tadevaṃ karyahetau yato yabhdavadṛṣṭaṃ sakṛt pratyakṣānupalambhābhyāṃ tādṛśasya sarvvasya tathāvidhādeva janma na tadvijātīyadityekasyā api kāryavyakteḥ kutaścid bhāvadarśane vyāptyā'nvayavyatirekasiddhiriti pratipāditam| anupalabdhau tu yathoktāyāṃ nimittāntarābhāvopadarśananibandhanayornnānvayavyatirekayorvvipratipattiḥ| svarūpa eva tu pare vipratipadyante| tathāhikecidupalabdhyabhāvamātramanupalabdhimabhāvasya prasajyapratiṣedhātmanaḥ pramāṇāntaratvena gamikāmicchanti īśvarasenaprabhṛtayaḥ, apare tu pratiṣedhyaviṣayajñānarūpeṇāpariṇāmamātmanaḥ tadanyavastuviṣayaṃ vijñānameva vā'bhāvasya gamakaṃ pratyakṣānumānābhyāṃ pramāṇāntaramāhurmmīmāṃsakāḥ| na hyanyavastuviṣayaṃ jñānaṃ pratyakṣānumānātmakamabhāvaṃ pratipadyate, tasya bhāvāṃśaviṣayatvāt, abhāvāṃśasya ca tato'nyatvāt| abhāvāṃśe tu nāstīti jñānaṃ janayat tadabhāvapramāṇākhyāṃ labhate, yathendriyaṃ svaviṣayapratipattijanakatvena pratyakṣākhyām| tathā'nye anyabhāvalakṣaṇāṃ tajjñānalakṣaṇāṃ vā'nupalabdhimabhāvasyaiva sādhanamāhurnābhāvavyavahārasya, anupalabdherliṅgādādabhāvasiddhau svayameva tadvyavahārapravṛtteḥ| naiyāyikāstu nāstīti jñānameva kevalapradeśādigrāhijñānantarabhāvipratyakṣaṃ na pramāṇāntaramabhāvasya tuccharūpasya paricchedātmakamācakṣate tadevāsya ghaṭādeḥ pratiṣedhyasyānupalabdhiśabdena yadyucyate na kaścidvirodhaḥ iti| tadevamanupalabdhau bhedaṃ gatā buddhayaḥ prativādināmiti tannirāsārthamanupalabdhisvarūpaṃ tāvadupadarśayannāha-“upalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasya” ityādi| ‘upalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptīḥ’ ‘upalambhapratyayāntarāṇāṃ samanantarādhipatipratyayasaṃjñitānāṃ sākalyam, ālambanapratyayasya svabhāvaviśeṣaśca| yaḥ svabhāvaḥ satsvanyeṣūpalambhapratyayeṣu san pratyakṣa eva bhavatī’tyevaṃrūpā śāstrakṛtā'nyatra vyākhyātā naiyāyikavipratipattinirāsārtham| te hyupalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptiśabdena mahāttvānekadravyavattvarūpāṇi dravyāṇāmāhuḥ| “mahattvādanekadravyavattvād rūpāccopalabdhiḥ” iti vacanāt| evaṃ copalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasyānupalabdhiḥ satyapi vastuni sambhavatītyasadvyvahārasiddhāvanaikāntikītyācakṣate| na hi cākṣuṣasyāpi raśmermahattvānekadravyavattvarūpāṇyupalambhakāni bhavanti| na ca tāvatā'nupalambha'pyasavdyavahārastatra śakyate karttum| yadāha bhāṣyakāraḥ-‘nānumānata upalabhyamānasya pratyakṣato'nupalabdhirabhāve hetuḥ’ iti| indriyatvāt tvagādivat kila prāpyakāri cakṣurityanumānataścākṣuṣo raśmirupalabhyate tasya pratyakṣato'nupalabdhiḥ kathamabhāvavyavahāraṃ sādhayet ? iti| tadevamupalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasyānu palabdhimasavdyavahāre'naikā ntikīmāhurnaiyāyikāḥ tannirāsamupalabdhilakṣaṇaprāpteraviparītarūpopadarśanena śāstrakāro'bhyadhāt| yadā hyupalambhapratyayāntarasākalyaṃ svabhāvaviśeṣaśca yathokta upalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptirucyate na mahattvādikaṃ tadā kuto vyabhicārāvakāśaḥ ?, sati vastuni tasyā asambhavāt| mahattvādikaṃ tvasambhavādeva nopalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptiśabdena vācyam| nahi rūpādivyatiriktaṃ dravyaṃ tatpratibhāsavivekinā''kārāntareṇa svajñāne pratibhāsate| na cāpratibhāsamānamanātmarūpavivekinā rūpeṇa pratyakṣatāmanubhavatyatiprasaṅgāt| tat kuto'syā'sato mahattvādisambhavaḥ ?| na ca svarūpeṇāmahataḥ tatsambandhe'pyasya mahattāsambhavaḥ| apararūpeṇa vā grahaṇe kathaṃ tadgrāhijñānamabhrāntam ?| tato na mahattvaṃ dravyasyopalambhakaṃ rūpaṃ vā| tasyāpi svarūpeṇa grahaṇe dravyātmano'tyantaparokṣatvāt| dravyarūpasya ca tadvivekenānupalakṣaṇānna tathā grāhakatvam| na ca mahattvaṃ rūpaṃ vā dravyodayakāle'bhyupagamyate, yato dravyaṃ guṇasya samavāyikāraṇamiṣyate| tacca pratilabdhātmakameva tathātāmanubhavatīti prathame kṣaṇe dravyaṃ nirguṇameva| na cāsya dvitīye kṣaṇe prāktanarūpatyāgo'sti rūpāntaraṃ vā''virbhavati yataḥ prāgapratipannādhārabhāvaṃ mahattvādiguṇapratibandhādādhāratāṃ yāyāt| na cājanaka ādhāraḥ| janakatve ca kṣaṇikatā, arthakriyāvirodhādakṣaṇikasya| tataḥ kutaḥ sāmavāyikāraṇasya sambhavaḥ ?, yataḥ svotkalitaṃ kāryaṃ janayat tathā vyapadiśyate| na caitat kṣaṇikatve sambhavati akṣaṇikatve vā prāga'nādhārasya paścādādhārābhāvaḥ| samavāyikāraṇāsambhavādevānekadravyavattvamapyasmabhavi yasmādanekaṃ dravyamārambhakaṃ samavāyikāraṇātmanā yasya vidyate tadevaṃ vyapadiśyate| dravyābhavācca nānekadravyavattvaṃ| sattve'pi mahattvādernneyamupalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptirasmākamabhimatā| yā tvabhimā(ma)tā na tayopalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasyānupalabdhirasavdyavahārasiddhāvanaikāntikīti śāstrakāro darśayāmbabhūva “upalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasya” yā “anupalabdhiḥ” kāraṇasya vyāpakasya vā pratiṣedhyādanyasya sā “abhāvahetuḥ” kāryasya vyāpyasya ca “abhāvavyavahārahetuśca”| yā tu pratiṣedhyasyaivopalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasyānupalabdhiḥ sā'bhāvavyavahārahetureveti vāśabdena darśayati| yā tvanupalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasyānupalabdhiḥ pratyakṣānumānanivṛttilakṣaṇā sā saṃśayahetuḥ pramāṇanivṛttāvapyarthābhāvāsiddheḥ, nimittābhāvāttu savdyavahārapratiṣedhaheturityavagantavyam|

[2. sveṣṭāmanupalabdhiṃ spaṣṭayitumīśvarasenakumārilādīnāṃ nirāsaḥ|]
tatra ye tāvadupalabdhyabhāvamātramanupalabdhimicchanti, “vijñānaṃ vā'nyavastuni” iti vacanāt tadanyavastuvijñānameva vā, tannirāsārthaṃ jñātṛ-jñeyadharmalakṣaṇāmanupalabdhiṃ darśayitumupalabdhimeva tāvaddvividhāmdarśayannāha- “atra” anupalabdhivākye yopalabdhiḥ śrūyate kriyārūpā sā yadā kartṛsthatayā'pekṣyate tadā tasyā “upalabhamānasya” katuḥ “dharmmatve” apekṣyamāṇe “tajjñānam” upalabhamānasya yajjñānaṃ tad upalabdhirucyate| upalabhamānaśca buddhīndriyadehakalāpa eva ca pūrvvakṣaṇasaṅgṛhīta upalabdhijanaka ucyate| tathāhi-upalabdherjanaka āśrayo vā karttā parairucyate| na cendriyāderanyasya janakatvaṃ sambhavati yato'nvayavyatirekanibandhanaḥ kāryakāraṇabhāvavyavahāraḥ, tau cānvayavyatirekau nendriyāderanyasya sambhavataḥ satsvindriyādiṣu niyamenopalabdherbhāvāt| yadi hīndriyādiṣu satsvapi kadācidupalabdhirnopajāyate tadā satsvapyanyeṣu sakaleṣu hetuṣu kāryānutpattiḥ kāraṇāntaravaikalyaṃ sūcayatīti tavdyatiriktakāraṇāntaraṃ parikalpyeta| na caitadasti, tat kathamātmanastadutpattau nimittabhāvo'bhyupagamyeta ? atiprasaṅgāt| yadāha-

“yasmin sati bhāvatyeva yat tato'nyasya kalpane|
taddhetutvena sarvvatra hetunāmanavasthitiḥ||” iti|
āśrayatvamapi janakasyaiveti tadapyātmano na sambhavati| sthāpakatvādāśraya iti cet; na, kṣaṇikatve sthiterabhāvādupalabdherakṣaṇikatve'pi svayamevāvināśādavasthānāt| tathāhi-upalabdheravināśa eva sthitirucyate na pātābhāvaḥ tasyā gurutvābhāvāt “saṃyogābhāvena gurutvāt patanam” iti ca pareṣāṃ kṛtāntaḥ| samavāyādāśraya iti cet; nanu so'pi ādhāryādhārabhūtānāmeveṣyate| na cāpatanadharmmikāyā upalabdherādhāreṇa kiṃcit, samavāyāccāśrayatve'nyasyāpi tabhdāvaprasaṅgaḥ, tasya sarvvātmasu samānatvāt, ekatvenāsyopagamāt| kramayaugapadyābhyāmarthakriyāvirodhācca nāsyātmanaḥ sattvam, tato'sya kuto janakatvam ? āśrayatvaṃ vā ? ityalaṃ kṣuṇṇakṣodīkaraṇeneti|

evamupalabdhimādarśyānupalabdhimādarśayannāha-“ tasmādupalabdhijñānādanyā” vastvantaraviṣayā “upalabdhiḥ” jñānātmikā “anupalabdhiḥ”| kathaṃ punarupalabdhirevānupalabdhirucyate ? ityāha- “vivakṣite”tyādi| yathā bhakṣyābhakṣyaprakaraṇe vivakṣitād bhakṣyādanyatvād ‘abhakṣyo grāmyakukkuṭaḥ’ bhakṣyo'pi san tadanyasya-ucyate| yathā ca sparśanīyāsparśanīyādhikāre vivakṣitāt sparśanīyādanyatvād ‘asparśanīyaścāṇḍālādiḥ’-tadanyasya sparśanīyo'pi san-ucyate| tadvadupalabhdirevānupalabdhirmmantavyā| nañaḥ pratiṣedhaviṣayatvāt kathaṃ bhāvaviṣayatā ? iti cet, āha-“paryudāsavṛttyeti”| paryudāsena pratiṣedhyasyārthasya rvajanena yā viśiṣṭe'rthe vṛttistayā , nañaḥ āgṛhītapratiṣedhasya bhāvaviṣayatā| yatra vidheḥ prādhānyaṃ pratiṣedho'rthagṛhītaḥ vidhibhāksvapadena nocyate ekavākyatā ca tatra paryudāsavṛttitā| vidheśca prādhānyaṃ ‘vivakṣitopalabdheranyopalabdhirbhavati’ ityevaṃ vākyenānyopalabdhervvidhānāt anyopalabdhisāmarthyādeva vivakṣitopalabdheḥ pratiṣedhaḥ pratīyate| vivakṣitopalabdheranivarttane tadapekṣayā'nyasyā vidhānāyogāt svapadena nañā vidhibhāṅ nocyate| kiṃ tarhi ?| anyaśabdena paryudāsāśraye-ṇā'nyaśabdasyaiva vākye prayogāt anyā upalabdhiranupalabdhiriti| nañaśca subantena sāmarthyaṃ na tiṅantena ityekavākyatvaṃ ‘na upalabdhiranupalabdhiḥ’ iti| prasajyapratiṣedhaḥ punaretadviparīto mantavyaḥ| tatra hi pratiṣedhasya prādhānyaṃ vidhirarthād gamyate vākyabhedaḥ svapadena nañā pratiṣedhabhāk sambadhyate|

tadevaṃ jñātṛdharmmalakṣaṇāmanupalabdhiṃ vyākhyāya jñeyadharmmalakṣaṇāṃ pratipādayannāha-“upalabhyamānadharmmatve” ityādi| yadā karmmasthakriyāpekṣayopalabhyamānasya vastuno dharmma upalabdhirvvivakṣyate tadā viṣayasvabhāva upalabdhirmantavyā| kīdṛśo viṣayasvabhāvaḥ ? ityāha- “svaviṣaye”tyādi| pratiṣedhyasya ghaṭāderyadātmaviṣayaṃ vijñānaṃ tajjanane yā yogyata tallakṣaṇo viṣayasvabhāva upalabdhiśabdenocyate| yadi viṣayasvabhāva upalabdhiḥ, kathaṃ yogyatālakṣaṇaḥ ?| tathā hi yogyatā dharmmaḥ, dharmmadharmmiṇośca bheda eva ityata āha- “yogyatāyāḥ” ityādi| yogyatā hi paramārthato bhāvarūpaiva na vasturūpāda bhidyate, anyathā bhāvo yogya eva na syāt| yogyatā'syeti ca sambandhābhāvato na syāt| sambandhakalpanāyāmanavasthetyuktaprāyam|

tadevamupalabhervviṣayadharmmatāṃ pratipādyānupalabdherapi pratipādayannāha-“tasmādanyaḥ” ityādi| “tasmāt” pratiṣedhyād ghaṭādeḥ svaviṣayajñānajananayogyād yo'nya upalambhajananayogya eva na tadviparītaḥ svabhāvo ghaṭaviviktapradeśarūpaḥ sa eva cātrānupalabdhiśabdenocyate| prāktanameva nyāyamatrādiśannāha- “pūrvvavaditi|” vivakṣitopalabdheranyatvādabhakṣyāsparśanīyavat paryudāsavṛtyeti| kathaṃ punarayaṃ naña anyārthavṛttiḥ sāmānyaśabdaḥ san ghaṭaviviktapradeśasya tajjñānasyaiva vā ghaṭaviviktasyānupalabdhitvaṃ paryudāsavṛttyā prakalpayati, na punaraviśeṣeṇa sarvveṣāmevānyaśabdavācyānām ? ityata āha- “yatra yasmin” ityādi| “yatra” deśe kāle'vasthāyāṃ vā'vyavadhānādilakṣaṇāyām, “yasmin” pradeśarūpādau “upalabhyamāne niyamena” avaśyaṃtayā “yasyānyasya” padārthasya ghaṭarūpāderupalabdhirbhavati “sa” ghaṭarūpādiḥ padārthaḥ “tatsaṃsṛṣṭaḥ” tena pradeśarūpādinā saṃsṛṣṭaḥ| kathamekasminnupalabhyamāne parasyāpi niyamopalabdhiḥ ? iti cet, yogyatāyā aviśeṣāt| pradeśaghaṭayorhi svaviṣayavijñānajanane yogyatā tulyā| yadā hi pradeśarūpaṃ vyavadhānaviprakarṣādirahitaṃ vijñāne svākāraṃ samarppayati tadā ghaṭarūpamapi tatra tathāvidhaṃ svākāraṃ samarppayatyeva| yadi nāma yogyatā tasya tena tulyā svasvabhāvavyavasthitestu kathaṃ tatsaṃsṛṣṭatā ? ityata āha- “ekajñānasaṃsarggādi”ti| ekatra hi jñāne dvāvapi tau svākāradvāreṇa saṃsṛṣṭau na sākṣāt, tadvijñānaṃ padārthadvayākāramājāyamānaṃ tayorātmani saṃsarggaṃ darśayati| kimiti punastat jñānaṃ padārthadvayākāramavaśyaṃ bhavati yatastayorjñānadvārakaḥ saṃsarggaḥ ? ityata āha- “tayoḥ satoḥ” ityādi| yāvetau tulyayogyatārūpau tau yadi santau bhavatastadā naivaikākāraniyatā pratipattirbhavati| kasmāt ? asambhavāt| na hyeṣa sambhavo'sti-yattulyayogyatārūpayoreka eva pratibhāseta nāpara iti| tathāhi-aviśiṣṭatvād yogyatāyāḥ kastatra svākāraṃ na samarppayet ?| anubhavasiddhaṃ ca yugapadanekapratibhāsanam| na cānubhavaviruddhamācakṣāṇā viduṣāmavadheyavacaso bhavanti| ladhuvṛttitvād yaugapadyābhimāna iti cet; na, bādhakapratyayaviraheṇa bhrāntikalpanānupapatteḥ, sarvvatra tathābhāvāprasaṅgāt| karaṇadharmma evāyaṃ yadekasminneva karmaṇi kriyāṃ niṣpādayatinānekatra, karaṇaṃ cendriyaṃ tato nānekapratipattiheturiti cet, kathaṃ pradīpādiranekatra bahūnāṃ pratipattijanakaḥ ?| kartṛbhedādadoṣa iti cet; kartrekatvāt tarhi kriyaikatra karmmaṇīti kathaṃ ‘karaṇadharmmaḥ’ ityādi vaco na plavate ?| na ca pratikṣaṇaviśarāruṣu bhāveṣu paramārthataḥ kartṛkaraṇādibhāvo yuktaḥ kriyā vā kācit| na ca sarvvakārakānvayavyatirekānuvidhāyini kārye kasyacidatiśayo'sti yenāyaṃ karttā kā(ka)raṇaṃ cedamityādi parikalpyeta| tasmādaviśiṣṭayogyatayoḥ kuta ekarūpaniyatāyāḥ pratipatteḥ sambhavaḥ ? iti siddha ekajñānasaṃsarggaḥ| tulyayogyatārūpatvasya caitadeva liṅgam| na hyasati tulyayogyatārūpatve yugapadekendriyajanitajñānapratibhāsitā rūparasavat sambhavatīti|

tatra yeṣāṃ saugatānāmidaṃ darśanaṃ ‘ekāyatanasaṅgṛhīte'nekatrāpyekamevendriyajñānamājāyate’ iti teṣāṃ mukhya evaikajñānasaṃsarggaḥ| ye tu ‘tatrāpi pratyarthaṃ bhinnānyevaikendriyanimittānyekakālāni tadviṣayāṇāṃ yugapatsannihitānāṃ svajñāneṣu sāmarthyāviśeṣāt, ata evaikatayā loke'dhyavasīyamānāni jñānānyupajāyante’ iti varṇṇayanti teṣāmekendriyajatvenaikāyatanaviṣayatvena caikakāleṣvekatvavyapadeśo loke tathādhyavasāyādaupacārikaḥ|

yadi nāmaikajñānasaṃsarggāt tatsaṃsṛṣṭastathāpi sāmānyena sarvvamanyamayaṃ nañ kinna pratipadayati ? iti, ata āha- “tasmāt” ityādi| yasmādaviśiṣṭatvādyogyatāyā yathoktena prakāreṇaikatra jñāne dvayorapi saṃsarggaḥ tasmādaviśiṣṭaṃ yogyatārūpaṃ yayoḥ tata evaikajñānasaṃsarggiṇau tau tasmāt tayorevaṃrūpayoḥ “parasparāpekṣameva” na sarvvānyapadārthāpekṣam “anyatvamiha” anupalabdhyadhikāre “abhipretam”| loke tu yadyapyaśeṣapadārthāntarāpekṣamanyatvaṃ nañā kvaciducyate vyāptinyāyasamāśrayāt, tathāpi tadiha na gṛhyate, “pratyāsatterāśrayaṇāt” ekajñānasaṃsarggalakṣaṇā prattyāsattirāśrīyate nā'nyā, pramāṇacintādhikārāt anyathā'nupalabdhiranaikāntikyeva syāt| tasmāt tattvacintakaistathāvidhamanyatvamāśrayaṇīyam yadanupalabdheravyabhicāranibandhanam| tacca yathoktamevetyabhiprāyaḥ|

tadevamekajñānasaṃsarggāpekṣayā'nyatvaṃ pratipādyānupalabdhiṃ darśayannāha- “sa kevalaḥ” ityādi| sa eva yadā kevalaḥ pradeśo yathoktaghaṭāpekṣaya tasmādanya ucyate tadā ghaṭaviviktapradeśajñānaṃ vā'nupalabdhiḥ, na tu yathesvaraseno manyate upalabdhyabhāvamātramanupalabdhiriti, vakṣyamāṇadoṣāt; ghaṭaviviktapradeśasvabhāvo vā, na tu tadviviktajñānameva yathāha kumārilaḥ “vijñānaṃ vānyavastuni” iti| yathā hyanyavastuviṣayaṃ jñanamanubhūyamānaṃ pratiyogismaraṇāpekṣaṃ tadabhāvavyavahāranibandhanaṃ tathā tadviviktaḥ pradeśo'pi| tathāhi-kasyacit pratipattuḥ ‘yataḥ kealapradeśākārameva jñānaṃ mayā saṃvedyate na tu ghaṭākāramapi tasmādatra ghaṭo nāsti’ iti evaṃ nāstitājñānamutpadyate; kasyacit tu ‘yataḥ kevalaḥ pradeśo'yaṃ dṛśyate na tu ghaṭasahitaḥ tasmānnāstyatra ghaṭaḥ’ ityevam| tasmādubhayornnāstitājñānajanmani tulyaṃ sāmarthyamiti dvayorapi anupalabdhivyavasthā yukteti| tatra yadā tajjñānaṃ tadā jñātṛdharmmalakṣaṇā'nupalabdhiḥ kartṛsthakriyā'pekṣayā, yadā tatsvabhāvastadā jñeyadharmmalakṣaṇā karmmasthakriyāpekṣayeti|

evamanupalabdhiṃ paryudāsavṛttyā vyavasthāpya sādhyamasyā darśayannāha- “sā abhāvam” ityādi| sarvvānyopalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptavivikte'pi pradeśādau dṛśyamāne yatra ghaṭādau pratiyoginyarthitvādibhiḥ smṛtirasya bhavati tasyābhāvaṃ sādhayati, abhāvavyavahāraṃ vā| kāraṇavyāpakānupalabdhī abhāvamabhāvavyavahāraṃ ca sādhayataḥ| svabhāvānupalabdhistu abhāvyavahārameva| abhāvavyavahāraśca jñānābhidhānapravṛttilakṣaṇaḥ| tatra ‘nāstyatra ghaṭaḥ’ ityevamākāraṃ jñānam, evaṃvidhavastvabhidhāyakaṃ cābhidhānaṃ, niḥśaṅkasya ca tatra pradeśe gamanāgamanalakṣaṇā pravṛttiriti|

atreśvarasena-kumārilayorvvacanāvakāśamāśaṅkaya siddhāntavyavasthāmeva kurvvatā tanmate niraste'pyāhatya tanmatanirāsārthamāha- “kathamanyabhāva” ityādi| īśvaraseno hi manyate-kārya-svabhāvahetubhyāṃ bhāvarūpābhyāṃ anupalabdheḥ pṛthakkaraṇādavaśyamabhāvarūpatvamasyāḥ, anyathā pṛthakkaraṇamanarthakameva syāt| tvayā cānyasya pratiṣedhyaviviktasya pradeśādestajjñānasya vā bhāvarūpānupalabdhirākhyāyate tannūnamanyabhāvastadabhāvo yenaivamabhidhīyate| na caitad yujyate, bhāvābhāvayorvvirodhādekātmatānupapatteriti|

kumārilo'pyevaṃ manyate-yeyaṃ jñātṛ-jñeyadharmmalakṣaṇā dvidhā'nupalabdhirabhāvarūpā tvayocyate tasyā bhavatu nāstitājñānaṃ prati sādhanabhāvaḥ| kintu sa evānyasya pratiṣedhyaviviktasya vastunaḥ pratiṣedhyajñānādanyasya vā tajjñānasya yo bhāvo bhāvāṃśaḥ sa kathamabhāvaḥ ? pratiṣedhasya tajjñānasya vā kathamabhāvāṃśaḥ ?| naiva yujyate, dharmmarūpatayā bhāvābhāvāṃśayorbhedāt| satyapi dharmmirūpeṇābhede tayoścobhdavābhibhavābhyāṃ grahaṇāgrahaṇavyavastheti| yadāha-

“dharmmayorbheda iṣṭo hi dharmmyabhede'pi naḥ sthite|
ubhdavābhibhavātmatvād grahaṇaṃ cāvatiṣṭhate||” iti|
uktottaratāmasya darśayannāha- “uktamuttaramatra”codye yathā “paryudāsavṛttyā apekṣātaḥ”| ‘pratiṣedhyaṃ tajjñānaṃ vā apekṣya tadvivikto'rthastajjñānaṃ vā'bhāvo'nupalabdhiścocyate’ iti īśvarasenasya prativacanam| na hi prasajyapratiṣedha evaiko nañarthaḥ kintu paryudāso'pi| tato'nyabhāvasyābhāvarūpatā na virudhyate, prasajyapratiṣedharūpatā'pyanyabhāvasya yathā tathottaratra vakṣyate| svabhāvahetostvanulabdheḥ pṛthakkaraṇaṃ pratipatrabhiprāyavaśāt| pratipattā hi svabhāvahetau vastupratipattyadhyavasāyī| anupalabdhau tvabhāvapratipattyadhyavasāyī| paramārthatastu pratiṣedhyābhāvavyavahārayogyatā palabdhitvena bhavato'bhimataḥ svayaṃ svarūpeṇa pramāṇenendriyapratyakṣeṇa svasaṃvedanapratyakṣeṇa ca siddhaḥ saṃstasya pratiṣedhyasyābhāvavyavahāraṃ jñānābhidhānapravṛttilakṣaṇaṃ sādhayet “tatsiddhisiddho” vā tasyānyabhāvalakṣaṇasyābhāvasya yathoktasya siddhyā siddho vā tadabhāvastasya pratiṣedhyasya tajjñānasya vā'bhāva iti evamapīṣyamāṇe “na kaścid viśeṣaḥ” tvadabhimatānupalabdhito'smadabhimatānupalabdheḥ tato'smaddarśanaṃ kimiti pratikṣipyate ?| nanvastyevaivamiṣyamāṇe viśeṣo'nyabhāvalakṣaṇānupalabdhiritarayā vyavahitā tadabhāvavyavahāraṃ sādhayeditarā tu sākṣādityāha-sa viśeṣo nāsti yena viśeṣeṇānupalabdhyā'bhāvarūpayā vastusaṃsparśarahitayā'smadabhimatayā'bhāvavyavahārasiddheḥ virodhaḥ syāt| anyasya tu viśeṣasya sato'pyabādhakatvādasatsamatvameva| yadapyuktaṃ-‘tasya sādhanābhāvādabhāvavyavahārāsiddhiprasaṅgaḥ’ iti, tadapyasat, yataḥ sa eva tvadabhimato'nyabhāvaḥ pratiṣedhyaviviktabhūtalātmakastadviṣayā copalabdhiranupalabdhitveneṣṭā bhavatastadabhāvasyānupalabdhitvenāsmanmatasya pratiṣedhyābhāvasya tadupalabdhyabhāvasya ca “kiṃ” kasmāt “na sādhanaṃ” liṅgam “iṣyate ?”| tathā hi sati lokapratītiranusṛtā bhavati| “kiṃ punaḥ” kasmāt punaḥ “abhāvasya” dvividhasya “siddhireva tadabhāvasiddhiḥ” na tatsādhyā kācidanyā vidyata ityasmanmataniṣedhārthaṃ lokātikrāntamiṣyata iti pūrvvapakṣaḥ|

atrāha-“apṛthaksiddheranyabhāvāt” tadabhāvasya pṛthaksiddherabhāvāt kuto liṅgaliṅgitā| tathā “sambandhābhāvāccā” anyabhāvatadabhāva yornna liṅgaliṅgiteti| prathamaṃ tāvat kāraṇaṃ vivṛṇvannāha- “anyabhāvastadviviktadeśātmakastāvanna sādhanaṃ” liṅgaṃ pratiṣedhyābhāvasya, ‘tadupalabdhirapi tadabhāvasya na sādhanam’ iti paścād vakṣyate| tadarthameva tāvacchabdaḥ| kasmādanyabhāvo na sādhanam ? ityāha- “yatsiddhau” yasya vastunaḥ siddhau pratītau “yasya” aparasya vastuno “na siddhi”rnna pratītiḥ tadvastu tasya vastuno liṅgaṃ bhavatītyayaṃ liṅgaliṅginornyāyaḥ| tatrodāharaṇam-“dhūmāgnivaditi”| yathā-yadā dhūmapratītau nāgniḥ pratīyate tadā tayorlliṅgaliṅgibhāvo bhavati, na tu dhūmapratītikāla eva pratīyamāne'gnau| yadi nāmaivaṃ tataḥ kim ? ityata āha-“anyasya vastuno yo bhāvaḥ” svabhāva “tatsiddhyaiva” tatpratītyeva “tadabhāvaḥ” tasya pratiṣedhyasyābhāvaḥ “prasidhyati” pratīyateanyabhāvasyaiva tadabhāvātmakatvāt tatsiddhereva tatsiddhilakṣaṇatvāt|

naiyāyikāstu manyante-pratiṣedhyābhāvo hi prasajyapratiṣedhātmakastuccharūpastasya kathaṃ tadanyabhāvarūpatā ?, bhāvābhāvayorvvirodhāt| tataḥ kathaṃ tadanyabhāvasiddhyaiva tadabhāvasiddhiḥ syāt ? ityata āha- “tasya” tadanyabhāvasya pradeśalakṣaṇasya tasmādanyena pratiṣedhyena ghaṭādinā “asaṃsṛṣṭarūpasya” rahitātmanaḥ kevalasya pratiṣedhyena śūnyātmanaḥ| anena kevalapradeśasyāpi prasajyapratiṣedhātmakatāmāha| kathaṃ bhāvasya tuccharūpatā svabhāvaḥ, virodhāt ? iti cet; na, pararūpeṇa tasyāpi tuccharūpatvāt| yathā hyanapekṣitabhāvāntarasaṃsargaḥ prasajyapratiṣedhaḥ śūnyavikalpapratibhāsī pratiṣedhyena tuccharūpaḥ tadrūpavirahāt, tathā tadanyabhāvo'pi pratiṣedhyāsaṃsṛṣṭarūpaḥ| tataḥ kathamasya pratiṣedhyena tuccharūpatā virudhyeta ?| svarūpeṇa hyayamatuccharūpaḥ syānna pararūpeṇa, anyathā kathamasyānyabhāvatvaṃ parasya vā tatrābhāvaḥ syāt ?| yo hi yadabhāvarūpo na bhavati sa evāsau bhavati, tatsvarūpavat| tataḥ sarvvasya jagataḥ parasparātmatāprasaṅgaḥ| tasmāt sarvvabhāvāḥ pararūpeṇa niḥsvabhāvāḥ svarūpeṇa rūpavattve'pī tyanavadyam|

kastarhi prasajyapratiṣedhatparyudāsasya bhedaḥ ?| na kaścit, kevalamanapekṣitarūpāntaramabhāvamātraṃ prasajyapratiṣedha iti loke kathyate| rūpāntaraṃ tu pararūpaśanyaṃ paryudāsa iti| na tu rūpāntaraṃ pararūpatucchātmakaṃ na bhavati| anubhūyata eva ca rūpāntaraṃ tadrūpaśūnyatayā, kathaṃ tasya prasajyapratiṣedhātmatā na syāt pararūpeṇa ?| sāmarthyāt tatastatpratītiriti cet; na, akāraṇapratītau sāmarthyāsambhavāt| tādātmyābhāve hi prasajyapratiṣedhasya paryudastāt pratītau tatkāraṇatve sati syāt pratipattiḥ nānyathā| tasya tadanyāsaṃsṛṣṭarūpasya yat tattvaṃ tasya pratiṣedhyatuccharūpatāyā vyavasthāpakaṃ pramāṇaṃ pratyakṣarūpam tata eva-na taduttarakālabhāvino ‘nāstīha ghaṭaḥ’ iti vikalpāt, tasya gṛhītagrāhitayā smṛtitvenāpramāṇatvāt-anyasya ghaṭādestatrāsato vyavacchedasyābhāvasya siddhestadabhāvātmakasyaiva pradeśasya tena grahaṇāt| dvividho hyayaṃ pradeśo ghaṭāsaṃsṛṣṭarūpsastavdyāvṛttarūpatayā tato'nyo ghaṭavānapi, kevalaśca ghaṭaṃ prati apratipannādhārabhāvaḥ| tasya tadvivekena pratyakṣeṇa grahaṇe ghaṭādanyatvaṃ ghaṭavirahaśca gṛhīta eva bhavatīti na vastvasaṃkarasiddhyartham, ‘ihedaṃ nāsti’ ityevamarthaṃ ca pramāṇāntaramanveṣaṇīyam| vistarataścaitaduttaratra vakṣyata iti āstāṃ tāvat| yataścānyabhāvasiddhyaiva tadabhāva uktena nyāyena siddhyati tato nānyabhāvaḥ pratiṣedhyābhāvasya liṅgam|

dvitīyaṃ kāraṇaṃ vyācakṣāṇa āha- “sambandhābhāvācca” iti| anyabhāvatadabhāvayorna kaścit sambandho'sti, tataḥ kuto liṅgaliṅgibhāvaḥ ? iti| etacca kadocyate ?| yadā tadabhāvarūpatā'nyabhāvasya parānabhyupagatā'pekṣyate| tadanyabhāvāt pṛthageva tadabhāvastuccharūpa iṣyate paraiḥ| anyathoktena nyāyenānyabhāvasyaiva tadabhāvarūpatve tādātmyāt kathaṃ sambandhābhāvaḥ ?| pratyakṣasiddhatā ca tadaiva, na pakṣāntareṇa abhihitā| “tacca tasya” ityādyasyaiva vivaraṇaṃ vyatirekamukhena “ekārthasamavāya” iti paradarśanenoktaṃ| pareṣāṃ hi naiyāyikādīnāṃ vyatiriktāveva kṛtakānityatvākhyau dharmmāvekasminneva dharmmiṇi samavetāviti kṛtakasyānityatvenaikasminnarthe dharmmiṇi samavāyaḥ sambandhaḥ dhamasya veti sambandha evodāharaṇāntaram| atraikarthasamavāya iti saṃyogaḥ sa eva samavāyaśabdenoktaḥ| saṃyogasamavāyayoḥ kalpitatvād bhedena vyapadeśe'nādarāt| pareṣāṃ tvagnidhūmau svāvayaveṣveva samavetāviti na tayorekārthasamavāya ādhārādheyabhāvo veti dhūmasyāgnerupari darśanāllaukikaḥ sambandha uktaḥ| “janyajanakabhāvo vā” iti pāramārthikaḥ sambandho'bhihitaḥ, paramārthato'gnerjanakatvāt itarasya ca janyatvāditi|

nanu ceśvarasenena saha vicāraḥ prakrāntaḥ tat kimiti naiyāyikābhimasyāpi sambandhasyānyabhāvatadabhāvayorabhāva ucyate| satyam, prasaṅgena tu tanmatasyāpi niṣedhārthamuktam| pūrvvaṃ hyanyabhāvagrāhipratyakṣasiddhatvāt pratiṣedhyābhāvasya na tadarthaṃ pratyakṣāntaraṃ ‘nāstīha ghaṭaḥ’ ityevamākāraṃ kalpanīyamiti prasaṅgataḥ kathitam| adhunā tu prasaṅgādidamucyate-yadānyabhāvagrāhipratyakṣasiddho'yaṃ tadabhāvo na bhavati tadā pratyakṣāntaraṃ ‘nāsti iha ghaṭaḥ’ ityevamākāraṃ viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvalakṣaṇāt sannikarṣādiṣṭaṃ bhavatā| na cāsati sambandhe'nyabhāvatadabhāvayorvviśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvo yuktaḥ, atiprasaṅgāt| tataḥ kutastallakṣaṇāt sannikarṣāt tadabhāve pratyakṣaṃ bhavediti|

evaṃ sambandhasvarūpamākhyāya tasyehāsambhavamāha- “naivam” yathā kṛtakatvānityatvayoragnidhūmayorvvaikārthasamavāyādilakṣaṇaḥ sambandho naivaṃ kaścid bhāvābhāvayoḥ sambandho yena “asya” tadabhāvasyānyabhāvaḥ sādhanaṃ syāt| yāvekatrārthe dharmmirūpe pravarttete tayorekārthasamavāyo bhavati| anyabhāvaśca pradeśākhyaḥ svāvayaveṣu yeṣu varttate na tatra ghaṭābhāvaḥ| evaṃ hi pradeśāvayaveṣu ghaṭo nāstīti syāt na pradeśe| na cāsya pradeśāvayavairārambhaḥ| te hi dravyātmāno dravyāntaramevārabhante| na ca ghaṭābhāvo dravyam| navaiva hi dravyāṇīṣyante| na ca kriyāvadādikaṃ dravyalakṣaṇaṃ tatrāsti| na ca guṇarūpatayā tatra varttate| caturvviśatireva hi guṇā iṣyante| na cāyaṃ teṣāmanyatamaḥ| nāpi karmmarūpatayapañcasu karmmasvanantarbhāvāt tallakṣaṇavirahācca| “ekadravyam” ityādikaṃ hi tallakṣaṇam| na caitadabhāve sambhavatīti| nāpi sāmānyādirūpatayā, tadrupavirahādeva| nāpyanyabhāvatadabhāvayoḥ saṃyogo'gnidhūmayoriva, dravyayoreva tadabhyupagamāt| na ca tadabhāvo dravyamityuktam| nāpyādhāra(rā)dheyabhāvo, yataḥ so'pi saṃyoganimitta ucyate ‘iha kuṇḍe badarāṇi’ iti| samavāyanimitto vā, ‘iha tantuṣu paṭaḥ’ iti| na cābhāvasyādravyātmanaḥ saṃyogaḥ samasti| nāpi samavāyaḥ, pañcānāmeva hi dravyādīnāṃ padārthānāṃ samavāyitvamiṣyate; na cābhāvaḥ pañcasvantarbhavatīti| na ca tadātmānupakāre satyādhāravyapadeśaḥ sambhavati| upakāre vā janyajanakabhavaḥ| na ca tadabhāvo janyaḥ, kāryatāprasaṅgāt| kāryatā cāsyāsambhavinī, yataḥ svakāraṇasamavāyaḥ, sattāsamavāyo vā kāryatocyate bhavabhdiḥ| anyabhāvastu pradeśākhyo'sya na kāraṇam, trayāṇāmeva hi dravyaguṇakarmmaṇāṃ dravyaṃ kāraṇamiṣṭam| na cābhāvo dravyādilakṣaṇaḥ iti| sattāsamavāye'pi satpratyayaviṣayatā tadabhāvasya syāt, nābhāvapratyayaviṣayatā| pradeśābhāve'pi ca ghaṭābhāvasambhavāt kutastatkāryatā| na cāsya prativiṣayaṃ bhedaḥ, ekākārajñānaviṣayatvāt| sambandhibhedād bhede vā sāmānyādiṣvapi tatprasaṅgaḥ| samavāyopyasyānantarameva nirasta iti kutaḥ svakāraṇasattāsamavāyarūpā kāryatā tadabhāvasya syāt ?| etena janyajanakabhāvaḥ prayuktaḥ| tataḥ sarvvathā sambandhābhāvānnānyabhāvaḥ tadabhāvasya sādhanamiti|

paraḥ sambandhāntaraṃ darśayannāha- “asti viṣaye”tyādi| yathā hi artho viṣayaḥ śabdo viṣayīti tayorvviṣayaviṣayibhāvaḥ sambandhaḥ, evamanyabhāvatadabhāvayorviṣayaviṣayibhāvaḥ sambandho bhaviṣyati| pradeśākhyenānyabhāvena ghaṭābhāvasya pratyāyanāditi pūrvvapakṣāśaṅkā| śabdārthayoḥ sambandhaḥ syādityabhisambandhaḥ| kiṃ rūpaḥ ?| “kāryakāraṇalakṣaṇaḥ”| kathaṃ punararthakāryatā śabdasya ?| tatpratipādanābhiprāye sati arthapratipādanavivakṣāyāṃ satyāṃ tatprayogācchabdoccāraṇāt| tenārthena vivakṣāviparivarttinā śabdasya kāryakāraṇalakṣaṇaḥ sambandhaḥ syāt| yadyapi ca śabdārthayoḥ buddhiparikalpitasāmānyarūpatā tathāpyarthapratibhāsinyā vivakṣayā śabdasāmānyotprekṣānibandhanasya śabdasvalakṣaṇasyotthāpanāt tanmukhena kāryakāraṇabhāva ucyate| “avinābhāvalakṣaṇo vā” iti paraprasiddhyocyate| paro hyavinābhāvalakṣaṇaḥ śabdārthayoḥ sambandha iti vyavaharati| tataḥ sambandhanivandhana pratipādyapratipādakarūpo viṣayaviṣayibhāvo yuktaḥ| tadabhāvānyabhāvayorapyevaṃ bhaviṣyatīti cet, āha- “ayaṃ ca” anantaroktaprakāraḥ “atra” tadabhāvānyabhāvayoḥ “na sambhavati”| nahi ghaṭābhāvapratipādanābhiprāye sati anyabhāvasya pradeśalakṣaṇasya prayogo niṣpattirbhavati, ghaṭābhāvapratipādanābhiprāyāt prāgapi pradeśasya svahetubhya eva niṣpatteḥ| satyapi tadabhiprāye'nyabhāvasyābhāvācca| tataśca kathaṃ tayoḥ kāryakāraṇabhāvaḥ ?, tadvārako'vinābhāvo vā syāt ? yato viṣayaviṣayibhāvaḥ kalpyeta|

syānmatam-yathā śabdārthayoḥ sādhyasādhanabhāvanimitto viṣayaviṣayibhāvaḥ tathā anyabhāvatadabhāvayorapi ityetāvanmātreṇa śabdārthayordṛṣṭāntatetyata āha-“siddhe hi” ityādi| śabdārthayorhi kāryakāraṇabhāvanibandhanaḥ sādhyasādhanabhāvaḥ anyathā'rthāntaratve tadayogāt tathehāpi yadi tadabhāvānyabhāvayoḥ sādhyasādhanabhāvaḥ sidhyet tadā tanmukhena sādhyasādhanabhāvadvāreṇa viṣayaviṣayibhāvaḥ syāt| yāvatā sa eva sādhyasādhanabhāvo'sati sambandhe kāryakāraṇabhāvādike na sidhyati, sarvvasya sādhyasādhanatāprasakteḥ|

kathamindriyaṃ svaviṣayasiddhinibandhanamiti cet; parasparopasarppaṇādyāśrayāt pratyayaviśeṣādindriyaviṣayayorekavijñānotpādanayorudayāt tathā vyapadeśaḥ, naivamiha, anyabhāvatadabhāvayostadayogāt| liṅgaliṅgibhāvalakṣaṇasya ca sādhyasādhanabhāvasya prakṛtatvāt, tasya ca sambandhamantareṇāyogāt|

naiva sambandhāntaranibandhano'nyabhāvatadabhāvayoḥ sādhyasādhanabhāvo'pi tu viṣayaviṣayibhāvanimitta eveti cet; āha- “anyathā” yadi sambandhāntaraṃ neṣyate kintu viṣayaviṣayibhāvāt sādhyasādhanabhāvaḥ tasmācca viṣayaviṣayibhāvaḥ, tata itaretarāśrayamidaṃ syāt| tathā caikāsiddhau dvayorapyasiddhirbhavediti| kiñcānyabhāvācca liṅgabhūtādabhāvasya liṅginaḥ siddhāvanumitāviṣyamāṇāyāṃ asamudāyaśca sādhyaḥ syāt, anyabhāvena tadabhāvasya kevalasyaiva sādhanāt na kevalasambandhābhāvāt sādhyasādhanabhāvāyogaḥ| samudāyaśca viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvāpanno dharmmadharmmilakṣaṇaḥ sādhyo ya iṣṭastadabhāvadoṣaśceti ‘ca’ śabdaḥ|

sarvvatra samudāyasya sādhyatā naiveṣṭeti cet, āha- “tathā ca” dharmmamātrasyāpi svatantrasya sādhyatopagame ‘ghaṭābhāvastadanyabhāvāt’ ityevaṃrūpe prayoge ghaṭasya sarvvatra deśe sarvvadā cābhāvaḥ prasajyeta| dharmmiṇi hi kvaciddharmmasya guṇabhūtasya sādhane tatraiva tatkāla eva ca bhāvo yukto nānyadeti sarvvatra samudāya eva sādhyo'bhyupagantavyaḥ na kevalo dharmma iti|

atrāha paraḥ-nāsamudāyasya sādhyatā anyabhāvatadabhāvayorasambandho vā| kutaḥ ?| “pradeśādi” ityādi| ‘iha pradeśe ghaṭo nāsti’ ityevaṃ ghaṭābhāvena pradeśādirdharmmī viśeṣyate saghaṭāt pradeśāderbhedenāvasthāpyata iti tadviśeṣaṇatvaṃ prāptasādhyate na tu ghaṭo nāstītyevaṃ “kevalo” dharmmiṇaḥ kasyacigduṇabhāvamanāpannaḥ| tato nāsamudāyasya sādhyateti kutastabhdāvī doṣaḥ ?| “na ca” naivāsminpakṣe “liṅgasyā” nyabhāvātmano “liṅginaśca” pradeśādidharmmilakṣaṇasya “asambandhadoṣaḥ prasajyate”| kuta ?| “anyabhāvasya” ghaṭaviviktapradeśadilakṣaṇasya “pradeśādinā” dharmmiṇā “sambandhāt” tadātmyasabhdāvāditi| tathā hi-śabdādidharmmiṇā kṛtakatvādestādātmyalakṣaṇa eva sambandha iṣyate bhavatā| sa ihāstītyabhiprāyaḥ| tataśca ‘sambandhābhāvācca’ ityayuktamiti manyate|

siddhāntavādī tu sādhyadharmmalakṣaṇasya liṅgino ghaṭābhāvākhyasyānyabhāvena liṅgena sambandhābhāvaḥ prāgukto na dharmmiṇā tataḥ damuttaraṃ sāṃbadhyata iti manyamāno dharmmiṇā'pyanyabhāvākhyasya liṅgasya sambandhābhāvaṃ darśayannāha-“na” liṅgaliṅginorasambandho na ceti sambadhyate| tathā nāsamudāyasādhanamiti| kintu liṅgaliṅginorasambandha evāsamudāyasādhanameva ca evamapi bruvataḥ| kutaḥ ?| pradeśādereva dharmmitayā'vasthāpyamānasyānyabhāvatvādanyabhāvalakṣaṇaliṅgatvāt| etadeva darśayati-yatraiva hi pradeśādau dharmmitayā tvayā kalpyamāne yad ghaṭādikaṃ nāsītyucyate lokena sa eva pradeśādistena ghaṭādinā'saṃsṛṣṭassaṃsargarahitaḥ “anyabhāvo” liṅgatayeṣṭo nāparaḥ kaścit yataḥ “taddarśanādeva” ghaṭāsaṃsṛṣṭapradeśādidarśanādevāsya pratipattuḥ ‘ghaṭo nāsti’ iti vikalpo liṅgijñānatayopagato bhavati| tataḥ sa evānyabhāvaḥ| yadeva hi dṛśyamānaṃ liṅgijñānaṃ janayati tadeva liṅgamucyate| ghaṭāsaṃsṛṣṭaśca pradeśādirevam| tasmāt tadevānyabhāvalakṣaṇaṃ liṅgamupeyam| tataḥ kathaṃ tasyaivānyabhāvasya vyāvṛttito'pi bhedamananubhavato liṅgaliṅgibhāvo liṅgatvaṃ liṅgitvaṃ vā ?| nahi liṅgameva dharmmī bhavitumarhati, dharmmipratipattāveva sādhyapratipatteranvayādyanusaraṇāyogāt| tataścānyasya dharmmiṇo'bhāvāt kathamanyabhāvātmano liṅgasya tatsambandhaḥ, samudāyasādhyatā vā ?| śabdakṛtakatvayostu paramārthatastādātmye'pi vyāvṛttibhedanibandhano'styeva bhedaḥ| tataḥ śabdādidharmmipratipattāvapyanityatvādyapratītau kṛtakatvādinā tat sādhyata iti yuktam|

syānmatam-sāmānyaviśeṣakalpanayā liṅgaliṅgitaikasyāpi bhaviṣyatītyata āha- “na cātra” prakṛte'nyabhāve “sāmānyaviśeṣabhāvakalpanā sambhavati”, yena sāmānyaviśeṣavikalpena sāmānyaṃ heturbhaved viśeṣo dharmmī, yataḥ samudāyasādhyatā liṅgaliṅginoḥ sambandho vā syāt| kuto na sambhavatītyāha-tadviśeṣapratipattereva” ghaṭaviviktapradeśaviśeṣapratipattereva “tadabhāvasya” ghaṭābhāvasya pratīteḥ| yataśca viśeṣa eva ghaṭābhāvapratītinibandhanaṃ tataḥ kiṃ tatra sāmānyakalpanayā kriyata iti| sa eva viśeṣo'nyatra varttamānaḥ sāmānyarūpatāṃ pratipatsyata iti cet, āha- “tasya” ghaṭaviviktapradeśaviśeṣasya “anyatra” sajātīye “anvayasya” anuvṛtterabhāvāt kutaḥ sāmānyātmatā ?| na hyasau deśakālāvasthāniyato viśeṣo'nyamanvetīti| atraivopacayahetumāha- “pratijñārthe”tyādi| yadi hi ghaṭavivikta eva pradeśaviśeṣo dharmmī, tasyaiva ca hetuteṣyate, tadā pratijñāyā yo'rtho dharmmadharmmisamudāyastadekadeśa eva dharmmilakṣaṇo hetuḥ syāt, pratijñārthaikadeśasya ca vyāvṛttito'pi bhedamanu(na)nubhavato hetutvamasiddhamiti| atha mā bhūt eṣa doṣa iti na ghaṭavivikta eva pradeśaviśeṣo heturiṣyate, kintu pradeśamātraṃ ghaṭaviviktatāviśeṣarahitamityata āha-“na ca yatra pradeśamātraṃ tatra ghaṭābhāvaḥ”| saghaṭe'pi pradeśe pradeśamātrasya bhāvādanaikāntiko hetuḥ syāt|

paro'nyathā sāmānyaviśeṣabhāvaṃ darśayannāha- tādṛśau(śe) yādṛśo ghaṭaviviktaḥ kevalaḥ pradeśo'grataḥ sthitastādṛśe sarvvatra pradeśe ghaṭasyābhāva iti kuto'nekāntaḥ ?| tathāvidhapradeśaviśeṣapratītireva ghaṭābhāvapratītistato'nyabhāvatadabhāvayoḥ liṅgaliṅgitā'nupapannetyupadarśayannāha- “nanu tasyaiva” ityādi| yo'sau kevalaḥ pradeśaviśeṣo dharmmitayā'vasthāpitastasyaiva yat kaivalyaṃ kevala ityanena viśeṣaṇenocyate bhavatā, ta deva ghaṭaviraho ghaṭābhāva iti kathyate| sa ca ghaṭaviraho liṅgabhūtasya kevalasya pradeśasya pratipattāveva siddho na tūttarakālaṃ tato'nya eva ākārāntareṇa dhūmādivāgniḥ sidhyati| tataḥ kasyedānīṃ “tatpratipattāveva” sādhyapratītau satyāṃ talliṅgam ?| na kasyacit| jijñāsitasya ghaṭābhāvasya siddheranyasya kasyacidajijñāsitatvāt| kevalapradeśapratipattāveva ghaṭavirahapratītau ca yadetaduttarakālaṃ ‘yatra yatra kevalaḥ pradeśastatra tatra ghaṭavirahaḥ’ iti “anvayasyānugamāmanu( gamanam” anu)saraṇam, tacca nirarthakam ādāveva sādhyapratīteḥ| yata evaṃ tasmādanyabhāvaḥ kevalapradeśalakṣaṇaḥ sādhyasādhanayorbhedābhāvānna sādhanamabhāvasyeti sthitam| tadevaṃ samudāyasādhyatāṃ liṅgasya ca dharmmiṇāsambandhaṃ pratipādayituṃ yaduktaṃ pareṇa- ‘pradeśādidharmmiviśeṣaṇasyābhāvasya sādhanāt’ iti tadapṛthaksiddhidūṣaṇenaiva nirākṛtam|

viṣayaviṣayibhāvena tu sambandhapratipādane niraste paro'nyathā sambandhaṃ sādhyasādhanayorddarśayannāha- “astya”nyabhāvatadabhāvayoḥ sambandho virodhākhyaḥ| tataḥ sambandhasabhdāvādanyabhāvādabhāvasya siddhirbhaviṣyatīti| siddhāntavādī tu sādhyasādhanayorvvirodhamevāsambhāvayan pṛcchati- “kena kasya virodhaḥ” iti| na hyatra sādhyasādhanayorvvirodhaḥ saṃbhavatītyabhiprāyaḥ| paro virodhamabhiprāyanabhijñatayā darśayati- “anyabhāvena” kevalapradeśātmanā “pratiyogino” yasyābhāvaḥ pramātumiṣṭo ghaṭādestasyeti|

parasyaivaṃvādino asambandhābhidhāyitāmādarśayannāha-“kiṃ nu vai pratiyogī” ghaṭādiḥ pramātumiṣṭo yena pratiyoginaḥ prameyatvena liṅgaliṅginorvvirodhaḥ sambandho'bhidhīyate ?| naiva pratiyogī pramātumiṣṭaḥ kintu tadabhāva iti cet, āha- “abhāvastu” pratiyogino yaḥ sādhya .........................................................................................

[kumārilastu manyate bhavāṃśābhdinno']
yamabhāvāṃśastato nānyabhāva eva tadabhāva iti kathaṃ tatpratipattireva tadabhāvapratipattiriti| tathā hyayamabhāvaḥ prāgabhāvādibhedabhinnaḥ, na cāvastuno bhedaḥ sambhavati ato'yaṃ vasturūpa eva| yadāha-

“na cāvastuna ete syurbhedāstenāsya vastutā||” iti|
na ca bhāvāṃśa evābhāvāṃśo yuktaḥ, tasyendriyasaṃyogabalena pratīteḥ, itarapratīteśca tadasaṃyogahetukatvāt| yadāha-

“tatsaṃyoge sadityevaṃ sadrūpatvaṃ pratīyate|
nāstyatredamitītthaṃ tu tadasaṃyogahetukam||” iti|
tatkathaṃ tatpratipattirevāparasya vyavacchedanamiti tannirāsārthamāha| “tasyā”nyasya pradeśasya kevalasya yat tat “kaivalya” mekākikatvamasahāyatā tadeva “aparasya” pratiyogino ghaṭādeḥ “vaikalyam” abhāva “iti” tasmāt “tadanyabhāva eva” bhāvāṃśa eva tvadabhimataḥ “tadabhāvaḥ” pratiyogyabhāvāṃśo na tataḥ pṛthagbhūtaṃ dharmmāntaramityucyate sugatasutaiḥ| tataśca “tatpratipattireva ca” tasyānyabhāvasya pratipattireva ca “tadapratipattiḥ” tasya pratiyogino'pratipattirabhāvapratipattiriti yāvat| evaṃ manyate-yo'yamabhāvāṃśo bhāvāṃśāt pṛthagbhūto vastuno dharmmaḥ parikalpyate sa ghaṭādyabhāvātmakatāṃ tadrūpavaikalyādevānubhavati nānyathā| tacca tadrūpavaikalyamanyavastuno bhāvāṃśasyāpi vidyata eva| tadabhāve hi tasyānyavastutaiva hīyeta| nahi yad yadrūpavikalaṃ na bhavati tat tato'nyatvamanubhavati, yathā tasyaiva svarūpam, tathā cābhāvāṃśo'pi tasya na sidhyet, sarvvaṃ ca viśvamekaṃ dravyaṃ prasajyeta, tataśca sahotpattyādiprasaṅgaḥ, sarvvasya ca sarvvatropayogaḥ syādityavaśyamanyavastuno bhāvarūpatā tadanyābhāvātmikaiva| tathā ca tatpratipattireva tadanyābhāvapratipattiḥ| tatsaṃyoga eva cendriyasya tadanyābhāvasaṃyoga iti kimucyate-

“nāstyatredamitītthaṃ tu tadasaṃyogahetukam|” iti ?|
vikalpāpekṣayoktamiti cet, tadetadabādhakameva| pratyakṣeṇa tadākārotpattyā tadanyabhāvātmake eva vasturūpe pratipanne pāścātyasya yathāgṛhītābhilāpino vikalpasyopagamāt| vistarataścāyamabhāvavicāraḥ pramāṇadvitvasiddhāvabhāvaṃ prameyaṃ pramāṇaṃ ca vicārayatā vihita iti tata evāvavadhārya iti|

avaśyaṃ ca tadanyabhāvapratipattireva tadabhāvapratipattiḥ| tato na vastvasaṅkarasidhyarthaṃ, ‘nāstyatredam’ ityabhāvavyavahārārthaṃ cābhāvapramāṇaparikalpanā yukteti darśayannāha- “anyathā” yadi tatpratipattireva tadabhāvapratipattiriti neṣyate tadā “tasya” anyavastunaḥ svarūpaparicchedena tato'nyasyātadrūpasya “avyavacchede” anirākaraṇe tadabhāvāpratipattau “tatpariccheda eva na syāt”-tasya tadanyavastunaḥ svarūpapratipattireva na syāt| kiṃ kāraṇam ? “tadatadrūpayoḥ” tasya tadanyavastuno yadrūpaṃ pratiniyataṃ sakalatrailokyavilakṣaṇaṃ yaccātadrūpaṃ tadrūpaṃ na bhavati pararūpaṃ tayoḥ “avivekād” avivecanād vivekenāvyavasthāpanādasāṅkaryeṇāprasādhanāt| sakalapararūpāsaṅkirṇṇaṃ hi tadrūpam taccet tatsāmarthyabhāvinā pratyakṣeṇa tathā nānukṛtaṃ kevalaṃ sammugdhākārameva tadutpannaṃ tadā kathantena tatparicchedaḥ syāt ?| na hi yadrūpaṃ yadvastu tadrūpānanukāriṇā jñānena tatparicchedo yukto yathā-śukuśaṅkharūpānanukāriṇā kāmalinaḥ pītaśaṅkhāvabhāsinā jñāneneti| pratiniyatarūpānukāre vā tatparicchedasya kathamanyā'vyavacchedo nāma ?| tataḥ pratiniyatarūpānanukārādeva tadanyāvyavacchedaḥ| tathā ca tatparicchedābhāva iti|

bhavatyevaṃ tataḥ ko doṣaḥ ? ityata āha-“ya eṣa vyavahāraḥ” sarvvajanapratitaḥ “kasyacid” agnyādervvastuno darśanāt “kvaciddeśe” tatsambandhini “prāptyartho” dṛṣṭasyādṛṣṭasya ca “parihārārthaḥ” pravṛttinivṛttilakṣaṇaḥ “sa na syāt”| kiṃ kāraṇam ?| “na hi” yasmād “ayaṃ” pratipattā “analaṃ paśyannapi” saṅkīrṇṇatadadrūpapratibhāsinā pratyakṣeṇa, anyathā'sya darśanarūpatāhāneḥ, tathā hi-asaṅkīrṇṇasyādarśane saṅkīrṇṇamapi yadi na paśyet tadā loṣṭādiprakhyaṃ kathaṃ kasyacidetaddarśanaṃ syāt ?| sa evaṃbhūtaḥ saṅkīrṇṇadarśanavān pratipattā katham “analameva paśyati” na salilādikam ?| “kintu” saṅkīrṇṇarūpavastupratibhāsijñānatayā “salilādikamapi” paśyati| tataḥ kathaṃ “salilārthī tatra” agnimati pradeśe “na pravarteta” ?|

parasya vacanāvakāśamāśaṅkayāha- “anupalambhena” ityādi| analapratibhāsinā hi jñānenānalasvarūpameva pratīyate| yastu salilābhāvaḥ sa tatra salilasyānupalambhena| tato jñānadvayena tadatadrūpayorvvivekālloke pravṛttinivṛttilakṣaṇaḥ pratiniyato vyavahāraḥ sidhyatīti| siddhāntavādyāha- “ko'yamanupalambho nāma” iti| kadācit paro brūyāt salilopalambhavirahamātramityata āha- “yadi salila” ityādi| kumārilasya tu salilopalambhanivṛttimātraṃ tuccharūpamabhāvapramāṇatayā nābhimatameva|

“pratyakṣāderanutpattiḥ pramāṇābhāva ucyate|
sātmano'pariṇāmo vā vijñānaṃ vā'nyavastuni||”
iti vacanāt| kintu yo'sāvātmanaḥ pratiṣedhyavastupratibhāsijñānātmanā'pariṇāmaḥ sa tadanyavastupratibhāsijñānasahacarito'bhyupagantavyo na kevala iti paramabhyupagamayitumasyopanyāsaḥ| tathā cānyavastuvijñānamevābhāvapramāṇamastu, kimapramāṇakasyātmano'pariṇāmākhyena dharmmeṇa parikalpitena ?| na ca tadanyavastuvijñānapariṇāmādanya eva tasyāpariṇāmo nāma bhavato'bhimato bhāvāntarasyaivābhāvatvenopagatatvāt| tulyayogyatārūpasyaikajñānasaṃsarggiṇa eva cānyavastuno vijñānaṃ tathopeyaṃ nānyasya, tajjñānāt pratiyogyabhāvasiddheḥ| na hi rūpajñānādrasādyabhāvapratītiryuktimatī deśādiviprakarṣavato vā| anyavastuvijñānaṃ ca pratiniyatarūparpatibhāsyeva| rūpāntarāvabhāsitve hi tasya salilopalambhābhāva eva na sidhyet| evaṃ ca pratiyogyabhāvaḥ pratyakṣāvabhāsita eva| tadabhāvavyavahāre tvasmadabhimataivānupalabdhirāyāteti pratipādayitumasyopanyāsaḥ| tatra yadi salilopalambhābhāvaḥ tuccharūpo'nupalambhastadā kathamabhāvaḥ kasyacit pratipattiḥ pariccheda iti yāvat, paricchedasya jñānadharmmatvāt| atha na tasya pratipattirūpateṣyate kintu taddhetubhāva ityata āha-“pratipattiheturvvā” iti| nahi sarvvasāmarthyavirahalakṣaṇasyābhāvasya pratipattiṃ prati hetubhāvo yuktaḥ| hetubhāve vā tasyānapekṣitasahakāriṇo nityaṃ tajjñānajananādabhāvajñānamevaikaṃ pratipattuḥ syāt, jñānāntarasyāvakāśa eva na bhavet|

na cājñātasyāsya nāstitājñānajananaṃ yuktamityāha- “tasyāpi” salilopalambhābhāvasya kathaṃ pratipattiḥ ?| athāyaṃ salilopalambhābhāvaḥ svayamapratīta eva salilābhāvapratītiṃ janayati tadā kasyacidapi| tadevāha- “tasya” salilopalambhābhāvasya tato vā salilādanyasyānalādeḥ ‘vijñānaṃ vā'nyavastuni’ ityata ātmano'pariṇāmasya pṛthagavasthāpanāt, tatrāpi tadaṅgīkaraṇe cātmano'pariṇāmasya tadātmakatvānna tato bhedena vyavasthāpyeta| tataśca kasyacidapi tasya tadanyasya vā'pratipattāvapi yadyabhāvaḥ salilādeḥ pratīyate tadā svāpādyavasthāsvapi salilādyabhāvaḥ kiṃ na pratīyate ?| tadāpi tadabhāvaḥ pratīyetetyetadvicāritam pramāṇaviniścaye, tata evāvadhāraṇīyam| vyavadhānādigrahaṇena caitaddarśayatyanyavastuno'pyanyatvaṃ tattulyayogyatārūpāpekṣameva, na tadanapekṣamupeyam| tathā cāsmadupavarṇṇitānupalabdhisiddhiriti| yada caivamuktena prakāreṇānupalambhena salilābhāvapratītirna yujyate'nalapratibhāsinaśca jñānasya pratiniyatākāratā nābhyupagamyate “tasmādayam” analadarśī pratipattā'nalaṃ “paśyannapi” saṅkīrṇṇarūpapratibhāsinā jñānena ‘analo'yaṃ na salilam’ iti nādhyavasyati anadhyavasyaṃśca salilarūpasyāpi pratibhāsanāt tadarthī “na tiṣṭhet” pravarteta “nāpi pratiṣṭheta” salilārthī na pravarteta| tathāhi-salilaṃ nāma taducyate yat sarvvodanyāsantāpādyapanayanakṣamaṃ sakalatadanyarūpāsaṃkīrṇṇapratiniyatākārajñānāvabhāsi| idaṃ tvanyadeva śabalarūpaṃ kimapyavabhāsata iti| “tataśca” pravṛttinivṛttyorvviruddhayoryugapadanuṣṭhātumaśakyatvāt “dustaraṃ vyasanaṃ pratipattuḥ syāt|”

atra parasya vacanāvakāśamāśaṅkayāha- “tata eva” ityādi| na mayā salilopalambhanivṛttimātrāt tu ccharūpāt tadabhāvagatirucyate, yathoktadoṣaprasaṅgāt| kintu yadetadekasya kevalasyānalasya darśanaṃ tata evānyasya tatrāpratibhāsamānasya salilasyābhāvagatirbhavati ‘vijñānaṃ vā'nyavastuni’ iti vacanāt|

siddhāntavādyāha- “kathamekam” ityādi| kena punaḥ sāmarthyena tadekadarśanam “anyābhāvaṃ pratyāyayati ?”| tathāhi-tasmin dṛśyamāne tadevāstītyavagacchatu, tadanyattu nāstīti kimiti pratyetīti| “tasyaiva” paridṛśyamānasyānalādeḥ “kevalasya ” salilāsaṃsṛṣṭarūpasya “darśanād” analajñāne pratibhāsanāt ‘salilaṃ nāsti’ iti niścayaḥ sañjāyate| tathāhi-anala iva salilamapi yadi tatrābhaviṣyat tadapyanalavad darśane pratyayabhāsiṣyata tayoḥ svajñānaṃ pratyaviśiṣṭatvād yogyatāyā naikasya pratibhāso yuktaḥ| tasmādekapratibhāsanamanyābhāvanāntarīyakaṃ ityanyābhāve tato jñānamutpadyate anyavastuni ca vijñānaṃ nāstīti jñānaṃ janayati| tathā'nyad vasut pararūpāsaṃkīrṇṇasvabhāvatayaiva tathocyate| tadrūpatayaiva ca tajjñānamanyat pratiyadevaṃ vyapadiśyate'nyathā tadayogādityanyapratipattireva tadabhāvavikalpaheturiti siddhāntavādyāha- “idameva” ityādi| nanvasmābhiridameva prāgabhihitaṃ “tayoḥ satoḥ naikarūpaniyatā pratipattiḥ asambhavāt” ityādibhirvvacanaiḥ| tato yadevānyāsaṃsarggiṇaḥ kevalasya pratibhāsanaṃ tadeva tadanyābhāvasyāpi, tasyaiva kevalasya tadanyābhāvātmakatvādanyasya cābhāvāṃśasya nirastatvāt| tataḥ pratyakṣāvabhāsitatvāt tadabhāvasya tabdalāt pāścātyaṃ vyavahārapravartanarūpaṃ nāstitājñānaṃ vikalpakamājāyate| na tu tenāpratipannaṃ kiñcidavagamyate, yatastadanyavastuni vijñānaṃ pratyakṣātmakamapyanavagate tadanyābhāve jñānaṃ janayat pṛthagabhāvapramāṇatayā vyavasthāpyeta| tathā hi- tadanyākāraśūnya eva tadekajñānākāraḥ saṃvedyate| tatastatsaṃvedanameva tadabhāvasaṃvedanam| nahi vikalpajñānasyāpi tadākāraśūnyarūpasaṃvedanādanyattadabhāvasaṃvedanaṃ nāma| kevalamasya vikalparūpataivātiricyate| tato yathā nirvvikalpajñānāvasite kvacidanale ‘analo'trāsti’ iti pāścātyo vikalpo vyavahārapravartanamātraṃ na tataḥ pṛthak pramāṇaṃ yathoktaṃ prāk, tathā nāstitājñānamapi vikalpakaṃ tatphaṃladvāreṇa vā'nyavastuvijñānaṃ na pratyakṣāt pṛthagabhāvākhyaṃ pramāṇamiti| tasmād yadevāsmābhirabhihitaṃ tadanyābhāvapratītiṃ prati, tadeva tvayā'pyabhidhīyata iti kasmāt paruṣamivābhāti yatastadanabhyupagamena pṛthagabhāvākhyaṃ pramāṇamabhyupagatamityupahasati| tathā hyagatyedānīṃ tvayocyate na madhyasthatayā anyathedameva kiṃ na pūrvvamevābhihitam ?, yata ālajālabhidhānenā''tmā parikleśita ityupasaṃharannāha-“ tasmāt tīrādarśineva” ityādi| yathā kila vahanārūḍhairvvarṇigbhiḥ śakunirmucyate api nāma tīraṃ drakṣyatīti| sa yadā sarvvataḥ paryaṭaṃstīreṃ nāsādayati tadā vahanamevāgacchati tadvadetadapi draṣṭavyam| yataścāvaśyabhyupagamanīyo'yaṃ pakṣastasmānna kiñcidanayā'vidyamānapratiṣṭhānayā diśaḥ pratipattyā prayojanam|

tadevaṃ parasyānyabhāvatadabhāvayorliṅgaliṅgibhāvamicchataḥ sambandhābhāvādasāvayuktaḥ iti pratipādite pareṇa ‘asati sambandhe'nyabhāvagatyā'pi tadabhāvagatirnna syāt’ iti codite ‘na vai kutaścit sambandhād’ ityādyabhihitam| ataḥ ‘anyabhāva eva tadabhāvo'nyabhāvagatireva ca tadabhāvagatiḥ’ iti prasādhayatā kumārilaparikalpitaḥ kasyacidabhāvaniścayārthamabhāvapramāṇavādaḥ prasaṅgato nirastaḥ samprati tu-

“vastvasaṅkarasiddhiśca tatprāmāṇyasamāśritā”
ityetadāhatya nirākartuṃ pūrvvapakṣamutthāpayannāha - “yadyekaparicchedādevaḥ” ityādi| yadi hi “ekasya” kevalasya paricchedādanyasya “vyavacchedaḥ” pratiṣedhaḥ sidhyati tadā sarvvasyā a(syā)nyasyā'viśeṣeṇaiva “tatra” deśe yatrāsāvekaḥ paridṛśyate tatrābhāvasiddhirbhavet, na tu viśeṣaparigraheṇa tulyā svajñānajananaṃ prati yogyāvasthā yasya tasyaiveti| tathā hi-asau yathā tulyayogyatārūpapadārthaviviktarūpa upalabhyate, tadekākārapratiniyamāt tajjñānaśca, tathā tadatulyayogyatārūpapadārthaviviktatmako'pi| tataśca tadviviktākāratayā tadanyābhavasādhane viśeṣābhāvāt pradeśarūpajñānaṃ ghaṭābhavamiva rasādyabhāvamapi sādhayet, na vā ghaṭābhāvamapīti|

kiñca, yadetad ‘upalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasyānupalabdhirabhāvasādhanī’ iti viśeṣaṇamuktaṃ tacca na vaktavyam| kiṃ kāraṇam ? yato ye'pyanupalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptāsteṣāmapi tatra deśe tadekākāratayā jñānasya vyavacchedo bhavatyeva| tathā hi-yathopalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptāstadekākāravati jñāne na pratibhāsante tataśca vyavacchidyante tathā'nupalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptā apīti kim ‘upalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasya” ityanena viśeṣaṇeneti| evaṃ pūrvvapakṣe vyavasthite yadi tadanyavyavacchedaḥ-tataḥ pṛthakkaraṇamanyatvena vyavasthāpanamabhimataṃ tadabhyupagamyata eva| atha taddeśakālayorabhāvaḥ, tadayuktam, yena hi sāmarthyena tulyayogyatārūpasyopalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasya cābhāvaṃ sādhayati na tatsāmarthyamatulyayogyatārūpe'nupalbdhilakṣaṇaprāpte vā sambhavati| ‘tayoḥ satornnaikarūpaniyatā pratipattiḥ asambhavāt’ ityevaṃ hi tadabhāvasādhanam| na caitadanyatra sambhavatīti pratipādayitum “ekātmaparicchedāt” ityādinopakramate| yat puro'vasthitaṃ pratyakṣe'vabhāsate tasyaikasyātmanaḥ pratiniyatasya rūpasya paricchedāt tadākārotpattyā vidhivikalpotpādanena ca yaḥ “tadanyaḥ” tato'nyastadvayatiriktastasya sarvvasya ya “ātmā” svabhāvastato “vyavacchedo” bhedanaṃ pṛthakkaraṇamanyatvasādhanamasaṅkīrṇṇarūpatāpratyāyanaṃ bhavati| kathaṃ punarekātmaparicchedādeva tasya tadanyātmano vyavacchedaḥ pratyakṣeṇa kriyate ?, yāvatā pratyakṣaṃ puro'vasthitapadārthasāmarthyabhāvi tadrūpameva pratipadyatām| yattu tadvayatiriktamaśeṣapadārthajātaṃ tadātmanastasya puro'vasthitasya kathaṃ tavdyavacchedakam ? ataḥ tavdyavacchedārthamabhāvapramāṇamabhyupeyam, yato-

“vastvasaṃkarasiddhiśca tatprāmāṇyasamāśritā” iti|
ata āha- “tadātmaniyatapratibhāsajñānād” iti| yataḥ puro'vasthitasyaikasya vastunaḥ pararūpāsaṃkīrṇṇa ātmā, sarvvabhāvānāṃ svabhāvata eva svasvabhāvavyavasthiteḥ pararūpeṇāsaṃkīrṇṇasvabhāvatvāt| anyathā kathamabhāvapramāṇato'pyasāṃkaryameṣāṃ sidhyet ?| saṃkīrṇṇarūpāṇāmasāṅkaryasādhane tasya bhrāntatāprasaṅgāt| tasmin pararūpāsaṃkīrṇṇe svabhāvata eva tadātmaniyato yaḥ pratibhāsaḥ pararūpapratibhāsāsaṃkīrṇṇaḥ tadekapadārthasāmarthyabhāvini pratyakṣe pararūpapratibhāsāyogāt tasya bhrāntatāpattyā pratyakṣātāhāneḥ| taduktam- “taddhayarthasamarthyenotpadyamānaṃ tadrūpamevānukuryāt” iti| tasya tadātmaniyatapratibhāsaya jñānāt pratyakṣeṇa svasaṃvittyā saṃvedanāt| tatsaṃvedanameva hi pratyakṣasyātadrūpād “vyavacchedanaṃ” pṛthakkaraṇaṃ tabdalenaiva ca pāścātyaḥ ‘anyātmakametanna bhavati’ ityasāṃkaryavasthāpratyayo vikalpakaḥ saṃjāyate gṝhītagrāhī| na tenāpūrvvaṃ kiñcit pratīyate, pararūpāsaṃkīrṇṇasyātmanaḥ pratyakṣeṇaiva tadākārānukāriṇā paricchedāditi|

yadi nāma tadātmaniyatapratibhāsajñānaṃ tathāpi kathamanyātmanaḥ tasya pṛthakkaraṇam ? ityata āha- “na hi tadātma”ityādi| yasmāttasya vastuno ya ātmā pararūpāsaṃkīrṇṇaḥ sa tadanyasya śeṣasya vastuna ātmā na bhavati, sarvvasya tato'nyasvabhāvatvāt, anyathā tadanyatvahāneriti| tasmāttadātmaniyatapratibhāsajñānameva tadanyebhyo nivarttanam| nahi jñānenārtho haste gṛhītvā'nyato nivarttanīyaḥ| kevalamanyarūpāsaṃkīrṇṇasyaikasyātmano'nukaraṇamevāsyānyato nivarttanamucyata iti| athānyātmānaḥ svaviṣayaṃ na nivarttayet, tadā'sya viṣayasyānyātmanaḥ sakāśādavyavacchede pṛthagavyavasthāpane parātmano'pi tatra paricchedaḥ syāt, anyathā tadaparicchedasyaivaikātmaparicchedātmanastannivarttanarūpatā syāt| tataścāvyavacchede'nyātmanastatparicchedaprasaṅgāt pravṛttinivṛttyorabhāva iti pūrvvaḥ prasaṅgo ‘na hyayamanalaṃ paśyannapi’ ityādikaḥ|

na kevalamanyātmanastannivarttayati tadātmano'pyaśeṣamanyaditi darśayannāha- “taṃ ca” agrataḥ sthitaṃ deśakālasvabhāvāvasthāniyataṃ tadanyadeśādibhyo vyāvṛttātmanaḥ svahetubhyaḥ evāsya bhāvāt, “tadātmanā” deśādiniyatenātmanā tathāvidhasvabhāvasyaivānukārādupalabhamānā buddhiḥ “tathātvapracyutim” anyadeśakālasvabhāvāvasthatām “asya” svaviṣayasya “vyavacchinatti” tataḥ pṛthakkaroti| kasmātpunaranyadeśāditāṃ tataḥ pṛthagavasthāpayati ityata āha- “evaṃ hi” yasmādanyadeśatādestataḥ pṛthakkaraṇe sati taddeśādiniyataḥ padārthaḥ paricchinno bhavati, tadrūpasyaivānukārād| yadyanyathābhāvo'nyadeśāditā tadrūpānanukārāvdyavacchinnaḥ-bhavati tathātvaṃ ca taddeśādiniyatatvaṃ ca, tadā tasyaiva dṛśyamānasya bhavati nānyasyānyadeśādimataḥ| yata evam “iti” tasmādanyathābhūtādanyadeśādimatastathābhūtaṃ taddeśādimaṃtaṃ “vyavacchindatyeva” nivarttayantyeva tat paricchinattīti pūrvvakasyopasaṃhāraḥ| tathā “tathābhūtādanyathābhūtaṃ vyavacchindatyeva” iti dvitīyasyopasaṃhāraḥ kārya iti| “evam” uktena nyāyena “ekasya” pramāṇasya pratyakṣasyānumānasya vā tasyāpyevameva svaviṣayaparicchedād “vṛttiḥ” pravṛttiḥ sarvvabhāvān “dvairāśye” tattve'nyatve ca “vyavasthāpayati”| tatastatparicchedakapramāṇabalenaivāsāṅkaryasiddhiḥ| kiṃ tadarthikayā'pyabhāvakalpanayeti ?|

nanu ca vikalpavyāpāra eṣa ‘idamanyātmakaṃ na bhavati anyathaitadātmakam’ iti| pratyakṣaṃ ca nirvvikalpakamiṣyate tat kathamasāṃkaryasiddhistataḥ ? ityata āha- “tasyānvaye” tyādi| taddhi pratyakṣaṃ vidhipratiṣedhavikalpau yadā svaviṣaye janayati tadaivāsya sāphalyam, tadaiva ca pramāṇamiṣyate nānyadā ata evaikasyārthasvabhāvasyāpratipannāṃśābhāvāt sarvvātmanā paricchede'pi bhrāntikāraṇasabhdāvāt kṣaṇikatādāvanvayavyatirekabuddhī janayitumasāmarthyāt tatrāsya prāmāṇyaṃ neṣyata iti|

syānmatam- dvairāśyasādhane'pyasāṃkaryasiddhyarthā mā bhūdabhāvapramāṇakalpanā kintu prakārāntarābhāvasiddhyarthā bhaviṣyati| na hi tadabhāvasiddhau pratyakṣasya kaścid vyāpāraḥ pratipādita iti ata āha “tadvyatirikte”tyādi| tasmāt paridṛśyamānād vyatiriktasyāśeṣasya vastuno vyavacchedena tataḥ pṛthakkaraṇenānyatvena yā vyāptistatsādhanādeva prakārāntarasya tattvānyatvabahirbhūtasyābhāvaḥ sidhyati| tatastadarthaṃmapi nābhāvapramāṇakalpanā yukteti|

atha matam-sarvvasyāparidṛṣṭasya dṛśyamānādanyatayā vyāptiṃ naivaṃ pratyakṣaṃ sādhayati tat kutastṛtīyarāśyabhāvaḥ pratyakṣata eva syāt, yato'bhāvaprāmāṇyakalpanā vyarthā bhavedityata āha- “tasya” tṛtīyarāśitayā kalpyamānasya tato dṛṣṭādanyatayā vyāptyabhāve “tena” pratyakṣeṇa “tato”'rthāt svaviṣayasya “avyavacchedā” dapṛthakkaraṇāt, tadarthasya ca rāśyantaratvena kalpyamānasya svaviṣayādavyavacchedāt apṛthakkaraṇāt punarapi bhāvasya svaviṣayasyāparicchedaprasaṅgāt| sa hi tadviṣayaḥ sakalapararūpāsaṃkīrṇṇātmā yadi tenātmanā na paricchinnaḥ kathaṃ tena tasya paricchedaḥ ?| tenātmanā paricchede vā kathaṃ sarvvasya tadanyatayā vyāptyasādhanam ? anyathaikasyāpi tadanyatvaṃ na syāt, nimittasya samānatvāditi| yata evaṃ “tasmāt” kvacidvastuni pramāṇaṃ pratyakṣādikaṃ pravṛttaṃ tadvastu pratiniyatenātmanā paricchinatti, tato'nyattadrūpavikalaṃ vyavacchinatti, tadanyatvena vyavasthāpanāt| tṛtīyasya ca tattvānyatvabahirbhūtasya prakārasyābhāvaṃ sūcayati, sarvvasyānyatayā vyāptisādhanāt, tadviruddhasya vā sarvvavastuno dvaividhyasya sādhanāditi|

evamekasya pramāṇasya vyāpāra eṣo'nantarokta iti tamevopasaṃhṛtya sukhapratipattaye darśayannāha- “tathāhi” kvacidvastuni “pramāṇaṃ” pratyakṣādi pravṛttaṃ “tadeva” vastu tadanyasmāt “pārūpād vyavacchinatti” tataḥ pṛthakkaroti tadasaṃkīrṇṇarūpatayā pratipadyate, paramārthatastasya tadrūpatvāt yathāvastu ca pratyakṣeṇa rūpānukārāt| kimiti pararūpāvdyavacchinatti ?| tasyaiva pararūpavikalasyaikarūpasya paricchedāt| tathā “tadanyadeva ca” tasmād dṛśyamānādanyadeva ca vyavacchinatti| kutaḥ ?| “tasmāt” svaviṣayāt| na kevalaṃ svaviṣayaṃ parato vyavacchinatti, paramapi svaviṣayād iti| kuta etad ?| anyasya pararūpasya tatra khālambane'paricchedādavaśyamevāparicchinnasya paricchinnādanyatvaṃ bhavati| yata evamataḥ “tad” eva pramāṇamekavastuparicchedakaṃ prakārāntarābhāvaṃ sādhayati, nābhāvākhyam| kuta etat ?| tasmiṃ dṛśyamāne vastuni dṛṣṭatadanyatvena tasyānyasya tatrāparicchidyamānasyānyatvaṃ tadanyatvaṃ dṛṣṭāt tadanyatvaṃ “dṛṣṭatadanyatvaṃ” tena sarvvasya tavdyatiriktasya vyavasthāpanānna a(panena a) tadanyasyaiva ca yadanyanna bhavati puro'vasthitaṃ sakalaparabhāvavyāvṛttaṃ tasyaiva tattvena dṛśyamānaprakāratayā vyavasthāpanāditi|

amumeva nyāyamanyatrāpyatidiśannāha-“etena kramākramādayaḥ” ityādi| etena anantaroktena nyāyena pratiniyataikapadārtharūpānukāriṇī buddhirupajāyamānā tadviparītarūpaṃ sarvvaṃ svaviṣayād vyavacchindatī dvairāśyaṃ tṛtīyaprakārābhāvaṃ ca sādhayatīti ye kecidanyonyavyacchedarūpāḥ kramākramanityānityādayaḥ te vyākhyātāḥ| tathā hi-kāryasya kramamananyasahāyatāṃ pratiyatyeva buddhistasyākramaṃ kāryāntarasāhityaṃ tataḥ pṛthakkaroti| tataḥ kramākramatayā dvaitasiddheḥ tṛtīyasya prakārasya sambhavo nirasto bhavati| kramabhāvavyatirekiṇaḥ sarvvasya kāryajanmanaḥ tadanyatayā dvitīyaprakāratayā'vasthānāt| evamudayānantaradhvaṃsitā kṣaṇikatocyate iti pratīyatī vyavasthāpanākāla eva buddhistadviparītarūpatāyāḥ svaviṣayādapākaraṇāt tato'nyatvena prakārāntare'vasthāpanād rāśyantarābhāva iti|

tadevamekapramāṇanibandhanāmasāṅkaryasiddhiṃ pratipādyopasaṃharannāha- “tadevam” uktena nyāyena “ekasya” pratiniyatātmana upalambhāt tasyopalabhyamānasya yastato'nyastattulyayogyatārūpastavdiparīto vā tadrūpavikalastadātmano “vyavacchedaḥ” pṛthakkaraṇaṃ tasyopalabhyamānasyānupalabhyamānasvabhāvād rūpāntareṇa pratibhāsanāt| tathā tasya svaviṣayasya tadanyātmatāyā bhāvapradhānatvānnirddeśasya “vyavacchedo bhavati” asāṅkaryaṃ sidhyati|

tad yadyetadaviśeṣeṇānyasya sarvvasya tannābhāvasiddhiḥ syādityatrābhimataṃ tadā siddhasādhanam, yataḥ sarvvamaviśeṣeṇaiva tadekākārayā budhyā tadrūpavikalaṃ svaviṣayādavacchidyate, sarvvasyānyarūpasya tatrāpratibhāsanāt| atha taddeśakālayorabhāvaḥ sarvvasya tadviparītarūpasya vyavacchedo'bhimataḥ sa na yukta iti darśayati-“na taddeśakālayoḥ” yatrāsau pratiniyatātmā sakalatrailokyavilakṣaṇaḥ padārtha upalabhyate tatra sarvvasyānyasya bhāvasya tattulyayogyatārūpasyetarasya vā vyavacchedaḥ pratiṣedhaḥ| yena hi kāraṇena tattulyayogyatārūpasya tatrāpratibhāsamānasya pratiṣedhastasmin sati tadekarūpaniyatāyāḥ pratipatterasaṃbhavāt tadabhāvanāntarīyikā sā bhāvantī tatpratiṣedhaṃ gamayatīti tatkāraṇamanupalabdhilakṣaṇaprāpte tadatulyayogyatārūpe ca na sambhavatīti kathaṃ tadabhāvaḥ sidhyet|

etadevopasaṃharannāha-“tasmādatadātmā” ca sarvvastadviparītarūpastadekākārayā buddhyā prasādhitaḥ syāt “taddeśakālaśca” tasya pratibhāsamānasya yau deśakālau tau yasya, sa ca syāt| kiṃvat ?| rasarūpādivaditi| nahi rūpapratibhāsinā jñānena tadrūpavikalasya rasasya svaviṣayāt pṛthakkaraṇe'pi tadasāṃkaryasādhane'pi taddeśakālayorabhāvaḥ sidhyati| tataśca kathaṃ sarvvasyātulyayogyāvasthāsyāpi tatrābhāvaḥ syāt ?, upalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasyeti viśeṣaṇaṃ vā nocyeta| yata evaṃ “tasmāt” kvacit kadācit kasyacidabhāvasiddhiryathoktādevānupalambhād upalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptasya tattulyayogyatārūpopalambhātmanaścetyevaṃrūpāt, na tu sāmānyena yathā''huḥ pare-

“pramāṇapañcakaṃ yatra vasturūpe na jāyate|
vastusattāvabodhārthaṃ tatrābhāvapramāṇatā||” iti|
na hyanupalabdhilakṣaṇaprāpte pramāṇapañcakāpravṛttāvapi tadabhāvaḥ sidhyati, satyapi tasmin svabhāvādiviprakarṣeṇa pramāṇapañcakāpravṛttisambhavāditi|

tadevaṃ prāsaṅgikaṃ parisamāpayya yaduktaṃ pareṇa ‘sa evānyabhāvastadviṣayā copalabdhiḥ tadabhāvasya kiṃ na sādhanam’ iti tatrānyabhāvasya tadabhāvaṃ prati liṅgatve niraste tadviṣayāyā upalabdhernirākurvvannāha-“anyābhāvaviṣaye”tyādi| yatpunaruktam- ‘anyabhāvaviṣayopalabdhistadabhāvasya kinna sādhanam’ iti sā tadabhāvasya sādhikeṣṭaivāsmākam, na tu liṅgatvena yathoktavānasi| kiṃ kāraṇam ?| yataḥ tatrāpyanyabhāvaviṣayāyāmupalabdhāva'bhāvasya pṛthaganyabhāvāt sādhyatve kalpyamāne sambandhābhāvasya tadabhāvena tulyatvāt| na hi tasyā api anyabhāvarūpāyāḥ tadabhāvena kaścidekārthasamavāyādirūpaḥ sambandho'stīti|

apṛthaksiddherityasyāpi tulyatāṃ darśayannāha- “liṅgāvirbhāve” tyādi| yeyamanyabhāvaviṣayā upalabdhirlliṅgatayocyate tasyāstadviviktapradeśākārāyā “avirbhāvakāla eva” janmakāle pratītikāla eva vā tadabhāvasiddheśca| tathā hi- tatpratibhāsaviviktānyabhāvapratibhāsabuddhisaṃvedanameva tadabhāvasaṃvedanamiti| tadeva sādhayati-na hyanyasya tadviviktasya bhāvaṃ pratipadya pratipattā punaruttarakālaṃ tatpratipatteranyabhāvapratipattestadabhāvenānvayavyatirekau prasādhya pratibandhasādhakena pramāṇena tadabhāvaṃ pratipadyate| kiṃ tarhi ?| tadanyaṃ tadviviktarūpaṃ pratipadyamāna eva tasya pratiyogino'bhāvaṃ pratipadyate, tasyaiva tadabhāvātmakatvāt| tathā hi-saghaṭapradeśāsaṃkīrṇṇarūpasya kevalapradeśasya darśanameva ghaṭābhāvadarśanam| nahi ‘ghaṭo'tra nāsti’ ‘ghaṭavānayaṃ na bhavati’ ‘saghaṭādanyaḥ’ ityarthabhedaḥ kaścit| tataḥ saghaṭādanyatayā kevalapradeśasya darśanameva ghaṭābhāvadarśanamiti| ‘ghaṭo'tra nāstī’ ti jñānaṃ gṛhītagrāhitayā smṛtireveti| kathaṃ jñāyate iti cet| darśanānantaramanvayavyatirekasādhanalakṣaṇena vyavadhānena vinā ‘idaṃ ghaṭaviviktaṃ pradeśavastvasti’ ‘idaṃ tu ghaṭavastu nāsti’ iti pāścātyena vikalpadvayena vyavasthāpanāt| tato nānvayavyatirekānusaraṇamatrāstīti|

kiñca-dṛṣṭāntāsiddhe svātmanyabhāvaviṣayopalabdhistadabhāvasya sādhanaṃ| tadeva vyatirekamukhena darśayati - “tacca tasya” ityādi| ihāpyastyevānvaya iti cet, āha- “na hyevaṃ śakyam” ityādi| kasmānna śakya darśayitum ?| tadekopalabdheḥ tasyaikasyānanyasaṃsarggiṇo yopalabdhirvviśeṣarūpā tasyāḥ kvacidapyanyatrābhāvāt| atha tadviviktopalabdhisāmānyaṃ heturūcyate-yatra yatra ghaṭaviviktabhūtalopalabdhistatra tatra ghaṭābhāvo yathā pūrvvānubhūte ghaṭavivikte pradeśa ityāha- “sāmānyena pradarśane kriyamāṇe” dṛṣṭānte'pi pūrvvānubhūtaghaṭavivikte pradeśe ghaṭābhāvasya prasādhakaṃ pratyakṣādikaṃ pramāṇāntaramanyabhāvaviṣayopalabdhernāsti, kiṃ tu saiva tadanyabhāvopalabdhiḥ sādhyadharmmasya tadabhāvalakṣaṇasya sādhikā| sā ca yathā sādhyadharmmiṇi tadabhāvasiddhye dṛṣṭāntamapekṣate tathā dṛṣṭānte'pi| tathā, tatrāpi tadanyatrāpītyanavasthā dṛṣṭāntānām iti| anavasthāyāṃ cāpratipattiḥ sarvvatra tadabhāvasya| yata evaṃ “tasmānna” kutaścilliṅgāttadanyabhāvāttadupalabdhervvā tadabhāvasiddhiriti| yadi tadanyabhāvastadabhāvaṃ na sādhayati, kiṃ punarlliṅgatayā sādhayati ?, ityata āha- “so'nyabhāvaḥ” pratyakṣalakṣaṇena-pratyakṣasyaiva vivakṣitopalambhādanyatvenānupalambhatvāt| tallakṣaṇenānupalambhena siddhaḥ sannabhāvavyavahāraṃ sādhayet, karmmasthakriyāpekṣāyāṃ tadanyabhāvasyānupalabdhirūpatvāt| kva punarasāvabhāvavyavahāraṃ sādhayet ?| mūḍhapratipattau sādhyāyāṃ| yastvamūḍho viṣayapratipattau viṣayiṇaṃ smaratyeva tasyābhāvavyavahāraḥ pratyakṣanibandhana eveti na tatrānupalabdherliṅgateti sucarccitamevānyatretīhālaṃ prasaṅgeneti|

tadevamanupalabdheraśeṣavipratipattinirākaraṇena svarūpamavasthāpyaprabhedanirddeśārthamāha- “seyaṃ yathoktā tridhā'nupalabdhiḥ”| katham ?| siddhe tatprasādhakena pramāṇena kāryakāraṇabhāve sati kāraṇasyānupalabdhiḥ| kīdṛśasya ?| siddhābhāvasya| tathā, vyāpyavyāpakabhāvasiddhau satyāṃ tatprasādhanapramāṇabalenaiva siddhābhāvasyaiva vyāpakasya nānyasya vyāpakānupalabdherevāsiddhatāprasaṅgād| yathoktā svabhāvānupalabdhiśceti| evaṃ trividhā'nupalabdhiḥ| kathaṃ punaḥ kāraṇavyāpakayorabhāvavyavahāraḥ sidhyati yatastayoḥ siddhābhāvatocyata ityāha- “tatra kāraṇavyāpakayorapi” na kevalaṃ yasya sākṣādabhāvavyavahāraḥ sādhyate| svabhāvānupalabdhau “svabhāvasyāsavdhyavahārasya siddhiranyasya” tadviviktasya bhāvasiddhiryā saivāsavdyavahārasiddhihetutvādevamucyate| “sa” kāraṇavyāpakābhāvaḥ “tathāsiddho”'nyabhāvasiddhyā pratyakṣarūpayā siddho'bhāvavyavahāraḥ kāryavyāpyayoḥ pratiṣedhyayoḥ| yadā'nayorvvirūpaviṣayatayā saviśeṣāṇāmupalabdhirna sidhyati “tadā'bhāvamabhāvavyavahāraṃ vā sādhayati”| samuccayārtho vāśabdaḥ| atha kiṃ svabhāvānupalabdhāvapyabhāvo liṅgatayā sādhyata ityāha- “svabhāvānupalabdhau tu” ityādi| “abhāvavyavahāra eva”, nābhāvo'pi tasya pratyakṣasiddhatvāt|

atra parasya vacanāvakāśamāśaṅkayāha- “yadi” tarhi “kāraṇavyāpakau” siddho'savdyavahāro yayoḥ tau santau| kena ?| “tadanyasya” kāraṇavyāpakaviviktasya bhāvasya siddhiryā pratyakṣatmikā tadrūpayā'nupalabdhyā, anyasya kāryasya vyāpyasya vā'bhāvamabhāvavyavahāraṃ ca sādhayataḥ| sā cānyabhāvopalabdhistayoḥ kāraṇavyāpakayorupalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptāveva satyāmasavdyavahārasya sādhikā nānyathā ityevamiṣyamāṇe sati kathaṃ tayoḥ kāraṇavyāpakānupalabdhyoḥ parokṣe'rthe viṣaye prayogaḥ| yadā kāryasvabhāvahetvorvyatirekaprayogaḥ kriyate-yatra yatrāgnirnāsti tatra tatra dhūmo'pi nāsti, tathā yatra yatra vṛkṣo nāsti kṣaṇikatā vā tatra tatra śiṃśapā nāsti sattvaṃ vā ityaśeṣapadārthaparigraheṇa vyatirekaprayoge sati| nahi tadāgnivṛkṣavyatiriktāḥ sarvve'rthāḥ pratyakṣatā(kṣā) akṣaṇikatā vā| tataśca kathaṃ tadviviktopalabdhilakṣaṇānupalabdhiḥ pratiyogino vopalabdhilakṣaṇaprāptatā siddhā ?| tathā ca kathamaśeṣopasaṃhāreṇa vyāptyā kāryasvabhāvahetvo'rvyatirekaḥ sidhyet ?| tadasiddhau vā kathamanayorggamakatvam ?| tasmāt kvacidadarśanamātrādeva vyatireka eṣṭavyaḥ, kvacicca darśanamātrādanvayaḥ| tathā ca pratibandhaghoṣaṇā'narthiketi manyate paraḥ|

siddhāntavādyāha- “naiva” parokṣe'rthe kāraṇavyāpakānupalabdhyoḥ “prayogo” vyatirekopadarśanakāle “pramāṇatayā” kāraṇasya vyāpakasya vā'nupalabdhiḥ pramāṇabhūtā naiva prayujyate| kasmāt ?| “liṅgasya” kāraṇavyāpakānupalabdhilakṣaṇasya tadabhāvalakṣaṇasya vā “aniścayāt” tadanupalabdhyoḥ sandeharūpatvāt tadabhāvasya ca sandigdhatvāt| kathaṃ tarhi tadā'nayoḥ prayoga iṣyate ? ityāha- “kevalam” ityādi| kāraṇavyāpakayorhikāryakāraṇabhāvaprasādhakena pūrvvoktena pramāṇena vyāpyavyāpakabhāvasādhakena ca tadutpattilakṣaṇe tādātmyalakṣaṇe ca sambandhe sādhite siddhasambandhayoryadyabhāvo yatra yatrā bhāvaḥ syāt parasyāpi kāryasya vyāpyasya vā'vaśyaṃ niyamenābhāvo'nyathā'hetukatvaprasaṅgāt, niḥsvabhāvatāprasaṅgācca| taddvāreṇa pratibandhaprasādhake pramāṇe smṛtiḥ kathaṃ nāma syādityetasyārthasya darśanārthamete kāraṇavyāpakānupalabdhī prayujyete iti| darśanādarśanabalena tu sādhane yatraivaikadarśane paro dṛṣṭo'darśane vā na dṛṣṭaḥ tatraiva tasya bhāvo'bhāvo vā bhavatu sarvvatra tu kasmād bhavati ?| na hyapratibaddhātmanāṃ gavāśvādīnāṃ kvacit tathābhāvadarśane'pi sarvvatra tathābhāvo bhavati, puruṣasya tu sarvvadā kvacidekabhāvābhāvayoraparasya bhāvābhāvādarśanaṃ yadṛcchāsaṃvādaḥ sambhāvyeta asati pratibandhe| tathā cāha-

“deśādibhedādṛśyante bhinnā dravyeṣu śaktayaḥ|
tatraikadṛṣṭayā nānyatra yuktastabhdāvaniścayaḥ||” iti|
tasmādavaśyaṃ pratibandhaḥ sādhyasādhanayorabhyupagantavyaḥ| sa evānvayavyatirekaprayogābhyāṃ sucanīyaḥ| na cāsau vyāptyā'nvayavyatirekopadarśanamantareṇa khyāpayituṃ śakyata iti ‘yatra yatra’ iti sakalapadārthaparigraheṇa khyāpyate| pratibandhe hi pramāṇasiddhe satyavaśyameva yatra yatra kāryaṃ tatra tatra kāraṇam, yatra yatra tadabhāvaḥ tatra tatra ca kāryasyāpyabhāvo'nyathā kāraṇamantareṇa kāryasya bhāve tasyāhetutaiva syāt| tataśca nityaṃ sattvādiprasaṅgaḥ| tathā yatra yatra yatsvabhāvastatra tatra tadbhāvaḥ anyathā tasya nairātmyameva syāditi vyāptyaivānvayavyatirekopadarśane pratibandhaḥ khyāpayituṃ śakyate nānyatheti prāgeva vistarato vipañcitam|

[ 4. hetostrairūpyatraividhyayorhetvābhāsatvasya copasaṃhāraḥ|]
evaṃ kāryasvabhāvānupalabdhilakṣaṇe eva pakṣadharmme tatsādhakapramāṇasabhdāvādanvayavyatirekasabhdāvo nānyatreti pratipādyopasaṃharannāha-“iti” eṣa eva svabhāvakāryānupalabdhilakṣaṇaḥ pakṣadharmmo'nvayavyatirekavān pratibandhasabhdāvāt| yataśvānvayavyatirekavān pratibandhaprasādhakapramāṇasabhdāvāduktena nyāyena “iti” tasmāt “tadaṃśena vyāpto”'nvayavyatirekaniścayenaiva tadaṃśavyāpterniścayād yathoktaṃ prāk, tataśca tadaṃśavyāptivacanāt trilakṣaṇa eva “trirūpa eva” trividha eva heturggamako nānyalakṣaṇo'nyo vā yathoktatrairūpyasabhdāve rūpāntarasya vaiyarthyāt yathoktatrairūpyābhāve ca rūpāntarakalpanāyāmapyavyabhicārābhāvenāgamakatvāt| kasmāt trilakṣaṇa eva trividha eva heturggamako nānyalakṣaṇo'nyo veti darśayati “svasādhyadharmmāvyabhicārād” iti trilakṣaṇasyaiva svasādhyadharmmāvyabhicārāt| svasādhyadharmmāvyabhicāra eva ca gamakatvamiti rūpāntarakalpanā vyarthā| pratibandhanibandhanānvayavyatirekāpagame ca rūpāntarakalpanāyāmapi svasādhyadharmmāvyabhicārābhāvāt| tadanena ‘tridhaiva sa’ ityasya trilakṣaṇa eva “sa heturaḥvinābhāvasya” svasādhyadharmmāvyabhicārasya “niyamād” avaśyantayā sabhdāvāt pratibandhanimittatadaṃśavyāptyanabhyupage (game)ca rūpāntarakalpanāyāmapi “hetvābhāsāstato'pare” yathoktatrilakṣaṇādapare rūpāntarayogitayā vikalpyamānā hetvābhāsā avinābhāvasya svasādhyadharmmāvyabhicārasya teṣvabhāvādityaparo'rtho darśita iti|

[ 5. hetulakṣaṇe'dhikarūpavādināṃ nirāsaḥ|]
yaduktaṃ ‘trilakṣaṇa eva heturnānyalakṣaṇaḥ’ iti tatra pareṣāṃ vipratipattiṃ darśayannāha- “ṣaḍlakṣaṇo heturityapare” naiyāyika-mimāṃsakādayo manyante| kāni punaḥ ṣaḍrūpāṇi hetostairiṣyaṃte ? ityāha- ‘trīṇi caitāni” pakṣadharmmānvayavyatirekākhyāni| tathā'bādhitaviṣayatvaṃ caturthaṃ rūpam| abādhitaḥ pramāṇenānirākṛto viṣayaḥ sādhyadharmmalakṣaṇo yasya sa tathoktaḥ tasya bhāvaḥ tattvamaparaṃ rūpam| tathā vivakṣitaikasaṃkhyatvaṃ rūpāntaraṃ, ekā saṃkhyā yasya hetudravyasya tadekasaṃkhyaṃ vivakṣitamekasaṃkhyaṃ hetudravyamāśrayatvena yasya hetusāmānyasya tadvivakṣitaikasaṃkhyaṃ tabhdāvo'paraṃ rūpam| yadyekasaṃkhyāvyāvacchinnāyāṃ pratiheturahitāyāṃ hetuvyaktau hetutvaṃ bhavati tadā gamakatvaṃ na tu pratihetusahitāyāmapi dvisaṃkhyāyuktāyāmiti| yadi viruddhāvyabhicāryaparaṃ hetvantaraṃ nopadarśyata iti yāvat| tathā jñātatvaṃ ca jñānaviṣayatvaṃ ca| nahyajñāto hetuḥ svasattāmātreṇa gamako yuktaḥ iti| tatraiteṣu rūpāntareṣu yadetabādhitaviṣayatvaṃ nāma tat tāvat pratibandhanibandhanānvayavyatirekātmakā'vinābhāvasambhave sati tataḥ pṛthaganyallakṣaṇaṃ na bhavati| tadātmakaṃ tu tadvacanenaivoktamiti na vaktavyamiti| kasmāt pṛthag lakṣaṇaṃ na bhavati ? bādhāyā avinābhāvasya ca virodhāditi| tathā hi-satyapyavinābhāve yathokte bādhāsambhavaṃ manyamānairabādhitaviṣayatvaṃ rūpāntaramucyate| sā ceyaṃ tatsambhāvanā na sambhavati, bādhāyā avinābhāvena “virodhāt” sahānavasthānalakṣaṇāt| tameva virodhaṃ sādhayannāha- “avinābhāvo hi” ityādi| satyeva hi sādhyadharmme bhāvo hetoravinābhāva ucyate| pramāṇabādhā tu tasminnasati| yadi hi satyeva tasmiṃstadabhāvaviṣayaṃ pramāṇaṃ pravartteta tadā'sya bhrāntatvādapramāṇataiva syāt iti kuto bādhā ?| tataḥ “sa” hetuḥ “tallakṣaṇaḥ” sādhyāvinābhāvī “dharmmiṇi syāt| atra ca sādhyadharmmaḥ kathaṃ na bhavet” ? yato bādhāvakāśaḥ syāt| tasmādavinābhāvasya pramāṇabādhāyāśca sahānavasthānamavinābhāvenopasthāpitasya dharmmiṇi sādhyadharmmabhāvasya pramāṇabādhopasthāpitasya ca tadabhāvasya parasparaparihārasthitilakṣaṇatayā virodhenaikatra dharmmiṇyasambhavāditi|

tameva virodhaṃ spaṣṭīkartuṃ paropahāsavyājenāha- “pratyakṣānumāne hi” ityādi| sādhyadharmmaṃ hi bādhamāne pratyakṣānumāne, “taṃ grīvāyāṃ gṛhītvā” dharmmiṇaḥ svāśrayāt “niṣkāsayataḥ”| tasmiṃśca sādhyadharmme satyeva tadavinābhāvitvāddheturbhavaṃ “staṃ” sādhyadharmmaṃ niṣkāsyamānaṃ gale gṛhītvā haṭhāt “tatraiva” dharmmiṇyavasthāpayatīti “paraṃ” prakṛṣṭaṃ bata “bhāvānāṃ” sādhyadharmmalakṣaṇānāmasvāsthyaṃ vartate| tathā hi- yantradvayaniyantritānāṃ nirucchāvasitayā maraṇameva prāptamiti|

paro bādhā'vinābhāvayorvviṣayabhedādavirodhaṃ darśayannāha- “anyatra” sādhyadharmmiṇaṃ parihṛtya dṛṣṭāntadharmmiṇi sādhyadharmmeṇāvinābhāvī heturna punaḥ sādhyadharmmiṇyeva| tataḥ kuto bādhā'vinābhāvayorvvirodho'nyatra bādhayā sādhyadharmmābhāvasādhanādanyatra ca hetunā tabhdāvasādhanāt| tathā caivaṃvidhe satyapi avinābhāve bādhāsambhavād abādhitaviṣayatvasya rūpāntarasya sambhava iti|

evaṃvidhāvinābhāvopagame satyapyabādhitaviṣayatvādike rūpāntare “hetvābhāsāstato'pare” rūpāntarasambhavina ityāpāditāṃ hetvābhāsatāṃ vivarītuṃ paropahāsapūrvvakamāha- tat kim “ayaṃ” sādhyadharmmī “tapasvī” varākaḥ “śaḍḍha(ṇḍha)mudvāhya tasmiṃn” sādhyadharmmasādhanaśaktivikalaṃ hetuṃ pariṇāyya sādhyadharmmalakṣaṇaṃ “putraṃ mṛgayate ?”| etadeva vyanakti- “yasya” hetorddharmmiṇyasatyapi “sādhyadharmme bhāva” iṣyate, sādhyadharmmiṇo'nyatrāvinābhāvopagamāt| “taṃ” tathāvidhaṃ sādhyadharmmiṇyupadarśya kathaṃ dharmmī sādhyadharmmavānityucyate ?| na hya'mbhastvasya samudre lavaṇatvenāvinābhāve'pi tavdyatirikte'mbhasi lavaṇatayā sādhyatveneṣṭe'mbhastvabhāve'pi lavaṇatvasiddhiriti|

parasya vacanāvakāśamāśaṅkayāha- “ata eva” ityādi| etadeva vivṛṇoti- “syādetad” bhavato matam| yata eva heturanyathā'pi sādhyadharmmamantareṇāpi dharmmiṇi bhavedambhastvādiṣu tathādarśanāt, sādhyadharmmiparihāreṇa cāvinābhāvopagamāt ata eva kāraṇāt pramāṇābhyāmabādhitadharmmā dharmmītyucyate| yadi pratyakṣānumānābhyāṃ sādhyadharmmiṇi hetorvviṣayaḥ sādhyadharmmo na bādhyate yathā'mbhastvasya lavaṇatvam, tadā tasya gamakatvam, nānyatheti| tato'nyatrāvinābhāvamātreṇa sādhyasiddheranabhyupagamāt na yathokto doṣa iti|

siddhāntavādyāha- “tat kim” idānīṃ yadā hetordharmmiṇyavinābhāvitānabhyupagamāt sādhyasiddherabhāvāt tatsiddhaye rūpāntaramabādhitaviṣayatvamucyate tadā hetorna kiñcit sāmarthyam| kasmād ? “abādhayaiva” hetumantareṇāpi “sādhyasiddheḥ” akiñcitkara eva hetuḥ| tathā hyatra kalpanādvayam-bādhakapramāṇavṛttau sādhyābhāvo niyato vā syād ? aniyato vā ?| tatra yadi pūrvvo vikalpastadā sādhyābhāvo hi bādhakapramāṇasya vṛttau niyataḥ, tadaiva bhāvāt tadabhāve cābhāvāditi| tasmād “abādhāyāṃ” bādhakapramāṇavṛttyabhāve tanniyatasya sādhyābhāvasyāpyabhāvāt “sādhyasiddhiḥ” bhavatyeveti vyartha eva heturiti nopanyasanīya eva| tataḥ kasyābādhitaviṣayatvaṃ rūpāntaraṃ bhavet ?| syānmatam- mā bhud bādhakapramāṇavṛttyabhāve hetoḥ sāmarthyam, yadā tu sādhyasya bādhakaṃ pramāṇaṃ dharmmiṇi varttate tadā hetoḥ sādhyasādhane sāmarthyaṃ bhaviṣyatītyata āha- “bādhāyāmapi” iti| yadi bādhakaṃ pramāṇaṃ varttate tadā tena sādhyābhāvasya dharmmiṇi sādhanāt punarbrahmaṇāpi tabhdāvasya karttumaśakyatvāt kimaṅga punaḥ śaṭhena hetuneti kutaḥ sādhanasya hetoḥ sāmarthyam ?| ata eva hi bhavabhdirabādhitaviṣayatvaṃ rūpāntaramucyata iti|

atha bādhakapramāṇavṛttau sādhyābhāvo na niyataḥ tadabhāve'pi bhāvāditi dvitīyaḥ pakṣa iṣyate tadāpyabādhāyāḥ sāmarthyaviraha iti darśayannāha- “aniyame” bādhakapramāṇavṛttau sādhyābhāvasyeṣyamāṇe satīdamāpatitam| na ca-bādhakaṃ pramāṇaṃ syāt “sādhyābhāvasya ca sambhavaḥ”- iti “na” sādhyasādhane “sāmarthyam abādhāyāḥ” satyāmapi tasyāṃ sādhyābhāvasya sambhavāditi tadyogino'pi hetvābhāsataiveti|

yaduktam “abādhayaiva sādhyasiddhervyartho hetuḥ” iti tatrānyathā'rthamabādhāyā darśayan hetusāmarthyaṃ pratipādayannāha paraḥ-na bādhāyā abhāvo mamābādhā'bhimatā| kiṃ tarhi ?| bādhāyā anupalabdhiḥ| sā ca tadanupalabdhiḥ puruṣasya śaktivaikalyāt kvacid deśādau bādhāyāḥ sambhave'pi syāt| tato bādhā'nupalabdhimātreṇa sādhyasiddherabhāvāt tatsiddhaye'vaśyaṃ heturabhidhānīya iti sa hetuprayogasya viṣayastadā hi hetuḥ svasādhyaṃ sādhayan kathamasamarthaḥ syāt ? iti|

siddhāntavādyāha-kiṃ nu vai heturbbādhāyā yā upalabdhistasyāḥ vibheti na punarbbādhāyā yena bādhāṃ sambhavantīmapyanādṛtya tadanupalabdhau satyāṃ prayoktavya iṣṭo bhavataḥ|

kadācit paro brūyāt-kiṃ kariṣyati vidyamānā'pi bādhā tapasvinī, tadupalabdhireva rākṣasī| tasmāt tata eva hetorbhayaṃ tadabhāve hetuḥ prayoktavya evetyata āha- “sa tarhi” ityādi| evaṃ tarhi paramārthena bādhā kimasti nāstītyetadanapekṣya bādhāyā anupalabdhau satyāṃ prayoktavya iti kākvā pṛcchati| kadācit paro brūyāt-uktamevaitat kimarthaṃ pṛcchyate ? ityāha- “kimarthaṃ prayujyata” iti| bādhā'nupalambhe'pi tatsambhave sādhyasādhanāyogādityabhiprāyaḥ| paro'navagatābhiprāya āha-“sādhyasiddhyartham” iti bādhakapratyayābhāve pramāṇyasyeṣṭatvāt tataḥ sādhyasiddhiraviruddhaiveti manyate| siddhāntavādī satyāṃ bādhāyāṃ tadanupalambhe'pi sādhyasiddhimasambhāvayan pṛcchati “sa kiṃ kvacid” ityādi| kiṃ punarasau hetuḥ satyāmapi bādhāyāṃ sādhyaṃ sādhayediti sambhāvyate bhavatā yenāsyā bādhāyā abhāvaniścayaṃ prati yatno na kriyate hetuśca prayujyata iti| evametat iti cet; tathā satyāmapi bādhāyāṃ sādhyasādhanasāmarthopagame satyabādhitaviṣayatvaṃ hetulakṣaṇaṃ na bhavati| kiṃ kāraṇam ?| bādhāyāmapi satyāmasya hetoḥ “sāmarthyāt” sāmarthyopagamāt| taddhi hetorlakṣaṇamucyate yena vinā sādhyaṃ na sādhayediti|

syānmatam-anupalabhyamānabādhatvaṃ hetulakṣaṇaṃ paramārthena, nābādhitaviṣayatvamityata āha- “tathā ca” ityādi| evaṃ hi sati bādhāyāḥ sabhdāvasambhave'pi tāmabhyupagamya tadanupalambhamātreṇa hetoḥ prayogaḥ prāptaḥ| yadi hi bādhāmabhyupagamya hetuprayogo nābhimataḥ syāt tadā'nupalambhamātreṇa bādhāyaṃ saṃśayāt-satāmapi keṣāñcit kathañcidanupalambhasambhavāt-saṃśayitasya hetuprayoge pravṛttireva na yujyeta| tasmād yo yatsaṃśaye'pi pravartate sa tasya bhāvapakṣamabhyupetyaiva pravarttate| tathā ca yathā bādhānupalabdhau tāmabhyupagamya hetuḥ prayujyate tathā tadupalabdhāvapi prayujyatām, bādhāyāḥ sabhdāvābhyupagame sati tadupalambhānupalambhayorvviśeṣābhāvāditi nānupalabhyamānabādhatvamapi hetulakṣaṇaṃ yujyata iti kuto bādhakapratyayavirahe'pyasati pratibandhe prāmāṇyasya sambhava iti|

parasya vacanāvakāśamāśaṅkayāha- “na bādhāyām” ityādi| naiva hi bādhāyāṃ saṃtyāṃ hetoḥ sāmarthyamiṣyate tat kathaṃ tadupalambhe'pi prayogaḥ syāt ?| siddhāntavādyāha- “yadyevaṃ” bādhāyāṃ satyāṃ heturasamartho yadīṣyate tadā'nirṇṇīto bādhāyā asaṃbhavo yasya hetoḥ sa tathāvidhaḥ prayogaṃ bādhā'nupalambhamātreṇa nārhati| kiṃ kāraṇam ?| mā bhūd bādhāyāḥ sambhavapakṣe “prayuktasyāpi” hetoḥ sādhyasiddhau “asāmarthyamiti”| pūrvvapakṣavādyāha-bādhānupalambhe sati bādhāyā abhāvāt sadupalambhakapratyayābhāve satyavaśyamarthānāmasattvāddhetoḥ sāmarthyam iti cenmanyase siddhāntavādyāha- “kimupalambho bādhām” ityādi| upalambho hyarthānāṃ kāryam, na ca kāryaṃ kāraṇaṃ vyāpnoti| na hya'vaśyaṃ kāraṇāni kāryavanti bhavanti, pratibandhavaikalyasambhavāt| tat kathamavyāpakasyopalambhasya nivṛttau bādhāyā nivṛttiḥ ?, yato hetorbbādhāyāḥ sambhavakṛtamasāmarthyaṃ na sambhavediti| etacca parairapīṣyata eva; pramāṇatayopagatasyāpyudayakāle'nupalabdhabādhasya kālāntareṇa bādhakapratyayotpāde satyaprāmāṇyopagamāt| athāvyāpakasyāpyupalambhasya nivṛttau bādhā nivarttate-

“nivarttate hi mithyātvaṃ doṣājñānādayatnataḥ||”
iti anenaiva nyāyena jñānanivṛttyā bādhānivṛtterityāha-ta-thāpi vyartho hetuḥ| kutaḥ ?| “bādhānupalambhādeva” hetuprayogarahitāt sādhyasiddheḥ| kiṃ kāraṇam ?| anupalambhe bādhāyā asambhavāt| tathā hi-yatra bādhāyā anupalambhastatra paramārthata eva sā na vidyata iti manyase| yatra cāsau paramārthato nāsti tatra sādhaydharmmasyābhāvo'pi paramārthenaiva nāstyanyathā paramārthena bādhāyā abhāvāyogāt| tataśca sādhyadharmmasyābhāvābhāve sati bhāva iti bhavanmatyā sādhyapratītervyarthatā hetoriti|

atha mā bhūd yuktivirodha iti nopalambhanivṛttau bādhānivṛttiriṣyate, tatrāha- upalambhasya nivṛttāvapi satyāṃ bādhāyā anivṛttāviṣyamāṇāyāṃ tadavasthaṃ hetorasasāmarthyam yadavasthaṃ bādhopalambha iti hetoraprayoga iti kasyābādhitaviṣayatvaṃ rūpāntaraṃ syāt ?|

etadevopasaṃharannāha- “tasmāt svasādhya” ityādi| yata evaṃ vyāptyā hetoḥ sarvvatra sādhyenāvinābhāvābhyupagame bahirvyāptāviṣyamāṇāyāṃ vaiyarthyaṃ hetuprayogasyāpadyate tasmāt “svasādhyabhāvābhāvābhyāṃ anyathā'pi” svasādhyabhāve'pyabhavanna'bhāve'pi ca bhavan heturdharmmiṇi kiñcit sādhyaṃ “na bhāvayati” na sādhayati “na vibhāvayati” tadviparītaṃ na niṣedhayati “iti” tasya vidhipratiṣedhāvakurvvata “upakṣepaḥ” prayogo “na samarthaḥ” ityavaśyaṃ hetuprayogamicchatā svasādhyāvinābhāvaḥ sarvvatra hetorabhyupagantavyaḥ| sa ca pratibandhanibandhanaḥ| eṣa ca darśanādarśanamātrayatto yathoktaṃ prāk| tasmiṃścābhyupagate bādhāvinābhāvayorvvirodhaḥ siddha ityupasaṃharannāha- “tanna” ityādi| yata evaṃ tena kāraṇenābādhā rūpāntaraṃ na bhavati|

yadi nāma bādhāvinābhāvayoḥ sahāvasthānābhāvādavinābhāve satyabādhā gamyate rūpāntaraṃ tu kimiti na bhavati ? iti, ata āha- “tannāma” ityādi| taddhi tasmād viśeṣaṇāntaraṃ bhaved vastusthityā| lakṣaṇakāraiśca rūpāntaratvenopādānamarhati yasya viśeṣaṇasya bhāve'pi yasyāparasyābhāvaḥ syāt| yataḥ sambhave vyabhicāre ca viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvo na sambhava eva kevale| udāharaṇamāha-“tad yathā” ityādi| satyapi hi dharmmisambandhe śrāvaṇatvādeḥ sapakṣe bhāvo nāsti| satyapi ca cākṣuṣatvādeḥ sapakṣe bhāve sādhyadharmmiṇi śabde sambandho nāsti| tato'nayoḥ sambhavavyabhicārayorbhāvād viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvo lakṣaṇāntaratvena copādānam| ihā'pyevaṃ bhaviṣyatīti ced āha- “na caitad” anantaroditamabādhāyā avinābhāve sati sambhavati| satyavinābhāve niyamenābādhāyāḥ sambhavāvdyabhicārābhāvāt kuto viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvo kṣaṇāntaratvena copādānamarhati ? iti na hetoḥ sādhyāvinābhāvino viruddhasya ca sādhyaviparyayāvinābhāvino viṣaye bādhā sambhavati| uktena prakāreṇa viparyaye samyaggheturevāviṣaye tu prayogāddhetvābhāsa ucyate| yata evam “iti” tasmānna tadabhāvo bādhāvirahaḥ pṛthagavinābhāvādanvayavyatirekātmano'nayorhetuviruddhayorlakṣaṇāntaratvena vācyaḥ, vyabhicārābhāvena rūpāntaratvāyogāt| yataścāvinābhāve sati bādhā na sambhavati virodhāt, tasmāddhetoryathoktalakṣaṇasya prayoge sati gamyārthāyā api pratijñāyā doṣāṇāṃ pratyakṣaviruddhādīnāṃ sambhavo nāsti, hetulakṣaṇenaiva teṣāṃ nirastatvāt| tat kathaṃ bādhāviraho heto rūpāntaramucyate ?| asambhavināṃ ca teṣāṃ upavarṇṇanaṃ niṣphalamityākūtam|

kevalāyāḥ prayoge'sti sambhava iti cet, āha-“nāpi” ityādi| hetuprayoge hyasati kevalā pratijñaiva na prayujyate, hetuviṣayatvena tadabhyupagamāt| tataśca śāstrakārairna pratijñādoṣāḥ pratyakṣaviruddhādayo vācyā iti| diṅnāgapādaistu sādhyāsādhyaviparyayeṇa vipratipattidarśanādaprayogārhasyāpi pakṣasya lakṣaṇavidhāne nyāyaprāptamevāpakṣatva na ni(tvaṃ ni)rākṛtapadena pramāṇaviruddhasyākhyānam, na tvatiprasaktaṃ pakṣalakṣaṇam vyavacchinnam, sandigdhasyaiva sādhyatvāt, pramāṇabādhite sādhakapramāṇāvṛtteiriti|

tadevamabādhitaviṣayatvaṃ nirākṛtya rūpāntaraṃ nirākurvvannāha- “etena” avinābhāve sati bādhāyā asambhavadarśanena “ekasaṃkhyāvivakṣā'pi” viruddhāvyabhicāridoṣavipakṣeṇocyamānā “pratyuktā” pratyākhyātā|

paraḥ pṛcchati- “katham” iti kena prakāreṇa-yathā bādhāvinābhāvayoḥ sahānavasthānaṃ tathā pratihetvavinābhāvayorapi ?, yenaikasaṃkhyāvivakṣā tadvadeva pratyākhyāyeta iti|

siddhāntavādī sāmyaṃ darśayannāha-“eka” ityādi| eko hi heturlakṣaṇayuktaḥ| svasādhyāvyabhicārī kathaṃ bhavati ?| yadi svasādhyabhāva eva bhavet, anyathā tallakṣaṇamavinābhāvo nāma hīyeta| yatraiva dharmmiṇi sa tallakṣaṇa eko bhavati tatraiva dharmmiṇi tasmādanyo'pi pratiheturviruddhastena hetulakṣaṇayuktaḥ kathaṃ bhavati ?| ekasya hetoryat sādhyaṃ tabdādhakasya tadviruddhasyāparasya dharmmasya bhāva eva nābhāve bhāvādavinābhāvāditi bādhayā samānaṃ bādhāsambhavena samānaḥ pratiheturiti tannirāsenaiva nirasta iti|

atraiva dūṣaṇāntaramabhidhātuṃ vikalpayannāha- “api ca” ityādi| “vastutaḥ” paramārthato yasya pratiheturna sambhavati kimasau samyagjñānasya viparyasya vopanyastasādhyaviparītajñānasya vā heturiṣṭo yato vivakṣitaikasaṃkhyatvaṃ tallakṣaṇamucyate, āhosvid yasya pratihetustatsādhyaviparītasādhako na pradarśitaḥ paramārthataḥ sannapīti| paro doṣamapaśyannāha- “kiñcātaḥ” ityādi| yadi nāma purvvo vikalpa uttaro vā tataḥ ko doṣaḥ ? iti|

siddhāntavādyāha-yadyasambhavan pratiheturyasya sa samyagjñānādiheturiṣyate, tadā'lakṣaṇametad vivakṣitaikasaṃkhyatvam| kasmāt ?| aśakyo niścayo yasya vastuto'sambhavatpratihetutvasya sa tathoktaḥ| paramatāpekṣayā caitaducyate| paro hi darśanādarśanābhyāmasatyapi pratibandhe'vinābhāvamicchati| tatastasya pratihetorevaṃvidhasya sambhavo'sti| sa cānupalabhyamāno'pi kadācit syāditi vastutastadabhāvo niścīyate| pratibandhanibandhanāvinābhāvavādināṃ tvasmākaṃ pratihetvasambhavaḥ suniścita eva| nahi tādātmyatadutpattilakṣaṇe pratibandhe pramāṇataḥ siddhe tannimittāvinābhāvitayā ekena hetunā svasādhye sādhite punastatraiva dharmmiṇi tallakṣaṇasya tadviruddhārthasādhakasya pratihetoḥ sambhavaḥ śaṅkayate, bhāvānāṃ viruddhasvabhāvadvayāyogād, viruddhadharmmādhyāsasya bhedalakṣaṇatvāt| viruddhadharmmasādhakasambhave ca tasyaiva svasādhyāvinābhāvinaḥ prathamasya tatra pramāṇato bhāvasiddhayayogāditi|

syānmatam-yadi nāma prastutaḥ pratihetvasambhavo'smābhirniścetumaśakyastathāpyasambhavatpratihetutvaṃ vivakṣitaikasaṃkhyatvapratipāditaṃ hetulakṣaṇaṃ kasmānna bhavati ? ityāha- “na hyaniścitātmanaḥ” ityādi| pratipādako yo dharmmo hetostasyāniścitasvabhāvasya yasmāt tallakṣaṇatvaṃ pratipādakadharmmatā na bhavati| yathā saṃdigdhasya pakṣadharmmatvasyeti pūrvvakasya sādhanam| nāpi sandhigdhaṃ lakṣaṇaṃ yasya sa heturbhavatīti na kaściddheturbhavediti hetvabhāvo vā ityasya samarthanam| tataśca “hetvābhāsāstato'pare” ityatrāpi yojitamiti|

syānmatam-yasya pratiyogī dṛśyate tasyaiva pratihetubhāvāt ahetutvaṃ bhavatu, yasya tu pratiyogī heturna dṛśyate sa vastuta evāsambhavatpratihetuḥ| na hi tatra vastutaḥ pratihetusambhavaḥ śaṅkayate, bādhakapratyayamantareṇa bādhāśaṅkāyā ayogāt| taduktam-

“bādhājñāne tvanutpanne nāśaṅkā niṣpramāṇikā” iti|
atra āha-“tulye lakṣaṇe hi” ityādi| śaṅkayamānapratihetunā tulyaṃ lakṣaṇaṃ darśanādarśanamātranimittāvinābhāvarūpaṃ yasya tasmin dṛṣṭaḥ pratiyoginaḥ pratihetorbbādhakasya sambhavaḥ sa yeṣāmapi tattulyalakṣaṇānāṃ pratiyogī na dṛśyate teṣvapi śaṅkāṃ pratihetusambhavaviṣayāmutpādayati| kiṃ kāraṇam ?| adṛṣṭapratiyogino dṛṣṭapratiyogino viśeṣābhāvāt| nahi tasyetareṇa kaścidviśeṣo'sti, yatastatsambhavo na śaṅkayeta| pruṣaśaktivaikalyādinā tu tadadarśanaṃ sambhāvyeteti kimucyate ‘nāśaṅkā niḥpra(ṣpra)māṇikā’ iti| atha viśeṣaḥ pratibandhalakṣaṇo'vinābhāvaniścāyako dṛṣṭapratihetoradṛṣṭapratiyogina iṣyate yataḥ pratiyogisambhavāśaṅkā'stamupaiti| tadā sati vā viśeṣe sa viśeṣo hetorlakṣaṇam| kiṃ kāraṇam ?| yatastato viśeṣāddheturekāntena niścayena nirastapratipakṣastathāvidhe dharmmiṇi pratihetvasambhavāt svasādhyaṃ niścāyayatīti| yastathāvidho na bhavati tadviśeṣavirahāt dṛṣṭapratihetuḥ so'tallakṣaṇo na hetuḥ syāt| tathā ca yadi nāmā'hetau pratiheturdṛṣṭo, hetoḥ kimāyātam, yena tannivṛttaye tatraikasaṃkhyāvivakṣā kriyate, yathoktāvinābhāvavacanenaiva tannivṛtterityāha- “tathā ca hetau” tadviśeṣayogini “pratihetvasambhave” sati “vyarthā” niṣprayojanā “ekasaṃkhyāvivakṣeti”| yathoktaviśeṣāṅgīkarane tallakṣaṇasya pratihetorasambhavāt kasyaikasaṃkhyāvivakṣayā vyavacchedaḥ kriyate ? yato'sya sārthakatvaṃ syāditi|

viruddhāvyabhicāriṇaśca hetvābhāsasya vyavacchedārthamekasaṃkhyāvivakṣā hetulakṣaṇe kriyate| vastuto'sambhavatpratihetutvasiddhaye ca pratibandhalakṣaṇe viśeṣe hetāviṣyamāṇe viruddhāvyabhicāryapi hetvābhāso na bhavati| tato vyavacchedyābhāvāt kimekasaṃkhyāvivakṣayā ? iti darśayannāha-“ataḥ” pratibandhalakṣaṇaviśeṣopagamāt “viruddhāvyabhicāriṇo hetvābhāsasya yallakṣaṇaṃ taddhīyeta” na sambhavet| kiṃ punastadviruddhāvyabhicāriṇo lakṣaṇam ? ityāha- “svalakṣaṇa” ityādi| hetoryadātmīyaṃ lakṣaṇaṃ tadyuktayorhetvorekatra dharmmiṇi virodhena parasparaviruddhasādhyasādhakatvenopanipāte sati viruddhāvyabhicārīti viruddhāvyabhicāriṇo lakṣaṇam| na ca tat pratibandhāṅgīkaraṇe sati sambhavati| nahi tādātmyatadutpattibhyāṃ svasādhyapratībandhavatyekatra hetau kvaciddharmmiṇi saṃbhavati dvitīyastallakṣastatraiva hetuḥ sambhavet, bhāvānāṃ viruddhasvabhāvadvayāsambhavāt, viruddhadharmmādhyāsasya bhedalakṣaṇatvāt| tadavyabhicāriṇo hetordvitīyasya tatra kutaḥ sambhavāvakāśa iti|

nanu yadi tathavidhāviśeṣasambhave sati viruddhāvyabhicārilakṣaṇaṃ hīyate, ekasaṃkhyāvivakṣā vā vyarthā, tathāpi naiva hetvabhāvaparasaṅgaḥ, tat kimuktaṃ hetvabhāvo vetyata āha- “na ca” naiva “tasya” viśeṣasya pratibandhalakṣaṇasya, yato vastuto'sambhavatpratihetutvaṃ niścīyate| “svarūpaṃ” tādātmyatadutpattilakṣaṇaṃ nirddiśyate bhavadbhiḥ yathā'smābhirnirdiṣṭaṃ yadrūpaṃ “pratītya” pratipadya pratiyoginaḥ ambhavāsambhavāvutpaśyāmaḥ| yatra sa viśeṣo nāsti tatra pratiyoginaḥ sambhavaḥ kalpita āgamāśraye'numāne| yatra tvasti sa viśeṣo vastubalapravṛtte'numāne tatra pratiyogino'sambhava iti| yata evaṃ tasmānnāstyeva bhavatāṃ sa viśeṣaḥ-bhavabhdirna jñāyata eva sa viśeṣa iti| tasmāt sarvvatra yatrāpi pratiyogī na dṛśyate tatrāpi śaṅkayā pratiyogiviṣayayā bhavitavyam| tāmeva śaṅkāṃ draḍhayannāha- “dṛṣṭapratihetorapi” ityādi| yasyāpi hi pratiheturdṛṣṭasyāpi prāk praityogidarśanāditareṇa sarvvakālamadṛṣṭapratiyoginā na kaścid viśeṣo lakṣyate yaddarśanājjñāyeta ‘atra pratiyogī sambhavati nyānyatra’ iti darśanādarśanamātranibandhanayoranvayavyatirekayoḥ sarvvatra samānatvāt| tathāpi paścāttatra pratiyogī dṛṣṭa iti sarvvatra tattulyalakṣaṇe pratiyogisabhdāvaśaṅkā na nivarttata iti|

syānmatam-yeṣu pratiyogī sambhavati teṣvaśyameva kadācidasāvupalabhyate| yeṣu tu puruṣāyuṣeṇāpi nopalabhyate teṣvasau nāstyeva| tataḥ sa tathāvidho heturbhaviṣyati, tat kathaṃ hetvabhāvo'smākam ? ityata āha- “na ca” ityādi| yeṣāmapi hi pratihetuḥ sambhavati teṣāmapi naiva sarvvadā tasya pratihetorūpalabdhiḥ pratipattṝṇām| na hyasarvvadarśināmupalabdhiḥ sarvvabhāvasattāṃ vyāpnoti, pratibandhavaikalyasabhdāvāt| nanu ca yatra sarvvadaiva pratipatra(ttrā) pratiyogī na dṛśyate tatra tadāśaṅkākathaṃ kriyate ?| tathā cāha-

“bādha(dhā)jñāne tvanutpanne nāśaṅkā niṣpramāṇikā” iti|
tathā'param-
“utprekṣeta hi yo mohādajātamapi bādhakam|
sa sarvvavyavahāreṣu saṃśayātmā kṣayaṃ vrajet||” iti|

ata āha-“atiśayavatī tu” ityādi| tathā hi kasyacideva pramātuḥ kuśāgrīyamateratiśayavatī prajñā pratihetūtprekṣiṇī dṛṣṭā'smābhiḥ yathā vedaprāmāṇyanirākartṛṣu [hetuṣu] saugataiḥ śiṣyaparamparayā kumārilotpādātprāgadṛṣṭapratiyogiṣūpanyasteṣu, tenaiva prajñātiśayaśālinā pratihetava utprekṣitāḥ tatastaddarśanāt yāvajjīvaṃ adṛṣṭapratihetuṣvapi tadāśaṅkā na nivarttate| tataḥ kathamāśaṅkā niṣpramāṇikocyate ?| “tulyalakṣaṇe hi” ityādikamapi pratiyogisambhavāśaṅkākāraṇamuktameva| na ca pratiyogisambhavamāśaṅkamānastannimittasaṃbhavāt ‘utprekṣeta hi’ ityādyākrośamātreṇa nivarttayituṃ śakyate| tenāsya pratiyogyāśaṅkāpanodakṣamaṃ kiñcit kāraṇamabhidhānīyam yathā'smābhirabhihitaṃ ‘svabhāvahetorviparyeye bādhakapramāṇavaśāttādātmyaniścaye satyanvayavyatirekayostatra nirṇṇayaḥ; kāryahetau ca yathoktapratyakṣānupalambhataḥ kāryakāraṇasiddhestaniścaya’ iti| yata evaṃ sarvvatra pratiyogyāśaṅkā na nivarttate bhavaddarśane tena kāraṇenāniścayaḥ pratiyoginaḥ sambhavāsambhavayoḥ ‘iha pratiyogī sambhavati iha tu na sambhavati’ ityevaṃrūpa iti| tasmādvastuto'sambhavatpratihetutvaṃ yallakṣaṇaṃ hetoḥ tasyāniścitatvādekasaṃkhyāvivakṣāvādināṃ na kaściddhetuḥ syāt| na hyaniścitalakṣaṇo heturbhavatītyupasaṃhāra iti|

tadevaṃ ‘kiṃ yo vastuto'sambhavatpratihetuḥ sa samyagjñānaviparyayaheturiṣṭaḥ’ iti amuṃ vikalpaṃ nirākṛtya dvitīyaṃ vikalpaṃ nirācikīrṣurāha- “athāpradarśitapratihetuḥ” samyagjñānaviparyaheturiṣṭa iti sambandhaḥ| ayaṃ ca pakṣaḥ kila diṅnāgācāryasyāpyabhimata iti para upadarśayannāha-“yathāha diṅnāgācāryaḥ”| kimāha ? ”yadā tarhi” ityādi| “śrāvaṇatvasya hi na kathañcivdyavacchedahetutvam” iti diṅnāgācāryeṇokte pareṇābhihitam- “yadā tarhi vaiyākaraṇaḥ śabdatvaṃ sāmānyaviśeṣaṃ nityamabhyupagacchati tadā'yaṃ śrāvaṇatvalakṣaṇaḥ pakṣadharmmaḥ hetureva syāt| nityaḥ śabdaḥ śrāvaṇatvāt śabdatvavat” ityevaṃ pareṇokte satyācāryeṇoktam- “yadyatra śabdākhye dharmmiṇyanityatvahetuṃ kṛtakatvaprayatnānatarīyakatvādilakṣaṇaṃ kaścid vaiśeṣikādirna darśayet tadā'yamapradarśitapratiheturhetureva bhavet” iti|

tadevāmācāryapādaiḥ sākṣitve datte bhujamutkṣipya śāstrakāraḥ pūtkurvvannāha- “idamidānīm” ityādi| yadā hyācāryasyāpyetadabhimatamiti kaiścivdyākhyāyate tadidaṃ sumahavdyasanamāyātam-gurubhirabhihitatvādaprakāśyam, nahi gurūṇāṃ doṣaḥ prakāśayituṃ yuktaḥ, “nyāyamanupālayabhdiḥ asaṃvaraṇīyam” apracchādanīyam| tat kiṃ gurūn dūṣayāma uta nyāyamapyupekṣāmahe ityubhayamapyaśakyamiti “kaṣṭataraṃ vyasanaṃ kathaṃ nirvoḍhuṃ śakyeta ?”| na kathaṃciditi| kaḥ punaratra doṣo yenedaṃ kaṣṭataramityāha-“sa tāvadayaṃ” śrāvaṇatvalakṣaṇo “heturvvastūni” śabdādīni svasādhyaṃ tattvaṃ nityatvaṃ “tatprakṛtīni” tadātmakāni “kṛtvā” tacchrāvaṇatvaṃ pramāṇaṃ yeṣāṃ puruṣāṇāṃ mīmāṃsakavaiyākaraṇādīnāṃ tān “abhyudayena” svarggeṇa “niḥśreyasena” cāpavarggeṇa “yojayitvā”| tathā hi- vastutattvaṃ bhāvayan yāvat kleśānn prajahāti tāvat svargamāsādayati, kleśāṃstu prajahannirvāṇaparāyaṇo bhavati| athāvā śabdanityatvapratītau vedaprāmāṇyāt tadvihitāgnihotrānuṣṭhānāt svarggo vedāntaniṣevaṇādaparvaggaḥ| punaruttarakālaṃ “pratibhāvatā” prajñājātīyena vaiśeṣikādinā puruṣeṇa “hetvantarasya” pratihetoḥ “nidarśanena” yadasya “nityatvasādhanasāmarthyaṃ” pratihetvanupadarśane satyāsīt ttatadupadarśanena “utkīlitam” apanītamiti| tāni vastūni nityatvasampadaḥ pracyāvya, tāṃśca tatpramāṇakān puruṣān svarggāpavarggasampadaḥ pracyāvya śrāvaṇatvalakṣaṇo hetuḥ śaktivaikalyāt paritrātumaśakto bhraṣṭarājya ieva rājā tapovanaṃ gacchati svaireva duścaritairiti kimatra vayaṃ brūmaḥ ?|

tadevamupahasyaitasmin pakṣe doṣamupadarśayannāha- “puruṣapratibhā” ityādi| yada hyapradarśitapratiheturheturheturiṣyate tadā puruṣapratibhākṛtaṃ sādhanatvamabhyupagataṃ bhavati| tataśca vastuto na kiñcit sādhanamasādhanaṃ vā prāptam| tathā hi-yadā pratiheturnopadarśyate tadā sādhanam, yadā tūpadarśyate tadā na sādhanamiti puruṣapratibhākṛtaṃ sādhanatvamāyātamiti|

api ca- apradarśitapratihetorhetorhetutve'ṅgikriyamāṇe vikalpadvayam- kiṃ paramārthato hetustaddharmmabhāvī, utā'taddharmmabhāvīti ?| tatrādyaṃ vikalpamadhikṛtyāha-“sa ca” heturyo'sau prathamaṃ upādīyate| sa “yadi svabhāvata” eva “tasmin” sādhyadharmme “satyeva bhavati” ityevaṃśīlo'smadupavarṇṇitapratibandhopagamāt yadīṣyate “tadā kathamanyathā kriyeta” hetvantareṇātaddharmmabhāvī kathaṃ kriyeta?| na kathañcit| kiṃ kāraṇam ?| vastūnāṃ hetulakṣaṇānāṃ yaḥsvabhāvaḥ-‘satyameva sādhyadharmme bhavanātmakaḥ’-“tadanyathābhāvasya” tadviparyayasya “abhāvād” ubhayośca svasādhyadharmāvinābhāvitve svabhāvata eva dharmmiṇyekatra tayorbhāve viruddhāvubhau svabhāvāvekasya syātām| na caikasya viruddhau svabhāvau sambhavataḥ, viruddhadharmmādhyāsena tasyaikatvahāniprasaṅgāt| atha dvitīyo vikalpastadā “ataddharmmabhāvī ca” asatyapi sādhyadharmme bhavanaśīlaḥ pratibandhānabhyupagamāt “kathamanyadā'pi” apradarśitapratihetvavasthāyāmapi “sādhanaṃ” kasyacit ?| naiva tadāpi sādhanam, na kevalaṃ pradarśitapratihetvavasthāyāmiti|

upasaṃharannāha-“tasmāt svabhāvataḥ” ityādi| yata evaṃ bhāvānāṃ svabhāvo'nyathā kartuṃ na śakyate, viruddhobhayasvabhāvaścaiko na sambhavati tasmāt paramārthataḥ svena svena sādhyenāvinābhāvinoryathoktalakṣaṇayoḥ kāryasvabhāvahetvoḥ tallakṣaṇasya kāryasvabhāvalakṣaṇasya pratihetorasambhavād “alakṣaṇamekasaṃkhyāvivakṣā” vivakṣitaikasaṃkhyatvaṃ lakṣaṇaṃ na bhavati| kiṃ kāraṇam ? ityāha- “vyavacchedyābhāvāditi”| pratiheturhi vivakṣitaikasaṃkhyatvasya vyavacchedyo varṇyate| sa ca pratihetuḥ svalakṣaṇayuktayoḥ kāryasvabhāvayornna bhavatyeveti kathaṃ taddhetulakṣaṇaṃ syāditi| tadevamanayordvayo rūpayoryaḥ sambhavo yathoktāvinābhāvā'sambhave satīti rūpāntaropagame'pi hetvābhāsataiveti “hetvābhāsāstato'pare iti” ityasyārtho vivṛta iti|

jñātatvanirākaraṇāyāha- “jñānaṃ punaḥ” ityādi| avādhitaviṣayatvaṃ vivakṣitaikasaṃkhyatvaṃ ca kārya-svabhāvahetvorevāvinābhāve sati bādhāpratihetvorasambhavāt vyavacchedyābhāvatvena satyapi liṅgadharmmatve tallakṣaṇaṃ na bhavatītyuktam| jñānaṃ tu jñātatvam, tasyaiva bhāvapratyayenābhidhānāt| tathā hi-jñānaśabdapravṛttinimittaṃ jñātatvamucyate, tacca jñānameva, tadutpāde sati jñāta iti vyavahārāt| na ca tat liṅgasyātmarūpamiti kathaṃ liṅgalakṣaṇaṃ bhaviṣyati ?| yadyapi vikalpapratibhāsī sāmānyākāro liṅgatayā'vasthāpyate tathāpi na jñānasya liṅgadharmmatā| na hyasau svatantra eva liṅgam| yadāha- “vikalpabhedāna svatantrāṇāmanvarthāśrayaṇāt tatkalpitaviṣayāda'rthapratipattāvanarthapratilambha eva syāt” iti| tasmād vāhyavastūpādānasyaivāsya liṅgatā'vasthāpyate| sādhyasādhanasaṃkalpe vastudarśanahāneḥ svalakṣaṇasya kvacidananvayācca taddharmmatāmeva tvanusmaranto vikalpā nānaikavyatirekān saṃdarśayanto vastuni paramparayā pratibandhādavisaṃvādakāḥ kāryādiliṅgavyapadeśanibandhanaṃ cetyuktaprāyam|

na ca tasya kāryāderātmarūpaṃ jñānam| vikalpāvabhāsī ca sāmānyākāro naiva vikalpasyātmabhūtaḥ, tasya nīrūpasya vasturūpavirodhāt| tadrūpasya ca vikalpapratibimbacakrasya sāmānyātmatāvirahāt| yasmādabādhyasyāpi bāhyatayā vyavasitasyānanuyāyino'pyanuyāyitayā sāmānyātmakatvaṃ tathātve cāsya vikalparūpatā kutaḥ ? yadā''ha-

“jñānādavyatiriktaṃ ca kathamarthāntaraṃ vrajet ?||
tasmānmithyāvabhāso'yamartheṣvekātmatāgrahaḥ|” iti|
na jñānasya liṅgadharmmatā| etadeva sādhayannāha- “kiṃrūpād” ityādi| kimātmakāt “hetoranumeyo'rtho jñātavyaḥ iti cintāyāṃ” prakṛtāyāṃ “pratipattuḥ” puṃso yadavisaṃvādakaṃ liṅgaṃ tasya svarūpamabhidhīyate śāstrakāraiḥ yasya rūpasya darśanādayaṃ pratipattā ‘yatra tadrūpasambhavaḥ tat sādhanam tadrūpavikalamasādhanam’ iti pravibhāgena vyavasthāpya yattatra sādhanatvena vyavasthāpitaṃ tasyeṣṭārthasannidhānasampratyayāt pravṛttimavalambate| tathā, etasmiṃśca nyāye vyavasthite yadasya liṅgasyātmarūpaṃ tallakṣaṇaṃ bhavitumarhati pakṣadharmmādivat na tu yat pararūpam|

syādetat-jñātasya liṅgasya sādhakatvād yuktaiva sādhyasiddhyupayogino jñānasya liṅgalakṣaṇatetyata āha- “pratipattijanmani” ityādi| yadyanumeyapratītijanmanyupayujyate jñānamiti tanmātreṇa liṅgasya lakṣaṇamiṣyate tadā'tiprasaṅgaḥ prāpnoti| tamevāha- “evaṃ pratipattijanmanyupayogamātrālliṅgalakṣaṇatve prameyasya” arthasya “puruṣasya” pramātuḥ “ādi” śabdāt saṃyogasamavāyādīnāmālokamanaskārādīnāṃ liṅgalakṣaṇatvaṃ bhavet| atra kāraṇamāha- “nahi teṣvapi” prameyādiṣu asatsu liṅgini jñānaṃ bhavatīti kṛtvā| atra paro'niṣṭamāpādayannāha- “niścitagrahaṇaṃ tarhi” ityādi| yadi pararūpatvājjñānaṃ liṅgalakṣaṇaṃ na bhavati tadā ca yadetadācāryeṇa-

“anumeye'tha tattulye sabhdāvo nāstitā'sati|
niścite” ti-
niścitagrahaṇaṃ kṛtaṃ bhavataścābhimataṃ tanna karttavyayam| tathā hi-niścayo hi liṅgasya pararūpameva| sa cet tallakṣaṇam, jñānaṃ kimiti neṣyate yato niścayo vijñānameva tadviśeṣatvādasyeti|

siddhāntavādyāha- “na na karttavyaṃ” kintu kartavyameva tasya niścitagrahaṇasya liṅgarūpapratipādanyārthatvāt| tāmevānyārthatāṃ darśayannāha- “sapakṣavipakṣayoḥ” ityādi| pare hi sapakṣe darśanamātreṇāsapakṣe cādarśanamātrato gamakaṃ hetumicchanti| teṣāṃ naiva darśanamātreṇa sādhyasiddhau samartho heturbhavatīti jñāpanārthaṃ niścitagrahaṇaṃ kṛtam| yataḥ satorvidyamānayorapi darśanādarśanayoragamakatvaṃ hetordṛśyate ‘sa śyāmaḥ, tatputratvāt’ ityādau| yata evaṃ tena kāraṇena sapakṣe bhāvena vipakṣe sarvvatrābhāvaviśiṣṭenā'sapakṣe ca sarvvatrābhāvena sapakṣe tādātmyatadutpattilakṣaṇabhāvaviśiṣṭena gamako heturityasyārthasya jñāpanārthaṃ lakṣaṇavākye niścitagrahaṇaṃ kṛtaṃ boddhavyam| etaduktaṃ bhavati- yāveva sapakṣavipakṣayoḥ bhāvābhāvau pratibandhasādhakapramāṇavṛttyā niścitau tābhyāmeva heturgamako bhavati, na tu yathākathañciddarśanamātreṇetyasyārthasya jñāpanāya niścitagrahaṇaṃ kṛtamiti|

prakṛtamupasaṃharannāha- “tena” ityādi| yena viśiṣṭayorbhāvābhāvayoreva khyāpanāya niścitagrahaṇaṃ kṛtam, na rūpāntarābhidhānāya, anātmarūpasya ca lakṣaṇatā na yujyate, tena pararūpaṃ liṅgasya lakṣaṇaṃ na bhavati| yataḥ tena jñānādinā pararūpeṇa liṅgasya na kaścid rūpaviśeṣo'bhidhīyata iti|

nanu ca pare'pi sapakṣavipakṣayorbhāvābhāvābhyāṃ gamakaṃ hetumicchanti, darśanādarśane tu tayoreva sādhake, tat kimarthaṃ niścitagrahaṇam ? iti, ata āha- “tau hi” ityādi| yadyapi pare bhāvābhāvābhyāmeva gamakaṃ hetumicchanti tathāpi sapakṣa eva bhāvo'sapakṣe cābhāva eveti bhāvābhāvau darśanādarśanamātrato vyavasthāpayanti| na ca tatastau tathāvidhau sidhyataḥ, pratibandhavikalānāmapyarthānāṃ kvacid bhāvābhāvayoḥ kathañciddarśanādarśanasambhavāt| tasmād yau ‘hetoḥ sapakṣe eva bhāvo'sapakṣe cābhāva eva’ ityevamātmakau bhāvābhāvau tau tabhdāvasya sādhakaṃ yat pramāṇaṃ tādātmyatadutpattisādhanaviṣayaṃ taddhṛttyā voddhavyau| kutaḥ ? upāyāntarasyābhāvāt| tadanabhyupagame hi hetoḥ sapakṣa eva bhāvaḥ sarvveṣāṃ hetumatāṃ bhāvānāṃ sādhyenānugamadarśane sati vipakṣe cābhāva eva sādhyavikalānāṃ sarvvārthānāṃ hetuviviktānāṃ upalambhe sati syāt| na caitadasarvvadarśinaḥ sambhavatīti| yata upāyāntaraṃ nāsti tena kāraṇena tayorvviśiṣṭayorbhāvābhāvayoḥ pratipādanāya niścitaśabdaḥ prayukto lakṣaṇe lakṣaṇakāreṇeti|

nanu ca bhāvābhāvavacanamātrādeva pramāṇato niścayo labhyate anyathā tayoreva sattā na prasidhyediti, ata āha- “yadyapi” ityādi|

“anumeye'tha tattulye sabhdāvo nāstitā'sati|”
ityanenaiva sapakṣāsapakṣayoḥ bhāvābhāvavacanamātreṇā niścitagrahaṇanirapekṣeṇa tayorbhāvābhāvayoryat sādhanaṃ pramāṇaṃ tasya vṛttiryadyapyākṣipyate| kathaṃ punarniścitagrahaṇamantareṇa bhāvābhāvavacanamātratastaddhṛtteḥ ākṣepaḥ ? ityāha- “anyathā” yadi tatsādhanapramāṇavṛttirnākṣipyeta, tadā “tayoreva” sapakṣavipakṣayoreva bhāvābhāvayoryā sattā svarūpavyavasthā tasyā “aprasiddheḥ”| kasmādaprasiddhiḥ ? ityāha-“jñānasya” upalabdheryā sattā utpattiḥ tannibandhanatvājjñeyasya bhāvābhāvalakṣaṇasya sattāvyavasthāyāḥ svarūpavyavasthiteḥ| na hyupalambhamantareṇa svata evārthāḥ sidhyanti, sarvvasya sarvvasiddhiprasaṅgāt| tasmādidamevaṃrūpaṃ naivaṃrūpamiti tadākārajñānodayādeva vyavasthāpyate| yata evaṃ tasmāt sarvvatra śāstre loke vā jñeyasattāvyavasthaiva niścitagrahaṇaṃ vinā'pi “tatsādhanaṃ” tatsattāsādhanaṃ pramāṇam “ākarṣati” ākṣipatīti| kiñca, parārthatvācca śāstrapraṇayanasya tatsādhanapramāṇavṛttirākṣipyate iti sambandhaḥ| kīdṛśaṃ punastacchāstrapraṇayanaṃ yat parārtharūpatayā svavyavasthāpitajñeyasattāsādhanaṃ pramāṇamākṣipati ? ityāha- “ trirūpaṃ liṅgaṃ vaḥ saṃvādakaṃ prāpakaṃ” vāñchitasyārthasyeti| yadi nāmaivaṃrūpaṃ parārthaṃ śāstrapraṇayanaṃ tathāpi kathaṃ tat sādhanapramāṇavṛttimākṣipatītyāha- “tadrūpaṃ” tasya liṅgasya trirūpasya rūpaṃ svabhāvaṃ śāstroktaṃ ye pratipattāro na vidanti, na teṣāṃ tatastrirūpālliṅgācchāstroktād vāñchite'rthe pravṛttirbhavati, ajñātasyārthasya jñāpakasya svasattāmātreṇa pravartakatvābhāvāt| yata evam “iti” tasmāt paropalakṣaṇatvādeva pareṣāṃ jñāpakatvādeva pravarttake trirūpaliṅge jñānaṃ siddhamiti yadyapi niścitagrahaṇamatiricyate tathāpi tāveva liṅgasya sapakṣāsapakṣayorbhāvābhāvau viśiṣṭau śāstroktau ‘sapakṣa eva bhāvo'sapakṣe cābhāva eva’ ityevaṃrūpau kecinnaiyāyikaprabhṛtayaḥ, pare darśanādarśanamātreṇa- ye darśanādarśane pratibandhasādhake na bhavataḥ- tanmātreṇa vyavasthāpayanti “yata eva iti” tasmātteṣāṃ vādināṃ niṣedhārtho'yaṃ lakṣaṇe niścitaśabdaḥ prayukta ācāryeṇāsmābhiścābhyupagata iti| yadi tu paravipratipattiḥ na syāt tadā naivāsau prayujyeteti|

kimiti punarddarśanādarśanābhyāṃ bhāvābhāvaviṣayābhyāṃ sapakṣā [sa]pakṣayoḥ viśiṣṭau bhāvābhāvāvanvayavyatirekātmakau neṣyete ityāha- “satorapi” ityādi| satyapi kvacit sapakṣe bhāvadarśane hetoḥ kvaciccāsapakṣe'bhāvadarśane ‘sa śyāmaḥ, tatputratvāt’ ityādāvanvayavyatirekayoḥ saṃśayāt| tathā hi- anvayo nāma sarvvatra satyeva sādhye hetorbhāvo vyāptyā cāsati sādhye hetorabhāvo vyatirekaḥ| na ca kvacit sati sādhye hetorbhāvadarśane'pi tanmātreṇa tathābhāvaḥ sarvvatra bhavati, apratibaddhasvabhāvānāṃ sahabhāvaniyamā'bhāvāt| tathā kvacit sādhyābhimatasyābhāve satyabhāvadarśane'pi hetoḥ sarvvatra tadabhāve'vaśyamabhāvaḥ, tadanāyattasya tannivṛttau niyamena nivṛttyabhāvāt| tasmāt pratibandhaprasādhakapramāṇavṛttyaiva yathoktau sapakṣāsapakṣayoḥ bhāvābhāvau sidhyataḥ nānyatheti vipratipattinirāsārthameva niścitagrahaṇaṃ kṛtamityupadarśayannāha- “tasmāt” ityādi| “asmābhiḥ” ityācāryakṛte niścitagrahaṇe'nyatrāsmākamabhimatatvāt “asmābhiḥ” ityāha|

tadevaṃ vipratipattinirāsārthaṃ niścitagrahaṇam, asatyāṃ tu vipratipattau tanna kartavyameveti pratipādya ata eva nyāyāt jñātatvaṃ rūpāntaraṃ na bhavatīti darśayannāha- “yato'pi”ityādi| “pṛthagataḥ” iti pakṣadharmmatvādestrairūpyāt| kutaḥ ? “tenaiva”trairūpyavacanenaiva tatsādhanapramāṇākṣepataḥ “avagatatvāt” pratipannatvāditi| kiṃvat ? “upanayārthavat pakṣadharmmatvāt” iti| yathā pakṣadharmmatvavacanenaiva hetorupanayasyārtho'vagatastasya dharmmiṇi hetoḥ sabhdāvapradarśanātmakatvāt, pakṣadharmmavacanasya ca tadrūpatvāt tataḥ pṛthagupanayo rūpāntaraṃ na bhavati; tathā trairūpyāt jñānaṃ, tadvacanenaivāvagatatvāditi|

atra paro'niṣṭamāpādayannāha- “anvayavyatirekayorapi” ityādi| yadi trairūpyavacanenaiva sāmarthyājjñānaṃ labhyata iti tat tataḥ pṛthag na vaktavyam “hantaḥ” tarhi anvayāt pṛthag vyatireko na vaktavyaḥ vyatirekācca pṛthaganvayaḥ| kiṃ kāraṇam ?| ekasyānvayasya vyatirekasya vā prayogādubhayasya gateḥ| kṛtaṃ ca tayoḥ pṛthagvacanaṃ, tathā jñātatvasyāpi trairūpyād gamyamānasyāpi pṛthagvacanaṃ karttavyamiti|

siddhāntavādyāha- “na, hetoḥ” ityādi| nānvayavyatirekayorna pṛthaktvaṃ kintu bhinnarūpataiva| tathā hi-anvayo hetoḥ sapakṣe bhāva ucyate, vyatirekaḥ punarabhāvo'sapakṣe| na ca tau parasparamākṣipataḥ parasparamantarbhavato vidhipratiṣedharūpayorbhinnasvabhāvatvāt| na ca yo yato bhinnasvabhāvaḥ sa tatrāntarbhūto yukto| nanu ca yadyanvayavyatirekayorbhinnarūpatā kathaṃ tarhi trirūpaṃ liṅgamucyate ?| nahi parasparabhinnāvātmānāvevāsya yujyete, svabhāvabhedalakṣaṇatvād vastubhedasya| naiṣa doṣaḥ, yato yathā'nvayavyatirekau vyavasthāpyete na vā nayo (pyete tathā tayo)ranantarbhāva ucyate nānyathā| kathaṃ cetau vyavasthāpyete ?| vyāvṛttikṛtaṃ bhedamupādāya| tathā cānayorbhinnarūpataiva| vyāvṛttibhede'pi ca paramārthato bhedo nāstītyekaṃ liṅgaṃ trirūpamityucyate iti|

kathaṃ tarhi prāguktam ‘nānayorarthataḥ kaścid bhedaḥ, anyatra prayogabhedād’ iti ? ata āha- “ekaṃ vākyam” ityādi| anvayamukhena vyatirekamukheṇa vā prayuktamekaṃ vākyamubhayamanvayaṃ vyatirekaṃ ca bhinnalakṣaṇameva gamayatītyucyate'smabhirnnaiko'rthaḥ svabhāvo dvitīyasyocyate, parasparabhinnayorevaikavākyārtharūpatvāt|

atra para āha-“na tu tatraiva” ityādi| ayamabhiprāyaḥ-lakṣaṇavākyapratipāditāvanvayavyatirekāvāśritya parasparāntarbhāvaścodyate| sa ca vidyata eva| tathā hi- ‘tatraiva bhāvaḥ’ ityatra lakṣaṇavākye tadarthatayā tadabhāve'bhāvo gamyate; ‘atadbhāve'vaśyamabhāvaḥ’ iti cātra ‘tadbhāve bhāvaḥ’| na hyasati pratibandha ekābhāve'parasyābhāvaḥ| pratibandhaśca tādātmyatadutpattibhyāṃ tadbhāve bhāvarūpa eva| tataścaikenaiva sapakṣāsapakṣayorbhāvābhāvapratipādakena prativiśiṣṭena lakṣaṇavākyenobhayagaterdvitīyavacanaṃ na karttavyamiti| tathā caikavākyārthāntarbhāvād bhinnasvabhāvatā'pyanayordurllabhā| tataśca yaduktam ‘anvayavyatirekayorapi tarhi na pṛthaktvamiti’ tat tadavasthameveti|

siddhāntavādyāha-“vacanametat” ‘tatraiva bhāvaḥ’ ityādirūpam “ubhayamākṣipati” pratipādayati| kutaḥ ?| sāmarthyādubhayapratipādanaśaktatvāt| katham ? iti cet, āha-“ekasyāpi vākyasya” kīdṛśasya ?| “niyamakhyāpakasya” ‘sapakṣa eva bhāvo'sapakṣe cābhāva eva’ iti sāvadhāraṇasya “dvitīyākṣepanāntarīyakatvāt” dvitīyapratipādananāntarīyakatvāt| “na ca tāvataikavākyapratipādanamātreṇobhayorekasvabhāvatā” bhinnasvabhāvānāmapyarthānāmekavākyena pratipādanāt| ekenaiva ca lakṣaṇavākyenobhayagatāvapi yat “pṛthagabhidhānaṃ” tat “prayoganiyamārtham”| sādharmyaprayoge vaidharmma(rmya)vacanaṃ na karttavyam, vaidharmyaprayoge ca sādharmmyavacanamiti na punarekābhidhānenānavagatasya rūpāntarasya pratipādanārtham| na ca tathā trairūpyavacanena jñānanibandhanena jñeyasattāvyavasthāyāḥ propalakṣaṇārthena ca śāstrapraṇayanenāśritajñānasyaiva trairūpyasya pratipādanāllabdhasya jñānasya punarvvacane na kiñcit prayojanamastīti nāsya pṛthagvacanaṃ yuktamiti|

syānmatam-kevalāvapi tarhyekavākyārthānantarbhūtau parasparama'bhinnasvabhāvau bhaviṣyataḥ tata evaivakavākyārthāntarbhāvādityata āha- “na punaḥ kevalau” ekavākyārthānapekṣau tadantarbhāvamātreṇa sapakṣāsapakṣayoḥ bhāvābhāvau parasparamākṣipato'ntarbhavataḥ bhinnarūpāṇāmapyarthānāmekavākyāntarbhāvadarśanāt| nanu ca niyamavantāvapi bhāvābhāvau kevalāveva, tayoḥ parasparākṣepe kevalayorapi tatprasaṅga ityata āha-“niyamavantau ca” sāvadhāraṇavākyapratipāditau “na kevalau” kintu sahitāveva| kutaḥ ?| “niyamasya” sāvadhāraṇasya vākyasya “ubhayarūpatvāt” bhāvābhāvapratipādanātmakatvāt|

tadevaṃ sāvadhāraṇena vākyena naiva kevalo'nvayo vyatireko vā'bhidhīyate| tadantarbhāvāttu dvitīyagatiḥ kintu parasparāntarbhūtāveva sahitāvekena vākyenābhidhīyete iti pratipādyopasaṃharannāha-“tasmāt” tatraiva sapakṣa eva bhāva ityanena vākyena na sapakṣe bhāva evocyate| kiṃ tarhi ?| asapakṣe'bhāvo'pi, tathā cetareṇāpyasapakṣe'bhāva eveti vacanena nābhāva eva kevala ucyate kintu sapakṣe bhāvo'pi, yena kevalavacanena bhāvo'bhāvo vā tadātmakatayā dvitīyamākṣiped yato'nayoḥ pṛthagvacanaṃ na syāt| tasmād yadā'nvayavyatirekau bhavābhāvāvabhipretau tadā tau bhinnarūpāveveti kathaṃ tayoḥ na pṛthaktvam ?| atha niyamavatā vākyenābhihitau tadaikavākyādevobhayagateḥ pṛthagvacanaṃ na karttavyameva| tattu kṛtaṃ nāpratipannapratipattaye kintu prayoganiyamārthamityuktametaditi|

syānmatam-yathā'nvayavyatirekau bhāvābhāvalakṣaṇau na parasparātmakau tataśca tayoḥ parasparato rūpāntaratvam, evaṃ paropalakṣaṇaśāstrapratipāditāt trailakṣaṇyād bhidyata eva jñānam, na tatrāntarbhatam, tato rūpāntaraṃ bhaviṣyatītyata āha- “naivam”, yathā'nvayavyatirekau bhāvābhāvalakṣaṇau parasparamanantarbhūtau, na tathā jñānaṃ paropalakṣaṇaśāstrapratipādite trailakṣaṇye'nantarbhūtam| kutaḥ ?| “paropalakṣaṇāt” -pare upalakṣyante upalakṣaṇa(ṇaṃ) trairūpyaviṣayāṃ pratītiṃ kāryante yena śāstreṇa tato yat trailakṣaṇyaṃ pratīyate āgṛhītajñānaṃ tasmādavyatirekādāgṛhītajñāne trailakṣaṇye'ntarbhāvāditi yāvat, “iti” tasmānna lakṣaṇāntaraṃ trairūpyāditi| tadayamatra samudāyārthaḥ- yadi jñātatvaṃ jñānaśabdapravṛttinimittaṃ uktena prakāreṇa jñānamevocyate tadā talliṃgasyānātmabhūtamiti na tallakṣaṇam| athāvi(pi) jñānāpekṣaḥ karmmabhāvo jñātatvamucyate tadā'pi jñeyasattāvyavasthāyā jñānasattānibandhanatvāt trairūpyavyavasthaiva tatsattāvyavasthāpakaṃ jñānamākṣipati| tatastadapekṣo'pi karmmabhāvo'nuktasiddha iti na tadvacanaṃ pṛthakkarttavyam| tathā paropalakṣaṇārthaśāstrapratipāditāgṛhītajñānāt trailakṣaṇyādavyatirekāditi|

tadevamabādhitaviṣayatvādikaṃ rūpatrayaṃ nirākṛtya nigamayannāha- “tasmānna hetuḥ ṣaḍlakṣaṇaḥ|” kiṃ tarhi ?| trailakṣaṇya eveti|

imaṃ kṣatāśeṣakutarkamārgaṃ,
munīśarāddhāntanayapradīpam|
vitatya puṇyaṃ yadupārjitaṃ tat,
parāṃ viśuddhiṃ jagato vidheyāt||
hetubinduṭīkā samāptā|
