[1. kāryakāraṇabhāvavyavasthā|]

tadevaṃ svabhāvahetau tādātmyasiddhinibandhanamanvayavyatirekaniścayaṃ pratipādya kāryahetau kāryakāraṇabhāvasiddhinimittatvāt tayostasyāśca pratyakṣānupalambhanibandhanāyāḥ prāgeva darśitatvāt tagdatamaparamapi pareṣāṃ bhrāntikāraṇapanetuṃ tadviṣayaṃ darśayannāha- “arthāntare” hetorvyatirikte vastuni gamye “kāryaṃ hetuḥ”| anarthāntare tu svabhāvo heturityuktam| kasmāt punararthāntare kāryameva heturityāha- “avyabhicārāt” iti kāryameva hyarthāntaraṃ na vyabhicarati nānyat yathoktaṃ prāk tataḥ kāryamevārthāntare gamye heturucyate saṃyogavaśāgdamakatve|

“na ca kenacit” ityādinā yaḥ sarvvathā gamyagamakabhāvaprasaṅga ācāryeṇoktaḥ parasya, tamihāpi kāryahetau paraḥ kadācit prasañjayedityāśaṅkamāna āha- “kāryakāraṇa-” ityādi| yadi hi kāryaṃ heturucyate tadā kāryakāraṇabhāvena kāraṇenāsya gamakatvam| tathā ca sati sarvvathā gamyagamakabhāvaḥ prāpnoti| agneḥ sāmānyadharmmavad viśeṣadharmmā api tārṇṇapārṇṇādayo gamyāḥ syuḥ| dhūmasyāpi viśeṣadharmmavad dravyatvapārthivatvādayo'pi sāmānyadharmmā gamakā bhaveyuḥ| kutaḥ ? “sarvvathā janyajanakabhāvāt”| janyajanakabhāvo hi kāryakāraṇabhāva ucyate| sa ca nāgnidhūmayoraṃśena api tu sarvveṇa prakāreṇa| tathāhi-yathā agniragnitvadravyatvasattvādibhiḥ sāmānyadharmmairjanakaḥ tathā tārṇṇapārṇṇatvādibhirvviśeṣadharmmairapi, yathā ca dhūmo dhūmatvapāṇḍutvādibhiḥ svaniyatairvviśeṣadharmmairjanyaḥ tathā sāmānyadharmmairapi sattvadravyatvādibhiḥ| tataśca yathā tayoḥ kāryakāraṇabhāvaḥ tathaiva gamyagamakabhāvaḥ prāpnoti, tasyaiva tannibandhanatvāditi pūrvvapakṣāśaṅkā| atrāha-“na sarvvathā janyajanakabhāvaḥ” tataśca kutastathā gamyagamakabhāvaḥ syāt ?| kasmāt ? iti cet, “tadabhāve” teṣāṃ tārṇṇapārṇṇatvādināṃ viśeṣadharmmāṇāmabhāve “bhavato” dhūmamātrasya tebhya eva viśeṣadharmmebhyo bhavatīti evamātmanaḥ “tadutpattiniyamasyābhāvāt”| tathā “tadabhāve” agnyabhāve bhavato dravyatvādeḥ sāmānyadharmmasyāgnerevāyaṃ bhavatī tyevaṃrūpasya tadutpattiniyamasyābhāvāt kutaḥ sarvvathā janyajanakabhāvaḥ ?, yataḥ sarvvathā gamyagamakabhāvaḥ syāt| na hyasati tadutpattiniyame janyajanakabhāvo vyavasthāpayituṃ yuktaḥ| yata evaṃ “tasmāt kāryaṃ” dhūmādikaṃ “svabhāvairyāvabhdi” rdhūmatvādibhiḥ svagataiḥ| itthambhūtalakṣaṇā ca tṛtīyā| “avīnābhāvi” vinā na bhavati| kairvvinā na bhavati ?| ‘kāraṇe yāvabhdiḥ svabhāvaiḥ’ ityatrāpi sambadhyate| kāraṇāśritairyāvabhdiḥ svabhāvairvvinā te kāryagatāḥ svabhāvā na bhavanti hetuḥ taisteṣāmiti gamyate| kva avinābhāvi?| “kāraṇe” kāraṇaviṣaye aparo'rthaḥ “kāraṇe” ādhārasaptamī| idānīṃ kāraṇasthaiḥ svabhāvairyāvabhdiragnitvadravyatvādibhiravinābhāvi teṣāṃ kāraṇagatānāṃ sāmānyadharmmāṇāṃ hetuḥ kāryaṃ gamakam| kasmāt ? ityāha- “tatkāryatvaniyamāt” teṣāmeva kāraṇagatānāṃ sāmānyadharmmānāṃ tat kāryamityevaṃrūpasya niyamasya sabhdāvāt| nahi tān sāmānyadharmmān kadācidapi kāryaṃ vyabhicarati|

evaṃ kāraṇagatamaṃśaṃ pāścātyenārthena nirūpya prāktanenārthena kāryagatamaṃśaṃ nirūpayannāha- “taireva ca” ityādi| kāryamapi taireva dharmmaiḥ svagataiḥ kāraṇagatānāṃ dharmmāṇāṃ gamakam yathā'ntarā sambhavino dhūmatvapāṇḍupārṇṇatvādayo viśeṣarūpāstaiḥ kāraṇagataiḥ sāmānyadharmmairvvinā na bhavanti| atrāpi ‘tatkāryatvaniyamāt’ ityapekṣyate| teṣāmeva kāryagatānāṃ viśeṣadharmmāṇāṃ kāraṇagatasāmānyadharmmāpekṣayā kāryatvaniyamāt| na hi te viśeṣadharmmāḥ kāryagatāḥ kāraṇasthasāmānyadharmmairvvinā kadācidapi bhavanti| tatasteṣāmeva kāryatvaniyamaḥ, nānyeṣāṃ dravyatvādīnāṃ kāraṇasthasāmānyadharmmairvinā bhavatām| tadevaṃ kāraṇasya sāmānyadharmmā eva gamyā na viśeṣadharmmāḥ, kāryasyāpi viśeṣadharmmā eva gamakā na sāmānyadharmmāḥ, tatkāryatvaniyamāt| ye tu kāraṇasya viśeṣadharmmā yaistatkāryatvaniyamaḥ kāryamātrasya nāstīti na te gamyāḥ| ye ca kāryasya sāmānyadharmmā dravyatvādayasteṣāmapi tatkāryatvaniyamābhāvādeva gamakatvaṃ nāstīti kāryakāraṇabhāvena gamakatve kutaḥ sarvvathā gamyagamakabhāvaḥ pareṣāmiva prasajyeta ?|

[2. janyajanakabhāvasya sarvathā sattve'pi gamyagamakabhāvasya na tathātvam|]
parasyāniṣṭhāpādanamāśaṅkayāha- “aṃśena” ityādi| yadi hi kāraṇasya sāmānyadharmmā eva gamyāḥ kāryasyāpi viśeṣadharmmā eva gamakāḥ tatkāryatvaniyamādiṣyante, hanta tarhyaśena janyajanakabhāvaḥ prāptaḥ| kāraṇasya sāmānyadharmmā eva janakā na viśeṣadharmmāḥ, kāryasyāpi viśeṣadharmmā eva janyā na sāmānyadharmmā iti syāt| sarvvathā ca janyajanakabhāvo'bhimata ityubhyupagamavirodhaḥ| etat pariharati-nāṃśena janyajanakabhāvaprasaṅgaḥ, niraṃśatvena vastunaḥ sarvvātmanā tadabhyupagamāt, gamyagamakabhāvasyāpi sarvvathā'bhimatatvāt| tadāha- “tajjanya” ityādi| yadi hi kāryasya taiḥ kāraṇagatairvviśeṣadharmmairjanyo yo viśeṣaḥ sa grahītuṃ śakyate, tadā tajjanyaviśeṣagrahaṇe'bhimatatvāt kāraṇagataviśeṣadharmmāṇāṃ gamyatvasya| tathā liṅgaviśeṣo dhūmatvādi upādhirviśeṣaṇaṃ yeṣāṃ dravyatvādīnāṃ sāmānyānāṃ kāryagatānāṃ teṣāṃ cābhimatatvāgdamakatvasya| tathā hi-agurudhūmagrahaṇe bhavatyeva tadagneranumānaṃ dhūmatvaviśeṣaṇena ca dravyatvādinā'gneranumānam| na hi sarvvathā janyajanakabhāvo'stītyeva tathaiva gamyagamakabhāvo bhavati, tasya jñānāpekṣatvāt| tathā hi- na sattāmātreṇa liṅgasya gamakatvam, tasya jñāpakatvāt| jñāpako hi svaniścayāpekṣo jñāpyamarthaṃ jñāpayati, nānyathā| kathaṃ tarhyuktaṃ “tadabhāve bhavataḥ tadutpattiniyama(mā)bhāvāt” iti| ?| sarvvathā janyajanakabhāvābhyupagame tadabhāve bhāvasyaivābhāvādityata āha- “aviśiṣṭa”- ityādi| yadi hi tajjanyaviśeṣa grahaṇarahitamaviśiṣṭaṃ kāryamātramupādīyate liṅgaviśeṣopādhirahitaṃ vā dravyādikaṃ tadā “aviśiṣṭasāmānyavivakṣāyāṃ” kāraṇagataviśeṣābhāve'pi dhūmamātrasya bhāvāt tadaviśiṣṭasya ca dravyatvāderagnyabhāve'pi bhāvād vyabhicāra iti sarvvathā janyajanakabhāvo neṣyate, tadabhāvād gamyagamakabhāvaśca| na tu viśeṣavivakṣāyām, tatra vyabhicārābhāvāt| tathā hi-yadi nāmadhūmamātraṃ tārṇṇapārṇṇādiviśeṣābhāve bhavati, na tu tajjanyo viśeṣaḥ, sa yadi grahītuṃ śakyate, tadā viśeṣasya gamyatvamastyeva, niścitasyaiva liṅgatvāt| tathā yadyapi dravyatvasattvamātramagnyabhāve'pi bhavati na tu dhūmātmakamiti tadviśiṣṭasyāvyabhicārād gamakatvamapi na vāryata iti|

[3. kāryakāraṇabhāvapratīteratidurlabhatvāśaṅkāyā nirāsaḥ|]
atra parasya vacanāvakāśamāśaṅkayāha-“kasyacit” dhūmādeḥ “kadācit” kasmiṃścit kāle “kutaścit” agnyādeḥ “bhāve'pi” sati “sarvvo” dhūmādiḥ “tādṛśo” yādṛśa ekadā'gnyāderbhavana dṛṣṭa tajjātīyaḥ, “tathāvidhajanmā” yathāvidhāt sa eko bhavan dṛṣṭaḥ tādṛśādeva janma yasya sa| “tathāvighajanmetyetat kutaḥ” pramāṇādavasitam ? yenocyate ‘kāryahetau kāryakāraṇabhāvasiddhinibandhanāvanvayavyatirekau’ iti| tathāhi-yadi nāma pratyakṣānupalambhābhyāṃ kasyaciddhūmasyāgnyādisāmagrīkāryatvamavagataṃ kimetāvatā'nyasyāpi tādṛśasya tādṛśakāryatā sidhyati, tatra tannibandhanayoḥ pratyakṣānupalambhayoravyāpārāt| yatraiva hi tayorvyāparastasyaiva tatkāryatā bhavatu, tadanyasya tu kimāyātam ? yena tathavidhādasya janma syāt| evaṃ hi kasyāściddhūmavyakteragnyādijanyatā dṛṣṭeti kinna ghaṭāderapi sā'bhyupagamyate ? anyatvena viśeṣābhāvāt| ka evaṃ sati doṣaḥ ? iti cet ; tathā ca pramāṇābhāvena tathāvidhajanmatvāniścayādatādṛśādapi janmāśaṅkāyāṃ tādṛśasya dhūmāderagnyādinā'nvayavyatirekau na niścitāviti kutaḥ kāryahetorggamakatvam ?| na hi yo'sāveko deśakālāvasthāniyato'gniviśeṣahetuko dhūmo'dhigataḥ pratyakṣānupalambhābhyāṃ tasyaivānvayavyatirekau pratipattavyau| tasya deśāntarādāvasambhavāt| kiṃ tarhi ?| tādṛśasya sāmānyātmana eva liṅgatvāt tasya cātathāvidhādapi janmāśaṅkāyāṃ kutastathāvidhenānvayo vyatireko vā ?| taduktam-

“avasthādeśakālānāṃ bhedād bhinnāsu śaktiṣu|
bhāvānāmanumānena pratītiratidurllabhā||” iti|
siddhāntavādyāha- “na, atabhdāvinaḥ” ityādi| evaṃ manyate-ihaikadā dhūmāderagnyādisāmagrījanyatayā pratyākṣānupalambhābhyāṃ niścitarūpatve'pi tādṛśasyātādṛśādapi bhāvaḥ samāśaṅkyate yathāparidṛṣṭādanyatvena| tatra yo'sāvagnyādisāmagrījanyo dhūmaviśeṣa ekadā niścitastadapekṣayā yathā'nyo dhūmaviśeṣastādṛśo yo'nyādṛśādapi-bhāvānāṃ vicitraśaktitayā-bhavediti śaṅkayate, tathā so'pyekadā'gnyādisāmagrījanyatayā niścitastadanyāpekṣayā tādṛśa eva| tatra yadi tadanyasya tādṛśasyātādṛśājjanma syāt tadā tādṛśasya svabhāvasya nāgnyādisāmagrījanyasvabhāvateti paridṛṣṭasyāpi dhūmasya nāgnyādisāmagrī kāraṇamityāyātam| tādṛśasya svabhāvasyā'gnyādisāmagrīvilakṣaṇakāraṇajanyasvabhāvatvāt| tataścāgnyādisāmagryā akāraṇatvāt yo mayaikadā tato bhavan dṛṣṭo dhūmaḥ so'pi na bhavet| nahi yad yasya kāraṇaṃ na bhavati tat tataḥ sakṛdapi jāyate, tasyāhetukatvaprasaṅgāditi| “atabhdāvinaḥ” iti tacchabdena vivakṣitamagnyādikāraṇaṃ parigṛhyate, na tat atat, tavdilakṣaṇaṃ atādṛśaṃ śakramurddhādikam, atasmād bhavituṃ śīlaṃyasya tasyātabhdāvinastādṛśasya tallakṣaṇasya dhūmavastunaḥ “sakṛdapi” ekadā'pi “tataḥ” agnyādeḥ “abhāvād” bhāvavirodhāt| bhavati ca tādṛśo'gnyādisāmagrītaḥ tatastādṛśasya svabhāvasya tādṛśameva kāraṇamityavagamyate sakṛtpravṛttābhyāmeva pratyakṣānupalambhābhyāmiti kuto vyabhicārāśaṅkā ?| tena yādṛśo dhūmo'gnyādisāmagryā bhavan dṛṣṭaḥ sakṛt tādṛśasya tasya tajjanyasvabhāvatayā tādṛśādeva bhāvāt ‘yatra dhūmastatrāgnyādisāmagrī’ ityanvayavyatirekaniścayaḥ|

athavā'nyathā vyākhyāyate- iha pratyakṣānupalambhanibandhanā kāryakāraṇabhāvasiddhiḥ prāguktā tannibandhanāvanvayavyatirekau pratipādayitum, taccāyuktam| tathā hi- “kasyacit” dhūmasyāgnyādisāmagryanantarabhāvina ādyasya “kadācit” prathamotpādakāle “kutaścid” agnyādisāmagryāḥ “bhāve'pi” utpāde'pi “sarvvastādṛśo” yādṛśaḥ prathamakṣaṇabhāvī dhūmo dvitīyādikṣaṇeṣvapi tādṛśaḥ pratyakṣata eva tasya pūrvvakṣaṇāvilakṣaṇatayā pratīteḥ| “tathāvidhajanmā” iti yathāvidhādagnīndhanasāmagrīlakṣaṇāt kāraṇādādyo dhūmakṣaṇa utpannastathāvidhājjanma yasya sa “tathāvidhajanmetyetat kutaḥ” naiva tasya dhūmāderabhāvāt| evaṃ ca yadyato dṛṣṭaṃ tasyānyato'pi bhāvasya darśanāt sarvvatrānāśvāsa iti manyamāna āha- “tathā ca” anagnito dhūmādapi dhūmasya bhāve śakramūrddhāderapi tasya bhāvāvirodhādagninā dhūmasya nanvayavyatirekāviti cenmanyase iti pūrvvapakṣāśaṅkā|

taduktam-
“kṣaṇikatve kathaṃ bhāvāḥ kvacidāyattavṛttayaḥ|
prasiddhakāraṇābhāve yeṣāṃ bhāvastato'nyataḥ||
ataścānagnito mād yathā dhūmasya sambhavaḥ|
śakramūrdvnastathā tasya kena vāryeta saṃbhavaḥ||”iti|

siddhāntavādyāha- nā'gnīndhanasāmagrījanyo yādṛśo dhūmastādṛśa eva dhūmādapi bhavati kāraṇabhedena| kutaścit sāmyāt sarūpatayā'vasīyamānasyāpyanyādṛśatvāt| tādṛśo hyagnīndhanasāmagrīkṣaṇāntarajanya ādya evāparaḥ kṣaṇastathā tadanya ādya evāparāgnīndhanasāmagrījanya iti tādṛśasya dhūmasya dhūmādasambhavāt na kvacidanāśvāsaḥ kāryaḥ| tathā yādṛśo dvitīyakṣaṇabhāvī prathamadhūmakṣaṇajanito dhūmakṣaṇastādṛśo'paraprathamadhūmakṣaṇajanita eva dvitīyo dhūmakṣaṇo na tṛtīyādiḥ| evaṃ tṛtīyakṣaṇādiṣvapyaṅkurādiṣu ca sarvvatra vācyam| kutaḥ punarayaṃ vibhāgaḥ ? iti cet, āha- “atabhdāvinaḥ” atasmād-anagnīndhanādirūpād dhūmād bhavanaśīlasya prathamakṣaṇāvilakṣaṇasya dhūmasya “sakṛdapi” ekadāpi “tataḥ” agnyādisāmagryāḥ “abhāvāda” bhāvāyogād| yathā hi prathamakṣaṇāpekṣayā dvitīyastādṛśastathā tadapekṣayā prathamo'pīti tādṛśatvāviśeṣāt tādṛśasyānagnito bhāve tādṛśo nāgnijanyasvabhāvaḥ iti sakṛdapi tato na bhavet| bhavan vā tajjanyasvabhāvatāmātmānastādṛśaḥ khyāpayatīti kuto'nyādṛśād bhavet ? tasmādanyādṛśād bhavannanyādṛśa eva tato na vyabhicāraḥ|

[4. bhinnakāraṇajanyānāṃ dhūmānāṃ atādṛśatve'pi sādṛśyāt tādṛśatvābhimānaḥ|]
nanu sarvveṣāṃ dhūmakṣāṇānāṃ kaṇṭhakṣaṇanākṣisrutikālīkaraṇādikāyāmarthakriyāyāmupayogāt kathaṃ tādṛśasvabhāvatā na syāt ?| na, tasyā apyarthakriyāyāḥ kṣaṇabhedopadhīyamānarūpāyāḥ tādṛśatvābhāvāt tatrāpi tulyadoṣatvāt| kathaṃ tarhi loke sarvvatra dhūmavyavahāraḥ iti cet; sadṛśāparabhāvanibandhanaikatvādhyavasāyavaśāt kṣaṇiarvyavahārāyogācca| sādṛśye sati kathaṃ na tādṛśatā ? iti cet| tādṛśādanyatvāt sadṛśasya| tathā hi-gosadṛśo bhavati gavayaḥ na tu tādṛśaḥ, gorevāparasya tādṛśatvāt| paramārthenātādṛśe'pi tādṛśābhimāno mandamatīnāṃ bhavan kathaṃ nivārtyet ?| tathā hi-tattvādhyavasāyo'pi tāvad-atasminnarvvāgdṛśāṃ vinivārayituṃ na pāryate, kimaṅga punastādṛśatvādhyavasāyaḥ ? yathoktam-

“samānavarṇṇasaṃsthāne santāne'tyatra jāyate|
atasmiṃstanmatiḥ puṃsāṃ kimutaikatra saṃtatau ?||” iti|
tattvacintakāstu tādṛśātādṛśakāraṇabhedāt tādṛśātādṛśatāṃ bhāvānāṃ anumanyante na tādṛśatām| tad yadyatādṛśādapi tadṛśo bhavet tadā tasya tajjanyaḥ svabhāva ityatadbhāvinaḥ sakṛdapi tato bhāvo na syāt| amumevārthaṃ samarthayamana āha- “parasparāpekṣayā” ityādi| kāraṇāpekṣayā hi janyasvabhāvaṃ kāryam, kāryāpekṣayā ca janakasvabhāvaṃ kāraṇam| yato hi kāraṇād yad bhavad dṛṣṭam tasya tajjanyasvabhāvaḥ, itarasya ca tajjanaka iti pratīyate| anyathā tasya tato bhāvāyogāt, itarasya ca tajjananāyogāt| yadi nāmaivaṃ tataḥ prakṛte kiṃ siddham ? ityata āha- “tatra” etasmin nyāye sati “yadi dhūmo” yādṛśa ādyo'gnyādisāmagrījanitastādṛśo dvitīyādikṣaṇabhāvī “agnyādisāmagryā” agnīndhanādikāraṇakalāpāt tajjanakasvabhāvatayā nirddhāritā “danyato”'gnīndhanādisāmagrījanitādādyāddhūmakṣaṇād bhavet| tadā “tasya” tādṛśasya dhūmasvabhāvasya “tajjanyo”'gnyādisāmagrījanyaḥ “svabhāvo na bhavati” kintu dhūmajanya eveti kṛtvā sakṛdapi “tato”'gnyādisāmagrīto “na bhaveta”| tādṛśasya hi svabhāvasyānyato bhāve tajjanyasvabhāvatā, nāgnyādijanyasvabhāvateti kutaḥ sakṛdapi tato bhāvo yujyeta| atra dṛṣṭāntaḥ “arthāntaravad” iti| yathā hyarthāntaramatajjanyābhimatamanyato bhavat na tajjanyasvabhāvaṃ nāgnyādisāmagrījanyasvabhāvamiti sakṛdapi tato na bhavati tadvat tādṛśo dhūmo'pīti tato bhavannanyādṛśa evāsāviti gamyate|

syānmatam- agnyādisāmagryā'sāvatajjanyasvabhāvo'pi tādṛśo balājjanyate kastasya tapasvino'parādhaḥ ? ityata āha- “nāpi” na kevalaṃ svayamatajjanyasvabhāvatayā tato na bhavet, kintvagnyādisāmagryapi taṃ tādṛśaṃ dhūmaṃ-yādṛśo dvitīyādikṣaṇabhāvī-na janayet| kutaḥ ?| atajjananasvabhāvatvāt| tādṛśasya hyanyato bhāve sa eva tajjananasvabhāvo nāgnyādisāmagrīti tajjananasvabhāvavikalā kathaṃ taṃ janayet ?| atrāpyudāharaṇam- “sāmagryantaravaditi”| yathā sāmagryantaramatajjananasvabhāvābhimataṃ na janayati tadvadagnyādisāmagryapi| tathā hi- sā ātmīyaṃ svabhāvamanusṛtyaiva pravarttate, tataḥ kuto'sau sāmagrībalājjāyeta ?|

[5. tādṛśātādṛśajanyatve kāryasyāpi tādṛśātādṛśatvam|]
syānmatam-agnyādisāmagrījanyasvabhāvo'pi tādṛśo dhūmo dhūmajanyasvabhāvo'pi yathā sa eva dhūma indhanajanyasvabhāvo'gnijanyasvabhāvaścobhayato bhavati| tathā tādṛśo'pi dhūma ubhayasāmagrījanyasvabhāvatayobhayato bhaviṣyatītyata āha- “na ca” naiva “dhūmasya” tādṛśasya “tadatajjanyaḥ” agnyādisāmagrījanyo dhūmajanyaśca “svabhāvo yuktaḥ” yuktyā saṅgataḥ| kutaḥ ? “ekasvabhāvatvāt” tādṛśasya dhūmarūpasya bhedābhāvāt| nahi tasya kālabhede'pi tādṛgrūpatā bhidyate| bhede hyanyādṛśasyānyādṛśābhdāve vivādāyogāt| tasya yadi tādṛśātādṛśakāraṇajanyatā syāt tatastādṛśātādṛśasvabhāvataiva syāt| tadeva darśayannāha- “dhūmā'dhūma”-ityādi| dhūmaśabdena yādṛśo'gnyādisāmagrījanyastādṛśaḥ svabhāvo'bhipretaḥ, adhūmaśabdenānyādṛśakāraṇajanyo dhūmajanito'nyādṛśaḥ| tayośca tādṛśātādṛśakāraṇajanyatayaiva tādṛśātādṛśasvabhāvatā'vagantavyā vakṣyamāṇanītyā| tenāgnidhūmalakṣaṇāt “dhūmādhūmajananasvabhāvāt” tādṛśātādṛśajananasvabhāvāt tādṛśātādṛśatayā'sya bhavato dhūmādhūma[svabhāva]stādṛśātādṛśasvabhāvaḥ syāt kutastādṛśa eva ?| kuta etat? ityāha- “kāryasvabhāvānām” ityādi| kāryāṇāṃ hi ye svabhāvāḥ parasparāsaṃbhavinaḥ te parasparavilakṣaṇakāraṇasāmagrīsvabhāvakṛtā na svābhāvikā ahetukatvaprasaṅgāt| tatastādṛśātādṛśād bhavato dhūmasya tādṛśātādṛśasvabhāvataiva syāt|

syānmatam-naiva tādṛśātādṛśasvabhāvatāyāṃ tādṛśātādṛśakāraṇāpekṣā, kāryāṇāmutpattimātra eva kāraṇāpekṣaṇādityata āha- “akāraṇāpekṣaṇe ca” tādṛśātādṛśarūpatāyāṃ tādṛśātādṛśa-kāraṇānapekṣaṇe ca tādṛśātādṛśatāyāḥ “ahetukatvaprasaṅgāt”| na hi tādṛśātādṛśasvabhāvayorabhūtvā bhāvavyatirekeṇānyā kācidutpattiḥ yatra tādṛśātādṛśasvabhāvakāraṇanirapekṣāṇāmapi tadapekṣā syāt| tasmādutpattiśabdena tādṛśātādṛśasvabhāvataivocyata iti| tatra kāraṇāpekṣopagame kathaṃ tādṛśātādṛśatāyāṃ kāraṇāpekṣā na syāt| tasmāt sāmagrīṇāṃ tādṛśātādṛśatvādeva kāryāṇāṃ tādṛśātādṛśasvabhāvavibhāga iti kuto'nyādṛśāttādṛśasambhavaḥ ? iti|

yattūktaṃ ‘yathaiko dhūmo'gnīndhanābhyāṃ vilakṣaṇābhyāṃ janyate tathaikalakṣaṇamapi kāryaṃ vilakṣaṇādapi sāmagryantarād bhaviṣyati’ iti| tadayuktam| yato nāsmābhirvvilakṣaṇānāṃ janakatvaṃ vāryate janayantyeva paraspavilakṣaṇā api svahetupariṇāmopanidhidharmmāṇastadavasthāniyatāḥ tadekaṃ kāryaṃ, tasya tu teṣāṃ ca parasparāpekṣayā janyajanakasvabhāvatāniyamāt tādṛśasya tādṛśādeva janmocyate nānyādṛśāt, tasyātajjananasvabhāvatvāt, tadabhāve'pyanyato bhavatastadutpattiniyamābhāvāt| aniyame ca kāryakāraṇabhāvāyogāt| yadi tvagnirivendhanopādānopakṛtastadupādānopakṛtaṃ cendhanamiva tadavasthāniyatamatādṛśamapi dhūmādikaṃ tādṛśaṃ dhūmaṃ janayet pratyakṣānupalambhābhyāṃ ca tathā'vagamyeta tadā'gnyādivat so'pi tajjananasvabhāvatāniyamāt tādṛśajanakaḥ kena nānumanyeta| tadabhāve'pi tu tādṛśasya bhāve tayorjanyajanakasvabhāvatāniyamābhāvāt kutaḥ kāryakāraṇatetyahetutaiva tādṛśasyānyādṛśād bhavataḥ syāt| yata evaṃ “tasmāt” so'gnīndhanādisāmagrīviśeṣo mantavyo “yaḥ” ādya “dhūmajanano” nānyaḥ “sa” dhūma ādyo yaḥ “gnyādisāmagrīviśeṣeṇa” janito nānya a iti kṛtvā kāryakāraṇayorevaṃ yathoktena nyāyena janyajanakarūpasya svabhāvasya niyamād yādṛśaṃ yasya kāraṇamekadā pratyakṣānupalambhābhyāmevāvadhāritaṃ “tadvijātīyāt” tato'nyādṛśāt kāraṇāt “utpattiḥ” tādṛśasya kāryasya “na bhavati” anyādṛśasya eva na vāryata iti|

tadevaṃ tādṛśātādṛśakāraṇakṛtakatvaṃ tādṛśātādṛśakāryasvabhāvasya pratipādyopasaṃharannāha- “tat” tasmāt yādṛśaṃ kāryaṃ yādṛśāt kāraṇāt dṛṣṭaṃ pratyakṣānupalambhābhyāṃ niścitamekadā tat t“nna vyabhicarati” tādṛśamanyādṛśānna bhavati| yanaivaṃ “tena” kāraṇena “siddhe kāryakāraṇabhāve” tādṛśasya “kāryasya” tādṛśameva kāraṇamiti niścaye sati yathoditena nyāyena “kāryasya kāraṇena vyāptira”nvayavyatirekarūpā “siddhā” bhavati|

“na vijātīyādutpattiriti” dṛṣṭakāraṇavijātīyāt kāraṇādanyādṛśānnotpattirityasamumarthamapratipadyamānaḥ kāryasya vijātīyāt kāraṇānnotpattirityayamatrārtho'bhimata iti manvānaḥ paraścodayannāha- “nanu” svato “vijātīyādapi” kāraṇāt “kiñcit” kāryaṃ “bhavad dṛṣṭaṃ” tat kathaṃ na vijātīyādutpattirityasya na dṛṣṭavirodhaḥ syāt| kathaṃ yathā ityāha- “tad yathā gomayādeḥ” ādigrahaṇāt śṛṅgacandrakāntādeḥ “ śālūkādi” ādigrahaṇāccharodakādi| tathā hi- gomayācchālūkasya bhāvaḥ śṛṅgāccharasya candrakāntādapāma| na ca gomayādikaṃ śālūkādernna vijātīyam tat kimucyate na vijātīyādutpattiḥ iti| siddhāntavādī parasya bhrāṃtatāṃ darśayannāha- “na vijātīyādutpattiḥ” iti| yato hi kāraṇād yad bhavad dṛṣṭaṃ tat tato'nyādṛśānna bhavati ityayamatrārtho vivakṣitaḥ, na tu kāryavijātīyāditi| na ca tasya vyabhicāraḥ| tadāha-“tathāvidhameva hi” gomayādirūpaṃ “tādṛśaṃ” śālakādīnāmā “dinimittaṃ” śālūkādiprabandhasya ya ādiḥ prathama ārambhakṣaṇaḥ tasya kāraṇamiti kṛtvā śālūkādiprabandhasyādernna kāraṇābhedo'nyādṛśādutpattiḥ| sarvvasya tadā''derggomayādinimittatvāt| yadā tu prabandhena pūrvvakṣaṇanimittānāmuttarottarakṣaṇānāṃ santānenotpattilakṣaṇā vṛttirbhavati śarasya tadā śarābhdāvaḥ| tadevaṃ yasya prabandhādeḥ śṛṅgādibhyo bhāvo na tādṛśasya śarādeḥ yasya ca śārādestuduttarottarasya bhāvo na tādṛśasya śṛṅgāderiti na dṛṣṭakāraṇavijātīyāt kāraṇāt tādṛśasya sambhava iti kāryahetoranvayavyatirekaniścayaḥ|

yadā'pi śālūkādayaḥ pūrvvapūrvvasvajātinibandhanā anādisantānapravṛttā iṣyante tadā'pi gomayādibhyaḥ keṣāñcibhdāve'pi tādṛśatvābhāvānna vyabhicāra iti darśayannāha- “asti ca” ityādi| yasya śālūkasantānasya gomayādi kāraṇaṃ yasya ca sarvvadā svajātinimittatvaṃ tayorgomayetarajanmanoḥ śālūkayorastyeva svabhāvabhedaḥ parasparamanyādṛśatvaṃ “rūpasyābhede'pi” sati| tulyākāratve sati kathamanyādṛśatvam ? iti cet, āha- “nahi” ityādi| yasmānnākāratulyataiva bhāvānāṃ “tattve” tādṛśatve nimittam yato gomayetarajanmanoḥ śālūkayorākārasāmyāt tādṛśatvameva syānna jātibhedaḥ| kuta etat ? ityāha- “abhinnākārāṇāmapi” ityādi| yeṣāmapi hi samānākāratā keṣāñcibhdāvānāṃ teṣāmapi yata ākārādanyato viśeṣājjātibhedo dṛśyate tato nākārasāmyameva jātyekatve nibandhanam| tathā hi-ākārasāmye'pi kvacit puṣpād bhedo dṛśyate nīletarakusumayoriva sūryayoḥ, kvacitphalāt bandhyetarayoriva karkkoṭakyoḥ, kvacid rasād vanyetarayoriva trapuṣayoḥ, kvacid gandhād vṛkṣetaraprabhavayoriva campakayoḥ, kvacit prabhāvāt sparśopayogastraṃsinyoriva haritakyoriti| tasmādākārasāmyanibandhanaṃ yadyapi ‘tadevedam’ iti pratyabhijñānaṃ sajātīyatāṃ goamayetarajanmanoḥ śālakayorūpakalpayati tathāpi vilakṣaṇasāmagrījanyatayā tayorjātibheda evāvagantavyaḥ, naikajātitā| tata eva pratyabhijñānasya bhrāntatayā tatkalpitasya tādṛśatvasyālīkatvāt|

[6. vilakṣaṇasāmagryā avilakṣaṇakāryajanakatve doṣāḥ|]
yadi punargomayetarādijanmanaḥ śālūkākāderagnidhūmādijanmano vā dhūmādeḥ pratyabhijñāvaśād vilakṣaṇasāmagrīnibandhanatve'pi samānasvabhāvataiva syāt ko doṣaḥ syāt ? ityata āha-“anyathā hi” ityādi| yadi hi yā svajāti [lakṣaṇapratyayāntarasahitā sāmagrī yā ca] svajātinirapekṣā gomayādirūpā śālūkādeḥ, dhūmasya vā yā'gnīnadhanādilakṣaṇā yā ca śakramūrdvādisvabhāvā dhūmādyātmikā avi(kā tasyāḥ vi)lakṣaṇāyā api sāmagryā avilakṣaṇaṃ tādṛśameva kāryaṃ dhūmaśālūkādikamutpadyeta tadā na ‘kāraṇasya’ sāmagrīrūpasya “bhedābhedābhyāṃ” vailakṣaṇyāvailakṣaṇyābhyāṃ kāryasya “bhedābhedau” vailakṣaṇyāvailakṣaṇye tajjātīyavijātīyātmake syātāmiti kṛtvā “viśvasya” sakalasya padārtharāśeḥ “ahetukau bhedābhedau” sajātīyavijātīyatve syātām| tasmād yatra vilakṣaṇā sāmagrī tatra kutaścit sāmyāt sarūpatve'pi vijātīyataiva kāryasyeti|

nanu dhūmendhanādisāmagrībhede'pi dhūmasya na jātibhedamāmananti vidvāṃsaḥ, atadrūpaparāvṛtterubhayatra samānatvāt, naiṣa doṣaḥ, kṣaṇabhedāśrayasūkṣmāvāntarajātibhede'pi sthūlasantānāśrayavijātīyavyāvṛtteḥ samānatvāt| śābaleyādyavāntarajātibhedepyagovyāvṛttinibandhanagojātivad gavāṃ sarvvadhūmānāmekasantānavyavasthāvyu(pyu)pādānakāraṇakṣaṇabhede'pyekākārapratyayanibandhanatayā samānatvāt| ādyasyendhanaprabhavasya katham ? iti cet| na| indhanajātyanuvidhānāt sarvvadhūmānām| tathā hi-agurukarpūracandanādijātibhedamanukurvvantyeva taddhūmāḥ, kāsaśvāsādiharadravyanirmmitavarttibhedaṃ ca taddhūmāḥ, tadrasavīryavipākānuvidhānāt| na cākārānyatayā vijātīyatvam, yato nākāra'bhedabhedanibandhena sajātīyavijātīyatve| nahi śālyaṅkurādayaḥ tabdījādyākāramanukurvvate| na ca tajjātīyatāmaśālyādivyāvṛttinibandhanāṃ nānubhavanti| tasmād indhanameva tayopādānakāraṇam agnyādisahakāripratyayāhitaviśeṣaṃ tathāvidhaṃ dhūmakāryamaṅgārādi bhinnākṛti janayatītyalamatiprasaṅgena|

nanu ca yadi nāma sāmagrībhede'pi kāryasya bhedo na jātaḥ tadā kāraṇabhede satyapi tasyābhāvāt tasyāhetukatā'stu, abhedasya tu kimāyātam ? yenobhayorahetukatvamucyate ityata āha- “tathāhi” ityādi| yadā hi sāmagrībhede satyapi kāryasya bhedo na jāta iti tasyāhetukatvam- na hi hetau satyabhavataḥ kathañcidapi hetumattopapadyate-tadā yo'pyasāvabhedaḥ kāryasya so'pi sāmagryoḥ bhinnatvādasatyabhede jāta iti kutastasyāpi hetumattā ?| yathā hi hetau satyabhavato na hetumattā tathā hetāvasatyapi bhavato hetumattā kutaḥ syāt ?| hetubhedasyaivā'bhedanibandhanatvāt na iti cet; na tarhyayaṃ bhedaḥ kvacit padamābadhnīyāt, śālīkodravāderapi hetubhedasyābhedahetutvānnimittamantareṇa kalpanāyāṃ viśeṣābhāvāt| pratibhāsābhedasya ca kutaścid bhrāntinimittāt paramārthato bhede'pyupalakṣaṇāt| syādetat- yo hyatādṛśādapi tādṛśobhdavamicchati tasya bhedābhedayorahetukatvamiṣṭameva bhāvā eva kevalaṃ hetumanta ityata āha- “tadvyatiriktaśca” ityādi| nahi bhedābhedavyatiriktaḥ kaścid bhāvānāṃ svabhāvo'sti yastayorahetukatve'pi hetumān syāt| tasya tābhyāmanyatve ‘asyemau bhedābhedau’ iti sambandhābhāvaprasaṅgāt, tadanyasambandhakalpanāyāmanavasthādoṣāt, ananyatve'pi bhedābhedayorbhāvasvabhāvasya ca svātmanyevāvasthānāt anupakārācca kutaḥ sambandhitā ?| upakārakalpanāyāṃ ca yadi bhāvasvabhāvaḥ svahetubhya eva na kutaścid bhinno'bhinno vā samutpanna itīṣyate, tadā tabhdāve'pi svabhāvānyathātvābhāvāt kuto bhinnābhinnatā bhāvasvabhāvasya syāt ?| atha vyatiriktabhedābhedavaśād bhedābhedau svabhāvaḥ pratipadyeta, tāvapi yadi bhinnau tadā bhāvasvabhāvastadavastha eveti na tasya kutaścit svarūpato bhedo'bhedo vā syāt| punastadvaśād bhedābhedakalpanāyāṃ bhāvasvabhāvasya tadavasthaṃ tādavasthyamanavasthā ca bhedābhedayoḥ| athābhinnau tadā bhāvasvabhāva eva bhedābhedābhyāṃ kriyata iti syāt, tasya rūpāntareṇa karaṇāsambhā(mbha)vāt; tasya ca hetvantarāt paścād bhavatastato'nyatvāpatteḥ| na ca bhāvasvabhāvaḥ kriyate, tasya svahetoreva nirvṛtteḥ| svahetubhya eva bhāvasvabhāvasya kutaścid bhinnābhinnātmana utpattikalpanāyāṃ vā bhedābhedayorvyatirekavatoḥ vaiyarthyam; bhedābhedabuddherapi tata eva siddheḥ| tasmād vaiśeṣikādikalpitayorbhedābhedayorvviśeṣasāmānyātmanorayogāt bhāvasvabhāva eva bhedābhedaśabdavācyaḥ tayorahetukatve bhāvasvabhāvasyaivāhetukatvamāpatitam| tato bhāvānāmahetukatvānnityaṃ sattvamasattvaṃ vā syāt| ahetukatve hi bhāvānāṃ yadi kadācit sattvaṃ sarvvadaiva syāt| atha kadācidasattvaṃ tadapi sarvvadā syāt| kādācitkatvaṃ tu sattvasyāyuktam| kiṃ kāraṇam ?| apekṣyasyāhetukatve sati kasyacidabhāvāt| yasmā “dapekṣayā hi” tasyāpeṣaṇīyasya hetorbhāve bhavanto'bhāve ca na bhavantaḥ “kādācitkāḥ” kadācibhdavā yujyante, nānyatheti| tasmānna vilakṣaṇāt kāraṇāt avilakṣaṇasya kāryasyotpattirabhyupagantavyā, yathoktena nyāyenāhetukatvādiprasaṅgāt|

punarapi vilakṣaṇāyāḥ sāmagryāḥ avilakṣaṇasya kāryasyotpattau doṣāntaramāha- “vyavasthāvāṃśca” pratiniyataḥ “sādhyeṣu” ghaṭapaṭādiṣu “sādhanānāṃ” mṛttantvādīnāṃ loke yo “niyogo” ghaṭārthī mṛtpiṇḍameva tatra niyuṅkte na tantūn, paṭārthī ca tantūneva na mṛtpiṇḍam ityādikaḥ sa na syāt| kasmāt ? ityāha- “kāraṇānāṃ”-sāmagrīṇāṃ yāḥ “śaktayaḥ”- ātmātiśayalakṣaṇāstāsāṃ “pratīniyame” kācideva sāmagrī kvacideva kārye upayujyate nānyā'nyatretyevaṃrūpe “hi” yasmāt “kiñcideva” mṛdādikaṃ “kasyacideva” ghaṭādeḥ sādhanāyopādīyate “nāparaṃ” tadvilakṣaṇaṃ tantvādikam kasmādevam ? iti cet ? “tasyaiva” mṛdādeḥ “tatra” ghaṭādau “śakte” ryogyatvāt “anyasya” tantvādestatrāśakteḥ| kasmāttasyaiva tatra śaktirnnānyasya ityata āha “tayoḥ” mṛdādestantvādeśca “tajjanasvabhāvatvena” ghaṭādijananasvabhāvatvena “itarasvabhāvatvena ca” ghaṭādyajananasvabhāvena ca “bhedāt” anyatvabhāvāt| nahi mṛttantvādirūpatāto'nyadeva tajjananetarasvabhāvatvaṃ nāma| yadā tu sāmagrīṇāṃ parasparavilakṣaṇānāmapi śaktipratiniyamo neṣyate vilakṣaṇādapi avilakṣaṇakāryopagamāt tadā “ tajjananasvabhāvavilakṣaṇādapi” dhūmādijananasvabhāvaṃ yat kāraṇagnīndhanādisāmagrīlakṣaṇaṃ tadvilakṣaṇādapi śakramūrdvādeḥ kṣaṇāśrayeṇa vā dhūmādestasyāgnīndhanādisāmagrījanyasya dhūmasya tatkṣaṇasya cotpattāviṣyamāṇāyāṃ “na tajjananaśakteḥ pratiniyamo” vivakṣitadhūmādikāryajananaśaktipratiniyamaḥ| “iti”tasmād “yat kiñcit” kāryaṃ “yataḥ kutaścit” kāraṇāt “syāt” utpadyeta, na yathādṛṣṭameva yathādṛṣṭāt| sarvvaṃ sarvvato jāyeteti yāvat| tasmācchaktipratiniyamaḥ kāraṇānāmabhyupagantavyaḥ| tato vilakṣaṇasāmagrījanmanaḥ kāryasya kutaścit sāmyāt sarūpasyopalakṣaṇe'pyanyādṛśataiveti sarvvastādṛśastathāvidhajanmeti siddham|

syānmatam-vilakṣaṇāyā api sāmagryāstallakṣaṇakāryajananaśaktiḥ samāneti tallakṣaṇaṃ kāryaṃ bhaviṣyati kasyāścideva ca tathābhāvānna yathoditadoṣāvasara ityata āha “tajjananaśaktisāmye tu” ityādi| uktameva tāvad atra pūrvvapakṣe ‘na ca dhūmasya tadatajjanyasvabhāvaḥ’ ityādikaṃ dūṣaṇam| abhyupagamyāpīdamāha- “yādṛśī hyagnisahakāriṇaḥ” tadādhīyamānavikārasye “ndhanasya” svabhedena dhūmabhedahetoḥ “śaktiḥ” ātmātiśayastādṛśyeva śakramūrddhno dhūmasya vā yadi tatsāmagrījanyadhūmavilakṣaṇakāryajananaśaktirātmātiśayalakṣaṇā tadā tacchaktisāmye tadevāgnīndhanādikamevārthānnāmāntareṇoktaṃ syāt, tadvilakṣaṇasya tadavilakṣaṇātmātiśayāsambhavāt| sa eva hyagnirya indhanavikāramādadhāno dhūmaṃ janayati, taccendhanaṃ yadagninā''dhīyamānavikāraṃ dhūmaṃ svajātimanukārayati| yadi ca śakramūrdvāderapi evaṃ bhavatā'bhyupagamyate tadā kevalaṃ nāmni vivādaḥ syāt, arthābhedamabhyupagamya tathābhidhānāt| yata evam “iti” tasmāt “kāryaṃ” dhūmādikaṃ “dṛṣṭa”mekadā pratyakṣānupalambhābhyāṃ niścitamatadrūpavyavṛttenātmanā “kāraṇa”mindhanādikaṃ santānāpekṣayā kṣaṇāpekṣayā vā “ na vyabhicarati” tadvilakṣaṇādanyato na bhavatīti kāryahetāvanvayavyatirekaniścayaḥ sidhyatīti|
