadā tenāyamevaṃrūpaḥ prayogaḥ kṛto bhavati, tadā hradamadhyāt kkathamānaṃ pānīyamutthāsyati ahaṃ cotthāsyāmi| tadā tvayāsau ahituṇḍikaḥ śareṇa marmaṇi tāḍayitavyaḥ, āśu copasaṃkramya vaktavyaḥ-mantrānupasaṃhara | mā te utkṛttamūlaṃ śiraḥ kṛtvā pṛthivyāṃ nipātayiṣyamīti| yadyasau mantrānanupasaṃhṛtya prāṇairviyokṣyate, mṛtaṃ te'haṃ yāvajjīvaṃ mantrapāśabaddhaḥ syāmiti| lubdhakaḥ prāha-yadi tavaikasyaiva guṇaḥ syāt, tathāpyahamevaṃ kuryām, prāgeva sarājakasya rāṣṭrasya| gaccha, ahaṃ te trāteti| tatastena nāgapotakena tasyaikapārśve guptasthānamupadarśitam| yāvadasau lubdhakaḥ saptame divase pratigupto pradeśe ātmānaṃ gopayitvā avasthitaḥ| sa cāhituṇḍika āgatya balyupahāraṃ kartumārabdhaḥ| tena catasṛṣu dikṣu catvāraḥ khadirakīlakā nikhātāḥ| nānāraṅgaiḥ sūtrairveṣṭayitvā mantrā āvartitāḥ| atastasmāt pānīyaṃ kkathitumārabdham| lubdhakena ca śareṇa marmaṇi tāḍitaḥ| niṣkośaṃ cāsiṃ kṛtvā abhihitaḥ- tvamasmadviṣayanivāsinaṃ nāgapotamapaharasi| mā te utkṛttamūlaṃ śiraḥ kṛtvā pṛthivyāṃ nipātayāmīti| tato'hituṇḍikena duḥkhavedanābhibhūtena maraṇabhayabhītena mantrā vyāvartitāḥ| tatsamanantaraṃ ca lubdhakena jīvitād vyaparopitaḥ| tato nāgo mantrapāśavinirmukto hradādabhyudgamya lubdhakaṃ pariṣvaktavān, evaṃ cāha-tvaṃ me mātā, tvaṃ me pitā, yanmayā tvāmāgamya mātāpitṛviyogajaṃ duḥkhaṃ notpannam| āgaccha, bhavanaṃ gacchāmaḥ| tenāsau bhavanaṃ nītaḥ, nānāvidhena cānnapānena saṃtarpitaḥ, ratnāni copadarśitāni, mātāpitrośca niveditaḥ| amba tāta-eṣa me suhṛccharaṇam bāndhavaḥ| asyānubhāvādyuṣmābhiḥ saha viyogo na jāta iti| tābhyāmasau vareṇa pravārito vividhāni ca ratnāni dattāni| sa tānyādāya tasmād hradād vyutthitaḥ| tasya ca hradasya nātidūre puṣpaphalasalilasaṃpanne nānāśakunikūjite ṛṣeragramāśramapadam| tatra ca nāgapotakena sārdhaṃ vṛttakaṃ tatsarvaṃ vistareṇa samākhyātam| tata ṛṣiḥ kathayati- kiṃ ratnaiḥ kiṃ vā te suvarṇena ? tasya bhavane'mogho nāma pāśastiṣṭhati, taṃ yācasva| tato lubdhako'moghapāśe saṃjātatṛṣṇaḥ ṛṣivacanamupaśrutya punarapi nāgabhavanaṃ gataḥ| yāvatpaśyati bhavanadvāre tamamoghapāśam| tasyaitadabhavat-eṣa sa pāśo yo mayā prārthanīyaḥ| iti viditvā nāgabhavanaṃ praviṣṭaḥ| tato janmacitreṇa nāgapotakena anyaiśca nāgaiḥ sasaṃbhramaiḥ pratisaṃmodito ratnaiśca pravāritaḥ| sa kathayati-alaṃ mama ratnaiḥ| kiṃ tu etamamoghapāśaṃ prayacchatheti| sa nāga āha-tavānena kiṃ prayojanam ? yadā garurutmatopadrutā bhavāmaḥ, tadā anenātmānaṃ rakṣāmaḥ| lubdhaka āha- yuṣmākameṣa kadācit karhicit gurutmatopadrutānāmupayogaṃ gacchati| mama tu anena satatameva prayojanam|yadyasti kṛtamupakṛtaṃ ca, anuprayaccheti| janmacitrasya nāgapotakasyai tadabhavat-mamānena bahūpakṛtam| mātāpitarau avalokya dadāmīti| tena mātāpitarau avalokya sa pāśo dattaḥ| tato'sau lubdhakaḥ pṛthivīlabdhaprakhyena sukhasaumanasyenāpyāyitamanā amoghapāśamādāya nāgabhavanādabhyudgamya svagṛhaṃ gataḥ||



yāvadapareṇa samayena dhano rājā devyā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati| tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayato na putro na duhitā| sa kare kapolaṃ dattvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ-anekadhanasamuditaṃ me gṛham| na me putro na duhitā| mamātyayātsvakulavaṃśacchede rāṣṭrapahāraḥ sarvasantasvāpateyamaputramiti kṛtvā anyarājavidheyo bhaviṣyatīti| sa śramaṇabrāhmaṇasuhṛtsaṃbandhibāndhavairucyate-deva, kimasi cintāparaḥ ? sa etatprakaraṇaṃ vistareṇārocayati| te kathayanti- devatārādhanaṃ kuru, putraste bhaviṣyatīti| so'putraḥ putrābhinandī śivavaruṇakuveravāsavādīnanyāṃśca devatāviśeṣānāyācate, tadyathā-ārāmadevatā vanadevatā catvaradevatā śṛṅgāṭakadevatā balipratigrāhikāḥ| sahajāḥ sahadharmikā nityānubaddhā api devatā āyācate| asti caiṣa loke pravāedo yadāyācanahetoḥ putrā jāyante duhitaraśceti| taccanaivam| yadyevamabhaviṣyat, ekaikasya putrasahasramabhaviṣyat, tadyathā rājñaścakravartinaḥ| api tu trayāṇāṃ sthānānāṃ saṃmukhībhāvātputrā jāyante duhitaraśca| katameṣāṃ trayāṇām ? mātāpitarau raktau bhavataḥ saṃnipatitau| mātā cāsya kalyā bhavati ṛtumatī ca| gandharvaḥ pratyupasthito bhavati| eṣāṃ trayāṇāṃ sthānānāṃ saṃmukhībhāvātputrā jāyante ṛtumatī ca| gandharvaḥ pratyupasthito bhavati| eṣāṃ trayāṇāṃ sthānānāṃ saṃmukhībhāvātputrā jāyante duhitaraśca| sa caivamāyācanaparastiṣṭhati| anyatamaśca bhadrakalpiko bodhisattvastasyāgramahiṣyā avakrāntaḥ| pañcāveṇīyā dharmā ekatye paṇḍitajātīye mātṛgrāme| katame pañca ? raktaṃ puruṣaṃ jānāti viraktaṃ jānāti| kālaṃ jānāti kratuṃ jānāti| garbhamavakrāntaṃ jānāti| yasya sakāśādgarbhamavakrāmati tamapi jānāti| dārakaṃ jānāti, dārikāṃ jānāti| saceddārako bhavati, dakṣiṇaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati| saceddārikā bhavati, vāmaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati| sā āttamanāḥ svāmina ārocayati-diṣṭyā vardhasva āryaputra| āpannasattvāsmi saṃvṛttā| yathā ca me dakṣiṇaṃ kukṣiṃ niśritya tiṣṭhati, niyataṃ dārako bhaviṣyatīti| so'pyāttamanāttamanāḥ pūrvaṃ kāyamunnamayya dakṣḥiṇaṃ vāhumabhiprasārya udānamudānayati- apyevāhaṃ cirakālābhilaṣitaṃ putramukhaṃ paśyeyam| jāto me syānnāvajātaḥ| kṛtyāni me kurvīta| pratibharet| dāyādyaṃ me pratipadyeta| kulavaṃśo me ciarasthitikaḥ syāt| asmākaṃ cāpyatītakālagatānāmalpaṃ vā prabhūtaṃ vā dānāni datvā puṇyāni kṛtvā asmākaṃ nāmnā dakṣiṇāmādekṣyati-idaṃ tayoryatratatropapannayorgacchatoranugacchatu iti| āpannasattvāṃ viditvā upariprāsādatalagatāmayantritāṃ dhārayati tiktāmlalavaṇamadhurakaṭukaṣāyavivarjitairāhāraiḥ| hārārdhahārāvibhūṣitagātrīmapsarasamiva nandanavanacāriṇīṃ mañcānmañcaṃ pīṭhātpīṭhamanavatarantīmadharimāṃ bhūmim| na cāsyāḥ kiṃcidamanojñaśabdaśravaṇaṃ yāvadeva garbhasya paripākāya| sā aṣṭānāṃ vā navānāṃ vā māsānāmatyayātprasūtā| dārako jāto'bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko gauraḥ kanakavarṇaśchatrākāraśirāḥ pralambabāhurvistīrṇalalāṭa uccaghoṇaḥ saṃgatabhrūstuṅganāsaḥ sarvāṅgapratyaṅgopetaḥ| tasya jātau ānandabheryastāḍitāḥ| śrutvā rājā kathayati-kimetaditi| antaḥpurikābhī rājñe niveditam-deva, diṣṭyā vardhasva| putraste jāta iti| tato rājñā taṃ sarvaṃ nagaramapagatapāṣāṇasarkarakaṭhallaṃ vyavasthitam, candanavārisiktamucchritadhvajapatākaṃ surabhidhūpaghaṭikopanibaddhaṃ nānāpuṣpābhikīrṇaramaṇīyam| ājñā ca dattā-śramaṇabrāhmaṇakṛpaṇavanīpakebhyo dānaṃ prayacchataḥ, sarvabandhanamokṣaṃ ca kuruteti| tasyaivaṃ trīṇi saptakānyekaviṃśatidivasān vistareṇa jātakarma karoti| tasya jātimahaṃ kṛtvā nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitumārabdham-kiṃ bhavatu dārakasya nāmeti ? amātyāḥ kathayanti-ayaṃ dārako dhanasya rājñaḥ putraḥ, bhavatu dārakasya sudhano nāmeti| tasya sudhana iti nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitam| sudhano dārako'ṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo'nudatto dvābhyāmaṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dhātrībhyām| so'ṣṭābhirdhātrībhirunnīyate vardhyate kṣīreṇa daghnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍairvā anyaiścottaptottaptairupakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ| āśu vardhate hradasthamiva paṅkajam||



sa yadā mahān sṃvṛttastadā lipyāmupanyastaḥ sṃkhyāyāṃ gaṇanāyāṃ mudrāyāmuddhāre nyāse nikṣepe vastuparīkṣāyāṃ kumāraparīkṣāyāṃ kumārikāparīkṣāyāṃ dāruparīkṣāyāṃ ratnaparīkṣāyāṃ vastraparīkṣāyām| so'ṣṭāsu parīkṣāsu ghaṭako vācakaḥ paṇḍitaḥ paṭupracāraḥ saṃvṛttaḥ| sa yāni tāni bhavanti rājñāṃ kṣatriyāṇāṃ mūrdhābhiṣiktānāṃ janapadaiśvaryamanuprāptānāṃ mahāntaṃ pṛthivīmaṇḍalamabhinirjityādhyāvasatāṃ pṛthagbhavanti śilpasthānakarmasthānāni, tadyathā-hastigrīvāyāmaśvapṛṣṭhe rathe tsarau dhanuṣi apayāne niryāṇe'ṅkuśagrahe pāśagrahe chedye bhedye muṣṭibandhe śikhābandhe padabandhe dūravedhe śandavedhe marmavedhe'kṣuṇṇavedhe dṛḍhaprahāritāyām| pañcasthāneṣu kṛtāvī saṃvṛttaḥ| tasya pitrā trīṇyantaḥpurāṇi vyavasthāpitāni jyeṣṭhaṃ madhyaṃ kanīyasam| trīṇi vāsagṛhāṇi māpitāni, haimantikaṃ graiṣmikaṃ vārṣikam| trīṇyudyānāni māpitāni, haimantikaṃ graiṣmikaṃ vārṣikam| tataḥ sudhanakumāra upariprāsādatalagato niṣpuruṣeṇa tūryeṇa krīḍati ramate paricārayati||



yāvadapareṇa samayena halako lubdhako mṛgayāmanvesamāṇastena tenānuvicarannanyatamaṃ parvatamanuprāptaḥ| tasya ca parvatasyādhastādṛṣerāśramapadaṃ paśyati puṣpaphalasaṃpannaṃ nānāpakṣigaṇaḥvicaritam| mahāntaṃ ca hradamutpalakumudapuṇḍarīkasaṃchannaṃ haṃsakāraṇḍavacakravākopaśobhitam| sa tamāśramapadaṃ paribhramitumārabdhaḥ| yāvattaṃ ṛṣiṃ paśyati dīrghakeśaśmaśrunakharomāṇaṃ vātātapakarṣitaśarīraṃ cīvaravalkaladhāriṇamanyatamavṛkṣamūlāśrayatṛṇakuṭikākṛtanilayam| dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā kṛtāñjalipuṭaḥ papraccha-bhagavan, kiyacciramasmin pradeśe tava prativasataḥ ? catvāriṃśadvarṣāṇi| asti iyatā kālenāsmin pradeśe kaścidāścaryādbhutadharmo dṛṣṭaḥ śruto vā ? praśāntātmā ṛṣirmandaṃ mandamuvāca- bhadramukha, dṛṣṭaste'yaṃ hradaḥ ? dṛṣṭo bhagavan| eṣā brahmasabhā nāma puṣkiriṇī utpalapadmakumudapuṇḍarīkasaṃchannā nānāpakṣigaṇaniṣevitā himarajatatuṣāragaurāmbusaṃpūrṇā surabhikusumapūrṇatoyā| asyāṃ puṣkiriṇyāṃ pañcadaśamyāṃ manoharā nāma drumasya kinnararājasya duhitā pañcakinnarīśataparivārā nānāvidhasnānodvartanairāgatya snāti| snānakāle cāsyā madhuragītavāditaśabdena mṛgapakṣiṇo'vahriyante| ahamapi taṃ śabdaṃ śrutvā mahatā prītisaumanasyena saptāhamatināmayāmi| etadāścaryaṃ bhadramukha mayā dṛṣṭamiti| atha halakasya lubdhakasyaitadabhavat-śobhano'yaṃ mayā amoghaḥ pāśo nāgāllabdho manoharāyāḥ kinnaryāḥ kṣepsyāmīti| so'pareṇa samayena pūrṇapañcadaśyāmamoghaṃ pāśamādāya hadatīrasamīpe puṣpaphalaviṭapagahanamāśritya avadhānatatparo'vasthitaḥ| yāvanmanoharā kinnarī pañcaśataparivāritā tādṛśyaiva vibhūtyā brahmasabhāṃ puṣkiriṇīmavatīrṇā snātum| tatsamanantaraṃ ca halakena lubdhakena amoghaḥ pāśaḥ kṣiptaḥ, yena manoharā kinnarī baddhā| tayā amoghapāśaśritayā hrade mahāhatanādaḥ kṛto bhīṣaṇaśca śabdo niścāritaḥ, yaṃ śrutvā pariśiṣṭaḥ kinnarigaṇa itaścāmutaśca saṃbhrānto manoharāṃ nirīkṣitumārabdhaḥ| paśyanti baddhām| dṛṣṭvā ca punarbhītā niṣpalāyitāḥ| adrākṣītsa lubdhakastāṃ paramarūpadarśanīyām| dṛṣṭvā ca punarupaśliṣṭo grahīṣyāmīti| sā āha- hā hatāsmi, hā mandabhāgyā, mamedṛśīmavasthāmāptām|



mā naiṣīstvaṃ hi mā sprākṣīrnaitattava suceṣṭitam|

rājabhogyā surūpāhaṃ na sādhu grahaṇaṃ tava||1|| iti||



lubdhakaḥ prāha-yadi tvāṃ na gṛhṇāmi, niṣpalāyase| sā kathayati-nāhaṃ niṣpalāye| yadi na śraddadhāsi, imaṃ cūḍāmaṇiṃ gṛhāṇa| asyānubhāvenāhamuparivihāyasā gacchāmīti| lubdhakaḥ kathayati - kathaṃ jāne ? tayā śirasthaścūḍāmaṇirdatta uktaśca-eṣa cūḍāmaṇiryasya haste, tasyāhaṃ vaśā bhavāmi| tato lubdhakenāsau cūḍāmaṇirgṛhītaḥ, pāśabaddhāṃ caināṃ saṃprasthitaḥ||



tena khalu samayena sudhanarājakumāro mṛgayānirgataḥ| adrākṣītsa lubdhakaḥ sudhanaṃ rājakumāramabhirūpaṃ darśanīyaṃ prāsādikam| dṛṣṭvā ca punarasyaitadabhavat-ayaṃ ca rājakumāraḥ, iyaṃ ca paramadarśanīyā| yadyenāṃ drakṣyati, balādgrahīṣyati| yannvahamenāṃ prābhṛtanyāyena svayamevopanayeyam| tatastāṃ pāśabaddhāmādāya yena rājakumārastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ| upasaṃkramya pādayornipatya kathayati-idaṃ mama devasya strīratnaṃ prābhṛtamānītam, pratigṛhyatāmiti| adrākṣītsudhanakumāro manoharāṃ kinnarīmabhirūpāṃ darśanīyāṃ prāsādikāṃ paramaśubhavarṇapuṣkalatayā samanvāgatāṃ sarvaguṇasamuditāmaṣṭādaśabhiḥ strīlakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛtāṃ janapadakalyāṇāṃ kāñcanakalaśakūrmapīnonnatakaṭhinasahitasujātavṛttapragalbhamānastanīmabhinīlaraktāṃśukavisṛtāyatana-vakamalasadṛśanayanāṃ subhruvamāyatatuṅganāsāṃ vidrumamaṇīratnabimbaphalasaṃsthānasadṛśādharoṣṭhīṃ sudṛḍhaparipūrṇagaṇḍapārśvāmatyartharatikarakapolatilakānupūrvacaritāṃ saṃgatabhruvāravindavikacasadṛśaparipūrṇavimalaśaśivapuṣaṃ pralambabāhuṃ gambhīratrivalikasaṃtatamadhyāṃ stanabhārāvanāmyamānapūrvārdhāṃ rathāṅgasaṃsthitasujātajaghanāṃ kadalīgarbhasadṛśakarānupūrvāvasthitasujātakarabhoruṃ sunigūḍhasuracitasarvāṅgasundaraśirāṃ sahitamaṇipīḍāsaṃraktakaratalapraharṣanūpuravalayāṃ hārārdhahāranirghoṣavimalaśitagatimāyatanīlasūkṣmakeśīṃ sacīvaraprabhraṣṭakāñcīguṇāṃ nūpurāvacchāditapādāṃ kṣāmodarīm| tāṃ pratikīrṇahārāmuttaptajāmbūnadacārupūrṇāṃ dṛṣṭvā kumāraḥ sahasā papāta viddho dṛḍharāgaśareṇa| tatra sa rāgavarāhadavadahanapataṅgasadṛśena jalacandracañcalavimalojjvalasvabhāvena durgrāhyatareṇa nadītaraṅgajhaṣamakarasurabhigamanena garuḍapavanajavasamagatinā tūlaparivartanalaghutareṇa vānarāvasthitacapalodbhrāntatareṇa satatābhyāsakleśaniṣevaṇarāgasukhāsvādalobhena sarvakleśaviṣamadurgaprapātaniḥsaṅgena paramasalīlena cittena tadbhūtānugatayā āyoniśomanaskāradhanurvisṛtaiḥ saṃyogābhilaṣitaparamarahasyaśabdena kāmaśareṇa hṛdaye viddhaḥ| āha ca-



dṛṣṭvā ca tāṃ sudhana indusamānavakrāṃ

prāvṛḍghanāntaraviniścariteva vidyut|

tatsnehamanmathavilāsasamudbhavena

sadyaḥ sa cetasi nu rāgaśareṇa viddhaḥ||2||



sa tāmatimanoharāṃ gṛhītvā hastināpuraṃ gataḥ| sa ca lubdhaḥ pañcagrāmavareṇācchāditaḥ| tataḥ sudhano rājakumāro manoharayā rūpayauvanaguṇena sudhanaḥ kumāro'nekaiścopacāraśataistathā apahṛto yathā muhūrtamapi tāṃ na jahāti| yāvadapareṇa samayena jetavanādvau brāhmaṇau abhyāgatau| tatraiko rājānaṃ saṃśritaḥ, dvitīyaḥ sudhanaṃ kumāram| yo rājānaṃ saṃśritaḥ, sa rājñā purohitaḥ sthāpito bhogaiśca saṃvibhaktaḥ| yastu sudhanaṃ kumāram, sa bhogamātreṇa saṃvibhaktaḥ| sa kathayadi- kumāra, yadā tvaṃ pituratyayādrāṣṭre pratiṣṭhāsyasi, tadā me kiṃ kariṣyasīti ?| sudhanaḥ kathayati-yathā tava sahāyo brāhmaṇo mama pitrā paurihitye'vasthāpitaḥ, evamahaṃ tvāmapi paurohitye sthāpayāmīti| eṣa ca vṛttāntastena brāhmaṇena karṇaparaṃparayā śrutaḥ| tasyaitadabhavat- ahaṃ tathā kariṣye, yathā kumāro rājyameva nāsādayiṣyati, kutastaṃ purohitaṃ sthāpayiṣyatīti ? yāvadapareṇa samayena tasya rājño vijite'nyatamaḥ kārvaṭikaḥ prativiruddhaḥ, tasya samucchittaye eko daṇḍaḥ preṣitaḥ| sa hatavihatavidhvastaḥ pratyāgataḥ| evaṃ yāvatsapta, ye daṇḍāḥ preṣitāḥ, te'pi hastavidhvastāḥ pratyāgatāḥ| amātyai rājā vijñāpitaḥ-deva, kimarthaṃ svabalaṃ hāryate, paraṃ vardhyate ? yāvannaikaḥ kaściddevasya vijite śastrabalopajīvī sarvo'sau āhūyatāmiti| brāhmaṇaḥ purohitaḥ saṃlakṣayati - ayaṃ sa kumārasya vadhopāyakāla iti| tena rājā vijñaptaḥ-deva, naivamasau śakyaḥ saṃnāmayitum| rājā kathayati-kiṃ mayā svayaṃ gantavyam ? purohitaḥ kathayati-kimarthaṃ devaḥ svayaṃ gacchati ? ayaṃ sudhanaḥ kumāro yuvā baladarpayuktaḥ| eṣa daṇḍasahāyaḥ preṣyatāmiti| rājā kathayati-evamastviti| tato rājā kumāramāhūya kathayati- gaccha kumāra, daṇḍasahāyaḥ kārvaṭikaṃ saṃnāmaya| evaṃ deveti sudhanaḥ kumāro rājñaḥ pratiśrutya antaḥpuraṃ praviṣṭaḥ| manoharādarśanāccāsya sarvaṃ vismṛtam| punarapi rājñā abhihitaḥ-punarapi taddarśanātsarvaṃ bismṛtam| purohitena cābhihitaḥ- deva, sudhanaḥ kumāro manoharayā atīva sakto na śakyate preṣayitum| rājā kathayati- sādhanaṃ sajjaṃ kriyatām| nirgataḥ kumāro'ntaḥpurāt preṣayitavyo yathā manoharāyāḥ sakāśaṃ na prativasatīti| evaṃ deveti amātyai rājñaḥ pratiśrutya balaugho hastyaśvarathapadātisaṃpanno'nekapraharaṇopakaraṇayuktaḥ sajjīkṛtaḥ| tataḥ kumāro nirgataḥ uktaḥ-gaccha kumāra, sajjo balaugha iti| sa kathayati-deva, gamiṣyāmi manoharāṃ dṛṣṭvā| rājā kathayati-kumāra na draṣṭavyā, kālo'tivartate| sa kathayatio-tāvadyadi evam, mātaraṃ dṛṣṭvā gacchāmi| gaccha kumāra avalokya jananīm| sa manoharāsantakaṃ cūḍāmaṇimādāya mātuḥsakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ| pādayornipatya kathayati-amba, aham kārvaṭikaṃ saṃnāmanātha gacchāmi|



duhitā śakrakalpasya kinnarendrasya māninī|

pālyā virahaśokārtā madvātsalyadhiyā tvayā||3||



ayaṃ cūḍāmaṇiḥ suguptaṃ sthāpayitavyaḥ| na kadācinmanoharāyā dātabyo'nyatra prāṇaviyogāditi| sa evaṃ mātaraṃ pitaraṃ saṃdiśya abhivādya ca nānāyodhabalaughatūryanirnāditaiḥ saṃprasthitaḥ| anupūrveṇa janapadānatikramya tasya kārvaṭikasya nātidūre'nyatamaṃ vṛkṣamūlaṃ niśritya vāsamupagataḥ| tena khalu samayena vaiśravaṇo mahārājo'nekayakṣaparivāro'nekayakṣaśatasahasraparivāraḥ| tena yakṣāṇāṃ yakṣasamitiṃ saṃprasthitaḥ| tasya tena pathā gacchataḥ khagapathena yānamavasthitam| tasyaitadabhavat-bahuśo'hamanena pathā samatikrāntaḥ| na ca me kadācidyānaṃ pratihatam| ko'tra heturyenedānīṃ pratihata iti ? paśyati sudhanaṃ kumāram| tasyaitadabhavat- ayaṃ bhadrakalpiko bodhisattvaḥ khedamapatsyati yuddhāyābhiprasthitaḥ| sāhāyyamasya karaṇīyam| kārvaṭikaḥ saṃnāmayitavyaḥ| na ca kasyacitprāṇinaḥ pīḍā karaṇīyeti viditvā pāñcikaṃ mahāyakṣasenāpatimāmantrayate- ehi tvaṃ pāñcika, sudhanasya kumārasya kārvaṭikamayuddhena saṃnāmaya| na ca te kasyacitprāṇinaḥ pīḍā kartavyeti| tatheti pāñcikena yakṣasenāpatinā vaiśravaṇasya mahārājasya pratiśrutya divyaścaturaṅgo balakāyo nirmitaḥ-tālamātrapramāṇāḥ puruṣāḥ, parvatapramāṇā hastinaḥ, hastipramāṇā aśvāḥ| tato nānāvidhakhaṅgamuśalatomarapāśacakraśaraparaśvadhādiśastraviśeṣeṇa nānāvāditrasaṃkṣobheṇa ca mahābhayamupadarśayan mahatā balaughena pāñciko'nuprāptaḥ|



hastyaśvarathanirghoṣānnānāvāditranisvanāt|

yakṣāṇāṃ svaprabhāvācca prākāraḥ prapapātaḥ vai||4||



tataste karvakanivāsinastaṃ balaughaṃ dṛṣṭvā tacca prākārapatanaṃ paraṃ viṣādamāpannāḥ papracchuḥ-kuta eṣa balaugha āgacchatīti ? te kathayanti- śīghraṃ śīghra dvārāṇi muñcata| eṣa pṛṣṭhataḥ kumāra āgacchati| tasya ca balaugho yadi ciraṃ vidhārayiṣyatha, sarvathā na bhaviṣyatheti| te kathayanti-



vyutpannā na vayaṃ rājño na kumārasya dhīmataḥ|

nṛpapauruṣakebhyo sma bhītāḥ saṃtrāsamāgatāḥ||5||



tairdvārāṇi muktāni| tata ucchritadhvajapatākāpūrṇakalaśā nānāvidhatūryanirnāditaiḥ sudhanaṃ kumāraṃ pratyudgatāḥ| tena ca samāśvāsitāḥ, tadabhiprāyaśca rājabhaṭaḥ sthāpitaḥ| nipakāśca nigṛhītāḥ| karapratyāyāśca nibaddhāḥ| tatastaṃ karvaṭakaṃ sphītīkṛtya sudhanakumāraḥ pratinivṛttaḥ| dhanena ca rājñā tāmeva rātriṃ svapno dṛṣṭaḥ- gṛdhreṇāgatya rājña udaraṃ sphoṭayitvā antrāṇyākṛṣya sarvaṃ tannagaramantrairveṣṭitam , sapta ratnāni gṛhaṃ praveśyamānāni dṛṣṭāni| tato rājā bhītastrastaḥ saṃvigna āhṛṣṭaromakūpo paghulaghvevotthāya mahāśayane niṣadya kare kapolaṃ dattvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ-mā haiva me atonidānaṃ rājyāccyutirbhaviṣyati, jīvitasya vā antarāya iti| sa prabhātāyāṃ rajanyāṃ svapnaṃ brāhmaṇāya purohitāya nivedayāmāsa| sa saṃlakṣayati-yādṛśo devena svapno dṛṣṭaḥ, niyataṃ kumāreṇa karvaṭako nirjitaḥ| vitathanirdeśaḥ karaṇīyaḥ| iti kṛtvā kathayati-deva, na śobhanaḥ svapnaḥ| niyatamatonidānaṃ rājyāccyutirbhaviṣyati, jīvitasyāntarāya iti| kevalaṃ tu atrāsti pratikāraḥ, sa ca brāhmaṇakamantreṣu dṛṣṭaḥ| ko'sau pratikāraḥ ? deva, udyāne puṣkariṇī puruṣapramāṇikā kartavyā| tataḥ sudhayā praleptavyā| susaṃmṛṣṭāṃ kṛtvā kṣudramṛgāṇāṃ rudhireṇa pūrayitavyā| tato devena snānaprayatena tāṃ puṣkariṇīmekena sopānenāvataritavyam, ekenāvatīrya dvitīyenottaritavyam, dvitīyenāttīrya tṛtīyenāvataritavyam, tṛtīyenāvatīrya caturthenottaritavyam| tataścaturbhirbrāhmaṇairvedavedāṅgapāragairdevasya pādayorjihvayā nirleḍhavyam, kinnaravasayā ca dhūpo deyaḥ| evaṃ devo vidhūtapāpaściraṃ rājyaṃ pālayiṣyatīti| rājā kathayati- sarvametacchakyaṃ yadidaṃ kinnaramedamatīva durlabham| purohitaḥ kathayati- deva, yadeva durlabhaṃ tadeva sulabham| rājā kathayati- yathā katham ? purohitaḥ kathayati- deva, nanviyaṃ manoharā kinnarī| rājā kathayati- purohita, mā maivaṃ vada| kumārasyātra prāṇāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ| sa kathayati- nanu devena śrutam-



tyajedekaṃ kulasyārthe grāmasyārthe kulaṃ tyajet|

grāmaṃ janapadasyārthe ātmārthe pṛthivīṃ tyajet||6||



dṛḍhenāddhyātmanā (?) rājyaṃ kumārasyāsya dhīmataḥ|

śakṣyasi hyaparāṃ kartuṃ ghātayaināṃ manoharām||7|| iti|



ātmābhinandino na kiṃcinna pratipadyanta iti tenādhivāsitam| tato yathopadiṣṭaṃ purohitena kārayitumārabdham| puṣkariṇī khātā sudhayopaliptā saṃmṛṣṭā kṣudramṛgarudhiramupāvartayitumārabdham| sa ca prayogaḥ| sudhanasyāntaḥpurajanenopalabdhaḥ| tāḥ prītimanasaḥ saṃvṛttāḥ - vayaṃ rūpayauvanasaṃpannāḥ| idānīmasmākaṃ sudhanaḥ kumāraḥ paricārayiṣyatīti| tāḥ pramuditā dṛṣṭvā manoharā pṛcchati-kiṃ yūyamatīva praharṣitā iva ? yāvadaparayā sa vṛttānto vistareṇa manoharāyā niveditaḥ| tato manoharā saṃjātaduḥkhadaurmanasyā yena sudhanasya kumārasya jananī tenopasaṃkrāntā| upasaṃkramya pādayornipatya karuṇadīnavilambitairakṣarairetamarthaṃ nivedayāmāsa| sā kathayati- yadyevaṃ svāgatamidaṃ kuru vicārayiṣyāmīti| manoharayā āgamya punarapi samākhyātam| tayā api vicāritam| paśyati bhūtam| tatastayā sa cūḍāmaṇirvastrāṇi ca manoharāyai dattāni, uktā ca-putrike, prāpte kāle āgantavyam| evaṃ mamopālambhe na bhavatīti| tato rājā yathādiṣṭena krameṇa snānaprayato rudhirapūrṇāṃ puṣkiriṇīmavatīryottīrṇaḥ| tato'sya brāhmaṇairjihvayā pādau nilīḍhau, avasthitaḥ- ānīyatāṃ kinnarīti ca samādiṣṭam| tatsamanantarameva manoharā gaganatalamutplutya gāthāṃ bhāṣate-



sparśasaṃgamanaṃ mahyaṃ hasitaṃ ramitaṃ ca me|

nāgīva bandhanānmuktā eṣā gacchāmi sāṃpratam||8|| iti|



rājñā dṛṣṭvā vāyupathena gacchantī| sa bhītaḥ purohitamāmantrayate-yadarthaṃ kṛto yatnaḥ, sa na saṃpannaḥ, manoharā kinnarī niṣpalāyiteti| purohitaḥ kathayati-deva, siddhārtho'pagatapāpo devaḥ sāṃpratamiti| tato manoharāyāḥ khagapathena gacchantyā etadabhavat-yadahametāmavasthāṃ prāptā, tattasya ṛṣervyapadeśāt| yadi tena nākhyātamabhaviṣyat, nāhaṃ grahaṇaṃ gatā abhaviṣyat| tena hi yāsyāmi tāvadasyaiva ṛṣeḥ sakāśamiti| sā tasyāśramapadaṃ gatā| pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā taṃ ṛṣimuvāca- maharṣe, tava vyapadeśādahaṃ grahaṇaṃ gatā, manuṣyasya saṃsparśaśca saṃprāptaḥ| jīvitāntarāyaścaitatsaṃvṛttaḥ| tadvijñāpayāmi-yadi yadā kadācitsudhanaḥ kumāra āgacchati māṃ samanveṣamāṇaḥ, tasyemāmaṅgulimudrāṃ dātumarhasi| evaṃ ca vaktavyam- kumāra, viṣamāḥ panthāno durgamāḥ, khedamāpatsyase, nivartasveti| yadi nivāryamāṇo na tiṣṭhet, tasya mārgaṃ vyapadeṣṭumarhasi-kumāra, manoharayā samākhyātam-uttare digbhāge trayaḥ kālaparvatāḥ, tānatikramya apare trayaḥ, tānapyatikramya apare trayaḥ, tānatikramya himavān parvatarājaḥ, tasyottareṇotkilakaparvataḥ, tara utkūlako jalapatha ekadhārako vajrakaḥ kāmarūpī| utkīlaka airāvato'dhobāṇaḥ pramokṣaṇaḥ ete parvatāḥ samatikramaṇīyāḥ| tatra khadirake parvate guhā, praveśa ekadhārake tu kīlakāḥ, vajrake pakṣirājena praveśaḥ| ebhirupāyaiste parvatā atikramaṇīyāḥ, yantrāṇi ca bhaṅktavyāni| ajavaktrameṇḍhakaḥ puruṣo rākṣasarūpī piṅgalāguhāyāṃ lālāsrotasā mahānajagaro vegena pradhāvati| sa te vikrameṇa hantavyaḥ| arāntaragatāṃ nābhīṃ yatra paśyettatra kiṭibhakaśca|



ayaṃ muktena bāṇena hantavyo mama kāraṇāt|

yatra paśyeddvau meṣau saṃghaṭṭantau parasparam|

tayoḥ śṛṅgamekaṃ bhaṅktvā mārgaṃ pratilapsyase||9||



āyasau puruṣau dṛṣṭvā śastrapāṇī mahābhayau|

tayorekaṃ pādayitvā mārgaṃ pratilapsyase|| 10||



saṃkocayantīṃ prasārayantīṃ rākṣasīmāyasaṃ mukham|

yadā paśyettatra kīlakaṃ lalāṭe tasyā nikhānayet||11||



śūlāvartastadā kūpo vilaṅghyaste ṣaṣṭihastakaḥ|

haripiṅgalakeśākṣo dāruṇo yatra rākṣasaḥ||12||



kārmukaṃ maṇḍalaṃ kṛtvā hantavyaśca durāsadaḥ|

nadyaśca bahavastāryā naktragrahasamākulāḥ||13||



raṅgā pataṅgā tapanī citrā rudantī hasantī āśīviṣā vetranadī ca|

raṅgāyāṃ rākṣasīkopaḥ pataṅgāyāmamanuṣyakāḥ|

tapantyāṃ grāhabahulatvaṃ citrāyāṃ kāmarūpiṇaḥ||14||



rudantyāṃ kinnarīceṭyo sahantyāṃ kinnarasnuṣā|

āśīviṣāyāṃ nānāvidhāṃ sarpā vetranadyāṃ tu śalmaliḥ||15||



raṅgāyāṃ dhairyakaraṇaṃ pataṅgāyāṃ parākramaḥ|

tapantyāṃ grāhamukhabandhaṃ citrāyāṃ vividhagītam||16||



rudantyāṃ saumanasye samuttāram, hasantyāṃ tūṣṇībhāvayogena, āśīviṣāyāṃ sarpaviṣamantrayogena, vetranadyāṃ tīkṣṇaśastrasaṃpātayogena samuttāraḥ| nadīḥ samatikramya pañca yakṣaśatāni gulmakam| taddhairyamāsthāya vidrāvyam| tato drumasya kinnararājasya bhavanamiti| tato manoharā taṃ ṛṣimevamuktvā pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā prakrāntā||



yāvatsudhanaḥ kumārastaṃ karvaṭakaṃ saṃnāmya gṛhītaprābhṛto hastināpuramanuprāptaḥ| śrutvā ca rājā parāṃ prītimupagataḥ| tataḥ kumāro mārgaśramaṃ prativinodya pituḥ sakāśaṃ gataḥ| praṇāmaṃ kṛtvā purastānniṣaṇṇaḥ| rājñā paramayā saṃtoṣaṇayā saṃbhāṣitaḥ, uktaśca-kumāra, śivena tvamāgataḥ ? deva, tava prasādātkarvaṭakaḥ saṃnāmitaḥ, nipakā gṛhītāḥ, cintakaḥ sthāpitaḥ| ime tu karapratyayāḥ| paṇyāgāraśca sthāpyatāmiti| rājā kathayati- śobhanaṃ pratigṛhītam| tataḥ pituḥ praṇāmaṃ kṛtvā saṃprasthitaḥ| rājā kathayati-kumāra tiṣṭha, prābhṛtaṃ sahitā eva bhokṣyāmaḥ| deva gacchāmi, ciraṃ dṛṣṭvā me manoharā| alaṃ kumāra adya gamanena| tiṣṭha, śvo gamiṣyasīti| so'navabudhyamāna evamāha-tāta, adyaiva mayā avaśyaṃ gantavyam| rājā tūṣṇīmavasthitaḥ| tataḥ kumāraḥ svagṛhaṃ gataḥ| yāvatpaśyati śriyā varjitamantaḥpuradvāram| sa cintāparaḥ praviśya manoharāṃ na paśyati| itaścāmutaśca saṃbhrāntaḥ śūnyahṛdayaḥ śabdaṃ kartumārabdha-manohare manohare iti| yāvadantaḥpuraṃ saṃnipatitam| tāḥ striyaḥ kṣepaṃ kartumārabdhāḥ| viddho'sau hṛdayaśalyena sutarāṃ praṣṭumārabdhaḥ| tāmiryathābhūtaṃ samākhyātam| sa śokena saṃpramuhyate| tāḥ striyaḥ kathayantideva, asminnantaḥpure tatpraviśiṣṭatarāḥ striyaḥ santi, kimarthaṃ śokaḥ kriyate ? sapiturnairguṇyamupaśrutya kṛtaghnatāṃ ca, mātuḥ sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ| pādayornipatya kathayati- amba,



manoharāṃ na paśyāmi manorathaguṇairyutām|

sādhurūpasamāyuktā kka gatā me manoharā||17||



manasā saṃpradhāvāmi mano me saṃpramuhyate|

hṛdayaṃ dahyate caiva rahitasya tayā bhṛśam|| 18||



manobhirāmā ca manoharā ca

manonukūlā ca manoratiśca|

saṃtaptadeho'smi manoharāṃ vinā

kuto mamedaṃ vyasanaṃ samāgatam||19|| iti|



sā kathayati-putra, kṛcchrasaṃkaṭasaṃbādhaprāptā manohareti mayā pratimuktā| amba, yathā katham ? tayā yathāvṛttaṃ vistareṇa samākhyātam| sa piturnairguṇyamakṛtajñatāṃ ca jñātvā kathayati-kutra gatā katareṇa vā patheti ? sā kathayati-



eṣo'sau parvataśaila ṛṣisaṃghaniṣevitaḥ|

uṣito dharmarājena yatra yātā manoharā||20|| iti|



sa manoharāviyogaduḥkhārtaḥ kṛcchraṃ vilalāpa, karuṇaṃ paridevate-

manoharāṃ na paśyāmi manorathaguṇairyutām|

sādhurūpasamāyuktā kka gatā me manoharā|| 21||



manasā saṃpradhāvāmi mano me saṃpramuhyate|

hṛdayaṃ dahyate caiva rahitasya tayā bhṛśam||22||



manobhirāmā ca manoharā ca

manonukūlā ca manoratiśca|

saṃtaptadeho'smi manoharāṃ vinā

kuto mamedaṃ vyasanaṃ samāgatam|| 23|| iti||



tato mātrā abhihitaḥ-putra, santyasminnantaḥpure tadviśiṣṭatarāḥ striyaḥ| kimarthaṃ śokaḥ kriyata iti ? kumāraḥ kathayati-kuto me ratiranuprāpyatāmiti ? sa tayā samāśvāsyamāno'pi śokasaṃtāpasaṃtaptastasyāḥ pravṛttiṃ samanveṣamāṇa itaścāmutaśva paribhamitumārabdhaḥ| tasya buddhirutpannā-yata eva labdhastameva tāvatpṛcchāmi| sa halakasya sakāśaṃ gataḥ pṛcchati-manoharā kutastvayā labdheti ? sa kathayati- amuṣmin pradeśe ṛṣiḥ prativasati| tasyāśramapade brahmasabhā nāma puṣkiriṇī| tasyāṃ snātumavatīrṇā ṛṣivyapadeśena labdheti| sa saṃlakṣayati-ṛṣiridānīmabhigantavyaḥ, tasmātpravṛttirbhaviṣyatīti| eṣa ca vṛttānto rājñā śrutaḥ manoharāviyogātkumāro'tīva viklava iti| tato rājñā abhihitaḥ-kumāraḥ, kimasi viklavaḥ ? idānīṃ tadviśiṣṭataramantaḥpuraṃ vyavasthāpayiṣyāmīti| sa kathayati- tāta, na śakyaṃ mayā tāmanānīya antaḥ purasthena bhavitum| sa rājñā bahvapyucyamāno na nivartate| tato rājñā nagaraprākāraśṛṅgeṣvārakṣakāḥ puruṣāḥ sthāpitāḥ, yathā kumāro na niṣkāsatīti| kumāraḥ kṛtsnāṃ rātriṃ jāgartukāmaḥ| uktaṃ ca - pañceme rātryā alpaṃ svapanti bahu jāgarti| katame pañca puruṣāḥ ? striyāmavekṣya (pekṣā ?) vān pratibaddhacittaḥ| strīpuruṣa utkrośaḥ, ṛṇī, caurasenāpatiḥ, bhikṣuścālabdhavīrya iti| atha kumārasyaitadabhavat-yadi dvāreṇa yāsyāmi, ājā dvārapālakān rakṣakāṃśca daṇḍenotsādayiṣyati| yannvahamarakṣitena pathā gaccheyāmiti| sa rātryā vyutthāya nīlotpalamālābaddhaśirā yena rakṣiṇaḥ puruṣā na santi, tena tāṃ mālā dhvaje baddhvā avatīrṇaḥ| candraścoditaḥ| tato'sau candramavekṣya manoharāvirahita evaṃ vilalāpa-



bhoḥ pūrṇacandra rajanīkara tārarāja

tvaṃ rohiṇinayanakānta susārthavāha|

kaccitpriyā mama manoharaṇaikadakṣā

dṛṣṭā tvayā bhuvi manoharanāmadheyā||24|| iti||



anubhūtapūrvaratimanusmaran jagāma| dadarśa mṛgīm| tāmapyuvāca-

he tvaṃ kuraṅgi tṛṇavāripalāśabhakṣe

svastyastu te cara sukhaṃ na mṛgārirasmi|

dīrghekṣaṇā mṛgavadhūkamanīyarūpā

dṛṣṭā tvayā mama manoharanāmadheyā||25||



sa tāmatikramya anyatamaṃ pradeśaṃ gato dadarśa vanaṃ nānāpuṣpaphalopaśobhitaṃ bhramarairupabhujyamānasāram| tato'nyatamaṃ bhramaramuvāca-

nīlāñjanācalasuvarṇa madhudvirepha

vaṃśāntarāmburuhamadhyakṛtādhivāsa|

varṇādhimātrasadṛśāyatakeśahastā

dṛṣṭā tvayā mama manoharanāmadheyā||26||



tasmādapi pradeśādatikrāntaḥ paśyatyāśīviṣam| dṛṣṭvā cāha-

bhoḥ kṛṣṇasarpa tanupallavalolajihva

vaktrāntarotpatitadhūmakalāpavaktra|

rāgāgninā gata samo na viṣāgnirugro

dṛṣṭvā tvayā mama manoharanāmadheyā||27||



tamapi pradeśaṃ samatikrānto dadarśāparaṃ kokilābhināditam| dṛṣṭvā ca punastaṃ kokilamuvāca-

bhoḥ kokilottama vanāntaravṛkṣavāsin

nārī manohara patatrigaṇasya rājan|

nīlotpalāmalasamāyatacārunetrā

dṛṣṭā tvayā mama manoharanāmadheyā||28||



tamapi pradeśaṃ smatikrānto dadarśāśokavṛkṣaṃ sarvapariphullam|

maṅgalyanāmāntaranāmayukta

sarvadrumāṇāmadhirājatulya|

manoharāśoka vimūrcchitaṃ māṃ

eṣo'ñjaliste kuru vītaśokam||29||



sa evaṃ viklavo'nupūrveṇa tasya ṛṣerāśramapadamanuprāptaḥ| sa taṃ ṛṣiṃ savinayaṃ praṇipatyovāca-



cīrājināmbaradhara kṣamayā viśiṣṭa

mūlāṅkurāmalakabilvakapitthabhakta|

vande ṛṣe nataśirā vada me laghu tvaṃ

dṛṣṭā tvayā mama manoharanāmadheyā|| 30||



tataḥ sa ṛṣiḥ sudhanaṃ kumāraṃ svāgatavacanāsanadānakriyādipuraḥsaraḥ pratisaṃmodya uvāca-

dṛṣṭā sā paripūrṇacandravadanā nīlotpalābhāsvarā

rūpeṇa priyadarśanā suvadanā nīlāñcitabhrūlatā|

tvaṃ svastho bhuvi bhujyatāṃ hi vividhaṃ mūlaṃ phalaṃ ca prabho

paścātsvasti gamiṣyasīti manasā nātrāsti me saṃśayaḥ||31||



idaṃ hyavocadvacanaṃ ca subhrūḥ

kumāra tṛṣṇā tvayi bādhate me|

mahacca duḥkhaṃ vasatāṃ vaneṣu

yātāṃ ramāṃ drakṣyasi niścayena||32|| iti||



iyaṃ ca tayā aṅgulimudrikā dattā| kathayati ca-kumāra, viṣamāḥ panthāno durgamāḥ| khedamāpatsyase, nivartasveti| yadi ca nivāryamāṇo na tiṣṭhet, tasya mārgamupadeṣṭumarhasi| kumāra, idaṃ ca tayā samākhyātam-uttare digbhāge trayaḥ kālaparvatāḥ, tānatikramya apare trayaḥ, tānapyatikramya himavān parvatarājaḥ| tatpraveśena vayā imāni bhaiṣajyāni samudānetavyāni- tadyathā sūdayā nāmauṣadhistayā ghṛtaṃ paktvā pātavyam| tena ca te na tṛṣā na bubhukṣā, smṛtibalaṃ ca vardhayati| vānaraḥ samudānetavyaḥ, mantramadhyetavyam, saśaraṃ dhanurgrahītavyam, maṇayo'vabhāsātmakāḥ agado viṣaghātako'yaskīlāstrayo vīṇā ca| himavataḥ parvarājasyottareṇotkīlakaḥ parvataḥ| tataḥ kūlako jalapathaḥ khadiraka ekadhārako vajrakaḥ kāmarūpī| utkīlaka airāvatako'dhobāṇaḥ pramokṣaka ete parvatāḥ| sarve te samatikramaṇīyāḥ| tatra khadirake parvate guhā, praveśa ekadhārake tu kīlakāḥ, vajrake pakṣirājena praveśaḥ| ebhirupāyaiste sarve parvatāḥ samatikramaṇīyāḥ, yantrāṇi ca bhaṅktavyāni| ajavaktro meṇḍhakaḥ puruṣo rākṣasīrūpī piṅgalāyāṃ guhāyāṃ lālāsrotasā mahatā ajagaro vegena pradhāvati| sa te vikrameṇa hantavyaḥ| arāntaragatāṃ nābhīṃ yatra paśyettatra kiṭibhakaśca|



ayaṃ muktena bāṇena hantavyo mama kāraṇāt|

yatra paśyeddvau meṣau saṃghaṭṭantau parasparam|

tayoḥ śṛṅgamekaṃ bhaṅktvā mārgaṃ pratilapsyase||33||



āyasau puruṣau dṛṣṭvā śastrapāṇī mahābhayau|

tayorekaṃ tāḍayitvā mārgaṃ pratilapsyase||34||



saṃkocayantīṃ prasārayantīṃ rākṣasīmāyasaṃ mukham|

yadā paśyettadā kīlaṃ lalāṭe tasyā nikhānayet||35||



śūlāvartastadā kūpo vilaṅghyaste ṣaṣṭihastakaḥ|

haripiṅgalakeśākṣo dāruṇo yakṣarākṣasaḥ|| 36||



kārmukaṃ maṇḍalaṃ kṛtvā hantavyaśca durāsadaḥ|

nadyaśca bahavastāryā naktragrāhasamākulāḥ||37||



raṅgā pataṅgā tapanī citrā rudantī hasantī āśīviṣā vetranadī ca|

raṅgāyāṃ rākṣasīkopaḥ pataṅgāyāmamānuṣāḥ|

tapantyāṃ grāhabahutvaṃ citrāyāṃ kāmarūpiṇaḥ||38||



rudantyāṃ kinnarīceṭyo hasantyāṃ kinnarīsnuṣā|

āśīviṣāyāṃ nānāvidhāḥ sarpā vetranadyāṃ tu śālmaliḥ||39||



raṅgāyāṃ dhairyakaraṇaṃ pataṅgāyāṃ parākramaḥ|

tapantyāṃ grāhamukhabandhaścitrāyāṃ vividhaṃ gītam||40||



rudantyāṃ saumanasyena samuttāraḥ| hasantyāṃ tūṣṇībhāvena, āśīviṣāyāṃ sarvaviṣamantraprayogeṇa samuttāraḥ, vetanadyāṃ tīkṣṇaśastrasaṃpātayogena samuttāraḥ| nadīmatikramya pañca yakṣaśatāni gulmakasthānam| taddhairyamāsthāya vidrāvyam| tato drumasya kinnararājasya bhavanamiti||



tataḥ sudhanaḥ kumāro yathopadiṣṭānauṣadhimantrāgadaprayogān samudānīya tasya ṛṣeḥ pādābhivandanaṃ kṛtvā prakrāntaḥ| tatastena yathopadiṣṭāḥ sarve samudānītāḥ sthāpavitvā vānaram| tatastānādāya punarapi tasya ṛṣeḥ sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ| uktaśca-alaṃ kumāra, kimanena vyavasāyena ? kiṃ manoharayā ? tvamekākī asahāyaḥ śarīrasaṃśayavāpsyasīti| kumāraḥ prāhamaharṣe, avaśyamevāhaṃ prayāsyāmīti| kutaḥ ?



candrasya khe vicarataḥ kka sahāyabhāvo

daṃṣṭrābalena balinaśca mṛgādhipasya|

agneśca dāvadahane kka sahāyabhāvaḥ

asmadvidhasya ca sahāyabalena kiṃ syāt|| 41||



kiṃ bho mahārṇavajalaṃ na vigāhitavyaṃ

kiṃ sarpadaṣṭa iti naiva cikitsanīyaḥ||

vīryaṃ bhajetsumahadūrjitasattvadṛṣṭaṃ

yatne kṛte yadi na siddhyati ko'tra doṣaḥ||42|| iti||



tataḥ sudhanaḥ kumāro manoharopadiṣṭena vidhinā saṃprasthitaḥ| anupūrveṇa parvatanadīguhāprapātādīni bhaiṣajyamantrāgadaprayogeṇa vinirjitya drumasya kinnararājasya bhavanasamīpaṃ gataḥ| kumāro'paśyannagaramadūraṃ śrīmadudyānopaśobhitaṃ nānāpuṣpaphalopetaṃ nānāvihagasevitaṃ taḍāgadīrdhikāvāpīkinnaraiḥ samupāvṛtam| kinnarīstatra cāpaśyat pānīyārthamupagatāḥ| tatastāḥ sudhanakumāreṇābhihitāḥ-kimanena bahunā pānīyena kriyata iti ? tāḥ kathayanti-astidrumasya kinnararājasya duhitā manoharā nāma| sā manuṣyahastagatā babhūva| tasyāḥ sa manuṣyagandho naśyati| sudhanaḥ kumāraḥ pṛcchati-kimete ghaṭāḥ samastāḥ sarve tasyā upari nipātyante, āhosvidanupūrveṇeti ? tāḥ kathayanti-anupūrvyā| sa saṃlakṣayati-śobhano'yamupāyaḥ| imāmaṅgulimudrāmekasmin ghaṭe prakṣipāmīti| tenaikasyāḥ kinnaryā ghaṭe'nālakṣitaṃ prakṣiptā| sā ca kinnarī abhihitā-anena tvayā ghaṭena manoharā tatprathamataraṃ snāpayitavyā| sā saṃlakṣayati-nūnamatra kāryeṇa bhavitavyam| tatastayāsau ghaṭaḥ prathamataraṃ manoharāyā mūrdhni nipātito yāvadaṅgulimudrā utsaṅge nipatitā| sā manoharayā pratyabhijñāyā| tataḥ kinnarīṃ pṛcchatimā tatra kaścinmanuṣyo'bhyāgataḥ ? sā āha- abhyāgataḥ| gaccha, enaṃ pracchannaṃ praveśaya| tayā praveśitaḥ, sugupte pradeśe sthāpitaḥ| tato manoharā pituḥ pādayornipatya kathayati-tāta, yadyasau sudhanaḥ kumāra āgacchet, yenāhaṃ hṛtā, tasya tvaṃ kiṃ kuryāḥ ? sa kathayati- tamahaṃ khaṇḍaśataṃ kṛtvā catasṛṣu dikṣu kṣipeyam| manuṣyo'sau, kiṃ teneti| manoharā kathayati-tāta, manuṣyabhūtasya kuta ihāgamanam ? ahamevaṃ bravīmīti| tato drumasya kinnararājasya paryavasthāno vigataḥ| tato vigataparyavasthānaḥ kathayati-yadyasau kumāra āgacchet, tasyāhaṃ tvāṃ sarvālaṃkāravibhūṣitāṃ prabhūtacitropakaraṇaiḥ kinnarīsahasraparivṛtāṃ bhāryārthaṃ dadyāmiti| tato manoharayā hṛṣṭatuṣṭapramuditayā sudhanaḥ kumāro divyālaṃkāravibhūṣito drumasya kinnararājasyopadarśitaḥ| tato drumaḥ kinararājaḥ sudhanaṃ kumāraṃ dadarśa abhirūpaṃ darśanīyaṃ prāsādikaṃ paramayā śubhavarṇapuṣkalatayā samanvāgatam| dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ paraṃ vismayamupagataḥ| tatastasya jijñāsāṃ kartukāmena sauvarṇāḥ stambhā ucchritāḥ, sapta tālāḥ, sapta bheryaḥ, sapta sūkarāḥ| āha ca-



tvayā kāntyā jitāstāvadete kinnaradārakāḥ|

saṃdarśitaprabhāvastu divyasaṃbandhamarhasi|| 43||



atyāyataṃ śaravaṇaṃ kṛtvoddhhṛtya śaraṃ kṣaṇāt|

vyuptamanyūnamuccitya punardehi tilāḍhakam|| 44||



saṃdarśaya dhanurvede dṛḍhalakṣādikauśalam|

tataḥ kīrtipatākeyaṃ tavāyattā manoharā|| 45||



sudhanakumāro bodhisattvaḥ| kuśalāśca bhavanti bodhisattvāsteṣu teṣu śilpasthānakarmasthāneṣu| devatāścaiṣāmautsukyamāpatsyante avighnabhāvāya| tato bodhisattvo nṛttagītavīṇāpaṇavasughoṣakavallarīmṛdaṅgādinānāvidhena daivatopasaṃhṛtena vāditraviśeṣeṇa samantādāpūryamāṇo'nekaiḥ kinnarasahasraiḥ parivṛtaḥ|



śatakratusamādiṣṭairyakṣaiḥ sūkararūpibhiḥ|

utpāṭite śaravane same vyuptaṃ tilāḍhakam||46||



ekīkṛtaṃ samuccitya śakrasṛṣṭaiḥ pipīlakaiḥ|

kumāraḥ kinnarendrāya vismitāya nyavedayat||47||



nīlotpaladalābhenāsinā gṛhītena paśyato drumasya kinnararājasya sauvarṇastambhasamīpaṃ gatvā tān stambhān kadalīcchedena khaṇḍakhaṇḍaṃ chettumārabdhaḥ| tatastān tilaśo'vakīrya sapta tālān sapta bherīḥ sapta ca sūkarān bāṇena vidhya sumeruvadakampyo'vasthitaḥ| tato gaganatalasthābhirdevatābhiśca kinnaraśatasahasrairhāhākārakilikilāprakṣveḍoccairnādo muktaḥ, yaṃ dṛṣṭvā ca kinnararājaḥ paraṃ vismayamupagataḥ| tataḥ kinnarīsahasrasya manoharāsamānarūpasya madhye manoharāṃ sthāpayitvā sudhanaḥ kumāro'bhihitaḥ - ehi kumāra, pratyabhijānāsi manoharāmiti ? tataḥ sudhanaḥ kumārastāṃ pratyabhijñāya gāthābhigītenoktavān-



yathā drumasya duhitā mameha tvaṃ manoharā|

śīghrametena satyena padaṃ vraja manohare||48||



tataḥ sā drutapadamabhikrāntā| kinnarāḥ kathayanti- deva, ayaṃ sudhanaḥ kumāro balavīryaparākramasamanvito manoharāyāḥ pratirūpaḥ| kimarthaṃ vipralabhya ? dīyatāmasya manohareti| tato drumaḥ kinnararājaḥ kinnaragaṇena saṃvarṇitaḥ sudhanaṃ kinnarābhimatena mahatā satkāreṇa puraskṛtya manoharāṃ divyālaṃkāravibhūṣitāṃ vāmena pāṇinā gṛhītvā dakṣiṇena sauvarṇabhṛṅgāraṃ sudhanaṃ kumāramabhihitaḥ-kumāra, eṣa te manoharā kinnarīparivṛtā bhāryārthāya dattā| aparicitā mānuṣāḥ, yathaināṃ na parityakṣasīti| paraṃ tāteti sudhanaḥ kumāro drumasya kinnararājasya pratiśrutya kinnarabhavanastho manoharayā sārdhaṃ niṣpuruṣeṇa tūryeṇa krīḍate ramate paricārayati| so'pareṇa samayena svadeśamanusmṛtya mātāpitṛviyogajena duḥkhenātyāhato manoharāyā nivedayati-mātāpitṛviyogajaṃ me duḥkhaṃ bādhata iti| tato manoharayā eṣa vṛttānto vistareṇa piturniveditaḥ| sa kathayati- gaccha kumāreṇa sārdham| apakrāntayā te bhavitavyam| vipralambhakā manuṣyāḥ| tato drumeṇa kinnararājena prabhūtaṃ maṇimuktāsuvarṇādīn dattvā anupreṣitaḥ| sa manoharayā sārdhamuparivihāyasā kinnarakhagapathena saṃprasthitaḥ| anupūrveṇa hastināpuranagaramanuprāptaḥ| tato hastināpuraṃ nagaraṃ nānāmanohareṇa surabhinā gandhaviśeṣeṇa sarvā digāmeditam| śrutvā dhanena rājñā ānandabheryastāḍitāḥ, sarvaṃ ca tannagaramapagatapāṣāṇaśarkarakaṭhallaṃ kāritam| candanavāriṣiktamāmuktapaṭṭadāmakalāpasamucchritadhvajapatākaṃ surabhidhūpaghaṭikopanibaddhaṃ nānāpuṣpāvakīrṇaramaṇīyam| tataḥ kumāro'nekanaravarasahasraparivṛto manoharayā sārdhaṃ hastināpuraṃ nagaraṃ praviṣṭaḥ| tato mārgaśramaṃ prativinodya vividhāni ratnānyādāya pituḥ sakāśamupasaṃkrāntaḥ| pitrā kaṇṭhe pariṣvaktaḥ| pāśve rājāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ| kinnaranagaragamanāgamanaṃ ca vistareṇa samākhyātam| tato dhanena rājñā atibalavīryaparākrama iti viditvā rājyābhiṣekeṇābhiṣiktaḥ| sudhanaḥ kumāraḥ saṃlakṣayati-yanmama manoharayā sārdhaṃ samāgamaḥ saṃvṛtto rājyābhiṣekaścānuprāptaḥ, tatpūrvakṛtahetuviśeṣāt| yannvahamidānīṃ dānāni dadyām, puṇyāni kuryāmiti| tena hastināpure nagare dvādaśa varṣāṇi nirargaḍo yajña iṣṭaḥ||



syātkhalu te mahārāja anyaḥ sa tena kālena samayena sudhanaḥ kumāro veti ? na khalvevaṃ draṣṭavyam| api tvahameva tena kālena tena samayena bodhisattvacaryāyāṃ vartamānaḥ sudhano nāma rājā babhūva| yanmayā manoharānimittaṃ balavīryaparākramo darśitaḥ, dvādaśa varṣāṇi nirargaḍo yajña iṣṭaḥ, na tena mayā anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhiradhigatā, kiṃ tu taddānaṃ tacca vīryamanuttarāyāḥ samyaksaṃbodherhetumātrakaṃ pratyayamātrakaṃ saṃbhāramātrakam||



ityavocadbhagavān| āttamanasaste ca sarve lokā bhagavato bhāṣitamabhyanandan||



iti sudhanakumārāvadānaṃ samāptam||
