yo'sau svamāṃsatanubhiryajanāni kṛtvā

tāvacciraṃ karuṇayā jagato hitāya|

tasya śramasya saphalīkaraṇāya santaḥ

saṃmārjitaṃ śṛṇuta sāṃpratabhāṣyamāṇam||1||



evaṃ mayā śrutam| ekasmin samaye bhagavāna śrāvastyāṃ viharatīti sūtraṃ vaktavyam| atra tāvadbhagavattathāgatavadanāmbhodharavivarapratyudgatavacanasaratsaliladhārāsaṃpātāpanītarāgadveṣa-mohamadamānamāyāśāṭhyapaṅkapaṭalānāṃ śabdanyāyāditarkaśāstrārthāvalokanotpannaprajñāpradīpaprotsāritakuśāstradarśanāndhakārāṇāṃ saṃsāratṛṣṇāchedipravarasaddharmapayaḥpānaśauṇḍānāṃ gurūṇāṃ saṃnidhau sarvāvavādakaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ śakrabrahmeśānayamavaruṇakuberavāsasomādityādibhirapyapratihataśāsanaṃ kandarpadarpāpamardanaśūraṃ mahātmānamatimaharddhikaṃ sthaviropaguptamārabhya kāṃcideva vibuddhajanamanaḥ-prasādakarīṃ dharmyāṃ kathāṃ samanusmariṣyāmaḥ| tatra tāvadgurubhiravahitaśrotrairbhavitavyam||



evamanuśrūyate - yadā bhagavān parinirvāṇakālasamaye palālanāgaṃ vinīyaṃ kumbhakārīṃ caṇḍālīṃ gopālīṃ ca, teṣāṃ mathurāmanuprāptaḥ, tatra bhagavānāyuṣmantamānandamāmantrayate sma-asyāmānanda mathurāyāṃ mama varṣaśataparinirvṛtasya gupto nāma gāndhiko bhaviṣyati| tasya putro bhaviṣyatyupagupto nāma alakṣaṇako buddho yo mama varṣaśataparinirvṛtasya buddhakāryaṃ bhavi(kari)ṣyati| tasyāvavādena bahavo bhikṣavaḥ sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkariṣyanti| te'ṣṭādaśahastāmāyāmena dvādaśahastāṃ vistāreṇa caturaṅgalamātrābhiḥ śaṇakābhiḥ pūjayiṣyanti| eṣo'gro me ānanda śrāvakāṇāṃ bhaviṣyatyavavādakānāṃ yaduta upagupto bhikṣuḥ| paśyasi tvamānanda dūrata eva nīlanīlāmbararājim ? evaṃ bhadanta| eṣa ānanda rurumuṇḍo nāma parvataḥ| atra varṣaśataparinirvṛtasya tathāgatasya śāṇakavāsī nāma bhikṣurbhaviṣyati| so'tra rurumuṇḍaparvate vihāraṃ pratiṣṭhāpayiṣyati, upaguptaṃ ca pravrājayiṣyati| mathurāyāmānanda naṭo bhaṭaśca dvau bhrātarau śreṣṭhinau bhaviṣyataḥ| tau rurumuṇḍaparvate vihāraṃ pratiṣṭhāpayiṣyataḥ| tasya naṭabhaṭiketi saṃjñā bhaviṣyati| etadagraṃ me ānanda bhaviṣyati śamathānukūlānāṃ śayyāsanānāṃ yadidaṃ naṭabhaṭikāraṇyāyatanam| athāyuṣmānānando bhagavantamidamavocat-āścaryaṃ bhadanta yadīdṛśamāyuṣmānupagupto bahujanahitaṃ kariṣyati| bhagavānāha-na ānanda etarhi, yathā atīte'pyadhvani tena vinipatitaśarīreṇāpyatraiva urumuṇḍaparvate trayaḥ pārśvāḥ| ekatra pradeśe pañca partyekabuddhaśatāni prativasanti| dvitīye pañcaṛṣiśatāni| tṛtīye pañcamarkaṭaśatāni| tatra yo'sau pañcānāṃ markaṭaśatānāṃ yūthapatiḥ, sa taṃ yūthamapahāya tatra pārśve pañca pratyekabuddhaśatāni prativasanti, tatra gataḥ| tasya tān pratyekabuddhān dṛṣṭvā prasādo jātaḥ| sa teṣāṃ pratyekabuddhānāṃ śīrṇaparṇāni mūlaphalāni copanāmayati| yadā ca te paryaṅkenopaviṣṭā bhavanti, sa vṛddhānte praṇāmaṃ kṛtvā yāvannavāntaṃ gatvā paryaṅkenopaviśati, yāvat te pratyekabuddhāḥ parinirvṛtāḥ| sa teṣāṃ śīrṇaparṇāni mūlaphalāni copanāmayati, te na pratigṛhṇanti| sa teṣāṃ cīvarakarṇikānyākarṣayati, pādau gṛhṇāti| yāvat sa markaṭaścintayati-niyatamete kālagatā bhaviṣyanti| tataḥ sa markaṭaḥ śocitvā paridevitvā ca dvitīyaṃ pārśvaṃ gato yatra pañca ṛṣiśatāni prativasanti| te ca ṛṣayaḥ kecit kaṇṭakāpāśrayāḥ kecidbhasmāpāśrayāḥ, kecidūrdhvahastāḥ, kecit pañcātapāvasthitāḥ| sa teṣāṃ teṣāmīryāpathān vikopayitumārabdhaḥ| ye kaṇṭakāpāśrayāsteṣāṃ kaṇṭakānuddharati| bhasmāpāśrayāṇāṃ bhasma vidhunoti| ūrdhvahastānāmadho hastaṃ pātayati| pañcātapāvasthitānāmagnimavakirati| yadā ca tairīryāpatho vikopito bhavati, tadā sa teṣāmagrataḥ paryaṅkaṃ baghnāti| yāvat tairṛṣibhirācāryāya niveditam| tenāpi coktam - paryaṅkena tāvannīṣīdatha, yāvat tāni pañca ṛṣiśatāni paryaṅkenopaviṣṭāṇi| te'nācāryakā anupadeśakāḥ saptatriṃśadbodhipakṣān dharmānāmukhīkṛtya pratyekāṃ bodhiṃ sākṣātkṛtavantaḥ| atha teṣāṃ pratyekabuddhānāmetadabhavat - yat kiṃcidasyābhiḥ śreyo'vāptam, tatsarvamimaṃ markaṭamāgamya| tairyāvat sa markaṭaḥ phalamūlaiḥ paripālitaḥ, kālagatasya ca taccharīraṃ gandhakāṣṭhairdhmāpitam||



tatkiṃ manyase ānanda ? yo'sau pañcānāṃ markaṭaśatānāṃ yūthapatiḥ, sa eṣa upaguptaḥ| tadāpi tena vinipatitaśarīreṇāpyatraivorumuṇḍe parvate bahujanahitaṃ kṛtam| anāgate'pyadhvani varṣaśataparinirvṛtasya mama atraivorumuṇḍe parvate bahujanahitaṃ kariṣyati| tacca yathaivaṃ tathopadarśayiṣyāmaḥ-yadā sthavireṇa śāṇakavāsinā urumuṇḍe parvate vihāraḥ pratiṣṭhāpitaḥ, samanvāharatikimasau gāndhika utpannaḥ, athādyāpi notpadyate iti ? paśyatyutpannam| sa yāvat samanvāharati-yo'sau tasya putra upagupto nāmnā alakṣaṇako buddho nirdiṣṭaḥ, yo mama varṣaśataparinirvṛtasya buddhakāryaṃ kariṣyatīti, kimasau utpanno'dyāpi notpadyate? tena yāvadupāyena gupto gandhiko bhagavacchāsane'bhiprasāditaḥ| sa yadā abhiprasannastadā sthaviraḥ saṃbahulairbhikṣubhiḥ sārdhamekadivasaṃ tasya gṛhaṃ praviṣṭaḥ| aparasminnahanyātmadvitīyaḥ| anyasminnahanyekākī| yāvadgupto gandhikaḥ sthaviraṃ śāṇakavāsinamekākinaṃ dṛṣṭvā kathayati-na khalu āryasya kaścit paścācchramaṇaḥ ? sthavira uvāca-jarādharmāṇāṃ kuto'smākaṃ paścācchramaṇo bhavati ? yadi kecit śraddhāpurogena pravrajanti, te'smākaṃ paścācchramaṇā bhavanti| gupto gāndhika uvāca-ārya, ahaṃ tāvadgṛhavāse parigṛddho viṣayābhirataśca| na mayā śakyaṃ pravrajitum| api tu yo'smākaṃ putro bhavati, taṃ vayamāryasya paścācchramaṇaṃ dāsyāmaḥ| sthavira uvāca-vatsa, evamastu| api tu dṛḍhapratijñāṃ smarethāstvamiti| yāvadguptasya gāndhikasya putro jātaḥ| tasyāśvagupta iti nāmadheyaṃ kṛtam| sa yadā mahān saṃvṛttastadā sthaviraḥ śāṇakavāsī guptaṃ gāndhikamadhigamyovācavatsa, tvayā pratijñātam-yo'smākaṃ putro bhaviṣyati, taṃ vayamāryasya paścācchramaṇaṃ dāsyāmaḥ| anujānīhi, pravrājayiṣyāmīti| gāndhika uvāca-ārya, ayamasmākamekaputraḥ| marṣaya naḥ| yo'smākaṃ dvitīyaḥ putro bhaviṣyati, taṃ vayamāryasya paścācchramaṇaṃ dāsyāmaḥ| yāvat sthaviraḥ śāṇakavāsī samanvāharati-kimayaṃ sa upaguptaḥ ? paśyati neti| tena sthavireṇābhihitaḥ-evamastu iti| tasya yāvaddvitīyaḥ putro jātaḥ| tasya dhanagupta iti nāma kṛtam| so'pi yadā mahān saṃvṛttaḥ, tadā sthaviraḥ śāṇakavāsī guptaṃ gāndhikamuvāca-vatsa, tvayā pratijñātam-yo'smākaṃ putro bhaviṣyati, taṃ vayamāryasya paścācchramaṇaṃ dāsyāmaḥ| ayaṃ ca te putro jātaḥ| anujānīhi, pravrājayiṣyāmīti| gāndhika uvāca-ārya marṣaya, eko'smākaṃ bahirdhā dravyaṃ saṃśayiṣyati, dvitīyo'ntargṛhe paripālanaṃ katiṣyatīti| api tu yo'smākaṃ tṛtīyaḥ putro bhaviṣyati, sa āryasya dattaḥ| yāvat sthaviraḥ śāṇakavāsī samanvāharati-kimayaṃ saṃ upaguptaḥ ? paśyati neti| tataḥ sthavira uvāca-evamastu iti| yāvadguptasya gāndhikasya tṛtīyaḥ putro jāto'bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādiko'tikrānto mānuṣavarṇamasaṃprāptaśca divyavarṇam| tasya vistareṇa jātau jātimahaṃ kṛtvā upagupta iti nāma kṛtam| so'pi yadā mahān saṃvṛttaḥ, yāvat sthaviraśāṇakavāsī guptaṃ gāndhikamabhigamyovāca-vatsa, tvayā pratījñātam-yo'smākaṃ tṛtīyaḥ putro bhaviṣyati, vayamāryasya dāsyāmaḥ paścācchramaṇārthe| ayaṃ te tṛtīyaḥ putra utpannaḥ| anujānīhi, pravrājayiṣyāmīti| gupto gāndhika uvāca-ārya, samayataḥ| yadā lābho'nucchedo bhaviṣyatīti, tadā anujñāsyāmi| yadā tena samayaḥ kṛtaḥ, tadā māreṇa sarvāvatī mathurā gandhāviṣṭā| te sarve upaguptasakāśāgdanghān krīṇanti| sa prabhūtāni dāsyati| yāvat sthaviraśāṇakavāsī upaguptasakāśaṃ gataḥ| upaguptaśca gandhāpaṇe sthitaḥ| sa dharmeṇa vyavahāraṃ karoti, gandhān vikrīṇīte| sa sthavireṇa śāṇakavāsinā abhihitaḥ-vatsa, kīdṛśāste cittacetasikāḥ pravartante kliṣṭā vā akliṣṭā veti ? upagupta uvāca-ārya, naiva jānāmi kīdṛśāḥ kliṣṭāścittacetasikāḥ, kīdṛśā akliṣṭā iti| sthaviraḥ śāṇakavāsī uvāca-vatsa, yadi kevalaṃ cittaṃ parijñātuṃ na śakyasi, pratipakṣaṃ mocayitum| tena tasya kṛṣṇīkapaṭṭikā dattā pāṇḍurikā ca| yadi kliṣṭaṃ cittamutpadyate, kṛṣṇikāṃ paṭṭikāṃ sthāpaya| athākliṣṭaṃ cittamutpadyate, pāṇḍurāṃ paṭṭikāṃ sthāpaya| śubhāṃ manasi kuru, buddhānusmṛtiṃ ca bhāvayasveti tenāsya vyapadiṣṭam| tasya yāvadārabdhā akliṣṭāścittacetasikāḥ pravartitum, sa dvau bhāgau kṛṣṇikānāṃ sthāpayati, ekaṃ pāṇḍurikāṇām| yāvadardhaṃ kṛṣṇikānāṃ sthāpayati ardhaṃ pāṇḍurikāṇām| yāvat dvau bhāgau pāṇḍurikāṇāṃ sthāpayati, ekaṃ kṛṣṇikānām| yāvadanupūrveṇa sarvāṇyeva śuklāni cittānyutpadyante, sa pāṇḍurikāṇāmeva paṭṭikāṃ sthāpayati| dharmeṇa vyavahāraṃ karoti||



mathurāyāṃ vāsavadattā nāma gaṇikā| tasyā dāsī upaguptasakāśaṃ gatvā gandhān krīṇāti| so vāsavadattayā cocyate-dārike, muṣyate sa gāndhikastvayā| bahūn gandhānānayasīti| dārikovāca-āryaduhite, upagupto gāndhikadārako rūpasaṃpannaścāturyamādhuryasaṃpannaśca dharmeṇa vyavahāraṃ karoti| śrutvā ca vāsavadattāyā upaguptasakāśe sānurāgaṃ cittamutpannam| tayā yāvaddāsī upaguptasakāśaṃ preṣitā-tvatsakāśamāgamiṣyāti| icchāmi tvayā sārdhaṃ ratimanubhavitum| yāvaddāsyā upaguptasya niveditam| upagupta uvāca-akālaste bhagini maddarśanāyeti| vāsavadattā pañcābhiḥ purāṇaśataiḥ paricārayate| tasyā buddhirutpannā-niyataṃ pañca purāṇaśatāni notsahate dātum| tayā yāvaddāsī upaguptasakāśaṃ preṣitā - na mamāryaputrasakāśāt kārṣāpaṇenāpi prayojanam| kevalamāryaputreṇa saha ratimanubhaveyam| dāsyā tathā niveditam| upagupta uvāca-akālaste bhagini maddarśanāyeti| yāvadanyataraḥ śreṣṭhiputro vāsavadattāyāḥ sakāśaṃ praviṣṭaḥ| anyataraśca sārthavāha uttarāpathāt pañcaśatamaśvapaṇyaṃ gṛhītvā mathurāmanuprāptaḥ| tenābhihitam-katarā veśyā sarvapradhānā ? tena śrutam-vāsavadatteti| sa pañca purāṇaśatāni gṛhītvā bahūṃśca prābhṛtān vāsavadattāyāḥ sakāśamabhigataḥ| tato vāsavadattayā lobhākṛṣṭena taṃ śreṣṭhiputraṃ praghātayitvā'vaskare prakṣipya sārthavāhena saha ratimanubhūtā| yāvat sa śreṣṭhiputro bandhuibhiravaskarāduddhṛtya (taḥ)| rājño niveditam| tato rājñā abhihitam-gacchantu bhavantaḥ, vāsavadattāṃ hastapādau karṇanāsaṃ ca chittvā śmaśāne chorayantu| yāvat tairvāsavadattā hastapādau karṇanāsaṃ ca chitvā śmaśāne choritā| āvadupaguptena śrutam-vāsavadatā hastapādau karṇanāsaṃ ca chittvā śmaśāne choritā| tasya buddhirutpannā-pūrvaṃ tayā mama viṣayanimittaṃ darśanamākāṅkṣitam| idānīṃ tu tasyā hastapādau karṇanāsaṃ ca vikartitau, idānīṃ tu tasyā darśanakāla iti| āha ca -



yadā praśastāmbarasaṃvṛtāṅgī

abhūdvicitrābharaṇaurvibhūṣitā|

mokṣārthināṃ janmaparāṅmukhānāṃ

śreyastadāsyāstu na darśanaṃ syāt||2||



idānīṃ tu tasyāḥ kālo'yaṃ draṣṭuṃ gatamānarāgaharṣāyāḥ|

niśitāsivikṣatāyāḥ svabhāvaniyatasya rūpasya||3||



yāvadekena dārakenopasthāyakena chatramādāya praśānteneryāpathena śmaśānamanuprāptaḥ| tasyāśca preṣikā pūrvaguṇānurāgāt samīpe'vasthitā kākādīn nivārayati| tayā ca vāsavadattāyā niveditam - āryaduhitaḥ, yasya tvayā ahaṃ sakāśaṃ punaḥ punaranupreṣitā, ayaṃ sa upagupto'bhyāgataḥ| niyatameṣa kāmarāgārta āgato bhaviṣyat| śrutvā ca vāsavadattā kathayati-



pranaṣṭaśobhāṃ duḥkhārtāṃ bhūmau rudhirapiñcarām|

māṃ dṛṣṭvā kathametasya kāmarāgo bhaviṣyati||4||



tataḥ preṣikāmuvāca-yau hastapādau karṇanāsaṃ ca maccharīrādvikartitau, tau śleṣayeti| tayā yāvat śleṣayitvā paṭṭakena pracchāditā| upaguptaścāgatya vāsavadattāyā agrataḥ sthitaḥ| tato vāsavadattā upaguptamagrataḥ sthitaṃ dṛṣṭvā kathayati- āryaputra, yadā maccharīraṃ svasthabhūtaṃ viṣayaratyanukūlam, tadā mayā āryaputrasya punaḥ punardūtī visarjitā| āryaputreṇābhihitam- akālaste bhagini mama darśanāyeti| idānīṃ mama hastapādau karṇanāsau ca vikartitau, svarudhirakardama evāvasthitā| idānīṃ kimāgato'si ? āha ca -



idaṃ yadā paṅkajagarbhakomalaṃ

mahārhavastrābharaṇairvibhūṣitam|

babhūva gātraṃ mama darśanakṣamaṃ

tadā na dṛṣṭo'si mayālpabhājñayā||5||



etarhi kiṃ draṣṭumihāgato'si

yadā śarīraṃ mama darśanākṣamam|

nivṛttalīlāratiharṣavismayaṃ

bhayāvahaṃ śoṇitapaṅkalepanam||6||



upagupta uvāca-

nāhaṃ bhagini kāmārtaḥ saṃnidhāvāgatastava|

kāmānāmaśubhānāṃ tu svabhāvaṃ draṣṭumāgataḥ||7||



pracchāditā vastravibhūṣaṇādyai-

rbāhyairvicitrairmadanānukūlaiḥ|

nirīkṣyamāṇā api yatnavadbhi-

rnāpyatra dṛṣṭāsi bhavedyathāvat||8||



idaṃ tu rūpaṃ tava dṛśyametat

sthitaṃ svabhāve racanādviyuktam|

te'paṇḍitāste ca vigarhaṇīyā

ye prākṛte'smin kuṇape ramante||9||



rvacāvanaddhe rudhirāvasakte

carmāvṛte māṃsaghanāvalipte|

śirāsahasraiśca vṛte samantāt

ko nāma rajyeta itaḥ śarīre||10||



api ca bhagini|

bahirbhadrāṇi rūpāṇi dṛṣṭvā bālo'bhirajyate|

abhyantaraviduṣṭāni jñātvā dhīro virajyate||11||



avakṛṣṭāvakṛṣṭasya kuṇapasya hyamedhyatā|

medhyāḥ kāmopasaṃhārāḥ kāminaḥ śubhasaṃjñinaḥ||12||



iha hi -

daurgandhyaṃ prativāryate bahuvidhairgandhairamedhyākarai-

rvaikṛtyaṃ bahirādhriyeta vividhairvastrādibhirbhūṣaṇaiḥ|

svedakledamalādayo'pyaśucayastānnirharatyambhasā

yenāmedhyakaraṅkametadaśubhaṃ kāmātmabhiḥ sevyate||13||



saṃbuddhasya tu ye vacaḥ suvacasaḥ śṛṇvanti kurvantyapi

te kāmān śramaśokaduḥkhajananān sadbhiḥ sadā garhitān|

tyaktvā kāmanimittamuktamanasaḥ śānte vane nirgatāḥ

pāraṃ yānti bhavārṇavasya mahataḥ saṃśritya mārgaplavam||14||



śrutvā vāsavadattā saṃsārādudvignā| buddhaguṇānusmaraṇāccāvarjitahṛdayovāca-

evametattathā sarvaṃ yathā vadasi paṇḍita|

me tvāṃ sādhuṃ samāsādya buddhasya vacanaṃ śrutam|| 15||



yāvadupaguptena vāsavadattāyā anupūrvikāṃ kathāṃ kṛtvā satyāni saṃprakāśitāni| upaguptaśca vāsavadattāyāḥ śarīrasvabhāvamavagamya kāmadhātuvairāgyaṃ gataḥ| tenātmīyayā dharmadeśanayā sahasatyābhisamayādanāgāmiphalaṃ vāsavadattayā ca srotāpattiphalaṃ prāptam| tato vāsavadattā dṛṣṭasatyā upaguptaṃ saṃrāgayantyuvāca-



tavānubhāvātpihitaḥ sughoro

hyapāyamārgo bahudoṣayuktaḥ|

apāvṛtā svargagatiḥ supuṇyā

nirvāṇamārgaśca mayopalabdhaḥ|| 16||



api ca| eṣāhaṃ taṃ bhagavantaṃ tathāgatamarhantaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi dharmaṃ ca bhikṣusaṃghaṃ cetyāha-



eṣā vrajāmi śaraṇaṃ vibuddhanavakamalavimaladhavalanetram|

tamamarabudhajanamahitaṃ jinaṃ virāgaṃ ca saṃghaṃ ca||17|| iti||



yāvadupagupto bāsavadattāṃ dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya prakrāntaḥ| aciraprakrānte copagupte vāsavadattā kālagatā deveṣūpapannā| devataiśca mathurāyāmārocitam-vāsavadattayā upaguptasakāśāddharmadeśanāṃ śrutvā āryasatyāni dṛṣṭāni, deveṣūpapanneti| śrutvā ca mathurāvāstavyena janakāyena vāsavadattāyāḥ śarīre pūjā kṛtā||



yāvat sthaviraḥ śāṇakavāsī guptaṃ gāndhikamabhigamyovāca-anujānīhi upaguptaṃ pravrājayiṣyāmīti| gupto gāndhika uvāca-ārya, eṣa samayaḥ| yadā na lābho na cchedo bhaviṣyati, tadā anujñāsyāmīti| yāvat sthaviraśāṇakavāsinā ṛddhyā tathā adhiṣṭhitaṃ yathā na lābho na cchedaḥ| tato gupto gāndhiko gaṇayati, tulayati, māpayati, paśyati-na lābho na cchedaḥ| tataḥ sthaviraḥ śāṇakavāsī guptaṃ gāndhikamuvāca- ayaṃ hi bhagavatā buddhena nirdiṣṭaḥ mama varṣaśataparinirvṛtasya buddhakāryaṃ kariṣyatīti| anujānīhi, pravrājayiṣyāmīti| yāvadguptena gāndhikenābhyanujñātaḥ| tataḥ sthavireṇa śāṇakavāsinā upagupto naṭabhaṭīkāraṇyāyatanaṃ nītaḥ, upasaṃpāditaśca| jñapticarturthaṃ ca karma vyavasitam| upaguptena ca sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam| tataḥ sthavireṇa śāṇakavāsinābhihitam-vatsa upagupta, tvaṃ bhagavatā nirdiṣṭo varṣaśataparinirvṛtasya mamopagupto nāma bhikṣurbhiviṣyatyalakṣaṇako buddhaḥ, yo mama varṣaśataparinirvṛtasya buddhakāryaṃ kariṣyatīti| eṣo'gro me ānanda śrāvakāṇāmavavādakānāṃ yaduta upagupto bhikṣuḥ| idānīṃ vatsa śāsanahitaṃ kuruṣveti| upagupta uvāca-evamastu iti| tataḥ sa dharmaśravaṇe'dhīṣṭaḥ| mathurāyāṃ ca śabdo visṛtaḥ- upagupto nāmālakṣaṇako buddho'dya dharmaṃ deśayiṣyatīti| śrutvā cānekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi nirgatāni| yāvat sthaviropaguptaḥ samāpadyāvalokayati-kathaṃ tathāgatasya pariṣanniṣaṇṇā ? paśyati cārdhacandrākāreṇa parṣadabasthitā| yāvadavalokayati-kathaṃ tathāgatena dharmadeśanā kṛtā ? paśyati pūrvakālakaraṇīyāṃ kathāṃ kṛtvā satyasaṃprakāśanā kṛtā| so'pi pūrvakālakaraṇīyāṃ kathāṃ kṛtvā satyasaṃprakāśanāṃ kartumārabdhaḥ| māreṇa ca tasyāṃ parṣadi muktāhāravarṣamutsṛṣṭam, vaineyānāṃ manāṃsi vyākulīkṛtāni, ekenāpi satyadarśanaṃ na kṛtam| yāvat sthaviropagupto vyavalokayati-kenāyaṃ vyākṣeyaḥ kṛtaḥ ? paśyati māreṇa| yāvaddvitīye divase bahutarako janakāyo nirgataḥ| upagupto dharmaṃ deśayati, muktāhāraṃ ca varṣopavarṣitamiti| yāvat dvitīye'pi divase sthaviropaguptena pūrvakālakaraṇīyāṃ kathāṃ kṛtvā satyasaṃprakāśanāyāmārabdhāyāṃ māreṇa cāsyāṃ parṣadi suvarṇavarṣamutsṛṣṭam, vaineyānāṃ manāṃsi saṃkṣobhitāni, ekenāpi satyadarśanaṃ na kṛtam| yāvat sthaviropagupto vyavalokayati-kenāyaṃ vyākṣepaḥ kṛtaḥ ? paśyati māreṇa pāpīyaseti| yāvat tṛtīye divase bahuratako janakāyo nirgataḥ| upagupto dharmaṃ deśayati, muktāvarṣaṃ suvarṇavarṣaṃ ca patatīti| yāvat tṛtīye'pi divase sthaviropaguptaḥ pūrvakālakaraṇīyāṃ kathāṃ kṛtvā satyā nyārabdhaḥ saṃprakāśayitum| māreṇa ca nātidūre nāṭakamārabdham| divyāni ca vādyāni saṃpravāditāni, divyāśvāpsaraso nāṭayituṃ pravṛttāḥ| yāvadvītarāgo janakāyo divyāni rūpāṇi dṛṣṭvā divyāṃśca śabdān śrutvā māreṇākṛṣṭaḥ| ato māreṇopaguptasya parṣadākṛṣṭā| prītimanasā māreṇa sthaviropaguptasya śirasi mālā baddhā| yāvat sthaviropaguptaḥ samanvāharitumārabdhaḥ-ko'yam ? paśyati māraḥ| tasya buddhirutpannā-ayaṃ māro bhagavacchāsane mahāntaṃ vyākṣepaṃ karoti| kimarthamayaṃ bhagavatā na vinītaḥ ? paśyati mamāyaṃ vineyaḥ| tasya ca vinayāt sattvānugrahādahaṃ bhagavatā alakṣaṇako buddho nirdiṣṭaḥ| yāvat sthaviropaguptaḥ samanvāharatikimasya vinayakāla upasthita āhosvinneti ? paśyati-vinayakāla upasthitaḥ | tataḥ sthaviropaguptena trayaḥ kuṇapā gṛhītāḥ -ahikuṇapaṃ kurkurakuṇapaṃ manuṣyakuṇapaṃ ca| ṛddhyā ca puṣpamālāmabhinirmāya mārasakāśamabhigataḥ| dṛṣṭvā ca mārasya prītirutpannā-upagupto'pi mayā ākṛṣṭa iti| tato māreṇa svaśarīramupanāmitam| sthaviropaguptaḥ svayameva badhnāti| tataḥ sthaviropaguptenāhikuṇapaṃ mārasya śirasi baddham, kurkurakuṇapaṃ grīvāyām, karṇāvasaktaṃ manuṣyakuṇapaṃ ca| tataḥ samālabhyovāca-



bhikṣujanapratikūlā mālā baddhā yathaiva me bhavatā|

kāmijanapratikūlaṃ tava kuṇapamidaṃ mayā baddham||18||



yatte balaṃ bhavati tatpratidarśayasva

buddhātmajena hi sahādya samāgato'si|

udvṛttamapyanilabhinnataraṃgavakraṃ

vyāvartane malayakukṣiṣu sāgarāmbhaḥ||19||



atha mārastaṃ kuṇapamapanetumārabdhaḥ| paramapi ca svayamanupraviśya pipīlika ivādrirājamapanayituṃ na śaśāka| asamartho vaihāyasamutpatyovāca-

yadi moktuṃ na śakyāmi kaṇṭhāt śvakuṇapaṃ svayam|

anye devāpi mokṣyante matto'bhyadhikatejasaḥ||20||



sthavira uvāca-

brahmāṇaṃ śaraṇaṃ śatakratuṃ vā

dīptaṃ vā praviśa hutāśamarṇavaṃ vā|

na kledaṃ na ca pariśoṣaṇaṃ na bhedaṃ

kaṇṭhasthaṃ kuṇapamidaṃ tu yāsyatīha||21||



samahendrarudropendradraviṇeśvarayamavaruṇakuberavāsavādīnāṃ devānāmabhigamya akṛtārtha eva brahmāṇamabhigataḥ| tena coktaḥ- marṣaya vatsa,



śiṣyeṇa daśabalasya svayamṛddhyā kṛtāntamaryādā|

kastāṃ bhettuṃ śakto velāṃ varūṇālayasyeva||22||



api padmanālasūtrairbaddhvā himavantamuddharet kaścit|

na tu tava kaṇṭhāsaktaṃ śvakuṇapamidamuddhareyamaham||23||



kāmaṃ mamāpi mahadasti balaṃ tathāpi

nāhaṃ tathāgatasutasya balena tulyaḥ|

tejasvināṃ na khalu na jvalane'sti kiṃ tu

nāsau dyutirhutavahe ravimaṇḍale yā||24||



māro'bravīt-kimidānīmājñāpasayi ? kaṃ śaraṇaṃ vrajāmīti ? brahmābravīt-



śrīghraṃ tamevae śaraṇaṃ vrajaṃ yaṃ sametya

bhraṣṭastvaṃ ṛddhivibhavādyaśasaḥ sukhācca|

bhraṣṭo hi yaḥ kṣititale bhavatīha jantu-

ruttiṣṭhati kṣitimaāvavalambya bhūyaḥ|| 25||



atha mārastathāgataśiṣyasāmarthyamupalabhya cintayāmāsa-

brahmaṇā pūjyate yasya śiṣyāṇāmapi śāsanam|

tasya buddhasya sāmarthyaṃ pramātuṃ ko nu śaknuyāt||26||



kartukāmo'bhaviṣyatkāṃ śiṣṭiṃ sa mama suvrataḥ|

yāṃ nākariṣyatkṣāntyā tu tenāhamanurakṣitaḥ||27||



kiṃ bahunā ?

adyāvaimi munermahākaruṇatāṃ tasyātimaitryātmanaḥ

sarvopadravavipramuktamanasaścāmīkarādridyuteḥ|

mohāndhena hi tatra tatra sa mayā taistairnayaiḥ khedita-

stenāhaṃ ca tathāpi nāma balinā naivāpriyaṃ śrāvitaḥ||28||



atha kāmadhātvadhipatirmāraḥ nāstyanyā gatiranyatropaguptakādeveti jñātvā sarvamutsṛjya sthaviropaguptasamīpamupetya pādayornipatyovāca-bhadanta, kimaviditametadbhādantasya yathā bodhimūlamupādāya mayā bhagavato vipriyaśatāni kṛtāni ? kutaḥ ?



śālāyāṃ brāhmaṇagrāme māmāsādya sa gautamaḥ|

bhaktacchedamapi prāpya nākārṣīnmama vipriyam||29||



gaurbhūtvā sarpavat sthitvā kṛtvā śākaṭikākṛtim|

sa mayāyāsito nātho na cāhaṃ tena hiṃsitaḥ||30||



tvayā punarahaṃ vīra tyaktvā (tu) sahajāṃ dayām|

sadevāsuramadhyeṣu lokeṣvadya viḍambitaḥ||31||



sthaviro'bravīt-pāpīyan, kathamaparīkṣyaiva tathāgatamāhātmyeṣu śrāvakamupasaṃharasi-

kiṃ sarṣapeṇa samatāṃ nayasīhaṃ meruṃ

khadyotakena raviṃ maṇḍalinā samudram|

anyā hi sā daśabalasya kṛpā prajāsu

na śrāvakasya hi mahākaruṇāsti saumya||32||



api ca-



yadarthena bhagavatā sāparādho'pi marṣitaḥ|

idaṃ tat kāraṇaṃ sākṣādasmābhirupalakṣitam||33||



māra uvāca-

brūhi brūhi śrīmatastasya bhāvaṃ

saṅgaṃ chettuṃ kṣāntiguptavratasya|

yo'sau mohānnityamāyāsito me

tenāhaṃ ca prekṣito maitryeṇaiva||34||



sthavira uvāca-śṛṇu saumya, tvaṃ hi bhagavatyasakṛdasakṛdavaskhalitaḥ| na ca buddhāvaropitānāmakuśalānāṃ dharmāṇāmanyat prakṣālanamanyatra tathāgataprasādādeva|

tadetatkāraṇaṃ tena paśyatā dīrghadarśinā|

tvaṃ nāpriyamiha proktaḥ priyāṇyeva tu lambhitaḥ||35||



nyāyenānena bhaktistava hṛdi janitā tenāgramatinā

svalpāpi hyatra bhaktirbhavati matimatāṃ nirvāṇaphaladā|

saṃkṣepādyatkṛtaṃ te vṛjinamiha mune mohāndhamanasā

sarvaṃ prakṣālitaṃ tattava hṛdayagataiḥ śraddhāmbuvisaraiḥ||36||



atha māraḥ kadambapuṣpavadāhṛṣṭaromakūpaḥ sarvāṅgena praṇipatyovāca-

sthāne mayā bahuvidhaṃ parikhedito'sau

prāk siddhitaśca bhuvi siddhamanorathena|

sarvaṃ ca marṣitamṛṣipravareṇa tena

putrāparādha iva sānunayena pitrā||37||



sa buddhaprasādāpyāyitamanāḥ suciraṃ buddhaguṇānanusmṛtya sthavirasya pādayornipatyovāca-

anugraho me'dya paraḥ kṛtastvayā

niveśitaṃ yanmayi buddhagauravam|

idaṃ tu kaṇṭhavyavalambi maitryā

maharṣikopābharaṇaṃ visarjaya||38||



sthavira uvāca-samayato vimokṣyāmīti| māra uvāca- kaḥ samaya iti ? sthavira uvāca- adyaprabhṛti bhikṣavo naviheṭhayitavyā iti| māro'bravīt- na viheṭhayiṣye| kamaparamājñāpayasīti ? sthavira uvāca-evaṃ tāvacchāsanakāryaṃ prati mamājñā| svakāryaṃ prati vijñāpayiṣyāmi bhavantam| tato māraḥ sasaṃbhrama uvāca-prasīda sthavira, kimājñāpayasi ? sthaviro'bravīt-svayamavagacchasi-yadahaṃ varṣaśataparinirvṛte bhagavati pravrajitaḥ, taddharmakāyo mayā tasya dṛṣṭaḥ| trailokyanāthasya kāñcanādrinibhastasya na dṛṣṭo rūpakāyo me|



tadanu tvamanugrahamapratima-

miha vidarśaya buddhivigraham|

priyamadhikamato hi nāsti me

daśabalarūpakutūhalo hyaham||39||



māra uvaca-tena hi mamāpi samayaḥ śrūyatām|

sahasā tamihodvīkṣya buddhamepathyadhāriṇam|

na praṇāmastvayā kāryaḥ sarvajñaguṇagauravāt||40||



buddhānusmṛtipeśalena manasā pūjāṃ yadi tvaṃ mayi

svalpāmapyupadarśayiṣyasi vibho dagdho bhaviṣyāmyaham|

kā śaktirmama vītarāgavihitāṃ soḍhuṃ praṇāmakriyāṃ

hastanyāsamivodvahanti na gajasyairaṇḍavṛkṣāṅkurāḥ||41||



sthaviro'pyāha-evamastu| na bhavantaṃ praṇamiṣyāmīti| māro'bravīt-tena hi muhūrtamāgamaya, yāvadahaṃ vanagahanamanupraviśya-



śūraṃ vañcayituṃ purā vyavasitenottaptahemaprabhaṃ

bauddhaṃ rūpamacintyabuddhivibhavādāsīnmayā yatkṛtam|

kṛtvā rūpamahaṃ tadeva nayanapralhādikaṃ dehinā-

meṣo'pyarkamayūkhajālamamalaṃ bhāmaṇḍalenākṣipan||42||



atha sthaviraḥ evamastu ityuktvā taṃ kuṇapamapanīya tathāgatarūpadarśanotsuko'vasthitaḥ| māraśca vanagahanamanupraviśya buddharūpaṃ kṛtvā naṭa iva suruciranepathyastasmādvanagahanādārabdho niṣkramitum| vakṣyate hi -



tāthāgataṃ vapurathottamalakṣaṇāḍhya-

mādarśayannayanaśāntikaraṃ narāṇām|

pratyagraraṅgamiva citrapaṭaṃ mahārha-

muddhāṭayan vanamasau tadalaṃcakāra||43||



atha vyāmaprabhāmaṇḍalamaṇḍitamasecanakadarśanaṃ bhagavato rūpamabhinirmāya dakṣiṇe parśve sthaviraśāradvatīputraṃ vāmapārśve sthaviramahāmaudgalyāyana pṛṣṭhataścāyuṣmantamānandaṃ buddhapātravyagrahastaṃ sthaviramahākaśyapāniruddhasubhūtiprabhṛtīnāṃ ca mahāśrāvakāṇāṃ rūpāṇyabhinirmāya ardhatrayodaśabhirbhikṣuśatairardhacandreṇānuparivṛtaṃ buddhaveṣamādarśayitvā māraḥ sthaviropaguptasyāntikamājagāma| sthaviropaguptasya ca bhagavato rūpamidamīdṛśamiti prāmodyamutpannam| sa pramuditamanāstvaritamāsanādutthāya nirīkṣamāṇa uvāca -



dhigastu tāṃ niṣkaruṇāmanityatāṃ

bhinatti rūpāṇi yadidṛśānyapi|

śarīramīdṛkkila tanmahāmune-

ranityatāṃ prāpya vināśamāgatam||44||



sa buddhāvalambanayā smṛtyā tathāpyāsaktamanāḥ saṃvṛtto yathā buddhaṃ bhagavantamahaṃ paśyāmīti vyaktamupāgataḥ| sa padmamukulapratimamañjaliṃ kṛtvovāca-aho rūpaśobhā bhagavataḥ| kiṃ bahunā ?



vakreṇābhibhavatyayaṃ hi kamalaṃ nīlotpalaṃ cakṣuṣā

kāntyā puṣpavanaṃ ghanaṃ priyatayā candraṃ samāptadyutim|

gāmbhīryeṇa mahodadhiṃ sthiratayā meruṃ raviṃ tejasā

gatyā siṃhamavekṣitena vṛṣabhaṃ varṇena cāmīkaram||45||



sa bhūyasyā mātrayā harṣeṇāpūryamāṇahṛdayo vyāpinā svareṇovāca-



aho bhāvaviśuddhānāṃ karmaṇo madhuraṃ phalam|

karmaṇedaṃ kṛtaṃ rūpaṃ naiśvaryeṇa yadṛcchayā||46||



yattatkalpasahasrakoṭiniyutairvākkāyacittodbhavaṃ

dānakṣāntisamādhibuddhiniyamaistenārhatā śodhitam|

tenedaṃ jananetrakāntamamalaṃ rūpaṃ samutthāpitaṃ

yaṃ dṛṣṭvā ripurapyabhipramuditaḥ syātkiṃ punarmadvidhaḥ||47||



saṃbuddhālambanaiḥ saṃjñāṃ vismṛtya buddhasaṃjñāmadhiṣṭhāya mūlanikṛtta iva drumaḥ sarvaśarīreṇa mārasya pādayornipatitaḥ| atha māraḥ sasaṃbhramo'bravīt-evaṃ taṃ bhadanta nārhasi samayaṃ vyatikramitum| sthavira uvāca-kaḥ samaya iti ? māra uvāca-nanu pratijñātaṃ bhadante-nāhaṃ bhavantaṃ praṇamiṣyāmīti| tataḥ sthaviropaguptaḥ pṛthivītalādutthāya sagadgadakaṇṭho'bravīt-pāpīyan,



na khalu na viditaṃ me yasya vādipradhāno

jalavihata ivādnirnirvṛtiṃ saṃprayātaḥ|

api tu nayanakāntāmākṛtiṃ tasya dṛṣṭvā

tamṛṣimabhinato'haṃ tvāṃ tu nābhyarcayāmi||48||



māra uvāca-kathamihāhaṃ nārcito bhavāmi, yadevaṃ māṃ praṇamasīti| sthaviro'bravīt- śrūyatām , yathā tvaṃ naiva mayā abhyarcito bhavasi, na ca mayā samayātikramaḥ kṛta iti|



mṛṇmayeṣu pratikṛtiṣvamarāṇāṃ yathā janaḥ|

mṛtasaṃjñāmanādṛtya namatyamarasaṃjñayā||49||



tathāhaṃ tvāmihodvīkṣya lokanāthavapurdharam|

mārasaṃjñāmanādṛtya nataḥ sugatasaṃjñayā||50||



atha māro buddhaveṣamantardhāpayitvā sthaviropaguptamabhyarcya prakrāntaḥ| yāvaccaturthe divase māraḥ svayameva mathurāyāṃ ghaṇṭāvaghoṣitumārabdhaḥ -yo yuṣmākaṃ svargāpavargasukhaṃ prārthayate, sa sthaviropaguptasakāśāddharmaṃ śṛṇotu, yaiśca yuṣmābhistathāgato na dṛṣtaste sthaviropaguptaṃ paśyantu iti| āha ca -



utsṛjya dāridryamanarthamūlaṃ

yaḥ sphītaśobhāṃ śriyamicchatīha|

svargāpavargāya ca yasya vāñchā

sa śraddhayā dharmamataḥ śṛṇotu||51||



dṛṣṭo na yairvā dvipadapradhānaḥ

śāstā mahākāruṇikaḥ svayaṃbhūḥ|

te śāstṛkalpaṃ sthaviropaguptaṃ

paśyantu bhāsvatrtribhavapradīpam||52||



yāvanmathurāyāṃ śabdo visṛtaḥ- sthaviropaguptena māro vinīta iti| śrutvā ca yadbhūyasā mathurāvāstavyo janakāyaḥ sthaviropaguptasakāśaṃ nirgataḥ| tataḥ sthaviropagupto'nekeṣu brāhmaṇaśatasahasreṣu saṃnipatiteṣu siṃha iva nirbhīḥ siṃhāsanamabhirūḍhaḥ| vakṣyati ca-



māṃ prati na te śakyaṃ siṃhāsanamaviduṣā samabhiroḍhum|

yaḥ sa siṃhāsanastho mṛga iva sa hi yāti saṃkocam||53||



siṃha iva yastu nirbhīrninadati pravarāridarpaṇāśārtham|

siṃhāsanamabhiroḍhuṃ sa kathikasiṃho bhavati yojñaḥ||54||



yāvat sthaviropaguptena pūrvakālakaraṇīyāṃ kathāṃ kṛtvā satyāni saṃprakāśitāni| śrutvā cānekaiḥ prāṇiśatasahasrairmokṣabhāgīyāni kuśalamūlānyākṣīptāni| kaiścidanāgāmiphalaṃ prāptam, kaiścit sakṛdāgāmiphalam, kaiścit srotaāpattiphalam, yāvadaṣṭādaśasahasrāṇi pravrajitāni| sarvaiśca yujyamānairyāvadarhattvaṃ prāptam||



tatra corumuṇḍaparvate guhā aṣṭādaśahastā dairghyeṇa dvādaśahastā vistāreṇa| yadā te kṛtakaraṇīyāḥ saṃvṛttāstadā sthaviropaguptenābhihitam-yo madīyenāvavādena sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkariṣyati, tena caturaṅgulamātrā śalākā guhāyāṃ prakṣeptavyā| yāvadekasmin divase daśabhirarhatsahasraiḥ śalākāḥ prakṣiptāḥ| tasya yāvadāsamudrāyāṃ (pṛthivyāṃ) śabdo visṛtaḥ mathurāyāmupaguptanāmā avavādakānāmagro nirdiṣṭo bhagavatā| tadyathā hi vinītakāmadhātvīśvare dvitīyaśāstṛkalpe mahātmani sthaviropagupte suramanujamahoragāsuragaruḍayakṣagandharvavidyādharārcitapādayugme pūrvabuddhakṣetrāvaropitakuśalabījasaṃtatīnāmanekeṣāṃ sattvaśatasahasrāṇāṃ saddharmasalilavarṣadhārānipātena mokṣāṅkurānabhivardhayannurumuṇḍe śaile||



kāryānurodhāt praṇatasakalasāmantacūḍāmaṇimayūkhodbhāsitapādapīṭhasyāśokasya rājñaḥ pūrvaṃ pāṃśupradānaṃ samanusmariṣyāmaḥ| ityevamanuśrūyate -



bhagavān rājagṛhe viharati veṇuvane kalindakanivāpe| atha bhagavān pūrvāhṇenivāsya pātracīvaramādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto bhikṣusaṃghapuraskṛto rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat| vakṣyati ca-



kanakācalasaṃnibhāgradeho

dviradendrapratimaḥ salīlagāmī|

parīpūrṇaśaśāṅkasaumyavaktro

bhagavān bhikṣugaṇairvṛto jagāma||55|



yāvadbhagavatā sābhisaṃskāraṃ nagaradvāre pādaṃ pratiṣṭhāpitam| dharmatā khalu yasmin samaye buddhā bhagavantaḥ sābhisaṃskāraṃ nagaradvāramindrakīle pādau vyavasthāpayanti, tadā citrāṇyadbhutāni prādurbhavanti| andhāścakṣūṃṣi pratilabhante| badhirāḥ śrotragrahaṇasamarthā bhavanti| paṅgavo gamanasamarthā bhavanti| haḍinigaḍacārakāvabaddhānāṃ sattvānāṃ bandhanāni śithilībhavanti| janmajanmavairānubaddhāḥ sattvāstadanantaraṃ maitracitratāṃ labhante| vatsā dāmāni cchittvā mātṛbhiḥ sārdhaḥ samāgacchanti| hastinaḥ krośanti, aśvā heṣante, ṛṣabhā garjanti, śukaśārikakokilajīvaṃjīvakabarhiṇo madhurān (śabdān) nikūjanti| peḍāgatā alaṃkārā madhuraśabdaṃ niścārayanti| apahāratāni ca vāditrabhāṇḍāni madhuraṃ śabdaṃ niścārayanti| unnatonnatāḥ pṛthivīpradeśā avanamanti| avanatāśconnamanti, apagatapāṣāṇaśarkarakapālāścāvatiṣṭhante| iyaṃ ca tasmin samaye pṛthivī ṣaḍvikāraṃ prakampate| tadyathā-pūrvo digbhāga unnamati paśimo'vanamati, anto'vanamati madhya unnamati, calitaḥ pracalito vedhitaḥ pravedhitaḥ| itīme cānye cādbhutadharmāḥ prādurbhavanti bhagavato nagarapraveśe| vakṣyati ca-



lavaṇajalanivāsinī tato vā

nagaranigamamaṇḍitā saśailā|

municaraṇanipīḍitā ca bhūmī

pavanabalābhihateva yānapātram||56||



atha buddhapraveśakālaniyataiḥ prātihāryairāvarjitāḥ strīmanuṣyāstannagaramanilabalacalitabhinnavīcītaraṅgakṣibhitamiva mahāsamudraṃ vimuktoccanādaṃ babhūva| na hi buddhapraveśatulyaṃ nāma jagatyadbhutamupalabhyate| purapraveśasamaye hi bhagavataścitrāṇyadbhutāni dṛśyante| vakṣyati ca-

nimnā connamate natāvanamate buddhānubhāvānmahī

sthāṇuḥ sarkarakaṇṭakavyapagato nirdoṣatāṃ yāti ca|

andhā mūkajaḍendriyāśca puruṣā vyaktendriyāstatkṣaṇaṃ

saṃvādyantyanighaṭṭitāśca nagare nandanti tūryasvanāḥ|| 57||



sarvaṃ ca tannagaraṃ sūryasahasrātirekayā kanakamarīcivarṇayā buddhaprabhayā sphuṭaṃ babhūva| āha ca -



sūryaprabhāmavabhartsya hi tasya bhābhi-

rvyāptaṃ jagatsakalameva sakānanastham|

saṃprāpya ca pravaradharmakathābhirāmo

lokaṃ surāsuranaraṃ hi samuktabhāvam||58||



yāvadbhagavān rājamārgaṃ pratipannaḥ| tatra dvau bāladārakau| eko'grakulikaputro dvitīyaḥ kulikaputraśca pāṃśvāgāraiḥ krīḍataḥ| ekasya jayo nāma, dvitīyasya vijayaḥ| tābhyāṃ bhagavān dṛṣṭo dvātriṃśanmahāpuruṣalakṣaṇālaṃkṛtaśarīraḥ asecanakadarśanaśca| yāvajjayena dārakena saṃktuṃ dāsyāmīti pāṃśvañjalirbhagavataḥ pātre prakṣiptaḥ, vijayena ca kṛtāñjalinābhyanumoditam| vakṣyati ca-



dṛṣṭvā mahākāruṇikaṃ svayaṃbhuvaṃ

vyāmaprabhoddyotitasarvagātram|

dhīreṇa vaktreṇa kṛtaprasādaḥ

pāṃśuṃ dadau jātijarāntakāya||59||



sa bhagavate pratipādayitvā praṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhaḥ-anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena ekacchatrāyāṃ pṛthivyāṃ rājā syām, atraiva ca buddhe bhagavati kārāṃ kuryāmiti|



tato munistasya niśāmya bhāvaṃ

bālasya samyakpraṇidhiṃ ca buddhvā|

iṣṭaṃ phalaṃ kṣetravaśena dṛṣṭvā

jagrāha pāṃśuṃ karuṇāyamānaḥ||60||



tena yāvadrājyavipākyaṃ kuśalamākṣiptam| tato bhagavatā smitaṃ vidarśitam| dharmatā khalu yasmin samaye buddhā bhagavantaḥ smitaṃ vidarśayanti, tasmin samaye nīlapītalohitāvadātamañjiṣṭhasphaṭikarajatavarṇā arciṣo mukhānniścaranti| kecidūrdhvato gacchanti, kecidadhastādgacchanti| ye'dho gacchanti, te saṃjīvaṃ kālasūtraṃ saṃghātaṃ rauravaṃ mahārauravaṃ tapanaṃ pratāpanamavīciparyanteṣu gatvā ye śītanarakāsteṣūṣṇībhūtvā nipatanti, ye uṣṇanarakāsteṣu śītībhūtvā nipatanti| tena teṣāṃ sattvānāṃ kāraṇāviśeṣāḥ pratiprasrabhyante| teṣāmevaṃ bhavati-kiṃ nu bhavanto vayamitaścyutāḥ, āhosvidanyatropapannā iti, yenāsmākaṃ kāraṇāviśeṣāḥ pratiprasrabdhāḥ| teṣāṃ bhagavān prasādasaṃjananārthaḥ nirmitaṃ visarjayati| teṣāmevaṃ bhavati- na vayamitaścyutāḥ, nāpyanyatropapannāḥ| api tvayamapūrvadarśanaḥ (sattvaḥ)| asyānubhāvenāsmākaṃ kāraṇāviśeṣāḥ pratiprasrabdhā iti| te nirmite cittāni prasādayitvā narakavedanīyāni karmāṇi kṣapayitvā devamanuṣyeṣu pratisaṃghi gṛhṇanti yatra satyānāṃ bhājanabhūtā bhavanti| ye ūrddhvato gacchanti , te cāturmahārājikān devāṃstrāyāstriṃśān yāmāṃstuṣitānnirmāṇaratīn paranirmitavaśavartinaḥ brahmakāyikān brahmapurohitān mahābrahmān parīttābhānapramāṇābhānābhāsvarān parīttaśubhānapramāṇaśubhān śubhakṛtsnānanabhrakān puṇyaprasavān bṛhatphalānabṛhānatapān sudṛśān sudarśanānakaniṣṭhaparyanteṣu deveṣu gatvā anityaṃ duḥkhaṃ śūnyamanātmeduddhoṣayanti| gāthādvayaṃ ca bhāṣante -



ārabhadhvaṃ niṣkrāmata yujyadhvaṃ buddhaśāsane|

dhunītaḥ mṛtyunaḥ sainyaṃ naḍāgāramiva kuñjaraḥ||61||



yo hyasmin dharmavinaye apramattaścariṣyati|

prahāya jātisaṃsāraṃ duḥkhasyāntaṃ kariṣyati||62



atha tā arciṣastrisāhasramahāsāhasraṃ lokadhātumanvāhiṇḍya bhagavantamevānugacchanti| yadi bhagavānatītaṃ karma vyākartukāmo bhavati, pṛṣṭhato'ntardhīyante| anāgataṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, purato'ntardhīyante| narakopapattiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, pādatale'ntardhīyante| tiryagupapattiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, pārṣṇyāmantardhīyante| pretopapattiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, pādāṅguṣṭhe'ntardhīyante| manuṣyopapattiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, jānuno'ntardhīyante| bālacakravartirājyaṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, vāme karatale'ntardhīyante| cakravartirājyaṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, dakṣiṇe karatale'ntardhīyante| devopapattiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, nābhyāmantardhīyante| śrāvakabodhiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, āsye'ntardhīyante| pratyekāṃ bodhiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, ūrṇāyāmantardhīyante| anuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhiṃ vyākartukāmo bhavati, uṣṇīṣe'ntardhīyante| atha tā arciṣo bhagavantaṃ triḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya bhagavato vāme karatale'ntarhitāḥ| athāyuṣmānānandaḥ kṛtāṅgalipuṭo gāthāṃ bhāṣate -



vigatodbhavā dainyamadaprahīṇā

buddhā jagatyuttamahetubhūtāḥ|

nākāraṇaṃ śaṅkhamṛṇālagauraṃ

smitaṃ vidarśayanti jinā jitārayaḥ||63||



tatkālaṃ svayamadhigamya vīra buddhyā

śrotṝṇāṃ śramaṇa jinendra kāṅkṣitānām|

dhīrābhirbhunivṛṣa vāgbhiruttamābhi-

rutpannaṃ vyapanaya saṃśayaṃ śubhābhiḥ||64||



meghastanitanirghoṣa govṛṣendranibhekṣaṇa|

phalaṃ pāṃśupradānasya vyākuruṣva narottama||65||



bhagavānāha-evametadānanda evametadānanda| nāhetvapratyayaṃ tathagatā arhantaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhāḥ smitamupadarśayanti| api tu sahetu sapratyayaṃ tathāgatā arhantaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhāḥ smitamupadarśayanti| paśyasi tvamānanda dārakaṃ yena tathāgatasya pātre pāṃśvañjaliḥ prakṣiptaḥ ? evaṃ bhadanta| ayamānanda dārako'nena kuśalamūlena varṣaśataparinirvṛtasya tathāgatasya pāṭaliputre nagare aśoko nāmnā rājā bhaviṣyati caturbhāgacakravartī dhārmiko dharmarājā, yo me śarīradhātūn vaistārikān kariṣyati| caturaśītiṃ dharmarājikāsahasraṃ pratiṣṭhāpayiṣyati| bahujanahitāya pratipatsyata iti| āha ca-



astaṃgate mayi bhaviṣyati ekarājā

yo'sau hyaśoka iti nāma viśālakīrtiḥ|

maddhātugarbhaparimaṇḍitajambukhaṇḍa-

metatkariṣyati narāmarapūjitānām||66||



ayamasya deyadharmo yattathāgatasya pāṃścañjaliḥ pātre prakṣiptaḥ| yāvadbhagavatā teṣāṃ sarva āyuṣmate ānandāya dattāḥ| gomayena miśrayitvā yatra caṃkrame tathāgataścaṃkramyate, tatra yogamakārṣī prayacchati| yāvadāyuṣmatā ānandena teṣāṃ sagomayena miśrayitvā yatra caṃkramati bhagavān, tatra gomayakārṣī dattā||



tena khalu punaḥ samayena rājagṛhye nagare bimbisāro rājā rājyaṃ kārayati| rājño bimbisārasya ajātaśatruḥ putraḥ| ajātaśatrorudāyī| udāyibhadrasya muṇḍaḥ| muṇḍasya kākavarṇī| kākavarṇinaḥ sahalī| sahalinastulakucī| tulakucermahāmaṇḍalaḥ| mahāmaṇḍalasya prasenajit| prasenajito nandaḥ| nandasya bindusāraḥ| pāṭaliputre nagare bindusāro nāma rājā rājyaṃ kārayati| bindusārasya rājñaḥ putro jātaḥ| tasya susīma iti nāmadheyaṃ kṛtam| tena ca samayena campāyāṃ nagaryāmanyatamo brāhmaṇaḥ| tasya duhitā jātā abhirūpā darśanīyā prāsādikā janapadakalyāṇī| sā naimittikairvyākṛtā-asyā dārikāyā rājā bhartā bhaviṣyati| dve putraratne janayiṣyati, ekaścaturbhāgacakravartī bhaviṣyati| dvitīyaḥ pravrajitā siddhavrato bhaviṣyati| śrutvā ca brāhmaṇasya romaharṣo jātaḥ| saṃpattikāmo lokaḥ| sa tāṃ duhitaraṃ grahāya pāṭaliputraṃ gataḥ| tena sā sarvālaṃkārairvibhūṣayitvā rājño bindurāsasya bhāryārthamanupradattā-iyaṃ hi devakanyā dhanyā praśastā ceti| yāvad rājñā bindusāreṇāntaḥpuraṃ praveśitā| antaḥpurikāṇāṃ buddhirutpannā-iyamabhirūpā prāsādikā janapadakalyāṇī| yadi rājā anayā sārdhaṃ paricārayiṣyati, asmākaṃ bhūyaścakṣuḥsaṃpreṣaṇamapi na kariṣyati| tābhiḥ sā nāpitākarma śikṣāpitā| sā rājñaḥ keśaśmaśruṃ prasādhayati yāvat suśikṣitā saṃvṛtā| yadā ārabhate rājñaḥ keśaśmaśruṃ prasādhayitum, tadā rājā śete| yāvat rājñā prītena vareṇa pravāritā -kiṃ tvaṃ varamicchasīti ? tayā abhihitam-devena me saha samāgamaḥ syāt| rājā āha-tvaṃ nāpinī, ahaṃ rājā kṣatriyo mūrdhābhiṣiktaḥ| kathaṃ mayā sārdhaṃ samāgamo bhaviṣyati ? sā kathayati-deva nāhaṃ nāpinī, api tu brāhmaṇasyāhaṃ duhitā| tena devasya patnyarthaṃ dattā| rājā kathayati-kena tvaṃ nāpitakarma śikṣāpitā ? sā kathayati-antaḥpurikābhiḥ| rājā āha- na bhūyastvayā nāpitakarma kartavyam| yāvadrājñā agramahiṣī sthāpitā| tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati| sā āpannasattvā saṃvṛttā| yāvadaṣṭānāṃ navānāṃ vā masānāmatyayāt prasūtā| tasyāḥ putro jātaḥ| tasya vistareṇa jātimahaṃ kṛtvā kiṃ kumārasya bhavatu nāma ? sā kathayati-asya dārakasya jātasya aśokāsmi saṃvṛttā| tasya aśoka iti nāma kṛtam| yāvaddvitīyaḥ putro jātaḥ| vigate śoke jātaḥ| tasya vigataśoka iti nāma kṛtam| aśoko duḥsparśagātraḥ| rājño bindusārasyānabhipretaḥ| atha rājā bindusāraḥ kumāraṃ parīkṣitukāmaḥ piṅgalavatsājīvaṃ parivrājakamāmantrayate-upādhyāya, kumārāṃstāvatparīkṣāmaḥ -kaḥ śakyate mamātyayādrājyaṃ kārayitum ? piṅgalavatsājīvaḥ parivrājakaḥ kathayati-tena hi deva kumārānādāya suvarṇamaṇḍapamudyānaṃ nirgaccha, parīkṣāmaḥ| yāvadrājā kumārānādāya suvarṇamaṇḍapamudyānaṃ nirgataḥ| yāvadaśokaḥ kumāro mātrā cicyate-vatsa, rājā kumārān parīkṣitukāmaḥ suvarṇamaṇḍapamudyānaṃ gataḥ, tvamapi tatra gaccheti| aśokaḥ kathayati-rājño'hamanabhipreto darśanenāpi, kimahaṃ tatra gamiṣyāmi ? sā kathayati-tathāpigaccheti| aśoka uvaca-āhāraṃ preṣaya| yāvadaśokaḥ| pāṭaliputrānnirgacchati, rādhaguptena cāgrāmātyaputreṇokaḥ-aśoka, kka gamiṣyasīti ? aśokaḥ kathayati-rājā adya suvarṇamaṇḍape udyāne kumārān parīkṣayati| tatra rājño mahallako hastināgastiṣṭhati| yāvadaśokastasmin mahallake'bhiruhya suvarṇamaṇḍapamudyānaṃ gatvā kumārāṇāṃ madhye'tra pṛthivyāṃ prastīrya niṣasāda| yāvat kumārāṇāmāhāra upanāmitaḥ| aśokasyāpi śālyodanaṃ dadhisamiśraṃ mṛdbhājane preṣitam| tato rājñā bindusāreṇa piṅgalavatsājīvaḥ parivrājako'bhihitaḥ- upādyāya, parīkṣa kumārān-kaḥ śakyate mamātyayādrājyaṃ kartumiti ? paśyati piṅgalavatsājīvaḥ parivrājakaḥ, cintayati ca-aśoko rājā bhaviṣyati| ayaṃ ca rājño nābhipretaḥ| yadi kathayiṣyāmi| aśoko rājā bhaviṣyatīti, nāsti me jīvitam| sa kathayati-deva abhedena vyākariṣyāmi| rājā āha-abhedena vyākuruṣva| āha-yasya yānaṃ śobhanaṃ sa rājā bhaviṣyati| teṣāmekaikasya buddhirutpannā - mama yānaṃ śobhanam| ahaṃ rājā bhaviṣyāmi| aśokaścintayati-ahaṃ hastiskandhenāgataḥ| mama yānaṃ śobhanam , ahaṃ rājā bhaviṣyāmīti| rājā āha-bhūyastāvadupādhyāya parīkṣasva| piṅgalavatsājīvaḥ parivrājakaḥ kathayati-deva, yasyāsanamagram, sa rājā bhaviṣyati| teṣāmekaikasya buddhirutpannā-mamāsanamagram| ahsokaścintayati-mama pṛthivyāsanam, ahaṃ rājā bhaviṣyāmi| evaṃ bhājanaṃ bhojanaṃ pānam| vistareṇa kumārān parīkṣya praviṣṭaḥ| yāvadaśoko mātrocyate-ko vyākṛto rājā bhaviṣyatīti ? aśokaḥ kathayati-abhedena vyākṛtam-yasya yānamagramāsanaṃ pānaṃ bhājanaṃ bhojanaṃ ceti, sa rājā bhaviṣyatīti| yathā paśyami-ahaṃ rājā bhaviṣyāmi| mama hastiskandhaṃ yānaṃ pṛthivī āsanaṃ mṛṇmayaṃ bhājanaṃ śālyodanaṃ dadhivyañjanaṃ pānīyaṃ pānamiti||



tataḥ piṅgalavatsājīvaḥ paribrājakaḥ aśoko rājā bhaviṣyatīti tasya mātaramārabdhaḥ sevitum| yāvat tayocyate-upādhyāya, kataraḥ kumāro rājño bindusārasyātyayādrājā bhaviṣyatīti ? āha-aśokaḥ| tayocyate-kadācit tvāṃ rājā nirbandhena pṛcchet| gaccha tvam| pratyantaṃ samāśraya| yadā śṛṇoṣi aśoko rājā saṃvṛttaḥ, tadā āgantavyam| yāvat sa pratyanteṣu janapadeṣu saṃśritaḥ||



atha rājño bindusārasya takṣaśilā nāma nagaraṃ viruddham| tatra rājñā bindusāreṇa aśoko visarjitaḥ-gaccha kumāra, takṣiśilānagaraṃ saṃnāhaya| raturaṅgaṃ balakāyaṃ dattam, yānaṃ praharaṇaṃ ca pratiṣiddham| yāvadaśokaḥ kumāraḥ pāṭaliputrānnirgacchan bhaṛtyairvijñaptaḥ-kumāra, naivāsmākaṃ saunyapraharaṇam-kena vayaṃ kaṃ yudhyāmaḥ ? tataḥ aśokenābhihitam-yadi nāma rājyavipākyaṃ kuśalamasti, sainyaṃ praharaṇaṃ ca prādurbhavatu| evamukte kumāreṇa pṛthivyāmavakāśo dattaḥ| devatābhiḥ sainyapraharaṇāni copanītāni| yāvat kumāracchaturaṅgena bālakālena takṣaśilāṃ gataḥ| śrutvā takṣaśilānivāsinaḥ paurā ardhatṛtīyāni yojanāni mārge śobhāṃ kṛtvā pūrṇaghaṭamādāya pratyudgatāḥ| pratyudgamya ca kathayanti-na vayaṃ kumārasya viruddhāḥ, nāpi rājño bindusārasya, api tu duṣṭāmātyā asmākaṃ paribhavaṃ kurvanti| mahatā ca satkāreṇa takṣaśilāṃ praveśitaḥ| evaṃ vistareṇāśikaḥ khaśarājyaṃ praveśitaḥ| tasya dvau mahānagnau saṃśritau| tena tau vṛttyā saṃvibhaktau tasyāgrataḥ parvatān saṃchindantau saṃprasthitau| devatāmiścoktam-aśokaścaturbhāgacakravartī bhaviṣyati, na kenacidvirodhitavyamiti| vistareṇa yāvadāsamudrā pṛthivī ājñāpitā||



yāvat susīmaḥ kumāra udyānāt pāṭaliputraṃ praviśati| rājño bindusārasyāgrāmātyaḥ khallāṭakaḥ pāṭaliputrānnirgacchati| tasya susīmena kumāreṇa krīḍābhiprāyatayā khaṭakā pātitā| yāvadamātyaścintayati-idānīṃ khaṭakāṃ nipātayati| yadā rājā bhaviṣyati, tadā śastraṃ pātayiṣyati| tathā kariṣyāmi yathā rājaiva na bhaviṣyati| tena pañcāmātyaśatāni bhinnāni| aśokaścaturbhāgacakravartī nirdiṣṭa eva, rājye pratiṣṭhāpayiṣyāmaḥ| takṣaśilāśca virodhitāḥ| yāvadrājñā susīmaḥ kumārastakṣaśilāmanupreṣitaḥ| na ca śakyate saṃnāmayitum| bindusāraśca rājā glānībhūtaḥ| tenābhihitam-susīmaṃ kumāramānayatha, rājye pratiṣṭhāpayiṣyāmīti| aśokaṃ takṣaśilāṃ praveśayatha| yāvadamātyairaśoka kumāro haridrayā pralipto lākṣāṃ ca lohapātre kkāthayitvā kkathitena rasena lohapātrāṇi mrakṣayitvā chorayanti- aśokaḥ kumāro glānībhūta iti| yadā bindusāraḥ svalpāvaśeṣaprāṇaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ, tadā amātyairaśokaḥ kumāraḥ sarvālaṃkārairbhūṣayitvā rājño bindusārasyopanītaḥ - imaṃ tāvadrājye pratiṣṭhāpaya| yadā susīma āgato bhaviṣyati, tadā taṃ rājye pratiṣṭhāpayiṣyāmaḥ| tato rājā ruṣitaḥ| aśokena cābhihitam- yadi mama dharmeṇa rājyaṃ bhavati, devatā mama paṭṭaṃ bandhantu| yāvaddevatābhiḥ paṭṭo baddhaḥ| taṃ dṛṣṭvā bindusārasya rājña uṣṇaṃ śoṇitaṃ mukhādāgataṃ yāvatkālagataḥ| yadā aśoko rājye pratiṣṭhitaḥ, tasyordhva yojanaṃ yakṣāḥ śṛṇvanti, adho yojanaṃ nāgāḥ| tena rādhagupto'grāmātyaḥ sthāpitaḥ| susīmenāpi śrutam-bindusāro rājā kālagataḥ, aśoko rājye pratiṣṭhitaḥ| iti śrutvā ca ruṣito'bhyāgataḥ| tvaritaṃ ca tasmāddeśādāgataḥ| aśokenāpi pāṭaliputre nagare ekasmin dvāre eko nagnaḥ sthāpitaḥ, dvitīye, tṛtīye rādhaguptaḥ, pūrvadvāre svayameva rājā aśoko'vasthitaḥ| rādhaguptena ca pūrvasmin dvāre yantramayo hastī sthāpitaḥ| aśokasya ca pratimāṃ parikhāṃ khanayitvā khadirāṅgāraiśca pūrayitvā tṛṇenācchādya pāṃśunākīrṇā| susīmaścābhihitaḥ-yadi śakyase'śokaṃ ghātayitu rājeti (?)| sa yāvatpūrvadvāraṃ gataḥ - aśokena saha yotsyāmīti| aṅgārapūrṇāyāṃ parikhāyāṃ patitaḥ| tatraiva cānayena vyasanamāpannaḥ| yadā ca susīmaḥ praghātitaḥ, tasyāpi mahānagno bhadrāyudho nāmnā anekasahasraparivāraḥ, sa bhagavacchāsane pravrajito'rhan saṃvṛttaḥ||



yadā aśoko rājye pratiṣṭhitaḥ sa tairamātyairavajñayā dṛśyate| tenāmātyānāmabhihitam-bhavantaḥ, puṣpavṛkṣān phalavṛkṣāṃśca chittvā kaṇṭakavṛkṣān paripālayatha| amātyā āhuḥ-devena kutra dṛṣṭam ? api tu kaṇṭakavṛkṣān chittvā puṣpavṛkṣān phalavṛkṣāṃśca paripālayitavyam| tairyāvat trirapi rājña ājñā pratikūlitā, tato rājñā ruṣitena asiṃ niṣkośaṃ kṛtvā pañcānāmamātyaśatānāṃ śirāṃsi chinnāni| yāvadrājā aśoko'pareṇa samayenāntaḥpuraparivṛto vasantakālasamaye puṣpikāphaliteṣu pādapeṣu pūrvanagarasyodyānaṃ gataḥ| tatra ca paribhramatā aśokavṛkṣaḥ supuṣpito dṛṣṭaḥ| tato rājño mamāyaṃ sahanāmā ityanunayo jātaḥ| sa ca rājā aśoko duḥsparśagātraḥ| tā yuvatayastaṃ necchanti spraṣṭum| yāvadrājā śayitaḥ, tasyāntaḥpureṇa roṣeṇa tasmādaśokavṛkṣāt puṣpāṇi śākhāśca chinnāḥ| yāvadrājñā pratibuddhena so'śokavṛkṣo dṛṣṭaḥ, pṛṣṭaśca- kena tacchinnam ? te kathayanti-deva, antaḥpurikābhiriti| śrutvā ca rājñā amarṣajātena pañca strīśatāni kiṭikai saṃveṣṭya dagdhāni| tasyemānyaśubhānyālokya caṇḍo rājā caṇḍāśoka iti vyavasthāpitaḥ| yāvadrādhaguptenāgrāmātyenābhihitaḥ-deva, na sadṛśaṃ svayamevedṛśamakāryaṃ kartum| api tu devasya vadhyaghātakāḥ puruṣāḥ sthāpayitavyāḥ , ye devasya vadhyakaraṇīyaṃ śodhayiṣyanti| yāvadrājñā rājapuruṣāḥ prayuktāḥ- vadhyaghātaṃ me mārgadhveti|



yāvat tatra nātidūre parvatapādamūle karvaṭakam| tatra tantravāyaḥ prativasati tasya putro jātaḥ| girika iti nāmadheyaṃ kṛtam| caṇḍo duṣṭātmā mātaraṃ pitaraṃ ca paribhāṣate, dārakadārikāśca tāḍayati, pipīlikān makṣikān mūṣikān matsyāṃśca jālena baḍiśena praghātayati| caṇḍo dārakastasya caṇḍagirika iti nāmadheyaṃ kṛtam| yāvadrājapuruṣairdṛṣṭaḥ pāpe karmaṇi pravṛttaḥ| sa tairabhihitaḥ-śakyase rājño'śokasya vadhyakaraṇīyaṃ kartum ? sa āha -kṛtsnasya jambudvīpasya vadhyakaraṇīyaṃ sādhayiṣyāmīti| yāvadrājño niveditam| rājñā abhihitam-ānīyatāmiti| sa ca rājapuruṣairabhihitaḥ-āgaccha, rājā tvāmāhvayatīti| tenābhihitam-āgamayata, yāvadahaṃ mātāpitarau avalokayāmīti| yāvanmātāpitarau uvāca-amba tāta, anujānīdhvam| yāsyāmyahaṃ rājño'śokasya vadhyakaraṇīyaṃ sādhuyitum| tābhyāṃ ca sa nivāritaḥ| tena tau jīvitādvyaparopitau| evaṃ yāvadrājapuruṣairabhihitaḥ -kimarthaṃ cireṇābhyāgato'si ? tena caitatprakaraṇaṃ vistareṇārocitam| sa tairyāvadrājño'śokasyopanāmitaḥ| tena rājño'bhihitam-mamārthāya gṛhaṃ kārayasveti| yāvadrājñā gṛhaṃ kārāpitaṃ paramaśobhanaṃ dvāramātraramaṇīyam| tasya ramaṇīyakaṃ bandhanamiti saṃjñā vyavasthāpitā| sa āha-deva, varaṃ me prayaccha, yastatra praviśettasya na bhūyo nirgama iti| yāvadrājñābhihitam-evamastu iti||



tataḥ sa caṇḍagirikaḥ kurkuṭārāmaṃ gataḥ| bhikṣuśca bālapaṇḍitaḥ sūtraṃ paṭhati| sattvā narakeṣūpapannāḥ| yāvannarakapālā gṛhītvā ayomayyāṃ bhūmau ādīptāyāṃ saṃprajvalitāyāmekajvālībhūtāyāmuttānakān pratiṣṭhāpya āyomayena viṣkambhakena mukhadvāraṃ viṣkambhya āyoguḍānādīptān pradīptān saṃprajvalitānekajvālībhūtānāsye prakṣipanti, ye teṣāṃ sattvānāmoṣṭhau api dahanti, jihvāmapi kaṇṭamapi kaṇṭhanālamapi hṛdayamapi hṛdayasāmantamapi antrāṇyantraguṇānapi dagdhvā adhaḥ pragharati| evaṃ duḥkhā hi bhikṣavo nārakāḥ sattvā narakeṣūpapannāḥ| yāvannarakapālā gṛhītvā ayomayyāṃ bhūmau ādīptāyāṃ saṃprajvalitāyāmekajvālībhūtāyāmuttānakān pratiṣṭhāpya āyomayena viṣkambhakena mukhadvāraṃ viṣkambhya kkathitaṃ tāmramāsye prakṣipanti,yatteṣāṃ sattvānāmoṣṭhāvapi dahati, jihvāmapi tālvapi kaṇṭhamapi kanṭhanālamapi antrāṇyantraguṇānapi dagdhvā adhaḥ pragharati| evaṃ duḥkhā hi bhikṣavo narakāḥ| santi sattvā narakeṣūpapannā yānnarakapālā gṛhītvā ayomayyāṃ bhūmau ādīptāyāṃ saṃprajvalitāyāmekajvālībhūtāyāmavāṅmukhān pratiṣṭhāpya āyomayena sūtreṇādīptena saṃprajvalitenaikajvālībhūtenāsphāṭya ayomayena kuṭhāreṇādīptena saṃpradīptena saṃprajvalitenaikajvālībhūtena takṣṇuvanti saṃtakṣṇuvanti saṃpratakṣṇuvanti aṣṭāṃśamapi ṣaḍaṃśamapi caturasramapi vṛttamapi maṇḍalamapi unnatamapi avanamapi śāntamapi viśāntamapi takṣṇuvanti| evaṃ duḥkhā hi bhikṣavo narakāḥ| santi sattvā narakeṣūpapannā yānnarakapālā gṛhītvā ayomayyāṃ bhūmau ādīptāyāṃ pradīptāyāṃ saṃprajvalitāyāmakejvālībhūtāyāmavāṅmukhān pratiṣṭhāpya āyomayena sūtreṇādīptena pradīptena saṃprajvalitenaikajvālībhūte nāsphāṭya āyomayyāṃ bhūmyāmādīptāyāṃ pradīptāyāṃ saṃprajvalitāyāmekajvalībhūtāyāṃ takṣṇuvanti saṃtakṣṇuvanti saṃparitakṣṇuvanti, aṣṭāṃśamapi ṣaḍaṃśamapi caturasramapi maṇḍalamapi unnatamapi avanatamapi śāntamapi viśāntamapi takṣṇuvanti| evaṃ duḥkhā hi bhikṣavo narakāḥ| santi sattvā narakeṣūpapannā yānnarakapālā gṛhītvā ayomayyāṃ bhūmāvadīptāyāṃ pradīptāyāṃ saṃprajvalitāyāmekajvālībhūtāyāmuttānakān pratiṣṭhāya pañcaviṣaṭabandhanāṃ kāraṇāṃ kārayanti, ubhayorhastayorāsau kīlau krāmanti, ubhayoḥ pādayorāyase kīle krāmanti, madhye hṛdayasyāyasaṃ kīlaṃ krāmanti| (evaṃ) suduḥkhā hi bhikṣavo narakāḥ| evaṃ pañca vedanā iti kurute sadṛśāśca kāraṇāḥ sattvānāmārabdhāḥ kārayitum||



yāvat śrāvastyāmanyatamaḥ sārthavāhaḥ patnyā saha mahāsamudramavatīrṇaḥ| tasya sā patnī mahāsamudre prasūtā| dārako jātaḥ| tasya samudra iti nāmadheyaṃ kṛtam| yāvadvistareṇa dvādaśabhirvarṣairmahāsamudrāduttīrṇaḥ| sa ca sārthavāhaḥ pañcabhirdhūrtaśatairmuṣitaḥ| sārthavāhaḥ sa praghātitaḥ| sa ca samudraḥ sārthavāhaputro bhagavacchāsane pravrajitaḥ| sa janapadacārikāṃ caran pāṭaliputramanuprāptaḥ| sa pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya pāṭaliputraṃ piṇḍāya praviṣṭaḥ| so'nabhijñatayā ca ramaṇīyakaṃ bhavanaṃ praviṣṭaḥ| tacca dvāramātraramaṇīyamabhyantaraṃ narakabhavanasadṛśaṃ pratibhayam| dṛṣṭvā ca punarnirgantukāmaścaṇḍagirikenāvalokitaḥ| gṛhītvā coktaḥ-iha te nidhanamupagantavyamiti| vistareṇa kāryam| tato bhikṣuḥ śokārto bāṣpakaṇṭhaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ| tenocyate-kimidaṃ bāladāraka iva rudasīti ? sa bhikṣuḥ prāha-



na śarīravināśaṃ hi śocāmi sarvaśaḥ|

mokṣadharmāntarāyaṃ tu śocāmi bhṛśamātmanaḥ||67||



durlabhaṃ prāpyaṃ mānuṣyaṃ pravrajyāṃ ca sukhodayām|

śākyasiṃhaṃ ca śāstāraṃ punastyakṣyāmi durmatiḥ|| 68||



tenocyate-dattavaro'haṃ nṛpatinā| dhīro bhava| nāsti te mokṣa iti| tataḥ sakaruṇairvacanairstaṃ bhikṣuḥ kramaṃ yācati sma māsaṃ yāvat| saptarātramanujñātaḥ| sa khalu maraṇabhayodvignahṛdayaḥ saptarātreṇa me na bhavitavyamiti vyāyatamatiḥ saṃvṛttaḥ||



atha saptame divase'śokasya rājño'ntaḥpurikāṃ kumāreṇa saha saṃraktāṃ nirīkṣamāṇāṃ saṃlapantīṃ ca dṛṣṭvā sahadarśanādeva ruṣitena rājñā tau dvāvapi taṃ cārakamanupreṣitau| tatra musalairayodroṇyāmasthyavaśeṣau kṛtau| tato bhikṣustau dṛṣṭvā saṃvignaḥ prāha-



aho kāriṇikaḥ śāstā samyagāha mahāmuniḥ|

phenapiṇḍopamaṃ rūpamasāramanavasthitam||69||



kka tadvadanakāntitvaṃ gātraśobhā kka sā gatā|

dhigastvayaṃ saṃsāro ramante yatra bāliśāḥ| 70||



idamālambanaṃ prāptaṃ cārake vasatā mayā|

yamāśritya tariṣyāmi pāramadya bhavodadheḥ|| 71||



tena tāṃ rajanīṃ kṛtsnāṃ yujyatā buddhaśāsane|

sarvasaṃyojanaṃ chittvā prāptamarhattvamuttamam||72||



tatastasmin rajanīkṣaye sa bhikṣuścaṇḍagirikenocyate - bhikṣo, nirgatā rātriḥ| udita ādityaḥ| kāraṇākālastaveti| tato bhikṣurāha-dīrghāyuḥ, mamāpi nirgatā nirgatā rātriḥ, udita ādityaḥ| parānugrahakāla iti| yatheṣṭaṃ vartatāmiti| caṇḍāgirikaḥ prāha-nāvagacchāmi| vistīryatāṃ vacanametaditi| tato bhikṣurāha -



mamāpi hṛdayāddhorā nirgatā mohaśarvarī|

pañcāvaraṇasaṃchannā kleśataskarasevitā||73||



udito jñānasūryaśca manonabhasi me śubhaḥ|

prabhayā yasya paśyāmi trailokyamiha tattvataḥ||74|



parānugrahakālo me śāsturvṛttānuvartinaḥ|

idaṃ śarīraṃ dīrghāyuryatheṣṭaṃ kriyatāmiti|| 75||



tatastena nirghṛṇena dāruṇahṛdayena paralokanirapekṣeṇa roṣāviṣṭena bahūdakāyāṃ sthālyāṃ nararudhiravasāmūtrapurīṣasaṃkulāyāṃ mahālohyāṃ prakṣiptaḥ| prabhūtendhanaiścāgniḥ prajvālitaḥ| sa ca bahunāpīndhanakṣayena na saṃtapyate| tataḥ prajvālayituṃ (prārabdhaḥ)| yadā tadāpi na prajvalati, tato vicārya tāṃ lohīṃ, paśyati taṃ bhikṣuṃ padmasyopari paryaṅkenopaviṣṭam| dṛṣṭvā ca tato rājñe nivedayāmāsa| atha rājani samāgate prāṇisahasreṣu saṃnipatiteṣu sa bhikṣurvaineyakālamavekṣamāṇaḥ -



riddhiṃ samutpādya sa tanmuhūrtaṃ

lohyantarasthaḥ salilārdragātraḥ|

nirīkṣamāṇasya janasya madhye

nabhastalaṃ haṃsa ivotpapāta||76||



vicitrāṇi ca prātihāryāṇi darśayitumārabdha| vakṣyati hi -



ardhena gātreṇa vavarṣa toya -

mardhena jajvāla hutāśanaśca|

varṣan jvalaṃścaiva rarāja yaḥ khe

dīptauṣadhiprasravaṇeva śailaḥ|| 77||



tamudgataṃ vyomni niśāmya rājā

kṛtāñjalirvismayaphullavaktraḥ|

udvīkṣamāṇastamuvāca dhīraṃ

kautūhalātkiṃcidahaṃ vivakṣuḥ||78||



manuṣyatulyaṃ tava saumya rūpaṃ

ṛddhiprabhāvastu narānatītya|

na niścayaṃ tena vimo vrajāmi

ko nāma bhāvastava śuddhabhāva||79||



tatsāṃprataṃ brūhi mamedamarthaṃ

yathā prajānāmi tava prabhāvam|

jñātvā ca te dharmaguṇaprabhāvān|

yathābalaṃ śiṣyavadācareyam||80||



tato bhikṣuḥ pravacanaparigrāhako'yaṃ bhaviṣyati, bhagavaddhātuṃ ca vistarīṃ kariṣyati, mahājanahitārthaṃ ca pratipatsyata iti matvā svaguṇamudbhāvayaṃstamuvāca-



ahaṃ mahākāruṇikasya rājan

prahīṇasarvāśravabandhanasya|

buddhasya putro vadatāṃ varasya

dharmānvayaḥ sarvabhaveṣvasaktaḥ||81||



dāntena dāntaḥ puruṣarṣabheṇa

śāntiṃ gatenāpi śamaṃ praṇītaḥ|

muktena saṃsāramahābhayebhyo

nirmokṣito'haṃ bhavabandhanebhyaḥ|| 82||



api ca| mahārāja, tvaṃ bhagavatā vyākṛtaḥ-varṣaśataparinirvṛtasya mama pāṭaliputre nagare'śoko nāma rājā bhaviṣyati caturbhāgacakravartī dharmarājaḥ, yo me śarīradhātūn vaistārikān kariṣyati, caturaśītiṃ dharmarājikāsahasraṃ pratiṣṭhāpayiṣyati| idaṃ ca devena narakasadṛśaṃ sthānameva sthāpitaṃ yatra prāṇisahasrāṇi nipātyante| tadarhasi| deva sarvasattvebhyo'bhayapradānaṃ dātum, bhagavataśca manorathaṃ paripūrayitum| āha ca-



tasmānnarendra abhayaṃ prayaccha

sattveṣu kāruṇyapurojaveṣu|

nāthasya saṃpūrya manorathaṃ ca

vistārikān dharmadharān kuruṣva||83||



atha sa rājā buddhe samupajātaprasādaḥ kṛtakarasaṃpuṭastaṃ bhikṣuṃ kṣamayannuvāca-



daśabalasuta kṣantumarhasīmaṃ

kukṛtamidaṃ ca tavādya deśayāmi|

śaraṇamṛṣimupaimi taṃ ca buddhaṃ

gaṇavaramāryaniveditaṃ ca dharmam||84||



api ca -

karomi caiṣa vyavasāyamadya taṃ

tadgauravāttatpravaṇaprasādāt|

gāṃ maṇḍayiṣyāmi jinendracaityai -

rhaṃsāṃśaśaṅkhendubalākakalpaiḥ||85||



yāvat sa bhikṣustadeva ṛddhyā prakrāntaḥ| atha rājā ārabdho niṣkrāmitum| tataścaṇḍagirikaḥ kṛtāñjaliruvāca-deva, labdhavaro'ham| naikasya vinirgama iti| rājā āha-mā tāvanmamāpīcchasi ghātayitum| sa uvāca-evameva| rājā āha-ko'smākaṃ prathamataraṃ praviṣṭaḥ ? caṇḍagirika uvāca-aham| tato rājñā abhihitam| ko'treti ? yāvadvadhyaghātairgṛhītaḥ| gṛhītvā ca yantragṛhaṃ praveśitaḥ| praveśayitvā dagdhaḥ| tacca ramaṇīyakaṃ bandhanamapanītam sarvasattvebhyaścābhayapradānamanupradattam| tato rājā bhagavaccharīradhātuṃ vistarīṣyāmīti caturaṅgena balakāyena gatvā ajātaśatrupratiṣṭhāpitaṃ droṇastūpamutpāṭya śarīradhātuṃ gṛhītavān| yatroddhāraṇaṃ ca vistareṇa kṛtvā dhātupratyaśaṃ datvā stūpaṃ pratiṣṭhāpya evaṃ dvitīyaṃ stūpam vistareṇa bhaktimato yāvatsaptadroṇādgrahāya stūpāṃśca pratiṣṭhāpya rāmagrāmaṃ gataḥ| tato rājā nāgairnāgabhavanamavatāritaḥ, vijñāptaśca-vayamasyātraiva pūjāṃ kariṣyāma iti| yāvadrājñā abhyanujñātam| tato nāgarājā punarapi nāgabhavanāduttāritaḥ| vakṣyati hi -



rāmagrāme tvaṣṭamaṃ stūpamadya

nāgāstatkālaṃ bhaktimanto rarakṣuḥ|

dhātūnyetasmānnopalebhe sa rājā

śraddhābhū (?) rājā cintayati yastvetatkṛtvā jagāma||86||



yāvadrājā caturaśītikaraṇḍasahasraṃ kārayitvā sauvarṇarūpyasphaṭikavaiḍūryamayānāṃ teṣu dhātavaḥ prakṣiptāḥ| evaṃ vistareṇa caturaśītikumbhasahasraṃ paṭṭasahasraṃ ca yakṣāṇāṃ haste datvā visarjitam-āsamudrāyāṃ pṛthivyāṃ hīnotkṛṣṭamadhyameṣu nagareṣu yatra koṭiḥ paripūryate, tatra dharmarājikāṃ pratiṣṭhāpayitavyam||



tasmin samaye takṣaśilāyāṃ ṣaṭtriṃśatkoṭayaḥ| tairabhihitam-ṣaṭtriṃśatkaraṇḍakānanuprayaccheti| rājā cintayāti- na yadi vaistārikā dhātavo bhaviṣyanti| upāyajño rājā| tenābhihitam- pañcatriṃśatkoṭayaḥ śodhayitavyāḥ| vistareṇa yāvadrājñā abhihitam-yatrādhikatarā bhavanti, yatra ca nyūnatarāḥ, tatra na dātavyam||



yāvadrājā kurkuṭārāmaṃ gatvā sthavirayaśasamabhigamyovāca-ayaṃ me manorathaḥ-ekasmin divase ekasminmuhūrte caturaśītidharmarājikāsahasraṃ pratiṣṭhāpayeyamiti| sthavireṇābhihitam-evamastu| ahaṃ tasmin samaye pāṇināṃ sūryamaṇḍalaṃ praticchādayiṣyāmīti| yāvat tasmin divase sthavirayaśasā pāṇinā sūryamaṇḍalaṃ praticchāditam| ekasmin divase ekamuhūrte caturaśītidharmarājikāsahasraṃ pratiṣṭhāpitam| vakṣyati ca-



tābhyaḥ saptabhyaḥ pūrvikābhyaḥ kṛtibhyo

dhātuṃ tasya ṛṣeḥ sa hyupādāya mauryaḥ|

cakre stūpānāṃ śāradābhraprabhānāṃ

loke sāśīti śāsadahnā sahasram||87||



yāvacca rājñā aśokena caturaśītidharmarājikāsahasraṃ pratiṣṭhāpitam, dhārmiko dharmarājā saṃvṛttaḥ| tasya dharmāśoka iti saṃjñā jātā| vakṣyati ca -



āryamauryaśrīḥ sa prajānāṃ hitārthaṃ

kṛtsnaṃ stūpān kārayāmāsa lokam|

caṇḍāśokatvaṃ prāpya pūrvaṃ pṛthivyāṃ

dharmāśokatvaṃ karmaṇā tena lebhe||88||
