nanu buddhāddharmo dharmataśca āryasaṃgha iti kramaḥ| tat kimiti buddhānantaramāryasaṃghaḥ, tadanu dharma iti vyatikramanirdeśaḥ ? satyam| iha ślokabandhānurodhād vyatikramanirdeśo veditavyaḥ| yojanāttu sugatān sadharmakāyān sasutān praṇipatya, iti anukrameṇaiva| na kaścidatra doṣaḥ| athavā| bodhisattvānāmapi adhigatadharmatvādānurūpyeṇa dharmakāyo vidyata eva| teṣāmapi saha dharmakāyena namaskaraṇaṃ pratipādanīyam| te'pi hi samadhigatadharmatayā sugatatvaniyatāḥ sugataprāyāḥ| iti dharmāt pūrvaṃ nirdeśaḥ| iti na kiṃcidayuktam| kimetāneva ? netyāha-akhilāṃśca bandyāniti| aparānapi samastān vandanīyān ācāryopādhyāyaprabhṛtīnapi| ādarataḥ praṇipatyeti| iti pūrvārdhena sugatādīnāṃ namaskṛtimabhidhāya aparārdhena abhidheyādīni pratipādayannāha-sugatātmajetyādi| ātmano jātāḥ ātmajāḥ| sugatānāmātmajāḥ jinaputrāḥ, bodhisattvā ityarthaḥ| teṣāṃ saṃvarāvatāram| saṃvaraṇaṃ saṃvriyate vā aneneti saṃvaraḥ, bodhicittagrahaṇapūrvakaṃ bodhisattvaśikṣāsamādānam| tacca yathāvasaraṃ vakṣyāmaḥ| tasya avataraṇam| avatīryate tasmin vā anenetyavatāro mārgaḥ, yena bodhisattvapadaprāptau sugatatvamavāpyate| taṃ kathayiṣyāmi pratipādayiṣyāmi| anena granthenetyarthaḥ| evamanena pratipādyamānatvāt saṃvarāvatāraḥ abhidheyamasya, ayamabhidhānaṃ saṃvarāvatārasya, iti abhidhānābhidheyalakṣaṇaḥ saṃbandho'pyarthāt kathitaḥ| tatkathanaṃ ca abhidhānaprayojanam| paramārthatastu abhidheyasvarūpavyutpattireva tatprayojanam| abhidheyasya punaḥ śrutamayyādiprajñotpādanakrameṇa sarvāvaraṇavigamād buddhatvameva prayojanamiti prayojananiṣṭhā| idaṃ ca sugatātmajasaṃvarāvatāraśabde eva antarbhāvitam| tadanantaramevokteḥ| yadanuśaṃsakathanena ca sūcayiṣyati|



aśucipratimāmimāṃ gṛhītvā jinaratnapratimāṃ karotyanardhām|



iti saṃbandhābhidheyaprayojanāni pravṛttyaṅgatayā pratipāditāni| anyathā anabhidheyādiśaṅkayā prekṣāvatāmatra pravṛttirna syāt| nanu tvayā svātantrayeṇa kathitaṃ kathanaṃ kathaṃ grahīṣyantītyāha-yathāgamamiti| āgamānatikrameṇa| yathaiva pravacane bhagavadbhiḥ pratipāditaḥ, tathā mayāpi tadarthānativṛttyā pratipādayitavyaḥ| anena āgamāt svātantryaṃ parihṛtaṃ bhavati| utsūtramidaṃ na bhavatītyarthaḥ| pravacanārthāvagāhanamapi ca avakratayā anena ātmano darśitam| idamapi pravṛttyaṅgameva| nanu yadi yathāgamaṃ kathayitavyaḥ, tarhi āgame eva tadabhilāṣiṇaḥ pravartiṣyante, tatkimanenetyāha-samāsāditi| saṃkṣepāt| yadi nāma āgame'pi kathitaḥ, tathāpi tatra ativistareṇa nānāsūtrānteṣu pratipādanāt| ahaṃ tu piṇḍīkṛtya saṃkṣepeṇa kathayiṣyāmīti viśeṣaḥ| anena punaruktamidaṃ bhavatīti parihṛtam| ayamapi ca apravṛttyaṅgatāparihāraḥ| tasmāt pravṛttyaṅgattvādabhidheyādikathanamasaṃgataṃ na bhavati-tarhi praṇāmakaraṇamapārthakam| tadapi śreyolābhādyarthamabhidhīyamānaṃ kathamapārthakam ? ayamasyābhiprāyaḥ-sugatādipraṇāmasamudbhūtapuṇyasaṃbhārasamākrāntacittasaṃtānasya pratanutarapurākṛtapāpavṛtterūpaśāntavighnasya ārabdhārthaparisamāptirupajāyate| samastasādhujanagatamārgānugamanamapi ca anena ātmanaḥ prakāśitaṃ bhavet| iṣṭadevatādinamaskṛtiśravaṇādāstikatvasaṃbhāvanayā śrotṛṇāmātmagranthe ca gauravamāpāditaṃ syāt| atra ca sugataśabdena udbhāvitabhagavanduṇamāhātmyaśravaṇāt tadabhilāṣiṇaḥ tadupārjanapravaṇamānasāḥ sugatātmajasaṃvarāvatāraparijñānāya yatnavantaḥ asmin pravartante| idamabhimatadevatādipraṇāmaphalam| etena idamapi-yena yadabhimatamabhipretaṃ kartum, sa tadeva karotu nānyat| anyakaraṇe aprastutābhidhānamatiprasaṅgaśca syāt| tadayamapi saṃvarāvatārakathane kṛtābhiprāyaḥ kimaprastutamiṣṭadevatādipraṇāmaṃ karoti ? prāguktadoṣadvayaprasaṅgāditi yaducyate, tadapi nirākṛtaṃ bhavati, tadupayogasya varṇitatvāt nāprastutābhidhānam| yat prakṛtopayogi tadvaktavyaṃ nānyat, ityatiprasaṅgo nāstīti sarvaṃ sustham||



nanu āgamānatiriktaṃ saṃkṣepeṇābhidhīyamānamapi kathamarthaviśeṣādyabhāvādviśeṣeṇa pravṛttyaṅgatayā kasyacidupādeyaṃ syāt ? tasmādāgamādadhikamapi kiṃcidatra vaktavyamityāśaṅkayāha-



na hi kiṃcidapūrvamatra vācyaṃ

na ca saṃgrathanakauśalaṃ mamāsti|

ata eva na me parārthacintā

svamano vāsayituṃ kṛtaṃ mayedam||2||



naiva kiṃcidapūrvamaparamāgamādatiriktamasmin vaktavyamasti mama| yasmādarthe vā hiśabdaḥ| tarhi tadadhikaprameyānabhidhāne'pi padārtharacanāviśeṣo bhaviṣyati| tasmādapi viśeṣeṇa pravṛttiḥ syāditi| atrāha-na ceti| nāpi saṃgrathanamarthapadavinyāsaviśeṣaḥ, tatra kauśalaṃ naipuṇyaṃ mamāsti| avadhāraṇe vā cakāraḥ| yadyevam, kathamasya parārthopayogitva miti| āha-ata eveti| paraprasañjitameva abhyupagacchati| yasmādapūrvaṃ vaktuṃ mama śaktirnāsti| nāpi saṃgrathanakauśalamasti| na ca parārthacintāpi| parārthopayuktamidaṃ bhavatīti vikalpo'pi me nāsti, tatra śktivaiguṇyāt| kimarthaṃ karaṇāya yatna iti cedāha-khamana iti| ātmacittaṃ sugatātmajasaṃvarāvatārābhyāsarasena adhikādhikaṃ vāsayituṃ kṛtaṃ praṇitaṃ mayā prakaraṇamidam| saṃvarāvatārakathanaṃ vā| atītakālanirdeśaḥ antastattvaniṣpannaṃ (?) manasi nidhāyeti||



nanu nātmārthaṃ granthapraṇayanaṃ dṛṣṭam, na ca svayaṃkṛtenaiva ātmani viśeṣādhānam, tāvataḥ saṃskāraviśeṣasya prāgevātmani vidyamānatvāditi| atrāha-



mama tāvadanena yāti vṛddhiṃ

kuśalaṃ bhāvayituṃ prasādavegaḥ|

atha matsamadhātureva paśye-

daparo'pyenamato'pi sārthako'yam||3||



anena granthena vā| kuśalaṃ śubhamanaskāraṃ bhāvayitumārādhayitum| vṛddhiṃ yāti prasādavegaḥ| uttarottaravardhamānasya prasannacittasaṃtānasya pravāhavāhitayā pravṛttiḥ| anena svārthakāritvamanubhavasiddhamasya nidarśayati| parārthakāritvamapi leśataḥ saṃbhavati iti darśayannāha-atha matsametyādi| atheti prakārāntaropanyāse| svārthakāritvamasya tāvadanubhavasiddham| yadi punarmama samānaprakṛtireva kaścidanyaḥ paśyedīkṣeta, enaṃ granthamarthaṃ vā, ato'pi parārthopayuktatvādapi sārthakaḥ saprayojano'yam| parārthopayogasyāpi kathaṃcit saṃbhavāt| anena ślokena nirabhimānatāmātmano darśayati||



idānīṃ saṃvarāvatārakathāṃ grāhayitumupoddhātaṃ racayannāha-



kṣaṇasaṃpadiyaṃ sudurlabhā

pratilabdhā puruṣārthasādhanī|

yadi nātra vicintyate hitaṃ

punarapyeṣa samāgamaḥ kutaḥ||4||



aṣṭākṣaṇavinirmuktasya kṣaṇasya saṃpattiḥ samagratā| iyaṃ sudurlabhā suṣṭhu duḥkhena labhyata iti kathaṃcitprāpyā|



mahārṇavayugacchidrakurmagrīvārpaṇopamā|



pratilabdhā prāptā, sā ca puruṣārthasādhanī| puruṣasya arthaḥ abhyudayaniḥśreyasalakṣaṇaḥ, tasya sādhanī niṣpādanī| tadaṅgatvāt tatra samartheti yāvat| yadi ca evaṃbhūtāyāmapi asyāṃ na hitaṃ vicintyate, svaparasukhahetuḥ svargāpavargasādhanaṃ nopādīyate, tadā punarapi bhūyo'pi eṣa tathāgatotpādaḥ śraddhākśaṇavimukto manuṣyabhāvaḥ ityayaṃ samāgamaḥ samāveśo milanamiti yāvat| kutaḥ katham ? na kathaṃcidbhaviṣyati sudurlabhatvāt| akṣaṇāvasthāyāṃ dharmapravicayasya kartumaśakyatvāt, ityabhiprāyaḥ| yathoktamāryagaṇḍavyūhasūtre āryajayoṣmāyatanavimokṣe-



durlabhā aṣṭākṣaṇavinivṛttiḥ| durlabho manuṣyabhāvapratilambhaḥ| durlabhā kṣaṇasaṃpadviśuddhiḥ| durlabho buddhotpādaḥ| durlabhā avikalendriyatā| durlabho buddhadharmaśravaṇaḥ| durlabhaṃ satpuruṣasamavadhānam| durlabhāni bhūtakalyāṇamitrāṇi| durlabho bhūtanayānuśāsanyupasaṃhāraḥ| durlabhaṃ samyagjīvitaṃ manuṣyaloke iti||



idamevābhisaṃdhāyoktam-

mānuṣyaṃ durlabhaṃ loke buddhotpādo'tidurlabhaḥ|

tato'pi śraddhāpravrajyāpratipattiḥ sudurlabhā||

bodhau cittaṃ dṛḍhaṃ sarvasattvānāmanukampayā|

sarvaduḥkhapraśāntyarthaṃ durlabhānāṃ paraṃparā||iti||



akṣaṇāḥ punarime-

narakapretatiryañco mlecchā dīrghāyuṣo'marāḥ|

mithyādṛgbuddhakāntārau mūkatāṣṭāvihākṣaṇāḥ||iti||



tasmādidānīmeva udyogaḥ kartavya iti||



sāṃprataṃ bodhicittagrahaṇāya tatrābhilāṣamutpādayitumanuśaṃsāmavatārayannāha-



rātrau yathā meghaghanāndhakāre

vidyut kṣaṇaṃ darśayati prakāśam|

buddhānubhāvena tathā kadāci-

llokasya puṇyeṣu matiḥ kṣaṇaṃ syāt||5||



niśāyāṃ yathā jaladāgamasamaye meghairbahule tamasi sati saudāmanī kṣaṇalavamātramālokayati kiṃcidvastujātaṃ prakāśayati| saivopamā atrāpi ityāha- buddhānubhāvenetyādi| buddhā eva hi bhagavanto hitasukhopasaṃhārāya sadā bhavyābhavyatayā sarvasattvasaṃtānamavalokayantastiṣṭhanti| yadā yatra yenopāyena yasmai yaṃ bhavyaṃ paśyanti tadā tatra tenopāyena tasmai tamadhitiṣṭhanti| abhavyāvasthāyāmupekṣya viharanti| iti tathāgatādhiṣṭhānena kathaṃciddurlabhotpattikatvāt| lokasya janasya puṇyeṣu hitasukhahetuṣu kuśaleṣu karmasu buddhirmuhūrtamekaṃ bhavet| tatra tasyā asthiratvāt| anādisaṃsāre lokena akuśalapakṣasyaiva abhyastatvāt||



yadi nāma evam, tataḥ kimityāha-



tasmācchubhaṃ durbalameva nityaṃ

balaṃ tu pāpasya mahatsughoram|

tajjīyate'nyena śubhena kena

saṃbodhicittaṃ yadi nāma na syāt||6||



yata evam, tasmācchubhaṃ puṇyaṃ durbalaṃ sāmarthyavikalameva, vidyudunmeṣaprāyatvāt ati kṛśam| nityaṃ sarvakālam| kasya tarhi atiśayavad balamastītyāha-balaṃ tviti| sāmarthyaṃ punaraśubhasya mahat, meghaghanāndhakārasadṛśattvāttasya| sughoramatibhayaṃkaraṃ narakādiduḥkhadāyakatvāt, sudurjayatvācca| bhavatu nāma mahat sāmarthyamasya, tathāpi tadapareṇa balavatā puṇyena jeṣyate, tathā ca na kācit kṣatiriti, āha-tadityādi| tat tādṛśaṃ mahāsāmarthyaṃ jīyate abhibhūyate| anyena itareṇa| kena ? na kenāpītyarthaḥ| kutaḥ punarevamucyate ? saṃbodhītyādi| samyaksaṃbodhau buddhatve yaccittaṃ sarvasattvasamuddharaṇābhiprāyeṇa tatprāptyarthamadhyāśayena manasikāraḥ| tadyadi nāma na bhavet, mahāsāmarthyaṃ hi tadapareṇa mahīyasā parājīyate sūryeṇeva niśāndhakāraḥ| na ca saṃbodhicittāt pratipakṣo mahīyānaparaḥ saṃbhavati| tasmāt tatpratighātāya saṃbodhicittameva upādeyaṃ nānyadityabhiprāyaḥ||



ito'pi saṃbodhicittamupādeyamityāha-



kalpānanalpān pravicintayadbhi-

rdṛṣṭaṃ munīndrairhitametadeva|

yataḥ sukhenaiva sukhaṃ pravṛddha-

mutplāvayatyapramitāñjanaughān||7||



eko'ntarakalpaḥ kalpaḥ| viṃśatirantarakalpāḥ kalpaḥ| aśītirantarakalpāḥ kalpaḥ| sa ca mahākalpa ityabhidhīyate| tadiha mahākalpasyaiva grahaṇam| analpān bahūn prathamāsaṃkhyeyāntargatān| pravicintayadbhiḥ tātparyeṇa paribhāvayadbhiḥ| dṛṣṭamadhigatam| munīndraiḥ buddhairbhagavadbhirbodhisattvāvasthāyām| hitaṃ sarvārthasādhanayogyam, tadbījabhūtatvāt| etadeva saṃbodhicittameva| kathaṃ punaridameva hitamityāha-yata ityādi| yasmāt sukhaṃ pravṛddhaṃ prakarṣagataṃ buddhatvalakṣaṇam| apramitān aprameyān| janaughān sattvasamūhān| utplāvayati uttārayati saṃsāraduḥkhamahārṇavāt| tasmādidameva hitam||



athavā| yasmāt sukhaṃ devamanuṣyasaṃpattilakṣaṇam| pravṛddhaṃ vṛddhiṃ gatam| arthāt saṃbodhicittādeva| utplāvayati atiśayena saṃtarpayati| saukaryādadhikataraṃ yadbhavati tadutplāvanamucyate| yathā dadhnā vayamutplāvitā iti saukaryādadhikataraṃ dadhi bhūtamityarthaḥ||



yadi vā| yataḥ saṃbodhicittāt sukhaṃ pravṛddhamiti yojanīyam||



kathaṃ pravṛddhamityāha-sukhenaiveti| na akṛcchreṇa| na śiroluñcanādinā mahatā kaṣṭena| tathā hi bodhicittasaṃvarādeva bodhisattvo'mitapuṇyajñānasaṃbhārāt pravardhamāno devamanuṣyasaṃpattīḥ sukhamadhigacchan sattvāneva adhikataraṃ tābhiḥ saṃtarpayatīti| yadvakṣyati-



evaṃ sukhātsukhaṃ gacchan ko viṣīdetsacetanaḥ|

bodhicittarathaṃ prāpya sarvakhedaśramāpaham||iti||



nanu bhagavatāmapi maitrībalādijātakeṣu [jātakamālā-8] mahadduṣkaraṃ śrūyate| tat kathaṃ sukhenaiva sukhaṃ pravṛddhamiti ? naiṣa doṣaḥ| yataḥ utpādyameva parahitasukhādhāyakaṃ duḥkhaṃ svaparayoḥ| kṛpātmabhiḥ| sukhameva tādṛśaṃ duḥkhaṃ paraduḥkhaduḥkhināṃ dhimatāmiti pratipādayiṣyate||



asmādapi svaparahitahetutvādbodhicittaṃ na parityājyameveti darśayannāha-



bhavaduḥkhaśatāni tartukāmai-

rapi sattvavyasanāni hartukāmaiḥ|

bahusaukhyaśatāni bhoktukāmai-

rna vimocyaṃ hi sadaiva bodhicittam||8||



saṃsāraduḥkhaśatāni narakādigatiduḥkhānāmasātaveditānāṃ śatāni aparyantasamūhāṃ startukāmaiḥ parityaktumicchadbhiḥ śrāvakapratyekabuddhagotraiḥ| na kevalamātmīyāni, lokānāṃ jātyādiduḥkhānyapi hartukāmairapanetukāmairbodhisattvagotraiḥ| na kevalaṃ svaparaduḥkhāni hartukāmaiḥ, api ca, bahūni sukhānyeva saukhyāni teṣāṃ śatāni devamanuṣyopapattilabhyāni anubhavitukāmaiḥ saṃsārasukhābhilāṣukairapi| sadaiva sarvakālaṃ na vimocyamaparityājyaṃ bodhicittam| svīkartavyamityarthaḥ| athavā saṃbodhikāṅkṣiṇāmeva viśeṣaṇāni||



asmādapi guṇaviśeṣādbodhicittaṃ grāhyamityāha-



bhavacārakabandhano varākaḥ

sugatānāṃ suta ucyate kṣaṇena|

sanarāmaralokavandanīyo

bhavati smodita eva bodhicitte||9||



saṃsāra eva bandhanāgāram, tatra bandhanaṃ bandho rāgādaya eva yasyeti vigrahaḥ| tādṛśo varākastapasvī san| udite eva bodhicitte prathamataraṃ bodhicittasaṃvaragrahaṇasamaye| sugatānāṃ suta ucyate, buddhaputra ityabhidhīyate| kṣaṇena tatkṣaṇameva| na kevalamevamityāhasanarāmaretyādi| saha narāmaraiḥ manuṣyadevairvartante ye asurādayo lokāḥ, tesāmapi vandanīyo namaskaraṇīyaḥ stavanīyaśca bhavati sma| smaśabdena atītakālābhidyotanādbodhicittodayasamaye eva bhūtaḥ||



asmādapi guṇānuśaṃsadarśanādbodhicittagrahaṇe yatnaḥ karaṇīya ityāha-



aśucipratimāmimāṃ gṛhītvā

jinaratnapratimāṃ karotyanarghām|

rasajātamatīva vedhanīyaṃ

sudṛḍhaṃ gṛhṇata bodhicittasaṃjñam||10||



amedhyapratimāmimāṃ manuṣyādikalevarasvabhāvāṃ taddhātukāṃ tatsvabhāvām| tena saṃvardhitāmityarthaḥ| tāṃ gṛhītvā ādāya| jina eva ratnam, durlabhapratilambhādiguṇayogāt| tasya pratimāṃ karoti niṣpādayati bodhicittam| tathāgatavigrahaṃ nirvartayatītyarthaḥ| kiṃ bhūtām ? anarghām| na vidyate argho mūlyaṃ yasyāḥ| sarvatraidhātukātiśāyiguṇatvād guṇaparyantāparijñānācca| tathoktāṃ tām| ata eva rasajātaṃ rasaprakāram| atyuccavedhakāritvādatīva vedhanīyam| kartari anīyaḥ karaṇe vā| tat tādṛśam| bodhicittaṃ saṃjñā asya rasajātasya| bodhicittāparavyapadeśam| sudṛḍhaṃ gṛhṇata yathā gṛhītaṃ punarna calati gṛhṇīteti prāpte gṛhṇateti yathāgamapāṭhāt| tasmājjinaratnamātmānaṃ kartukāmairbodhicittamahārasaḥ sudṛḍhaṃ grahītavyaḥ| uktaṃ ca āryamaitreyavimokṣe [gaṇḍavyūhasūtra502]



tadyathā kulaputra asti hāṭakaprabhāsaṃ nāma rasajātam| tasyaikaṃ palaṃ lohapalasahasraṃ suvarṇīkaroti| na ca tadrasapalaṃ śakyate tena lohapalasahasreṇa paryādātuṃ lohīkartuṃ vā| evameva ekaḥ sarvajñatācittotpādarasadhātuḥ kuśalamūlapariṇāmanājñānasaṃgṛhītaḥ sarvakarmakleśāvaraṇalohāni paryādāya sarvadharmān sarvajñatāsuvarṇān karoti| na ca sarvajñatācittotpādarasadhātuḥ śakyate sarvakarmakleśāvaraṇalohādibhiḥ paryādātuṃ tatkartuṃ veti||



bhavagatiṣu vibhūtikāmairapi nātra saṃśayo viparyāso vā kartavyaḥ ityupadarśayannāha-



suparīkṣitamaprameyadhībhi-

rbahumūlyaṃ jagadekasārthavāhaiḥ|

gatipattanavipravāsaśīlāḥ

sudṛḍhaṃ gṛhṇ ata bodhicittaratnam||11||



gataya eva pattanāni paṇyadravyakrayavikrayanagarāṇi iha pattanāni| tadvat śubhāśubhakarmapaṇyadravyakrayavikrayasthānāni gatipattanāni| teṣu vipravāso vipravasanameva śīlaṃ svabhāvo yeṣāṃ te tathoktāḥ| teṣāṃ saṃbodhanam| he gatipattanavipravāsaśīlāḥ, sudṛḍhaṃ gṛhṇata bodhicittaratnam| bodhicittameva ratnaṃ ratnamiva| yathā cintāmaṇimahāratnaṃ sarvadāridyadurgatipraśamanahetuḥ, tathā idamapi bodhicittaratnam| ayamabhiprāyaḥ-vaṇija eva sukhasaṃpattilābhārthino yūyam| ataḥ idameva mahāratnaṃ mahatādareṇa gṛhṇata| kutaḥ ? bahumūlyamiti hetupadametat| yasmādanarghamidaṃ sarvātiśāyi laukikalokottarasaṃpattinidānabhūtatvāt, tasmādidameva grāhyamityarthaḥ| kathamidaṃ jñāyata iti cedāha-suparīkṣitamiti| suṣṭhu nirūpitaṃ samyaṅ nirṇītamityarthaḥ| kairityāha-aprameyadhībhiḥ| aprameyā pramātumaśakyā dhīrbuddhiryeṣāṃ taiḥ mahāprājñaiḥ buddhabodhisattvaiḥ| etāvatā parīkṣāyāṃ skhalitamapi nāsti iti suparīkśitamucyate| punarapi kiṃbhūtaiḥ ? jagadekasārthavāhaiḥ| sārthaṃ vāhayantītyaṇ| jagatāmeka eva sārthavāhāḥ karuṇāvaśavartino buddhā bhagavanto bodhisattvāśca, taiḥ| yathā khalu vaṇijāṃ hitāhitaprāptiparihārayorhitaiṣiṇo jñānavantaśca sārthavāhā netāro bhavanti, iti na tatra visaṃvādasaṃbhāvanā, tathā atrāpītyabhiprāyaḥ| tasmādidameva bodhicittaratnamanarghaṃ sudṛḍhaṃ grāhyamiti| etacca tatraivoktam-



tadyathā kulaputra yāvaccandrasūryau manḍalaprabhayā avabhāsete| atrāntare ye keciddhana dhānyaratnajātarūparajatapuṣpadhūpagandhamālyavilepanaparibhogāḥ, te sarve vaśirājamahāmaṇiratnasya mūlyaṃ na kṣamante, evameva yāvat triṣvapi adhvasu sarvajñajñānaṃ dharmadhātuviṣayamavabhāsayati| atrāntare yāni kāni cit sarvadevamanuṣyasarvasattvasarvaśrāvakapratyekabuddhakuśalamūlāni sāsravānāsravāṇi sarvāṇi tāni bodhicittotpādavaśirājamahāmaṇiratnasya mūlyaṃ na kṣamante| [gaṇḍavyūhasūtra-500] iti||



idamaparamasādhāraṇamatiśayavat kalpataroriva māhātmyamasya upadarśayannāha-



kadalīva phalaṃ vihāya yāti

kṣayamanyat kuśalaṃ hi sarvameva|

satataṃ phalati kṣayaṃ na yāti

prasavatyeva tu bodhicittavṛkṣaḥ||12||



kadalī yathā palamekavāraṃ datvā na punaḥ phalati, tathā bodhicittādanyadapi kuśalaṃ sarvameva kiṃcideva vipāke paripakve na punaḥ phaladānasamarthaṃ bhavati| tāvataivāsya parikṣayāt, vipākasya ca avyākṛtatayā punaḥ phalānubandhābhāvāt| bodhicittasya punarayaṃ viśeṣaḥ ityāha-satatamityādi| sarvakālaṃ phalati devamanuṣyopapattiṣu sukhasaṃpattipradānāt kṣayaṃ na yāti tadanyakuśalavat, sthirasvabhāvatvāt| pratikṣaṇamanekaprakāraiḥ śubhameghapravāhairāpūryamāṇatvācca prasavatyeva tu bodhicittavṛkṣaḥ, avicchinnasukhasaṃpattiphalaprasavanāt, uttarottaramaparā paraguṇaviśeṣajananācca| bodhicittaṃ vṛkśa iva| upamitaṃ vyāghrādibhiḥ iti samāsaḥ| yasmādevam, tasmādanuparatamatiśayavatsarvasukhasaṃpadaḥ prāptukāmaiḥ prekṣāvadbhiridameva grāhyam| kathitaṃ caitadāryākṣayamatinirdeśe-



tadyathāpi nāma bhadanta śāradvatīputra mahāsamudrapatitasyodakabindornāstyantarā parikṣayaḥ paryādānaṃ yāvanna kalpaparyantaḥ iti, evameva bodhipariṇāmitasya kuśalamūlasya nāstyantarā parikṣayaḥ paryādānaṃ yāvanna bodhimaṇḍaniṣadanam||iti||



na kevalaṃ sarvaśubhasaṃcayakāraṇam, akuśalapakṣakṣayaheturapi bodhicittamiti sārdhaślokenāha-



kṛtvāpi pāpāni sudāruṇāni

yadāśrayāduttarati kṣaṇena|

śūrāśrayeṇeva mahābhayāni

nāśrīyate tatkathamajñasattvaiḥ||13||



bodhicittagrahaṇātpūrvaṃ kṛtvāpi pāpāni akuśalakarmāṇi narakādiṣu duḥsahaduḥkhadāyakatvāt sudāruṇāni atibhayaṃkarāṇi mahānti vā yasya bodhicittasyāśrayādāśrayaṇāt tadutpādanarakṣaṇavardhanasevanalakṣaṇāt uttarati nistarati| tatsāmarthyābhibhavena atikrāmatītyarthaḥ| kṣaṇena ekasminneva kṣaṇe mahataḥ puṇyarāśeḥ samupārjanāt| tadutpādanamātreṇa| kathamivottarati ? śūrāśrayeṇeva mahābhayāni balavatpuruṣāśrayeṇa yathā mahāparādhaṃ kṛtvāpi kaściduttarati tadaparādhaphalānnirbhayo bhavati, tathā prakṛte'pi| tadevaṃbhūtaṃ bodhicittaṃ kathaṃ kimiti nāśrīyate na sevyate? ajñasattvaiḥ prajñāvikalairmūḍhajanairityarthaḥ| āśrayaṇīyameva tadbhavediti bhāvaḥ| idamapi tatraivoktam-



tadyathā kulaputra śūrasaṃniśritaḥ puruṣaḥ sarvaśatrubhyo na bibheti, evameva bodhicittotpādaśūrasaṃniśrito bodhisattvaḥ sarvaduścaritaśatrubhyo na bibhetīti||

aparamapi bodhicittātpāpakṣayadṛṣṭāntamāha-



yugāntakālānalavanmahānti

pāpāni yannirdahati kṣaṇena|



yugāntakāle pralayasamaye analo bahniḥ saptasūryodayasamudbhūtaḥ yathā sarvaṃ kāmādhātuṃ saprathamadhyānaṃ nirdahati, niḥśeṣaṃ dahati yathā bhasmāpi nāvaśiṣyate, tadvat pāpāni| kiṃbhūtāni ? mahānti sumeruprakhyāni mahārauravādiduḥkhavipākāni yad bodhicittaṃ nirdahati tadvipākopaghātānnirmūlayati| kṣaṇena nacireṇa| nāśrīyate tatkathamajñasattvairiti saṃbandhaḥ kāryaḥ|| etadapi tatraivoktam-kalpoddāhāgnibhūtaṃ sarvaduṣkṛtanirdahanatayā| pātālabhūtaṃ sarvākuśaladharmaparyādānakaraṇatayā iti||



nanu kṛtakarmāvipraṇāśavādī bhagavān, tat kathamidamabhidhīyate ? satyamucyate| bodhicittaprasūte pratikṣaṇamākāśadhātuvyāpake mahati puṇyaughe'ntarbhūtatayā lavaṇapalopamanyāyena aprajñāyamānatvāt, balavatā pratipakṣeṇa abhībhūtatvācca, phaladānāsamarthaṃ dagdhameva tadityadoṣaḥ| yadi vā nirupāyābhisaṃdhinā taduktam-nābhuktaṃ kṣīyate karmeti| idaṃ tu sarvapāpanirmūlane mahānupāyaḥ| tathā hi -yadā bodhisattvaḥ sarvasattvānākāśadhātuvyāpinaḥ sarvaduḥkhāt samuddhṛtya sarvasukhasaṃpannān kariṣyāmītyadhyāśayena vicintayati| pūrvakṛtaṃ ca pāpaṃ vidūṣaṇāsamudācārādibhiḥ kṣapayati, tadā bodhicittabalādeva tatsaṃtāne pāpasya kaḥ sadbhāvaḥ, yena codyasyāvakāśaḥ syāditi sarvaṃ nirākulam| etāvatā yaduktam-tajjīyate'nyena śubhena kena iti, tadapi vispaṣṭīkṛtam| anye punaḥ-aniyatavipākāpekṣayā sarvametaducyate, niyatavipākasya tu karmaṇaḥ kenacitpratiṣeddhumaśakyatvādityāhuḥ||



itthamapi bodhicittamupādeyamityāha-

yasyānuśaṃsānamitānuvāca

maitreyanāthaḥ sudhanāya dhīmān||14||



yasya bodhicittasya anuśaṃsān svābhāvikān guṇān amitān apramāṇān maitreyanāthaḥ bhagavānajitaḥ| kiṃbhūtaḥ ? dhīmān bodhisattvaḥ| uvāca uktavān| sudhanāya sudhananāmne bodhisattvāya| tathā ca āryagaṇḍavyūhasūtre [varṇitam-



bodhicittaṃ hi kulaputra bījabhūtaṃ sarvabuddhadharmāṇām| kṣetrabhūtaṃ sarvajagacchukladharmavirohaṇatayā| dharaṇibhūtaṃ sarvalokapratiśaraṇatayā| yāvat pitṛbhūtaṃ sarvabodhisattvārakṣaṇatayā| pe.........| vaiśravaṇabhūtaṃ sarvadāridyasaṃchedanatayā| cintāmaṇirājabhūtaṃ sarvārthasaṃsādhanatayā| bhadraghaṭabhūtaṃ sarvābhiprāyaparipūraṇatayā| śaktibhūtaṃ kleśaśatruvijayāya|| ityādi vistaraḥ||



nāśrīyate tat kathamajñasattvaiḥ iti atrāpi yojanīyam||

idānīṃ bodhicittasya prabhedaṃ darśayannāha-



tadbodhicittaṃ dvividhaṃ vijñātavyaṃ samāsataḥ|

bodhipraṇidhicittaṃ ca bodhiprasthānameva ca||15||



tat samanantarapradarśitānuśaṃsaṃ bodhicittaṃ dvividhaṃ dviprakāraṃ vijñātavyaṃ veditavyam| gotrabhūmyādigatānekaprakārasaṃbhave'pi kathaṃ dvividhamityāha-samāsataḥ| aparaprakārasaṃbhave'pi saṃkṣepataḥ idaṃ dvividhamucyate| dvividhamapi katham ? bodhipraṇidhicittamityekam, bodhiprasthānamiti dvitīyam| bodhau praṇidhiḥ, tadeva cittaṃ tatra vā cittam| yaccittaṃ praṇidhānādutpannaṃ bhavati dānādipravṛttivikalaṃ ca, tat praṇidhicittam| tadyathā-sarvajagatparitrāṇāya buddho bhaveyamiti prathamataraṃ prārthanākārā cetanā| prasthāne cittaṃ prasthānameva vā cittam| cittasya tatsvabhāvatvāt| pūrvakamanaskārapuraḥsarameva yataḥ prabhṛti saṃvaragrahaṇapūrvakaṃ saṃbhāreṣu pravartate, tat prasthānacittam| iti uktakrameṇa dvaividhyam| iyāneva bhedaḥ iti evakāreṇa pratipādayati| cakāradvayaṃ parasparasamuccaye| dvayorapi bodhicittatvaṃ darśayati| tena pūrvakaṃ bodhicittaṃ na bhavatīti śaṅkāṃ nirasyati| śūraṃgamasūtre ādyotpāditasyāpi bodhicittasya buddhatvahetutvābhidhānāt| tathā āryagaṇḍavyūhe coktam-



durlabhāḥ kulaputra te sattvāḥ sattvaloke ye anuttarasyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau cittaṃ praṇidadhati| tato'pi durlabhatamāste sattvāḥ ye anuttarāṃ samyaksaṃbodhimanuprasthitāḥ||iti||



idānīmuktameva prabhedamudāharaṇena vyaktīkurvannāha-

gantukāmasya gantuśca yathā bhedaḥ pratīyate|

tathā bhedo'nayorjñeyo yāthāsaṃkhyena paṇḍitaiḥ||16||



yathā kaścit puruṣaḥ abhimatadeśaprāptaye gantukāmaḥ gamanābhiprāyaḥ, na tu punargacchatyeva, anyaḥ punastatprāptaye prasthito gacchatyeva| yadvadyathā| tayorbhedo viśeṣaḥ pratīyate avagamyate, tadvattathā bhedo nānātvamanayorbodhipraṇidhiprasthānacetasorjñeyaḥ avaboddhavyaḥ paṇḍitairvicakṣaṇaiḥ| katham ? yāthāsaṃkhyena| svārthe'pyaṇ| prāktanaṃ praṇidhicittasya nidarśanaṃ paścāttanaṃ prasthānacetasaḥ iti saṃkhyārthaḥ||



tadetat praṇidhicittaṃ pratipattivikalamapi saṃsāre mahāphalaṃ bhagavatā varṇitamityāha-

bodhipraṇidhicittasya saṃsāre'pi phalaṃ mahat|



yadi nāma tat pratipattivikalam, tathāpi tasya āstāṃ tāvad buddhatvam, saṃsāre'pi devamanuṣyopapattisvabhāvaṃ sukhasaṃpattilakṣaṇaṃ phalaṃ mahat, anyasmāt kuśalād bṛhat| satataṃ phalatītyādiviśeṣaṇaviśiṣṭatvāt| tathā coktamāryamaitreyavimokṣe [=gaṇḍavyūhasūtra-508]-



tadyathāpi nāma kulaputra bhinnamapi vajraratnaṃ sarvaprativiśiṣṭaṃ suvarṇālaṃkāramabhibhavati, vajraratnanāma ca na vijahāti, sarvadāridyaṃ ca vinivartayati, evameva kulaputra pratipattibhinnamapi sarvajñatācittotpādavajraratnaṃ sarvaśrāvakapratyekabuddhaguṇasuvarṇālaṃkāramabhibhavati, bodhicittanāma ca na vijahāti, saṃsāradāridyaṃ ca vinivartayatīti||



tasmād yo'pi pāramitāsu sarveṇa sarvaṃ sarvathā śikṣitumasamarthaḥ, tenāpi bodhicittamutpādanīyam| evamupāyaparigraheṇa mahāphalatvāt| yathoktamāryāpararājāvavādakasūtre-



yasmāt tvaṃ mahārāja bahukṛtyo bahukaraṇīyaḥ, asahaḥ sarveṇa sarvaṃ sarvathā sarvadā dānapāramitāyāṃ śikṣitum, yāvat prajñāpāramitāyāṃ śikṣitum| tasmāttarhi tvaṃ mahārāja evameva saṃbodhicchandaṃ śraddhāṃ prārthanāṃ praṇidhiṃ ca, gacchannapi tiṣṭhannapi niṣaṇṇo'pi śayāno'pi jāgradapi bhuñjāno'pi pibannapi, satatamamitamanusmara, manasi kuru, bhāvaya| sarvabuddhabodhisattvapratyekabuddhāryaśrāvakapṛthagjanānāmātmanaśca atītānāgatapratyutpannāni kuśalamūlānipiṇḍayitvā tulayitvā anumodayasva agrayā anumodanayā| anumodya ca sarvabuddhabodhisattvapratyekabuddhāryaśrāvakāṇāṃ pūjākarmāṇi niryātaya| niryātya ca sarvasattvasādhāraṇāni kuru| tataḥ sarvasattvānāṃ yāvat sarvajñatāpratilambhāya sarvabuddhadharmaparipūraṇāya dine dine traikālyamanuttarāyāṃ samyaksaṃbodhau pariṇāmaya| evaṃ khalu tvaṃ mahārāja pratipannaḥ san rājyaṃ ca kārayiṣyasi, rājyakṛtyāni ca na hāpayiṣyasi, bodhisaṃbhārāṃśca paripūrayiṣyasi||ityādikamuktvāha-sa khalu punastvaṃ mahārāja samyaksaṃbodhicittakuśalamūlavipākena anekakṛtvo deveṣu upapanno'bhūḥ| anekakṛtvo manuṣyeṣu upapanno'bhūḥ| sarvāsu ca devamanuṣyopapattiṣu ādhipatyaṃ kārayiṣyasi| iti vistaraḥ||



iti caryāvikale'pi bodhicitte nāvamanyanā kāryā| tasyāpi anantasaṃsāre sukhaprasavanāt| yat punaḥ pratipattisāraṃ bodhicittaṃ tadatitarāṃ vipulaphalameveti siddhamityāha-



na tvavicchinnapuṇyatvaṃ yathā prasthānacetasaḥ||17||



na tu na punaḥ| yathā prasthānacittasya avicchinnapuṇyatvaṃ nirantaraśubhapravāha vāhitvam, na tathā asyeti bhāvaḥ||



idameva avicchinnapuṇyatvaṃ vṛttadvayena prasādhayannāha-

yataḥ prabhṛtyaparyantasattvadhātupramokṣaṇe|

samādadāti taccittamanivartyena cetasā||18||



tataḥprabhṛti suptasya pramattasyāpyanekaśaḥ|

avicchinnāḥ puṇyadhārāḥ pravartante nabhaḥsamāḥ||19||



yataḥprabhṛtiḥ yasmādārabhya| na vidyate paryantaḥ iyattā asyeti aparyantasya ākāśadhātuvyāpinaḥ sattvadhātoḥ| pramokṣaṇe pramokṣe sarvaduḥkhopaśamanimitte| samādadāti taccittam, samyaksaṃbodhicittaṃ samādāya vartate| katham ? anivartyena cetasā apravṛttibhraṣṭena manasā| tataḥprabhṛti tadādiṃ kṛtvā| suptasya middhākrāntacittasya pramattasya vikṣiptacittasyāpi| ubhayatrāpi saṃbadhyate| upalakṣaṇaṃ caitat| gacchato'pi tiṣṭhato'pi niṣaṇṇasyāpi bhuñjānasyāpi mūrcchādyavasthāyāmapītyādi draṣṭavyam| anekaśa iti| pratikṣaṇamanekavāram| avicchinnāḥ puṇyadhārāḥ nirantarasaṃtatayaḥ śubhavegāḥ pravartante| nabhaḥsamāḥ pratikṣaṇamākāśadhātupramāṇāḥ| tasmāt pratipattisāreṇa bodhisattvena bhavitavyam| āryasamādhirāje coktam-



tasmāt pratipattisāro bhaviṣyāmi, ityevaṃ kumāra śikṣitavyam| tat kasya hetoḥ ? pratipattisārasya kumāra na durlabhā bhavati anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhiriti [samādhi-10]||



avicchinnapuṇyaṃtvamasya bhagavataivoktamityupadarśayannāha-



idaṃ subāhupṛcchāyāṃ sopapattikamuktavān|

hīnādhimuktisattvārthaṃ svayameva tathāgataḥ||20||



idameva aprameyapuṇyatvaṃ svayameva ātmanaiva tathāgato buddho bhagavānuktavān kathitavān| kva ? subāhupṛcchāyāṃ subāhupṛcchānāmni sūtre| katham ? sopapattikaṃ sayuktikam| kimartham ? hīnādhimuktisattvārtham| hīne śrāvakapratyekabuddhayāne adhimuktiḥ śraddhā chando vā yeṣāṃ te| te sattvāśca| tebhya idaṃ tadartham| tat prayojanamuddiśyetyarthaḥ| tathā hi-ye aniyatagotrāściratarakālena bahutarasaṃbhāropārjanabhītā mahāyānāccittaṃ vyāvartya laghutarakālena alpatarasaṃbhārasādhye śrāvakapratyekabuddhayāne cittamutpādayanti, tadvayāvartanārthaṃ bhagavānupapattimāha||



tāmevopapattiṃ vṛttadvayena kathayannāha-

śiraḥśūlāni sattvānāṃ nāśayāmīti cintayan|

aprameyeṇa puṇyena gṛhyate sma hitāśayaḥ||21||



kimutāpratimaṃ śūlamekaikasya jihīrṣataḥ|

aprameyaguṇaṃ sattvamekaikaṃ ca cikīrṣataḥ||22||



katipayajanānāṃ mastakapīḍāṃ nāśayāmi mantreṇa agadena vā, ityevaṃ manasi kurvan apramāṇena sukṛtena asau kalyāṇābhiprāyo gṛhīto draṣṭavyaḥ| kiṃ punarapramāṇaṃ saṃsāraduḥkhaṃ pratisattvamapramāṇasya jagato hartumicchataḥ| api ca tacchūlamapanīya sarvasattvān sarvaguṇasamaṅginaḥ kartumicchataḥ kimaprameyaṃ puṇyaṃ na bhavati ? iti vibhaktivipariṇāmena yojanīyam| avicchinnāḥ puṇyadhārāḥ kimuta tasya na pravartante nabhaḥsamā iti| tasmād yathā saṃbhārabāhulyasādhyaṃ buddhatvam, yathā saṃbhāravaipulye'pi pratikṣaṇamiti hetuviśeṣādatraiva mahāyāne mahānlābhaḥ| ato nāsmaccittamabhayasthāne kātaratayā vinivartanīyamityupadarśitaṃ bhavati| yadvakṣyati-



kṣapayan pūrvapāpāni pratīcchan puṇyasāgarān|

bodhicittabalādeva śrāvakebhyo'pi śīghragaḥ||

yaścaivaṃ sarvasattvānāṃ hitasukhārthamudyujyate, sa devādibhyo'pyasādhāraṇaguṇātvāt praśasya ityupadarśayannāha-



kasya mātuḥ piturvāpi hitāśaṃseyamīdṛśī|

devatānāmṛṣīṇāṃ vā brahmaṇāṃ vā bhaviṣyati||23||



kasya sattvasya| māturjananyāḥ| kasya piturvā janakasya| devatānāṃ somavaruṇādīnām| ṛṣīṇāṃ vā vasiṣṭhagotamādīnām| brahmaṇāṃ vā vedhasām| iyamīdṛśī hītāśaṃsā hitopasaṃhāramatiḥ yādṛśī samanantaraṃ pratipāditā bodhisattvasya bhaviṣyati iti| āstāṃ tāvat bhūtā bhavati vā, bhaviṣyatyapi naiva kasyacidbodhisattvamantareṇānyasya||



kutaḥ punaretadityāha-

teṣāmeva ca sattvānāṃ svārthe'pyeṣa manorathaḥ|

notpannapūrvaḥ svapne'pi parārthe saṃbhavaḥ kutaḥ||24||



teṣāṃ mātrādīnāṃ svārthe'pi ātmanaḥ kṛte'pi eṣa manorathaḥ sarvaduḥkhamapahartum, apramāṇaguṇānādhātuṃ notpannapūrvaḥ abhūtapūrvaḥ svapne'pi| āstāṃ tāvajjāgradavasthāyāṃ buddhipūrvakamutpannaḥ| parārthe kadācidutpadyeta ityāha-parārthe saṃbhavaḥ kutaḥ| ātmā hi vallabho lokasya parasmāt| tatraiva cennāsti, parārthe saṃbhāvanāpi kutaḥ ? athavā| svapne'pi parārthe saṃbhavaḥ kutaḥ iti yojyam||



tadevamasādhāraṇatvaṃ bodhisattvasya pratipādya upasaṃharannāha-

sattvaratnaviśeṣo'yamapūrvo jāyate katham|

yatparārthāśayo'nyeṣāṃ na svārthe'pyupajāyate||25||



evamatyadbhutakarmakāritayā durlabhotpādāt sattva eva ratnaviśeṣaḥ apūrvaḥ anupalabdhapūrvaḥ| ayamiti yādṛśaguṇo'tra kathitaḥ| jāyate katham| kathamityadbhute| kasmāt punarevamucyate ? āha-yatparārtheti| yasya mahātmanaḥ parārthāśayaḥ anyeṣāṃ sattvānāmuktakrameṇa na svārthe'pyupajāyate ityasmāt||



atra ca anye'pi bodhicittotpādakasya guṇā vaktavyāḥ| yathā āryagaṇḍavyūhe bhagavatā āryamaitreyeṇa sudhanamadhikṛtya udbhāvitāḥ| te ca ativistareṇa śāstrakṛtā śikṣāsamuccaye darśitāśca, tatraiva avadhārayitavyā||



punarapi bodhicittānuśaṃsādvāreṇa bodhisattvasyāprameyapuṇyatvamāha-

jagadānandabījasya jagadduḥkhauṣadhasya ca|

cittaratnasya yatpuṇyaṃ tatkathaṃ hi pramīyatām||26||



sarvasattvānāṃ sarvaprāmodyakāraṇasya devādisarvasaṃpattinidānabhūtatvāt| cittaratnasya bodhicittasya yat puṇyaṃ tat kathaṃ hi pramīyatām, kena prakāreṇa nāma saṃkhyeyatām| ativipulatayā pramātumaśakyatvāt| etaduktamāryavīradattaparipṛcchāyām-



bodhicittāddhi yatpuṇyaṃ tacca rūpi bhavedyadi|

ākāśadhātuṃ saṃpūrya bhūyaścottari tadbhavet||iti||



yadi nāma sāmānyena nirdeśaḥ, tathāpi prasthānacittasyeti draṣṭavyam, tasyaiva prakṛtatvāt| punarapi tasyaiva viśeṣaṇamāha-jagadduḥkhauṣadhasya ceti| sarvaprāṇabhṛtāṃ kāyikacaitasikasarvaduḥkhanivartanatayā sarvavyādhiharaṇamahāgadasvabhāvatvāt| tadanena abhyudayaniḥśreyasahetutvaṃ bodhicittasya pratipāditaṃ bhavati| ato yuktameva asya asaṃkhyeyapuṇyatvamityuktaṃ bhavati||



kathaṃ punaretadyuktamityāśaṅkaya pratipādayannāha-

hitāśaṃsanamātreṇa buddhapūjā viśiṣyate|

kiṃ punaḥ sarvasattvānāṃ sarvāsaukhyārthamudyamāt||27||



sarvajagatparitrāṇāya buddho bhaveyamityadhyāśayena āśaṃsanāt prārthanāt kevalāt pratipattivikalādbodhicittādityarthaḥ| yatpuṇyaṃ bhavati tadbuddhapūjāmatiśete ityāgamādbhavatyeva puṇyaskandhaprasavahetuḥ| iti prathamasya bodhicittasya māhātmyamuktam| etadapi tatraivoktam-



gaṅgāvālikasaṃkhyāni buddhakṣetrāṇi yo naraḥ|

dadyātsadratnapūrṇāni lokanāthebhya eva hi||



yaścaikaḥ prāñjalirbhūtvā cittaṃ bodhāya nāmayet|

iyaṃ viśiṣyate pūjā yasyānto'pi na vidyate||iti||



kiṃ punaḥ sarvaduḥkhitajanānāṃ sarvaduḥkhamapanīya sarvasukhasaṃpannān kariṣyāmītyudyogakaraṇādatiśayavat puṇyaṃ na bhavati||



nanu hitāhitaprāptiparihārayoḥ svayameva sattvā vicakṣaṇāḥ| tat kutrodyamasyopayoga iti vṛttatritayena pariharannāha-



duḥkhamevābhidhāvanti duḥkhaniḥsaraṇāśayā|

sukhecchayaiva saṃmohāt svasukhaṃ ghnanti śatruvat||28||



yasteṣāṃ sukharaṅkāṇāṃ pīḍitānāmanekaśaḥ|

tṛptiṃ sarvasukhaiḥ kuryātsarvāḥ pīḍāścchinatti ca||29||



nāśayatyapi saṃmohaṃ sādhustena samaḥ kutaḥ|

kuto vā tādṛśaṃ mitraṃ puṇyaṃ vā tādṛśaṃ kutaḥ||30||



duḥkhānniḥsaraṇābhiprāyāḥ prāṇātipātādibhirakuśalaiḥ karmabhiḥ kṣudhādiduḥkhapratīkāramicchantaḥ| duḥkhameva narakādiprapātavedanāsvabhāvam| abhidhāvanti tadabhimukhāḥ pravartante| duḥkhameva praviśantītyarthaḥ| śalabhā iva dīpaśikhāmiti| ata eva sukhecchayaiva sukhābhilāṣeṇaiva svasukhaṃ ghnanti śatruvat| ātmasukhaghātāya kathamātmanaiva śatravo bhavantīti cet, saṃmohād viparyāsavaśāt hitāhitaprāptiparihārayoḥ parijñānābhāvāt||



ato yaḥ puṇyātmā akāraṇavatsalaḥ teṣāṃ viparyastānāṃ sukharaṅkāṇāṃ sukhabhilāṣukāṇāṃ sarvaśo'labdhasukhānāṃ pīḍitānāṃ duḥkhitānām| anekaśa iti anekairduḥkhaśatairbahudhā bādhitānāṃ tṛptimāpyāyanaṃ sarvasukhaiḥ kuryāt kāyikacaitasikaiḥ| yadi vā| anekaśaḥ anekaprakāraṃ tṛptiṃ sarvasukhaiḥ kuryāt iti yojanīyam| na sukhatṛptimātraṃ janayati, kiṃ tarhi sarvāḥ pīḍāḥ samastā duḥkhā vedanāścchinatti ca śamayati ca||



na kevalaṃ duḥkhapraśāntiṃ sukhatṛptiṃ ca karoti, nāśayatyapi saṃmoham, aparijñānamapi nivartayati|



apathamidameṣa panthā bhayamata ita eta gāta mā''sādam|

iti heyopādeyamārgaprakāśanāt| yaścaivaṃ paravyasananivartanaparatanno hitasukhavidhānatatparaśca sarvabhūtānām| sādhustena samaḥ kutaḥ, tena mahātmanā tulyaḥ sādhuḥ kutaḥ ? naiva kutaścidvidyate akāraṇaparamavatsalasvabhāvatvāt| kuto vā tādṛśaṃ mitram, hitasukhopasaṃhārapravaṇamānasaṃ paramaviśvāsasthānaṃ tādṛśaṃ tatsamaṃ mitram, suhṛt kutaḥ ? naiva saṃbhavati| puṇyaṃ vā tādṛśaṃ kutaḥ ? evaṃ viharato bodhisattvasya yat puṇyamupajāyate, tadapi na kenacitpuṇyena samānam||



kṛte yaḥ pratikurvīta so'pi tāvatpraśasyate |

avyāpāritasādhustu bodhisattvaḥ kimucyatām ||31||





pūrvaṃ bhayasaṃkaṭavyasaneṣu upakṛtamanena ityupakṛte sati pratyupakāraṃ karoti yaḥ, so'pi tāvat praśasyate lokena stūyate sādhurayamiti| yaḥ punaravyāpāritasādhuḥ anabhyarthitakalyāṇopanetā bodhisattvaḥ, kimucyatāṃ kimaparamabhidhīyatām ? tasya praśaṃsā kartumaśakyetyarthaḥ||



dṛṣṭavyavahāramapekṣyāpi bodhisattvasya puṇyamāhātmyamudbhāvayannāha-



katipayajanasattradāyakaḥ

kuśalakṛdityabhipūjyate janaiḥ|

kṣaṇamaśanakamātradānataḥ

saparibhavaṃ divasārdhayāpanāt||32||



parimitasattvānāmāhārapānamātradānasamādānamādiśan puṇyakarmā ayamiti pūjyate satkriyate janaiḥ satkarmaratairlokaiḥ| tadapi dānaṃ kṣaṇam, na sakalamahaḥ, tadardhaṃ vā, api tu muhūrtamekam| aśanakamātradānata iti| kutsitamaśanamaśanakam, apraṇītaṃ bhojanam, tadeva kevalaṃ tanmātram, tathāvidhavyañjanarahitam| tasya dānataḥ parityāgataḥ| katham ? saparibhavam| kriyāviśeṣaṇametat| satiraskāraṃ namaskārāpuraḥsaram| haṭhātsatrāgāraṃ praviśataḥ khaṭacapeṭādinā prahṛtyeti yāvat| punaḥ kiṃbhūtāt ? divasārdhayāpanāt praharadvayopastambhanāt| madhyānhe bhuktvā sāyaṃ punarāhārānveṣaṇāt||



bodhisattvasya punaretadviparītaṃ dānamiti pratipādayannāha-

kimu niravadhisattvasaṃkhyayā

niravadhikālamanuprayacchataḥ|

gaganajanaparikṣayākṣayaṃ

sakalamanorathasaṃprapūraṇam||33||



na vidyate avadhiriyattā| iyadbhayaḥ śatasahasralakṣakoṭisaṃkhyebhyo dāsyāmi, tataḥ paraṃ neti na sattvānāṃ gaṇanayā dadāti, kiṃ tu niravadhisattvasaṃkhyayā| nāpi niyatakālam, api tu niravadhikālam| kalpaśatasahasralakṣakoṭiśataṃ yāvaddāsyāmi, tataḥ paraṃ neti sāvadhikaṃ na dadāti| gaganeti| gaganamiva janāḥ gaganajanāḥ| yathā ākāśamaparyantaṃ tathā jano'pītyarthaḥ| yadi vā| gaganaṃ ca janāśca te gaganajanāḥ| teṣāṃ parikṣayaḥ paryavadānam| yāvadākāśadhāturyāvacca sattvā na parinirvṛtāḥ tāvadavadhikam| yadvakṣyati-



ākāśasya sthitiryāvadyāvacca jagataḥ sthitiḥ|

tāvanmama sthitirbhūyāt iti|



tasmādakṣayam, na vidyate kṣayaḥ paryanto'syeti kṛtvā| ayamabhiprāyaḥ-gaganajanaparikṣayāvadhi yaddānaṃ tadvastuto'kṣayameva, teṣāṃ parikṣayābhāvāt| nāpi pratiniyataṃ vastu, api tu sakalamanorathasaṃprapūraṇam| yadyasyābhimataṃ tat sarvamanavadyamabhiprāyālhādanakaraṃ paramapremagauravasatkārapriyavacanapuraḥsaraṃ pramuditamanasā anuprayacchato bodhisattvasya kiṃ punaḥ pūjā na yujyate ? tasya sutarāṃ yujyate iti yojyam| yaduktaṃ nārāyaṇaparipṛcchāyām-



na tadvastu upādātavyaṃ yasmin vastuni nāsya tyāgacittamutpadyate| na tyāgabuddhiḥ krameta| yāvat ayaṃ mamātmabhāvaḥ sarvasattvebhya utsṛṣṭaḥ parityaktaḥ, prāgeva bāhyāni vastūni| yasya yasya sattvasya yena yena yadyat kāryaṃ bhaviṣyati, tasmai tasmai tattaddāsyāmi| tatsaṃvidyamānaṃ hastaṃ hastārthikebhyo dāsyāmi, yāvat śiraḥ śirorthikebhyaḥ parityakṣyāmi, kaḥ punarvādo bāhyeṣu vastuṣu| yaduta dhanadhānyajātaruparajataratnābharaṇahayarathagajavāhanagrāmanagaranigamajanapadarājyarāṣṭrarāja-dhānīpattanadāsīdāsakarmakarapauruṣeyaputraduhitṛparivāreṣu| iti vistaraḥ||



evaṃ ca guṇaratnasamuccayasthāne parahitasukhavidhānaikaparamamahāvrate bodhisattve svātmahitakāmaiḥ svacittaṃ rakṣitavyaṃ prayatnataḥ ityupadarśayannāha-



iti sattrapatau jinasya putre

kaluṣaṃ sve hṛdaye karoti yaśca|

kaluṣodayasaṃkhyayā sa kalpān

narakeṣvāvasatīti nātha āha||34||



ityevamuktakrameṇa sattrapattau sarvadā sukhadānapatau jinasya putre sugatasya sute| bodhisattve ityarthaḥ| kaluṣaṃ pāpacittaṃ sve hṛdaye ātmacittasaṃtāne karoti utpādayati durātmā yaḥ, sa narakeṣvāvasati iti nātho buddho bhagavānāha brūte| upānvadhyāḍvasaḥ iti karmatve prāpte adhikaraṇavivakṣā| kiyad yāvat kaluṣodayasaṃkhyayā kalpān| yāvataḥ kṣaṇāṃstatsaṃtāne kaluṣacittamutpadyate, tāvataḥ kalpān kaluṣacittakṣaṇasaṃkhyān narakeṣu tiṣṭhatīti bhāvaḥ| yaduktaṃ praśāntaviniścayaprātihāryasūtre-



yāvanti mañjuśrīrbodhisattvo bodhisattvasyāntike pratighacittānyutpādayati avamanyanācittāni vā, tāvataḥ kalpāṃstena saṃnāhaḥ saṃnaddhavyaḥ-vastavyaṃ mayā mahānarakeṣu iti||



nanu tathāgatasya duṣṭacittena rudhiramutpādayato nāvīcau cittotpādanakṣaṇasaṃkhyayā kalpān avasthitiruktā| na tathāgatāt kaścidadhikataraḥ saṃbhavati trailokye| tat kathamidamatidurghaṭaṃ nīyate? satyam| na khalu yathābhūtamasmin naye vastutattvavyavasthā| sarvasya pravacanasya neyanītārthatayā vyavasthāpanāt| na hi kaścit tathāgate sadevako'pi loko duṣṭacittamutpādayituṃ kṣamate| analpakalpasaṃkhyayā abhyāsena sarvasattveṣu maitracittasya sātmībhāvāt, nāsya kāye śastraṃ kramatīti maitracittasyānuśaṃsakathanāt| na ca karmaplutiriha vastuto darśitā| karmāvaraṇasya buddhānāṃ prahīṇatvāt| tasmādvaineyajanābhisaṃdhinā tadupadarśitaṃ na paramārthataḥ| bodhisattvāpakāre tu buddhatvameva samūlopaghātamupahataṃ bhavet| tathā ca sadevakasya lokasya arthaḥ upahato bhavet| yathāgamamidamuktam| paramārthamiha bhagavāneva jānāti| idamuktaṃ ca śraddhābalādhānāvatāramudrāsūtre-



yaḥ kaścinmañjuśrīḥ kulaputro vā kuladuhitā vā gaṅgānadīvālukāsamān stūpān vinipātayeddahedvā, yaścānyaḥ kulaputro vā kuladuhitā vā mahāyānādhimuktasya bodhisattvasya mahāsattvasya vyāpādakhilakrodhacittamutpādya ākrośayet paribhāṣayet, ayaṃ tato'saṃkhyeyataraṃ pāpaṃ praviśati| tat kasmāddhetoḥ ? bodhisattvanirjātā hi buddhā bhagavantaḥ, buddhanirjātāśca stūpāḥ sarvasukhopadhānāni ca sarvadevanikāyāśca| bodhisattvamasatkṛtya sarvabuddhā asatkṛtā bhavanti| bodhisattvaṃ satkṛtya sarvabuddhāḥ satkṛtā bhavanti| ityādi||



yasya punastatra prasannaṃ cittamutpadyate, tasya kiyat puṇyaphalamupajāyate, ityāha-



atha yasya manaḥ prasādameti

prasavettasya tato'dhikaṃ phalam|

mahatā hi balena pāpakaṃ

jinaputreṣu śubhaṃ tvayatnataḥ||35||



yasya punaḥ puṇyātmano manaḥ prasādamupayāti bodhisattve, prasavettasya tato'dhikaṃ phalam, tasya prasannacittasya prasavedupajāyeta tato'dhikaṃ phalaṃ tasmātpūrvakapāpaphalād bahutaraṃ puṇyakarmaphalaṃ vipākaviśeṣāt prasavedutpadyeta| yadi vā| tatsamadhikavipākaphalādhāyakaṃ karmaiva phalamucyate| adhikataraphalajanakaṃ karma upajāyate iti yāvat| uktaṃ ca niyatāniyatāvatāramudrāsūtre-



sacenmañjuśrīḥ daśasu dikṣu sarvalokadhātuṣu sarvasattvā utpāṭitākṣā bhaveyuḥ parikalpamupādāya| atha kaścideva kulaputro vā kuladuhitā vā teṣāṃ sarvasattvānāṃ maitracittastānyakṣīṇi janayet parikalpamupādāya| yo'nyo vā mañjuśrīḥ kulaputro vā kuladuhitā vā mahāyānādhimuktaṃ bodhisattvaṃ prasannacittaḥ paśyet, ayaṃ tato'saṃkhyeyataraṃ puṇyaṃ prasavati| iti||



tasmādasmin mahati puṇyakṣetre śubhacittameva karaṇīyamātmajñaiḥ||



api ca| ito'pi śubhacittameva kartumucitam| yasmānmahatā balena paramakṛcchreṇa pāpakaṃ pāpameva pāpakaṃ kutsitatvādvā duṣkṛtaṃ karma bodhisattveṣu kriyate, teṣāṃ sakalakāyavāṅyanaḥpracārasya prasādajanakatvāt| bodhicittaprabhāvācca na bodhisattveṣu kasyacidapakāracittamutpadyate| etaduktamāryamañjuśrīvimokṣe-



tadyathā kulaputra cintāmaṇiratnarājamukuṭāvabaddhānāṃ mahānāgarājñāṃ nāsti paropakramabhayam, evameva bodhicittamahākaruṇācintāmaṇiratnarājamukuṭāvabaddhānāṃ bodhisattvānāṃ nāsti durgatyapāyaparopakramabhayam| iti||



ataḥ kimarthamanarthopārjanaṃ kaṭukaphalaṃ teṣu prayatnataḥ prārabhyate ? ata eva śubhaṃ tvayatnataḥ, saṃgrahavastvādibhiḥ sarvasattvahitasukhakarmakāritvāt pariśuddhakarmakāritayā, kvacidapi skhalitābhāvācca| aprayatnata eva prītiprasādaprāmodyamupajāyate teṣu| ataḥ kuśalaṃ punarayatnata eva prasūyate||



sāṃpratamutpāditabodhicitteṣu atiśayavatā ātmanā manaḥprasādamāviṣkurvan śāstrakārastān namasyannāha-



teṣāṃ śarīrāṇi namaskaromi

yatroditaṃ tadvaracittaratnam|

yatrāpakāro'pi sukhānubandhī

sukhākarāṃstān śaraṇaṃ prayāmi||36||



teṣāṃ puruṣakuñjarāṇāṃ śarīrāṇi ātmabhāvān namaskaromi praṇipatya vande| yatra yeṣu (yeṣāṃ ?) saṃtāneṣu uditamutpannaṃ taduktānuśaṃsaṃ varacittaratnam| cittameva ratnaṃ cintāmaṇisadṛśam| varaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ sarvadāridyaduḥkhāpahāritvāt| tacca tadvaracittaratnaṃ ceti vigrahaḥ| taditi bhinnaṃ vā| iyaṃ ca adhikaguṇādhārasya satkṛtiḥ| aparamapi tadviśeṣaṇamāha-yatrāpakāro'pīti| yeṣu paramakalyāṇahṛdayeṣu bodhisattveṣu apakāro'pi parābhavo'pi kṛtaḥ tatkartuḥ sukhānubandhī paraṃparayā sukhamāvahatīti| ayamabhiprāyaḥ-tatrāpakāraḥ kartumaśakyaḥ| saṃbhave vā kathaṃcit tadapakārameva nimittaṃ kṛtvā pravṛttānāṃ duṣṭābhiprāyāṇāṃ punaḥ kenacinnimittena tatprasādasamutpādanāt| tatra apakāro nirvāṇe sukhamanubandhāti| tadyathā maitrībalajātake [jātakamālā-8] pañcakānadhikṛtyoktam| bodhisattvapraṇidhānādvā apakāro'pi sukhānubandhītyucyate| yadvakṣyati-



abhyākhyāsyanti māṃ ye ca ye cānye'pyapakāriṇaḥ|

utprāsakāstathānye'pi sarve syurbodhibhāginaḥ||iti||



athavā| yatrāpakāro'pi yeṣāmapakāro'pi mahākaruṇādhyāśayāt priyaputreṇa kṛta iva duḥkhaheturapi sukhameva janayati, yathā kṣāntiparicchede kathayiṣyāmaḥ| evaṃ sarvathā sukhahetutvāt sukhārthināṃ ratnākara iva ratnārthināmāśryaṇīyā bodhisattvā ityupadarśayati| sukhākarāṃstān śaraṇaṃ prayāmi| sukhasya ākarāḥ sarvasukhaikaprabhavatvāt| tān uktakrameṇa apakāre'pi sukhahetūn| śaraṇaṃ prayāmi| te mama trāṇaṃ bhavantu iti bhāvaḥ||
