buddho bhagavān rājagṛhe viharati veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe | rājagṛhe nagare subhadro nāma gṛhapatiḥ prativasati āḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogaḥ | so'tyarthaṃ nirgrantheṣvabhiprasannaḥ | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatramānītam | sa tayā sārdhaṃ krīḍati ramate paricārayati | tasya krīḍato ramamāṇasya paricārayataḥ kālāntareṇa patnī āpannasattvā saṃvṛttā | bhagavān pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya prāvikṣat | rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya caran yena subhadrasya gṛhapaterniveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | adrākṣīt subhadro gṛhapatirbhagavantaṃ dūrādeva | dṛṣṭvā ca punaḥ patnīmādāya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavantamidamavocat-bhagavan, iyaṃ me patnī āpannasattvā saṃvṛttā | kiṃ janayiṣyatīti | bhagavānāha-gṛhapate, putraṃ janayiṣyati, kulamuddyotayiṣyati, divyamānuṣīṃ śriyaṃ pratyanubhaviṣyati, mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkariṣyati | tena bhagavataḥ śucinaḥ praṇītasya khādanīyabhojanīyasya pātrapūro dattaḥ | bhagavānārogya ityuktvā piṇḍapātamādāya prakrāntaḥ | tasya nātidūre bhūrikastiṣṭhati | sa saṃlakṣayati-yadapyasmākamekaṃ bhikṣākulam, tadapi śramaṇo gautamo'nvāvartayati | gacchāmi, paśyāmi kiṃ śramaṇena gautamena vyākṛtamiti | sa tatra gatvā kathayati-gṛhapate, śramaṇo gautama āgata āsīt ? āgataḥ | kiṃ tena vyākṛtam ? ārya, mayā tasya patnī darśitā-kiṃ janayiṣyati ? sa kathayati-putraṃ janayiṣyati, kulamuddyotayiṣyati, divyamānuṣīṃ śriyaṃ pratyanubhaviṣyati, mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkariṣyatīti | sa bhūriko gaṇitre kṛtāvī śvetavarṇāṃ gṛhītvā gaṇayitumārabdhaḥ-paśyati yathā bhagavatā vyākṛtaṃ tatsarvaṃ tathaiva | sa saṃlakṣayati-yadi anusaṃvarṇayiṣyāmyaham, gṛhapatirbhūyasyā mātrayā śramaṇasya gautamasyābhipraśaṃsyati | tadatra kiṃcid saṃvarṇayitavyaṃ kiṃcit vivarṇayitavyamiti viditvā hastau saṃparivartayati, mukhaṃ ca vibhaṇḍayati | subhadro gṛhapatiḥ kathayati-ārya, kiṃ hastau saṃparivartayasi mukhaṃ ca vibhaṇḍayasīti ? sa kathayati-gṛhapate, atra kiṃcit satyaṃ kiṃcinmṛṣā | ārya, kiṃ satyaṃ kiṃ vā mṛṣā ? gṛhapate, yadanenoktaṃ putraṃ janayiṣyatīti, idaṃ satyaṃ kathayati | kulamuddyotayiṣyatītīdamapi satyam | agrajyotiriti saṃjñā | mandabhāgyaḥ sa sattvo jātamātra evāgninā kulaṃ dhakṣyati | yat kathayati-divyamānuṣīṃ śriyaṃ pratyanubhaviṣyatīti, idaṃ mṛṣā | gṛhapate, asti kaścit tvayā dṛṣṭo manuṣyabhūto divyamānuṣīṃ śriyaṃ pratyanubhavan ? yatkathayati-mama śāsane pravrajiṣyatīti, idaṃ satyam | yadā asya na bhaktaṃ na vastram, tadā niścayena śramaṇasya gautamasyāntike pravrajiṣyati | sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkariṣyatīti, idaṃ mṛṣā | śramaṇasyaiva tāvadgautamasya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ nāsti, prāgevāsya bhaviṣyatīti | subhadro viṣādamāpannaḥ kathayati-ārya, atra mayā kathaṃ pratipattavyamiti ? bhūrikaḥ kathayati-gṛhapate, vayaṃ pravrajitāḥ śamānuśikṣāḥ | tvameva jānīṣe | ityuktvā prakrāntaḥ | subhadraḥ saṃlakṣayati -sarvathā parityājyo'sau iti viditvā sa bhaiṣajyaṃ dātumārabdhaḥ | caramabhaviko'sau sattvaḥ | tadasya bhaiṣajyārthāya syāditi | sa tasyā vāmakukṣiṃ marditumārabdhaḥ | sa garbho dakṣiṇaṃ kukṣiṃ gataḥ | subhadro dakṣiṇakukṣiṃ marditumārabdhaḥ | sa vāmaṃ kukṣiṃ gataḥ | asthānametadanavakāśo yaccaramabhavikaḥ sattvo'ntarāducchidya kālaṃ kariṣyati aprāpte āśravakṣaye | sā gṛhapatipatnī kukṣiṇā mṛdyamānena vikroṣṭumārabdhā | prātiveśyaiḥ śrutam | te tvaritatvaritaṃ gatāḥ pṛcchanti-bhavantaḥ, kimiyaṃ gṛhapatipatnī virauti ? subhadraḥ kathayati-kukṣimatyeṣā | nūnamasyāḥ prasavakāla iti | te prakrāntāḥ | subhadraḥ saṃlakṣayati-na śakyamasyā atropasaṃkramaṃ kartum | araṇyaṃ nayāmīti | sā tenāraṇyaṃ nītvā tathopakrāntā yathā kālagatā | sa tāṃ pracchannaṃ gṛhamānīya suhṛtsaṃbandhibāndhavānāṃ prātiveśakānāṃ ca kathayati-bhavantaḥ, patnī me kālagateti | te vikroṣṭamārabdhāḥ | sā tairvikrośadbhirnīlapītalohitāvadātairvastraiḥ śibikāmalaṃkṛtya śītavanaṃ śmaśānamabhinirhṛtā | nirgranthaiḥ śrutam-te hṛṣṭatuṣṭapramuditāśchatrapatākā ucchrayitvā rājagṛhasya nagarasya rathyāvīthīcatvaraśṛṅgāṭake upāhiṇḍamānā ārocayanti-śṛṇvantu bhavantaḥ | śramaṇena gautamena subhadrasya gṛhapateḥ patnī vyākṛtā-putraṃ janayiṣyati, kulamuddyotayiṣyati, divyamānuṣīṃ śriyaṃ pratyanubhaviṣyati, mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkariṣyati | sā ca kālagatā śītavanaśmaśānamabhinirhṛtā | yasya tāvadvṛkṣamūlameva nāsti, kutastasya śākhāpatraphalaṃ bhaviṣyatīti ? atrāntare nāsti kiṃcidbuddhānāṃ bhagavatāmajñātamadṛṣṭamaviditamavijñātam | dharmatā khalu buddhānāṃ bhagavatāṃ mahākāruṇikānāṃ lokānugrahapravṛttānāmekārakṣāṇāṃ śamathavipaśyanāvihāriṇāṃ tridamathavastukuśalānāṃ caturoghottīrṇānāṃ [ catu ]rṛddhipādacaraṇatalasupratiṣṭhitānāṃ caturṣu saṃgrahavastuṣu dīrgharātrakṛtaparicayānāṃ caturvaiśāradyaviśāradānāṃ pañcāṅgaviprahīṇānāṃ pañcagatisamatikrāntānāṃ ṣaḍaṅgasamanvāgatānāṃ ṣaṭpāramitāparipūrṇānāmasaṃhatavihāriṇāṃ saptabodhyaṅgakusumāḍhyānāmaṣṭāṅgamārgadeśikānāṃ navānupūrvavihārasamāpattikuśalānāṃ daśabalavalināṃ daśadiksamāpūrṇayaśasāṃ daśaśatavaśavartiprativiśiṣṭānāṃ trī rātreḥ trirdivasasya buddhacakṣuṣā lokaṃ vyavalokya jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate-ko hīyate, ko vardhate, kaḥ kṛcchraprāptaḥ, kaḥ saṃkaṭaprāptaḥ, kaḥ saṃbādhaprāptaḥ, kaḥ kṛcchrasaṃkaṭasaṃbādhaprāptaḥ, ko'pāyanimnaḥ, ko'pāyapravaṇaḥ, ko'pāyaprāgbhāraḥ, kamahamapāyāduddhṛtya svarge mokṣe ca pratiṣṭhāpayeyam, kasyānavaropitāni kuśalamūlānyavaropayeyam, kasyāvaropitāni paripācayeyam, kasya paripakkāni vimocayeyam | āha ca-



apyevātikramedvelāṃ sāgaro makarālayaḥ |

na tu vaineyavatsānāṃ buddho velāmatikramet ||1|| iti ||



atha bhagavānanyatarasmin pradeśe smitamakārṣīt | dharmatā khalu yasmin samaye buddhā bhagavantaḥ smitaṃ prāviṣkurvanti, tasmin samaye nīlapītalohitāvadātā arciṣo mukhānniścārya kāścidadhastādgacchanti, kāścidupariṣṭādgacchanti | yā adhastādgacchanti, tāḥ saṃjīvaṃ kālasūtraṃ saṃghātaṃ rauravaṃ mahārauravaṃ tapanaṃ pratāpanamavīcimarbudaṃ nirarbudamaṭaṭaṃ hahavaṃ huhavamutpalaṃ padma mahāpadmaṃ narakaṃ gatvā ye uṣṇanarakāsteṣu śītībhūtā nipatanti | tena teṣāṃ sattvānāṃ kāraṇāviśeṣāḥ pratiprasrabdhāḥ | teṣāmevaṃ bhavati-kiṃ nu vayaṃ bhavanta itaścyutāḥ, āhosvidanyatropapannā iti | teṣāṃ prasādasaṃjananārthaṃ bhagavān nirmitaṃ visarjayati | teṣāṃ nirmitaṃ dṛṣṭvā evaṃ bhavati-na hyeva vayaṃ bhavanta itaścyutāḥ, nāpyanyatropapannāḥ | api tvayamapūrvadarśanaḥ sattvaḥ, asyānubhāvādasmākaṃ kāraṇāviśeṣāḥ pratiprasrabdhā iti | te nirmite cittamabhiprasādya tannarakavedanīyaṃ karma kṣapayitvā devamanuṣyeṣu pratisaṃdhiṃ gṛhṇanti yatra satyānāṃ bhājanabhūtā bhavanti | yā upariṣṭādgacchanti, tāścāturmahārājakāyikān devaṃstrāyastriṃśān yāmāṃstuṣitānnirmāṇaratīn paranirmitavaśavartino brahmakāyikān brahmapurohitān mahābrahmaṇaḥ parīttābhānapramāṇābhānābhāsvarān parīttaśubhānapramāṇaśubhān śubhakṛtsnānanabhrakān puṇyaprasavān bṛhatphalānatapān sudṛśān sudarśanānakaniṣṭhān devān gatvā anityaṃ duḥkhaṃ śūnyamanātmetyuddhoṣayanti | gāthādvayaṃ ca bhāṣante-



ārabhadhvaṃ niṣkrāmata yujyadhvaṃ buddhaśāsane |

dhunīta mṛtyunaḥ sainyaṃ naḍāgāramiva kuñjaraḥ ||2||



yo hyasmin dharmavinaye apramattaścariṣyati |

prahāya jātisaṃsāraṃ duḥkhasyāntaṃ kariṣyati ||3||



atha tā arciṣastrisāhasramahāsāhasraṃ lokadhātumanvāhiṇḍya bhagavantameva pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ samanugacchanti | bhagavata āsye'ntarhitāḥ | athāyuṣmānānandaḥ kṛtakarapuṭo bhagavantaṃ papraccha-



nānāvidho raṅgasahasracitro

vaktrāntarānniṣkasitaḥ kalāpaḥ |

avabhāsitā yena diśaḥ samantā-

ddivākareṇodayatā yathaiva ||4||



gāthāśca bhāṣate-

vigatodbhavā dainyamadaprahīṇā

buddhā jagatyuttamahetubhūtāḥ |

nākāraṇaṃ śaṅkhamṛṇālagauraṃ

smitamupadarśayanti jinā jitārayaḥ ||5||



tatkālaṃ svayamadhigamya dhīra buddhyā

śrotṝṇāṃ śramaṇa jinendra kāṅkṣitānām |

dhīrābhirmunivṛṣa vāgbhiruttamābhi-

rutpannaṃ vyapanaya saṃśayaṃ śubhābhiḥ ||6||



nākasmāllavaṇajalādrirājadhairyāḥ

saṃbuddhāḥ smitamupadarśayanti dhīrāḥ |

yasyārthe smitamupadarśayanti nāthā-

staṃ śrotuṃ samabhilaṣanti te janaughāḥ ||7|| iti ||



bhagavānāha-evametadānanda, evametat | nāhetupratyayamānanda tathāgatā arhantaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhāḥ smitaṃ prāviṣkurvanti | gaccha ānanda, bhikṣūṇāmārocaya-tathāgato bhikṣavaḥ śmaśānacārikāṃ gantukāmaḥ | yo yuṣmākamutsahate tathāgatena sārdhaṃ śmaśānacārikāṃ gantum, sa cīvarakāṇi gṛhṇātu | evaṃ bhadantetyāyuṣmānānando bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya bhikṣūṇāmārocayati- tathāgata āyuṣmantaḥ śmaśānacārikāṃ gantukāmaḥ | yo yuṣmākamutsahate tathāgatena sārdhaṃ śmaśānacārikāṃ gantum, sa cīvarakāṇi gṛhṇātu | evamāyuṣmanniti te bhikṣavaḥ sarve saṃśrutya bhagavatsakāśamupagatāḥ | atha bhagavān dānto dāntaparivāraḥ śāntaḥ śāntaparivāro mukto muktaparivāra āśvasta āśvastaparivāro vinīto vinītaparivāro'rhannarhatparivāro vītarāgo vītarāgaparivāraḥ prāsādikaḥ prāsādikaparivāro vṛṣabha iva gogaṇaparivṛto gajarāja iva kalabhagaṇaparivṛtaḥ siṃha iva daṃṣṭagaṇaparivṛto haṃsarāja iva haṃsagaṇaparivṛtaḥ suparṇīva pakṣigaṇaparivṛto vipra iva śiṣyagaṇaparivṛtaḥ suvaidya ivāturagaṇaparivṛtaḥ śūra iva yodhagaṇaparivṛto deśika ivādhvagaṇaparivṛtaḥ sārthavāha iva vaṇiggaṇaparivṛtaḥ śreṣṭhīva paurajanaparivṛtaḥ koṭṭarāja iva mantrigaṇaparivṛtaścakravartīva putrasahasraparivṛtaścandra iva nakṣatragaṇaparivṛtaḥ sūrya iva raśmisahasraparivṛto dhṛtarāṣṭra iva gandharvagaṇaparivṛto virūḍhaka iva kumbhāṇḍagaṇaparivṛto dhanada iva yakṣagaṇaparivṛto vemacitrīvāsuragaṇaparivṛtaḥ śakra iva tridaśagaṇaparivṛto brahmeva brahmakāyikaparivṛtaḥ stimita iva jalanidhiḥ sajala iva jaladharo vimada iva gajapatiḥ sudāntairindriyairasaṃkṣobhiteryāpathapracāro dvātriṃśatā mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇaiḥ samalaṃkṛto'śītyā cānuvyañjanairvirājitagātro vyāmaprabhālaṃkṛtamūrtiḥ sūryasahasrātirekaprabho jaṅgama iva ratnaparvataḥ samantato bhadrako daśabhirbalaiścaturbhirvaiśāradyaistribhirāveṇikaiḥ smṛtyupasthānairmahākaruṇayā ca samanvāgata ājñātakauṇḍinyāśvajidbāṣpamahānāmabhadrikaśāriputramaudgalyāyanakāśyapayaśaḥpūrṇaprabhṛtimahāśrāvakaiḥ parivṛto'nyena ca mahatā bhikṣusaṃghena anekaiśca prāṇiśatasahasraiḥ śītavanaṃ mahāśmaśānaṃ saṃprasthitaḥ | aṣṭādaśānuśaṃsā buddhacārikāyāmityanekāni devatāśatasahasrāṇi bhagavataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhato'nubaddhāni | śītavanānuguṇāśca vāyavo vāyitumārabdhāḥ ||



rājagṛhāt dvau bāladārakau brāhmaṇadārakaḥ kṣatriyadārakaśca bahirnirgatya krīḍataḥ | tayoḥ kṣatriyadārako'vagāḍhaśrāddho brāhmaṇadārako na tathā | sa brāhmaṇadārakaḥ kṣatriyadārakasya kathayati-vayasya, bhagavatā subhadrasya gṛhapateḥ patnī vyākṛtā-putraṃ janayiṣyati, kulamuddyotayiṣyati, divyamānuṣīṃ śriyaṃ pratyanubhaviṣyati, mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkariṣyatīti | sā ca mṛtā kālagatā śītavanaṃ śmaśānaṃ nirhṛtā-mā haiva bhagavatā bhāṣitaṃ vitathaṃ syāditi | sa kṣatriyadārako gāthāṃ bhāṣate-



sacandratāraṃ prapatedihāmbaraṃ

mahī saśailā savanā nabho vrajet |

mahodadhīnāmudakaṃ kṣayaṃ vraje-

nmaharṣayaḥ syurna mṛṣābhidhāyinaḥ ||8|| iti |



sa ca brāhmaṇadārakaḥ kathayati-vayasya, yadyevam, gacchāmaḥ śītavanaṃ mahāśmaśānaṃ paśyāmaḥ ? vayasya, gacchāmaḥ | tau saṃprasthitau | bhagavāṃśca rājagṛhānnirgataḥ | adrākṣīt sa kṣatriyadārako bhagavantaṃ dūrādeva | dṛṣṭvā ca punargāthāṃ bhāṣate -



anuddhato vigatakutūhalo muni -

ryathā vrajatyeṣa janaughasaṃvṛtaḥ |

niḥsaṃśayaṃ paragaṇavādimardano

nadasyate mṛgapatinādamuttamam || 9 ||



yathā hyamī śītavanonmukhotsukāḥ

pravānti vātā himapaṅkaśītalāḥ |

prayānti nūnaṃ bahavo divaukaso

nirīkṣituṃ śākyamunervikurvitam ||10 || iti |



rājñā bimbisāreṇa śrutam-bhagavatā subhadrasya gṛhapateḥ patnī vyākṛtā -putraṃ janayiṣyati, kulamuddyotayiṣyati, divyamānuṣīṃ śriyaṃ pratyanubhaviṣyati, mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkariṣyati | sā ca mṛtā kālagatā śītavanaṃ śmaśānamabhinirhṛtā | bhagavāṃśca saśrāvakasaṃghaḥ śītavanaṃ saṃprasthita iti | śrutvā ca punarasyaitadabhavat-na bhagavān nirarthakaṃ śītavanaṃ gacchati | nūnaṃ bhagavān subhadrasya gṛhapateḥ patnīmāgamya mahadvineyakāryaṃ kartukāmo bhaviṣyati | paśyāmīti | so'pyantaḥpurakumārāmātyapaurajānapadaparivṛto rājagṛhānnirgantumārabdhaḥ | adrākṣīt sa kṣatriyakumārako rājānaṃ māgadhaśreṇyaṃ bimbisāraṃ dūrādeva | dṛṣṭvā ca punargāthāṃ bhāṣate-



yathā hi śreṇyo magadhādhipo hyayaṃ

viniryayau rājagṛhāt sabāndhavaḥ |

pravartate me hṛdi niścitā mati-

rmahājanasyābhyudayo bhaviṣyati || 11 || iti |



janakāyena bhagavantaṃ dṛṣṭvā vivaramanupradattam | bhagavān smitonmukho mahājanamadhyaṃ praviṣṭaḥ | nirgranthā bhagavantaṃ smitonmukhaṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃlakṣayanti-yathā śramaṇo gautamaḥ smitonmukho mahājanamadhyaṃ praviṣṭaḥ, nūnamayaṃ bodhisattvo na kālagataḥ | taiḥ subhadro gṛhapatiruktaḥ-gṛhapate, nanvayaṃ sattvo mandabhāgyo na kālagata iti | sa kathayati-ārya yadyevam, kathamatra pratipattavyamiti ? te kathayanti-gṛhapate, vayaṃ śamāttaśikṣāḥ, tvameva jñāsyasīti | sa tāṃ patnīṃ citāyāmāropya dhmāpayitumārabdhaḥ | tasyāḥ sarvaḥ kāyo dagdhaḥ sthāpayitvā kukṣisāmantakam | tathāsau kukṣiḥ sphuṭitaḥ, padmaṃ prādurbhūtam | tasya coparipadmakarṇikāyāṃ kumāro niṣaṇṇo'bhirūpo darśanīyaḥ prāsādikaḥ | taṃ dṛṣṭvā anekāni prāṇiśatasahasrāṇi paraṃ vismayamupagatāni | nirgranthā nipātamadamānā naca(naṣṭa?) prabhāvāḥ saṃvṛttāḥ | tatra bhagavān subhadraṃ gṛhapatimāmantrayate-gṛhapate, gṛhāṇa kumāram | sa nirgranthānāṃ mukhamavalokitumārabdhaḥ | te kathayanti-gṛhapate, yadi prajvalitāmetāṃ citāṃ pravekṣyasi, sarveṇa sarvaṃ na bhaviṣyasīti | sa na pratigṛhṇāti | tatra bhagavān jīvakaṃ kumārabhūtamāmantrayate-gṛhāṇa jīvaka kumārakamiti | sa saṃlakṣayati-asthānamanavakāśo bhagavān māmasthāne niyokṣyati | gṛhṇāmīti | tena nirviśaṅkena citāṃ vigāhya gṛhītaḥ |



vigāhatastasya jinājñayā citāṃ

pratigṛhṇataścāgnigataṃ kumārakam |

jinaprabhāvānmahato hutāśanaḥ

kṣaṇena jāto himapaṅkaśītalaḥ ||12||



tato jīvakaṃ kumārabhūtamidamavocat-jīvaka, māsi kṣata upahato veti ? sa kathayati-rājakule'haṃ bhadanta jāto rājakule vṛddhaḥ | nābhijānāmi gośīrṣacandanasyāpīdṛśaṃ śaityaṃ yadbhagavatā adhiṣṭhitāyāścitāyāḥ | tatra bhagavān subhadraṃ gṛhapatimāmantrayate-gṛhāṇedānīṃ gṛhapate kumāramiti | sa mithyādarśanavihataḥ | tathāpi na saṃpratipadyate | nirgranthānāmeva mukhaṃ vyavalokayati | te kathayanti-gṛhapate, ayaṃ sattvo'tīva mandabhāgyo yo hi nāma sarvabhakṣeṇāpyagninā na dagdhaḥ | kiṃ bahunā ? yadyevaṃ gṛhaṃ praveśayasi, nīyatām | te gṛhamutsādayad bhaviṣyasi, tvaṃ ca prāṇairviyujyasa iti | nāsti ātmasamaṃ premeti | tenāsau na pratigṛhītaḥ | tatra bhagavān rājānaṃ bimbisāramāmantrayate-gṛhāṇa mahārāja kumāramiti | tena sasaṃbhrameṇa hastau prasārya gṛhītaḥ | tataḥ samantato nirīkṣya kathayati-bhagavan, kiṃ bhavatu asya dārakasya nāmeti | bhagavānāha-mahārāja, yasmādayaṃ dārako jyotirmadhyāllabdhaḥ, tasmādbhavatu dārakasya jyotiṣka iti nāmeti | tasya jyotiṣka iti nāmadheyaṃ vyavasthāpitam | tato bhagavatā tasya janakāyasyāśayānuśayaṃ dhātuṃ prakṛtiṃ ca jñātvā tādṛśī dharmadeśanā kṛtā, yāṃ śrutvā bahubhiḥ sattvaśatairmahān viśeṣo'dhigataḥ | kaiścicchrotāpattiphalaṃ sākṣātkṛtam, kaiścit sakṛdāgāmiphalam, kaiścidanāgāmiphalam, kaiścit sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam, kaiściduṣmagatāni kuśalamūlānyutpāditāni, kaiścinmūrdhānaḥ, kaiścit mṛdumadhyāḥ kṣāntayaḥ, kaiścicchrāvakabodhau cittānyutpāditāni, kaiścit pratyekabodhau, kaiścidanuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau, kaiściccharaṇagamanāni, kaiścicchikṣāpadāni | yadbhūyasā sā parṣadbuddhanimnā dharmapravaṇā saṃghaprāgbhārā vyavasthitā | jyotiṣko dārako rājñā bimbisāreṇa aṣṭābhyo dhātrībhyo'nupradatto dvābhyāmaṃsadhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ kṣīradhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ maladhātrībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ krīḍanikābhyāṃ dhātrībhyām | so'ṣṭābhirdhātrībhirunnīyate vardhate kṣīreṇa dadhnā navanītena sarpiṣā sarpimaṇḍena anyaiścottaptottaptairupakaraṇaviśeṣaiḥ | āśu vardhate hradasthamiva paṅkajam ||

na bhagavato bhāṣitaṃ vitatham | kathaṃ bhagavato bhāṣitaṃ vitathaṃ bhaviṣyati ? kiṃ tu tena svāmināpi asau tathā tathā upakrāntā, yathā kālagatā | sa dārako maharddhiko mahānubhāvaḥ | agninā na dagdhaḥ | adyāpi rājakule saṃvardhata iti | sa subhadrasya gṛhapateḥ sakāśaṃ gatvā kathayati-na yuktaṃ gṛhapate tvayā kṛtam | kiṃ kṛtam ? asmākaṃ sattvavatī bhaginī tvayā nirgranthavigrāhitena tathā tathā upakrāntā, yathā kālagatā | sa dārako maharddhiko mahānubhāvaḥ | agnināpi na dagdhaḥ | adyāpi rājakule saṃvardhate | tadgatametat | yadi tāvatkumāramānayasi, ityevaṃ kuśalam | no cedvayaṃ tvāṃ jñātimadhyādutkṣipāmaḥ | salokānāṃ (sālohitānāṃ ?) saṃkāraṃ pātayāmaḥ, rathyāvīthīcatvaraśṛṅgāṭakeṣu cāvaraṇaṃ niścārayāmaḥ-asmākaṃ bhaginī subhadreṇa gṛhapatinā praghātitā | strīghātako'yam | na kenacidābhāṣitavyamiti | rājakule ca te'narthaṃ kārayāma iti | sa śrutvā vyathitaḥ | yathaiṣa paribhāṣate, nūnamevaṃ karomīti viditvā rājñaḥ pādayornipatya kathayati-deva, mama jñātaya evaṃ paribhāṣante-yadi tāvat kumāramānayasītyevaṃ kuśalam, no cedānayasi, vayaṃ tvāṃ jñātimadhyādutkṣipāmaḥ, saṃkāraṃ pātayāmaḥ, rathyāvīthīcatvaraśṛṅgāṭakeṣu cāvaraṇaṃ niścārayāmaḥ-asmākaṃ bhaginī subhadreṇa gṛhapatinā praghātitā | strīghātako'yam | na kenacidābhāṣitavyamiti | rājakule ca te'narthaṃ kārayāma iti | tadarhasi jyotiṣkaṃ kumāraṃ dātumiti | rājā kathayati-gṛhapate, na mayā tvatsakāśāt jyotiṣkaḥ kumāro gṛhītaḥ, kiṃ tu bhagavatā mama nyastaḥ | yadi tvaṃ kumāreṇārthī, bhagavatsakāśaṃ gaccheti | sa bhagavatsakāśaṃ gataḥ | pādayornipatya kathayati-bhagavan, mama jñātaya evaṃ paribhāṣante-yadi tāvat kumāramānayasītyevaṃ kuśalam | no cedānayasi, vayaṃ tvāṃ jñātimadhyādutkṣipāmaḥ, saṃkāraṃ pātayāmaḥ, rathyāvīthīcatvaraśṛṅgāṭakeṣu cāvaraṇaṃ niścārayāmaḥ | asmākaṃ bhaginī subhadreṇa gṛhapatinā praghātitā | strīghātako'yam | na kenacidābhāṣitavya iti | rājakule cānarthaṃ kārayāma iti | tadarhasi jyotiṣkaṃ kumāraṃ dāpayitumiti | bhagavān saṃlakṣayati-yadi subhadro jyotiṣkaṃ kumāraṃ na labhate, sthānametadvidyate yaduṣṇaṃ rudhiraṃ chardayitvā kālaṃ kariṣyati | iti viditvā āyuṣmantamānandamāmantrayate-gaccha ānanda, rājānaṃ bimbisāraṃ madvacanenārogyaya, evaṃ ca vada-anuprayaccha mahārāja subhadrasya gṛhapaterjyotiṣkaṃ kumāram | yadi subhadro gṛhapatirjyotiṣkaṃ kumāraṃ na labhate, sthānametadvidyate yaduṣṇaṃ śoṇitaṃ chardayitvā kālaṃ kariṣyatīti | evaṃ bhadantetyāyuṣmānānando bhagavataḥ pratiśrutya yena rājā bimbisārastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya rājānaṃ bimbisārametadavocat-bhagavāṃste mahārāja ārogyayati, kathayati ca-anuprayaccha mahārāja subhadrasya gṛhapaterjyotiṣkaṃ kumāram | yadi subhadro gṛhapatirjyotiṣkaṃ kumāraṃ na labhate, sthānametadvidyate yat subhadro gṛhapatiruṣṇaṃ śoṇitaṃ chardayitvā kālaṃ kariṣyati | rājā kathayati-vande bhadantānanda buddhaṃ bhagavantam | yathā bhagavānājñāpayati tathā kariṣye | ārogyamityuktā āyuṣmānānandaḥ prakrāntaḥ | rājā bimbisāraḥ kathayati-gṛhapate, mayā ayaṃ kumāraḥ saṃvardhitaḥ | priyaśca me manāpaśca | samayato'haṃ muñcāmi, yadi māṃ divase divase triṣkālaṃ darśanāyopasaṃkrāmatīti | sa kathayati-deva upasaṃkramiṣyati | ko'nya upasaṃkramitavya iti ? sa rājñā sarvālaṃkāravibhūṣitaṃ kṛtvā hastiskandha āropya visarjitaḥ ||



ācaritametallokasya-na tāvat putrasya nāma prajñāyate yāvat pitā jīvati | yāvadapareṇa samayena subhadro gṛhapatiḥ kālagataḥ | jyotiṣkaḥ kumāraḥ svagṛhe pratiṣṭhitaḥ | sa buddhe'bhiprasanno dharme saṃghe'bhiprasannaḥ | buddhaṃ śaraṇaṃ gato dharmaṃ saṃghaṃ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ | tena yasmin pradeśe tena subhadreṇa patnī āghātitā, tasmin pradeśe vihāraṃ kārayitvā sarvopakaraṇasaṃpūrṇaścāturdiśāryabhikṣusaṃghāya niryātitaḥ | tathā sthavirairapi sūtrānta upanibaddham-bhagavān rājagṛhe viharati mṛditakukṣike dāva iti ||



subhadrasya gṛhapateḥ pauruṣeyā ye paṇyamādāya deśāntaraṃ gatāḥ, taiḥ śrutam-subhadro gṛhapatiḥ kālagataḥ | jyotiṣkaḥ kumāraḥ svagṛhe pratiṣṭhitaḥ | sa buddhe'bhiprasanno dharme saṃghe'bhiprasanno buddhaṃ śaraṇaṃ gato dharmaṃ saṃghaṃ śaraṇaṃ gata iti | teṣāṃ ca gośīrṣacandanamayaṃ pātraṃ saṃpannam | taistadratnānāṃ pūrayitvā jyotiṣkasya gṛhapateḥ prābhṛtamanupreṣitam | tena taddīrghe stambhe āropya sthāpitam | ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kāritam-nedaṃ kenacit viṣṭayā vā śītayā vā karkaṭakena vā gṛhītavyam | ya etacchramaṇo vā brāhmaṇo vā maharddhiko vā mahānubhāvaḥ ṛddhyā gṛhṇāti, tasyedaṃ yathāsukhamiti | tīrthyāḥ kalyamevotthāya tīrthyasparśanaṃ gacchanti | taistad dṛṣṭam | dṛṣṭvā ca punarjyotiṣkasya gṛhapateḥ kathayanti-gṛhapate, kimetaditi ? tena teṣāṃ vistareṇārocitam | te kathayanti-gṛhapate, tvaṃ śramaṇaśākyaputreṣvabhiprasannaḥ | te evaṃ grahīṣyantītyuktvā prakrāntāḥ | yāvat sthavirasthavirā bhikṣavo rājagṛhaṃ piṇḍāya praviṣṭāḥ | tairdṛṣṭvā tairapi jyotiṣko gṛhapatiḥ pṛṣṭaḥ-kimetaditi ? tena tathaiva vistareṇa samākhyātam | te kathayanti- gṛhapate, kiṃ pātramātrasyārthāyātmānaṃ saṃprakāśayāmaḥ ? uktaṃ bhagavatā-pracchannakalyāṇairbo bhikṣavo vihartavyaṃ dhūtapāpairityuktvā prakrāntāḥ | yāvadāyuṣmān daśabalaḥ kāśyapastamanuprāptaḥ | sa pṛcchati-gṛhapate, kimetaditi ? tena yathāvṛttamārocitam | āyuṣmān daśabalakāśyapaḥ saṃlakṣayati-yena mayā anādikālopacitaṃ kleśagaṇaṃ vāntaṃ tyaktaṃ charditaṃ pratinisṛṣṭam, taṃ māṃ gṛhapatistīrthikasādhāraṇayā ṛddhyā āhvayati | tadasya manorathaṃ pūrayāmīti | tena gajabhujasadṛśaṃ bāhumabhiprasārya tatpātraṃ gṛhītam | sa tadgṛhītvā vihāraṃ gato bhikṣubhirucyate -sthavira, kutastava gośīrṣacandanamayaṃ pātramiti ? tena yathāvṛttamārocitam | bhikṣavaḥ kathayanti-sthavira, kalpate tava pātramātrasyārthāya ṛddhiṃ vidarśayitumiti ? kathayati-āyuṣmantaḥ, kalpatu vā mā vā | kṛtamidānīm | kiṃ kriyatāmiti ? etat prakaraṇaṃ bhikṣavo bhagavata ārocayanti | bhagavānāha- na bhikṣuṇā āgārikasya purastāt ṛddhirvidarśayitavyā | darśayati, sātisāro bhavati | api tu catvāri pātrāṇi suvarṇamayaṃ rūpyamayaṃ vaiḍūryamayaṃ sphaṭikamayam | aparāṇyapi catvāri pātrāṇi rītimayaṃ tāmramayaṃ kaṃsamayamabhramayaṃ ca | tatra yāni pūrvakāṇi catvāri pātrāṇi, etānyanupasthāpitāni nopasthāpayitavyāni, upasthāpitāni visarjayitavyāni | yāni paścimāni catvāri pātrāṇi, etānyanupasthāpitāni nopasthāpayitavyāni, upasthāpitāni tu bhaiṣajyaśarāvaparibhogena paribhoktavyāni | api tvadhīṣṭāni te dve pātre āyasaṃ mṛṇmayam | yāvadapareṇa samayena jyotiṣkasya gṛhapaterdivyamānuṣī śrīḥ prādurbhūtā | antarā ca rājagṛhamantarā ca campāmatrāntare śulkaśālā | tasyāṃ śulkaśālikaḥ kālagataḥ | sa vyālayakṣeṣūpapannaḥ | tena putrāṇāṃ svapnadarśanaṃ dattam-putrāḥ, yūyametasmin sthāne yakṣasthānaṃ kārayata | tatra ca ghaṇṭāṃ baddhvā lambayata-yaḥ kaścit paṇyamaśulkayitvā gamiṣyati, sā ghaṇṭā tāvadviraviṣyati yāvadasau nivartya śulkaṃ dāpayitavyamiti (yiṣyatīti?) | taistaṃ svapnaṃ saṃbandhibāndhavānāṃ nivedya divasatithimuhūrtena tasmin pradeśe yakṣasthānaṃ kāritam | tatra ca ghaṇṭā baddhvā lambitā ||



campāyāmanyatamo brāhmaṇaḥ | tena sadṛśāt kulāt kalatramānītam | sā brāhmaṇī saṃlakṣayati-ayaṃ brāhmaṇo yaistairupāyairdhanopārjanaṃ karoti | ahaṃ bhakṣayāmi | na mama pratirūpaṃ yadahamakarmikā tiṣṭheyamiti | tayā vīthīṃ gatvā karpāsaḥ krītaḥ | taṃ parikarmayitvā ślakṣṇaṃ sūtraṃ kartitam | śobhanena kuvindena kārṣāpaṇasahasramūlyā yamalī vāyitā | tayā brāhmaṇa uktaḥ-brāhmaṇa, asyā yamalyāḥ kārṣāpaṇasahasraṃ mūlyam | gṛhītvā vīthīṃ gaccha | yadi kaścit yācati, kārṣāpaṇasahasreṇa dātavyā, no cedapattanaṃ ghoṣayitvā anyatra gantavyamiti | sa tāṃ gṛhītvā vīthīṃ gataḥ | na kaścit kārṣāpaṇasahasreṇa gṛhṇāti | so'pattanaṃ ghoṣayitvā tāṃ yamalīṃ chatradaṇḍe prakṣipya sārthena sārdhaṃ rājagṛhaṃ saṃprasthito yāvadanupūrveṇa śulkaśālāmanuprāptaḥ | śulkaśālikena sārthaḥ śulkitaḥ | sa śulkaṃ dattvā saṃprasthitaḥ | ghaṇṭā raṭitumārabdhā | śaulkikāḥ kathayanti-bhavantaḥ, yatheyaṃ ghaṇṭā raṇati, nūnaṃ sārtho na nipuṇaṃ śulkitaḥ | bhūyaḥ śulkayāma iti | tairasau sārthaḥ punaḥ pratinivartya śulkitaḥ | nāsti kiṃcidaśulkitam | ghaṇṭā raṭatyeva | tairasau sārtho bhūyaḥ pratinivartya pratyavekṣitaḥ | nāstyeva kiṃcit | sārthikā avadhyātumārabdhāḥ-kiṃ yūyamasmān mūṣitukāmā yena bhūyo bhūyaḥ pratinivartayadhvamiti ? tairasau sārtho dvidhā kṛtvā muktaḥ | yeṣāṃ madhye sa brāhmaṇo nāsti, te'tikrāntāḥ | anyeṣāṃ gacchatāṃ sā ghaṇṭā tathaiva raṭitumārabdhā | taiste punaḥ pratyavekṣitāḥ | evaṃ tāvat dvidhākṛtāḥ, yāvat sa caiko brāhmaṇo'vasthita iti | sa tairgṛhītaḥ | sa kathayati-pratyavekṣata yadi mama kiṃcidastīti | taiḥ sarvataḥ pratyavekṣya muktaḥ | sā ghaṇṭā raṭatyeva | tairasau brāhmaṇaḥ pratinivartyoktaḥ-bho brāhmaṇa kathaya, naiva śulkaṃ dāpayāmaḥ | kiṃ tu devasyaiva sānnidhyaṃ jñātaṃ bhavatīti | kathayati-satyaṃ na dāpayatha ? na dāpayāmaḥ | tena cchatradaṇḍādapanīya sā yamalī darśitā | te paraṃ vismayamāpannāḥ-bhavantaḥ, īdṛśamapi devasya sānnidhyamiti | taistata ekaṃ vastramuddhāṭya devaḥ prāvṛtaḥ | brāhmaṇaḥ kathayati-yūyaṃ kathayatha śulkaṃ na dāpayāma iti | idānīṃ sarvasvamapaharatha iti | te kathayanti-brāhmaṇa, nāsmābhirgṛhītam | api devasyaitat sānnidhyamiti kṛtvā asmābhiḥ prāvṛtaḥ | gṛhītvā gaccheti | sa taṃ punargṛhītvā punaśchatranāḍikāyāṃ prakṣipya prakrāntaḥ | anupūrveṇa rājagṛhamanuprāptaḥ | sa vīthyāṃ prasāryāvasthitaḥ | tatrāpi tāṃ na kaścit kārṣāpaṇasahasreṇa yācate | sa rājagṛhamapyapattanaṃ ghoṣayitumārabdhaḥ | jyotiṣkaśca kumāro rājakulānniṣkramya hastiskandhābhirūḍho vīthīmadhyena svagṛhaṃ gacchati | tena śrutam | sa kathayati- bhavantaḥ, kimarthaṃ brāhmaṇo'pattanaṃ ghoṣayati ? śabdayatainam | pṛcchāma iti | sa taiḥ śabditaḥ | jyotiṣkeṇoktaḥ-bho brāhmaṇa, kimarthaṃ tvaṃ apattanaṃ ghoṣayasi ? gṛhapate, asyā yamalyāḥ kārṣāpaṇasahasraṃ mūlyam | na ca kaścidyācata iti | sa kathayati-ānaya, paśyāmaḥ | tenopadarśitā | jyotiṣkaḥ kathayati-astyetadeva | kiṃ tu atraikaṃ vastraṃ paribhuktakam | ekamaparibhuktakam | yadaparibhuktam, asya pañcakārṣāpaṇaśatāni mūlyam | yattu paribhuktakam, asyārdhatṛtīyāni | brāhmaṇaḥ kathayati-kimetadevaṃ bhaviṣyati? jyotiṣkaḥ kathayati- brāhmaṇa, tava pratyakṣīkaromi | paśyeti | tenāsau aparibhukta uparivihāyasā kṣiptaḥ | vitānaṃ kṛtvā avasthitaḥ | paribhuktaḥ kṣiptaḥ | kṣiptamātraka eva patitaḥ | brāhmaṇo dṛṣṭvā paraṃ vismayamāpannaḥ | kathayati-gṛhapate, maharddhikastvaṃ mahānubhāva iti | jyotiṣkaḥ kathayati-brāhmaṇa, punaḥ paśyainaṃ yo'sau aparibhuktaka iti, sa kaṇṭakavāṭasyopariṣṭāt kṣipto'sajjamāno gataḥ | so'nyaḥ kṣiptaḥ kaṇṭake lagnaḥ | sa brāhmaṇo bhūyasyā mātrayā abhiprasannaḥ kathayati-gṛhapate, maharddhikastvaṃ mahānubhāvaḥ | yat tavābhipretaṃ tatprayaccheti | sa kathayati-brāhmaṇa, atithistvam | tavaiva pūjā kṛtā bhavati | sahasrameva prayacchāmīti | tena tasya kārṣāpaṇasahasraṃ dattam | brāhmaṇastamādāya prakrāntaḥ | jyotiṣkeṇa tato yaḥ paribhuktakaḥ sa dārakāya dattaḥ, aparibhuktakastu snānaśāṭakaḥ kṛtaḥ | yāvadapareṇa samayena rājā bimbisāra upariprāsādatalagato'mātyagaṇaparivṛtastiṣṭhati | jyotiṣkasya sa snānaśāṭaka upari gṛhasyābhyavakāśe śoṣito vāyunā hriyamāṇo rājño bimbisārasyopari patitaḥ | rājā kathayati- bhavantaḥ, rājārhamidaṃ vastram | kuta etaditi ? | te kathayanti- deva, śrūyate rājño māndhātuḥ saptāhaṃ hiraṇyavarṣaṃ patitam | devasyāpi vastravarṣaḥ patitumārabdham | nacirāddhiraṇyavarṣaḥ patiṣyatīti | rājā kathayati-bhavantaḥ, jyotiṣko gṛhapatirbhagavatā vyākṛto divyamānuṣīṃ śriyaṃ pratyanubhaviṣyatīti | idaṃ ca divyaṃ vastramākāśāt patitam | sthāpayata | tasyaivāgatasya dāsyāmīti | te caivamālāpaṃ kurvanti, jyotiṣkaścāgataḥ | rājā kathayati-kumāra, tvaṃ bhagavatā vyākṛto divyamānuṣīṃ śriyaṃ pratyanuibhaviṣyatīti | mama cedaṃ divyaṃ vastramākāśāt patitam | gṛhāṇeti | tena hastaḥ prasāritaḥ | deva ānaya, paśyāmīti | sa nirīkṣitumārabdho yāvat paśyatyātmīyaṃ snānaśāṭakam | sa vismṛtya kathayati-deva, madīyo'yaṃ snānaśāṭako vāyunopakṣipta ihāgata iti | kumāra, tava divyamānuṣyakī śrīḥ prādurbhūtā ? deva, prādurbhūtā | kumāra, yadyevam, kimarthaṃ māṃ na nimantrayasi ? deva, nimantrito bhava | gaccha, bhaktaṃ sajjīkuru | deva, yasya divyamānuṣī śrīḥ prādurbhūtā, kiṃ tena sajjīkartavyam ? nanu sajjīkṛtameva, gaccheti | sa jyotiṣkasya gṛhaṃ gataḥ | rājā bāhyaṃ parijanaṃ dṛṣṭvā indriyāṇyutkṣipati | deva, kimarthamindriyāṇyutkṣipasi | sa kathayati-kumāra, vadhūjano'yamiti kṛtvā | deva nāyaṃ vadhūjanaḥ, bāhyo'yaṃ parijanaḥ | sa paraṃ vismayamāpannaḥ | punarmadhyaṃ janaṃ dṛṣṭvā indriyāṇyutkṣiptumārabdhaḥ | tathaiva pṛcchati | rājā api tathaiva kathayati | jyotiṣkaḥ kathayati-deva, ayamapi na vadhūjanaḥ, kiṃ tu madhyo'yaṃ janaḥ | sa bhūyasyā mātrayā paraṃ vismayamāpannaḥ | tasya madhyamāyāṃ dvāraśālāyāṃ maṇibhūmiruparacitā | tasyāṃ matsyā udakapūrṇāyāmiva yantrayogenopari bhramanto dṛśyante | rājā praveṣṭukāmo vāpīti kṛtvopānahau moktumārabdhaḥ | jyotiṣkaḥ kathayati-deva kasyārthe upānahau apanayasīti ? sa kathayati-kumāra, pānīyamuttarttavyamiti | jyotiṣkaḥ kathayati- deva nedaṃ pānīyam, maṇibhūmireṣā | sa kathayati-kumāra, ime matsyā upari bhramantaḥ paśyanti | deva yantrayogenaite paribhramanti | sa na śraddhatte | tenāṅgulimudrā kṣiptā | sā raṇaraṇāśabdena bhūmau patitā | tato vismayamāpannaḥ praviśya siṃhāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ | vadhūjanaḥ pādābhivandana upasaṃkrāntaḥ | tāsāmaśrupāto jātaḥ | rājā kathayati-kumāra, kasmādayaṃ vadhūjano roditi ? deva nāyaṃ roditi, kiṃ tu devasya kāṣṭhadhūmena vastrāṇi dhūpitāni, tena āsāmaśrupāto jāta iti | rājā tatra divyamānuṣyā śriyā upacaryamāṇaḥ pramatto na niṣkrāmati | rājakṛtyāni rājakaraṇīyāni parihātumārabdhāni | amātyairajātaśatruḥ kumāro'bhibhūtaḥ-kumāra, devo jyotiṣkasya gṛhaṃ praviśya pramattaḥ | gaccha, nivedayeti | tena gatvā uktaḥ-deva, kimatra praviśyāvasthitaḥ ? amātyāḥ kathayanti-rājakṛtyāni rājakaraṇīyāni parihīyanta iti | sa kathayati-kumāra, na śaknoṣi tvamekaṃ divasaṃ rājyaṃ kārayitum ? kiṃ devo jānīte-mamaiko divasaḥ praviṣṭasya? adya devasya saptamo divaso vartate | rājā jyotiṣkasya mukhaṃ nirīkṣya kathayati-kumāra satyam ? deva satyam | saptama eva divaso vartate | kumāra, kathaṃ rātrirjñāyate divaso vā ? deva, puṣpāṇāṃ saṃkocavikāsānmaṇīnāṃ jvalanājvalanayogācchakunīnāṃ ca kūjanākūjanāt | santi tāni puṣpāṇi yāni rātrau vikasanti, divā mlāyanti ? santi yāni divā vikasanti rātrau mlāyanti ? santi te maṇayo ye rātrau jvalanti, na divā ? santi te divā jvalanti, na rātrau ? santi te śakunayo ye rātrau kūjanti, na divā ? santi ye divā kūjanti, na rātrau ? rājā vismayamāpannaḥ kathayati-kumāra, avitathavādī bhagavān | yathā tvaṃ bhagavatā vyākṛtastathaiva nānyathetyuktvā jyotiṣkagṛhāt niṣkrāntaḥ | ajātaśatrukumāreṇa jyotiṣkasantako maṇirapahṛtya dārakasya haste dattaḥ | tena yata eva gṛhītastatraiva gatvāvasthitaḥ | ajātaśatruḥ kathayati-dāraka, ānaya taṃ maṇiṃ paśyāmīti | sa muṣṭiṃ vighāṭya kathayati-kumāra, na jāne kutra gata iti | sa taṃ tāḍayitumārabdhaḥ | jyotiṣkaḥ kathayati-kumāra, kimarthamenaṃ tāḍayasi ? gṛhapate, ahaṃ cauraḥ, eṣa mahācauraḥ | mayā tvadīyo maṇirapahṛtaḥ, so'pyanenāpahṛta iti | sa kathayati-kumāra, na tvayā apahṛto nāpyanena, api tu yata eva tvayā gṛhītastatraiva gatvā avasthitaḥ | api tu kumāra, svakaṃ te gṛham | yāvadbhirmaṇibhiranyena vā prayojanaṃ tāvadgṛhāṇa yathāsukhamiti | sa pratibhinnakaḥ saṃlakṣayate-yadā pituratyayādrājā bhaviṣyāmi, tadā grahīṣyāmīti | yadā ajātaśatruṇā devadattavigrāhitena pitā dhārmiko dharmarājo jīvitād vyaparopitaḥ, svayameva ca paṭṭaṃ baddhvā pratiṣṭhitaḥ, tadā tena jyotiṣko'bhihitaḥ-gṛhapate, tvaṃ mama bhrātā bhavasi | gṛhaṃ bhājayāma iti | sa saṃlakṣayati-yena pitā dhārmiko dharmarājaḥ praghātitaḥ, sa māṃ marṣayatīti kuta etat ? nūnamayaṃ madgṛhamāgacchatu, kāmaṃ prayacchāmīti viditvā kathayati-deva, vibhaktameva, kimatra vibhaktavyam ? madīyaṃ gṛhamāgaccha, ahaṃ tvadīyaṃ gṛhamāgacchāmīti | ajātaśatruḥ kathayati-śobhanam | evaṃ kurui | sa tasya gṛhaṃ gataḥ | jyotiṣko'pyajātaśatrorgṛhaṃ gataḥ | sā śrīstasmādgṛhādantarhitā, yatra jyotiṣkastatraiva gatā | evaṃ yāvat saptavārānantarhitā prādurbhūtā ca | ajātaśatruḥ saṃlakṣayate-evamapi mayā na śakitaṃ jyotiṣkasya maṇīnapahartum | anyadupāyaṃ karomi | tena dhūrtapuruṣāḥ prayuktāḥ-gacchata, jyotiṣkasya gṛhānmaṇīnapaharateti | te hi śīṭākarkaṭakaprayogenābhiroḍhumārabdhāḥ | te'ntaḥpurikayā upariprāsādatalagatayā dṛṣṭāḥ | tayā dhūrtadhūrtakā iti nādo muktaḥ | jyotiṣkeṇa śrutam | tenāśayato vāgniścāritā-tiṣṭhantu dhūrtakā iti | teṣāṃ yo yatrābhirūḍhaḥ sa tatraivāsthito yāvat prabhātā rajanī saṃvṛttā | mahājanakāyena dṛṣṭvāḥ | te kathayanti- bhavantaḥ, anena kalirājena pitā dhārmiko dharmarājo jīvitād vyaparopitaḥ | idānīṃ gṛhāṇyapi moṣayati | tatkiṃ na me moṣiṣyata iti ? purakṣobho jātaḥ | ajātaśatruṇā jyotiṣkasya dūto'nupreṣitaḥ - muñcata mamāyaṃ khalīkāra iti | jyotiṣkeṇāśayato vāg niścāritā-gacchantu dhūrtakā iti | te gatāḥ | jyotiṣkaḥ saṃlakṣayate-yena nāma pitā jīvitād vyaparopitaḥ, sa māṃ na praghātayiṣyatīti kuta etat ? sarvathā ahaṃ bhagavatā vyākṛtaḥ-mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkariṣyatīti | gacchāmi, pravrajāmīti | tena sarvaṃ dhanajātaṃ dīnānāthakṛpaṇebhyo dattam | adhanāḥ sadhanā vyavasthāpitāḥ | atha jyotiṣko gṛhapatiḥ suhṛtsaṃbandhibāndhavānavalokya yena bhagavāṃstenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya bhagavataḥḥ pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ | ekāntaniṣaṇṇo jyotiṣko gṛhapatirbhagavantamidamavocat-labheyāhaṃ bhadanta svākhyāte dharmavinaye pravrajyāmupasaṃpadaṃ bhikṣubhāvam | careyamahaṃ bhagavato'ntike brahmacaryamiti | sa bhagavatā ehibhikṣukayā ābhāṣitaḥ-ehi bhikṣo, cara brahmacaryamiti | bhagavato vācāvasānameva muṇḍaḥ saṃvṛttaḥ | saṃghāṭīprāvṛtaḥ pātrakaravyagrahastaḥ saptāhāvaropitakeśaśmaśrurvarṣaśatopasaṃpannasya bhikṣorīryāpathenāvasthitaḥ |



ehīti coktaḥ sa tathāgatena

muṇḍaśca saṃghāṭiparītadehaḥ |

sadyaḥ praśāntendriya eva tasthā-

vupasthito buddhamanorathena ||14||



tasya bhagavatā avavādo dattaḥ | tenodyacchamānena vyāyacchamānena idameva pañcagaṇḍakaṃ saṃsāracakraṃ calācalaṃ viditvā sarvasaṃskāragatīḥ śatanapatanavikiraṇavidhvaṃsanadharmatayā parāhatya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam | arhan saṃvṛttastraidhātukavītarāgaḥ samaloṣṭakāñcana ākāśapāṇitalasamacitto vāsīcandanakalpo vidyāvidāritāṇḍakośo vidyābhijñāpratisaṃvitprāpto bhavalābhalobhasatkāraparāṅbhukhaḥ | sendropendrāṇāṃ devānāṃ pūjyo mānyo'bhivādyaśca saṃvṛttaḥ ||



bhikṣavaḥ saṃśayajātāḥ sarvasaṃśayacchettāraṃ buddhaṃ bhagavantaṃ papracchuḥ-kiṃ bhadanta āyuṣmatā jyotiṣkeṇa karma kṛtaṃ yena citāmāropitaḥ, divyamānuṣī śrīḥ prādurbhūtā, bhagavataḥ śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtamiti ? bhagavānāha-jyotiṣkeṇaiva bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni labdhasaṃhārāṇi pariṇatapratyayānyoghavatpratyupasthitānyavaśyaṃbhāvīni | jyotiṣkeṇa karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni | ko'nyaḥ pratyanubhaviṣyati ? na bhikṣavaḥ karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni pṛthivīdhātau vipacyante, nābdhātau, na tejodhātau, na vāyudhātau, api tūpātteṣveva skandhadhātvāyataneṣu karmāṇi kṛtānyupacitāni vipacyante śubhānyaśubhāni ca |



na praṇaśyanti karmāṇi kalpakoṭiśatairapi |

sāmagrīṃ prāpya kālaṃ ca phalanti khalu dehinām ||15||





bhūtapūrvaṃ bhikṣava ekanavatikalpe vipaśyī nāma śāstā loka udapādi tathāgato'rhan samyaksaṃbuddho vidyācaraṇasaṃpannaḥ sugato lokavidanuttaraḥ puruṣadamyasārathiḥ śāstā devamanuṣyāṇāṃ buddho bhagavān | dvāṣaṣṭibhikṣusahasraparivāro janapadacārikāṃ caran bandhumatīṃ rājadhānīmanuprāpto bandhumatyāṃ viharati sma bandhumatīyake dāve | tena khalu samayena bandhumatyāṃ rājadhānyāṃ bandhumān nāma rājā rājyaṃ kārayati ṛddhaṃ ca sphītaṃ ca kṣemaṃ ca subhikṣaṃ ca ākīrṇabahujanamanuṣyaṃ ca praśāntakalikalahaḍimbaḍamaraṃ taskararogāpagataṃ śālīkṣugomahiṣīsaṃpannam | dhārmiko dharmarājā dharmeṇa rājyaṃ kārayati | tasyānaṅgaṇo nāma gṛhapatirāḍhyo mahādhano mahābhogo vistīrṇaviśālaparigraho vaiśravaṇadhanasamudito vaiśravaṇadhanapratispardhī | sa saṃlakṣayate-bahuśo mayā vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddho'ntargṛhe upanimantrya bhojitaḥ | na tu kadācit traimāsīṃ sarvopakaraṇaiḥ pravāritaḥ | yannvahaṃ vipaśyinaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhaṃ traimāsīṃ sarvopakaraṇaiḥ pravārayeyam | iti viditvā yena vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya vipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ | ekāntaniṣaṇṇamanaṅgaṇaṃ gṛhapatiṃ vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddho dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati | anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm | athānaṅgaṇo gṛhapatirūtthāyāsanādekāṃsamuttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhastenāñjaliṃ praṇamya vipaśyinaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhamidavocat-adhivāsayatu me bhagavān traimāsīṃ cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkāraiḥ sārdhaṃ bhikṣusaṃgheneti | adhivāsayati vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddho'naṅgaṇasya gṛhapatestūṣṇīṃbhāvena | athānaṅgaṇo gṛhapatirbhagavatastūṣṇībhāvenādhivāsanāṃ viditvā vipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya pādau śirasā vanditvā utthāyāsanāt prakrāntaḥ | aśrauṣīdbandhumān rājā-vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddho dvāṣaṣṭibhikṣusahasraparivāro janapadacārikāṃ caran bandhumatīmanuprāpto bandhumatyāṃ viharati bandhumatīye dāve iti | śrutvā ca punarasyaitadabhavat-bahuśo mayā bhagavānantargṛhe upanimantrya bhojitaḥ | na tu kadācit traimāsīṃ sarvopakaraṇaiḥ pravāritaḥ | yannvahaṃ vipaśyinaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhaṃ sarvopakaraṇaiḥ pravārayeyam | iti viditvā yena vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya vipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya pādau śirasā vanditvā ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ | ekāntaniṣaṇṇaṃ bandhumantaṃ rājānaṃ bhagavān dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati | anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samādāpya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya tūṣṇīm | atha bandhumān rājā utthāyāsanādekāṃsamuttarāsaṅgaṃ kṛtvā yena vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhastenāñjaliṃ praṇamya vipaśyinaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhamidamavocat-adhivāsayatu me bhagavāṃstraimāsīṃ cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkāraiḥ sārdhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghena | upanimantrito'smi mahārāja tvatprathamato'naṅgaṇena gṛhapatinā | adhivāsayatu bhagavān, ahaṃ tathā kariṣye yathā anaṅgaṇo gṛhapatirājñāsyati | sacet te mahārāja anaṅgaṇo gṛhapatiranujānīte, evaṃ te'hamadhivāsayāmi | atha bandhumān rājā vipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya pādau śirasā vanditvā utthāyāsanāt prakrānto yena svaṃ nirveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | bandhumān rājā anaṅgaṇaṃ gṛhapatiṃ dūtena prakrośyedamavocat-yatkhalu gṛhapate jānīyāt-ahaṃ tvatprathamato vipaśyinaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhaṃ bhojayāmi, tataḥ paścāt tavāpi na duṣkaraṃ bhaviṣyati vipaśyinaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhaṃ bhojayitumiti | sa kathayati-deva, mayā vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhastvatprathamata upanimantritaḥ | ahameva bhojayāmi | rājā kathayati-gṛhapate, yadyapyevam, tathāpi tvaṃ mama viṣayanivāsī | nārhāmyahaṃ tvatprathamato bhojayitum ? deva, yadyapyahaṃ tava viṣayanivāsī, tathāpi yena pūrvanimantritaḥ sa eva bhojayati | nātra devasya nirbandho yuktaḥ | na te gṛhapate kāmakāraṃ dadāmi | api tu yo bhaktottarikayā jeṣyati, so'vaśiṣṭaṃ kālaṃ bhojayiṣyati | tathā bhavatu ityanaṅgaṇo gṛhapatiḥ pratyaśrauṣīt | tathā anaṅgaṇo gṛhapatistāmeva rātriṃ śuciṃ praṇītaṃ khādanīyaṃ bhojanīyaṃ samudānīya kālyamevotthāyodakamaṇīn pratiṣṭhāpya bhagavato dūtena kālamārocayati-samayo bhadanta, sajjaṃ bhaktaṃ yasyedānīṃ bhagavān kālaṃ manyate | atha vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto yenānaṅgaṇasya gṛhapaterbhaktābhisārastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya purastādbhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ | athānaṅgaṇo gṛhapatiḥ sukhopaniṣaṇṇaṃ buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ viditvā śucinā praṇītena khādanīyabhojanīyena svahastaṃ saṃtarpayati saṃpravārayati | anekaparyāyeṇa śucinā praṇītena khādanīyabhojanīyena svahastaṃ saṃtarpya saṃpravārya bhagavantaṃ bhuktavantaṃ viditvā dhautahastamapanītapātraṃ nīcataramāsanaṃ gṛhītvā bhagavataḥ purastānniṣaṇṇo dharmaśravaṇāya | atha vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddho'naṅgaṇaṃ gṛhapatiṃ dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayati samādāpayati samuttejayati saṃpraharṣayati | anekaparyāyeṇa dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśya samuttejya saṃpraharṣya prakrāntaḥ | evaṃ bandhumatā rājñā bhojitaḥ | eṣa eva grantho vistareṇa kartavyaḥ | na kkacidbhaktottarikayā parājayati | tato bandhumān rājā kare kapolaṃ dattvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ | amātyāḥ kathayanti-deva, kasmāt tvaṃ kare kapolaṃ dattvā cintāparastiṣṭhasīti ? sa kathayati-bhavantaḥ, kathamahaṃ na cintāparastiṣṭhāmi yo'haṃ mama viṣayanivāsinaṃ kuṭumbinaṃ na śaknomi bhaktottarikayā parājayitum ? te kathayanti, deva, tasya gṛhapateḥ kāṣṭhaṃ nāsti kāṣṭhavikrayo vidhāryatāmiti | rājñā ghaṇṭāvaghoṣaṇaṃ kāritam | bhavantaḥ, na kenacit madviṣayanivāsinā kāṣṭhaṃ vikretavyam | yo vikrīṇīte, tena madviṣaye na vastavyamiti | anaṅgaṇo gṛhapatirgandhakāṣṭhairbhaktaṃ sādhayitumārabdhaḥ | sugandhatailena ca vastrāṇi tīmayitvā khādyakānyullāḍayitum | surabhiṇā gandhena sarvā bandhumatī nagarī sphuṭā saṃvṛttā | bandhumān rājā pṛcchati-bhavantaḥ, kuta eṣa manojñagandha iti ? tairvistareṇa samākhyātam | sa kathayati-ahamapyevaṃ karomi | kiṃ mama vibhavo nāstīti ? amātyāḥ kathayanti-deva, kasyārthe evaṃ kriyate ? ayaṃ gṛhapatiraputro nacirāt kālaṃ kariṣyati | devasyaiva sarvaṃ santasvāpateyaṃ bhaviṣyati | kāṣṭhavikrayo'nujñāsyatāmiti | tena kāṣṭhavikrayo'nujñātaḥ | anaṅgaṇena gṛhapatinā śrutam-rājñā kāṣṭhavikrayo'nujñāta iti | tena cittaṃ pradūṣya kharā vāg niścāritā-tāvanme bhaktakāṣṭhamasti, yenāhaṃ enaṃ sahāmātyaṃ citāmāropya dhmāpayāmīti | rājā kare kapolaṃ dattvā cintāparo vyavasthitaḥ | amātyāḥ kathayanti-deva, kimarthaṃ kare kapolaṃ dattvā cintāparastiṣṭhasīti ? tena vistareṇa samākhyātam | te kathayanti-deva, alaṃ viṣādena | vayaṃ tathā kariṣyāmo yathā devaścānaṅgaṇaṃ gṛhapatiṃ parājayatīti | tairaparasmin divase bandhumatī rājadhānī apagatapāṣāṇaśarkarakaṭhalyā vyavasthāpitā candanavāripariṣiktā surabhidhūpaghaṭikopanibaddhā āmuktapaṭṭadāmakalāpā ucchritadhvajapatākā nānāpuṣpāvakīrṇā nandanavanodyānasadṛśā | tatpratispardhaśobhāvibhūṣito maṇḍavāṭaḥ kāritaḥ | tasmin nānāratnavibhūṣitāsanavasanasaṃpannaśobhāsanaprajñaptiḥ kāritā | mṛduviśadasurabhigandhasaṃpanno vividhabhaktavyañjanasahito divyasudhāmanojñasaṃkāśastrailokyaguroranurūpa āhāra upasamanvāhṛtaḥ | tato bandhumato rājño niveditam-deva, īdṛśī nagaraśobhā īdṛśaścāhāraḥ | prāmodyamutpādayeti | bandhumān rājā dṛṣṭvā paraṃ vismayamāpannaḥ | tato vismayāvarjitacittasaṃtatirvipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya dūtena kālamārocayati-samayo bhadanta, sajjaṃ bhaktaṃ yasyedānīṃ bhagavān kālaṃ manyata iti | atha vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ pūrvāhṇe nivāsya pātracīvaramādāya bhikṣugaṇaparivṛto bhikṣusaṃghapuraskṛto yena bandhumato rājño bhaktābhisārastenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya purastādbhikṣusaṃghasya prajñapta evāsane niṣaṇṇaḥ | bandhumato rājño maṅgalyābhiṣeko hastināgo vipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya śataśalākaṃ chatramupari mūrghno dhārayati, avaśiṣṭā hastināgā bhikṣūṇām | bandhumato rājño'gramahiṣī vipaśyinaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhaṃ sauvarṇena maṇivālavyajanena vījayati, avaśiṣṭā antaḥpurikā avaśiṣṭānāṃ bhikṣūṇām | anaṅgaṇena gṛhapatinā avacarakaḥ puruṣaḥ preṣitaḥ-gaccha bhoḥ puruṣa, paśya kīdṛśenāhāreṇa bandhumān rājā buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayatīti | sa gatastāṃ vibhūtiṃ dṛṣṭvā vismayāvarjitamanāstatraivāvasthitaḥ | evaṃ dvitīyaḥ, tṛtīyaḥ preṣitaḥ | so'pi tatraiva gatvā avasthitaḥ | tato'naṅgaṇo gṛhapatiḥ svayameva gataḥ | so'pi tāṃ vibhūtiṃ dṛṣṭvā paraṃ viṣādamāpannaḥ saṃlakṣayati-śakyamanyat saṃpādayitum | kiṃ tu hastināmantaḥpurasya ca kuto mama vibhavaḥ ? iti viditvā niveśanaṃ gato dauvārikaṃ puruṣamāmantrayate-bhoḥ puruṣa, yadi kaścidyācanaka āgacchati, sa yat prārthayate taddātavyam, no tu praveśaḥ | ityuktvā śokāgāraṃ praviśya avasthitaḥ | śakrasya devendrasyādhastāt jñānadarśanaṃ pravartate | sa saṃlakṣayati-ye kecilloke dakṣiṇīyāḥ, vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhasteṣāmagraḥ, dānapatīnāmapyanaṅgaṇo gṛhapatiḥ | sāhāyyamasya kalpayitavyam | iti viditvā kauśiko brāhmaṇaveṣamabhinirmāya yenānaṅgaṇasya gṛhapaterniveśanaṃ tenopasaṃkrāntaḥ | upasaṃkramya dauvārikaṃ puruṣamāmantrayate-gaccha bhoḥ puruṣa, anaṅgaṇasya gṛhapateḥ kathaya-kauśikagotro brāhmaṇo dvāre tiṣṭhati bhavantaṃ draṣṭukāma iti | sa kathayati-brāhmaṇa, gṛhapatinā ahaṃ sthāpitaḥ-yaḥ kaścid yācanaka āgacchati, sa yat prārthayate, taddātavyaṃ na tu praveśa iti | yena te prayojanaṃ tadgṛhītvā gaccha | kiṃ te gṛhapatinā dṛṣṭeneti ? sa kathayati-bhoḥ puruṣa, na mama kenacit prayojanam | ahaṃ gṛhapatimeva draṣṭukāmaḥ | gaccheti | tenānaṅgaṇasya gṛhapatergatvā niveditam-ārya, kauśikasagotro brāhmaṇo dvāre tiṣṭhati āryaṃ draṣṭukāma iti | sa kathayati-gaccha bhoḥ puruṣa, yena tasya prayojanaṃ tat prayaccha-kiṃ tenātra praviṣṭeneti ? sa kathayati-ārya, ukto mayā evaṃ kathayati-nāhaṃ kiṃcit prārthayāmi, api tu gṛhapatimeva draṣṭukāma iti | sa kathayati-bhoḥ puruṣa yadyevam, praveśaya | sa tena praveśitaḥ | brāhmaṇaḥ kathayati-kasmāt tvaṃ gṛhapate kare kapolaṃ dattvā cintāparastiṣṭhasīti ? sa gṛhapatirgāthāṃ bhāṣate -



na tasya kathayecchokaṃ yaḥ śokānna pramocayet |

tasmai tu kathayecchokaṃ yaḥ śokātsaṃpramocayet ||16|| iti ||



śakraḥ kathayati-gṛhapate, kastava śokaḥ ? kathaya, ahaṃ te śokātpramocayāmīti | tena vistareṇa samākhyātam | atha śakro devendraḥ kauśikabrāhmaṇarūpamantardhāpya svarūpeṇa sthitvā kathayati-gṛhapate, viśvakarmā te devaputraḥ sāhāyyaṃ kalpayiṣyatītyuktvā prakrāntaḥ | atha śakro devendro devāṃstrāyastriṃśān gatvā viśvakarmāṇaṃ devaputramāmantrayate-gaccha, viśvakarman, anaṅgaṇasya gṛhapateḥ sāhāyyaṃ kalpaya | paraṃ bhadraṃ tava kauśiketi viśvakarmaṇā devaputreṇa śakrasya devendrasya pratiśrutya āgataḥ | prativiśiṣṭatarā nagaraśobhā nirmitā, divyo maṇḍalavāṭo divyāsanaprajñaptirdivya āhāraḥ samanvāhṛtaḥ | airāvaṇo nāgarājo vipaśyinaḥ samyaksaṃbuddhasya śataśalākaṃ chatramupari mūrghno dhārayati, avaśiṣṭā nāgā avaśiṣṭānāṃ bhikṣūṇām | śacī devakanyā vipaśyinaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhaṃ sauvarṇena maṇivālavyajanena vījayati, avaśiṣṭā apsaraso bhikṣūn | bandhumatā rājñā avacarakaḥ puruṣaḥ preṣitaḥ-gaccha bhoḥ puruṣa, kīdṛśenāhāreṇānaṅgaṇo gṛhapatiḥ buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ tarpayatīti ? sa puruṣastatra gatastāṃ vibhūtiṃ dṛṣṭvā tatraiva avasthitaḥ | tenāmātyaḥ preṣitaḥ | so'pi tatraivāvasthitaḥ | kumāraḥ preṣitaḥ | so'pi tatraivāvasthitaḥ | tato bandhumān rājā svayameva taddvāraṃ gatvā avasthitaḥ | vipaśyī samyaksaṃbuddhaḥ kathayati-gṛhapate, bandhumān rājā dṛṣṭasatyaḥ | tasyāntike tvayā kharavākkarma niścāritam | sa eva dvāre tiṣṭhati | gaccha kṣamayeti | tenāsau nirgatya kṣamita uktaśca-mahārāja, praviśa svahastena pariveṣaṇaṃ kuru | sa praviṣṭaḥ | paśyati divyāṃ vibhūtim | dṛṣṭvā ca paraṃ vismayamāpannaḥ kathayati-gṛhapate, tvamevaiko'rhasi dine dine buddhapramukhaṃ bhikṣusaṃghaṃ bhojayituṃ na vayamiti | athānaṅgaṇo gṛhapatirvipaśyinaṃ samyaksaṃbuddhamanayā vibhūtyā traimāsyaṃ praṇītenāhāreṇa saṃtarpya pādayornipatya praṇidhānaṃ kartumārabdhaḥ-yanmayā evaṃvidhe sadbhūtadakṣiṇīye kārā kṛtā, anenāhaṃ kuśalamūlena āḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule jāyeyam, divyamānuṣīṃ śriyaṃ pratyanubhaveyam, evaṃvidhānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ lābhī syām, evaṃvidhameva śāstāramārāgayeyaṃ mā virāgayeyamiti ||



kiṃ manyadhve bhikṣavo yo'sau anaṅgaṇo nāma gṛhapatiḥ, eṣa evāsau jyotiṣkaḥ kulaputrastena kālena tena samayena | yadanena bandhumato rājño dṛṣṭasatyasyāntike kharā vāgniścāritā, tasya karmaṇo vipākena pañcaśatāni samātṛkaścitāyāmāropya dhmāpitaḥ | yāvadetarhi api citāmāropya dhmāpitaḥ | yadvipaśyini tathāgate kārāṃ kṛtvā praṇidhānaṃ kṛtam, tasya karmaṇo vipākena āḍhye mahādhane mahābhoge kule jātaḥ | divyamānuṣī śrīḥ prādurbhūtā | mama śāsane pravrajya sarvakleśaprahāṇādarhattvaṃ sākṣātkṛtam | ahamanena vipaśyinā samyaksaṃbuddhena sārdhaṃ samajavaḥ samabalaḥ samadhuraḥ samasāmānyaprāptaḥ śāstā ārāgito na virāgitaḥ | iti hi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇānāṃ karmaṇāmekāntakṛṣṇo vipākaḥ, ekāntaśuklānāmekāntaśuklaḥ, vyatimiśrāṇāṃ vyatimiśraḥ | tasmāt tarhi bhikṣava ekāntakṛṣṇāni karmāṇyapāsya vyatimiśrāṇi ca, ekāntaśukleṣveva karmasvābhogaḥ karaṇīyaḥ | ityevaṃ vo bhikṣavaḥ śikṣitavyam ||
